2023 OSCAR Best Picture Nominee Experiment | Final Predictions!!!
Ойын-сауық
Which films will be nominated for Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars? With so many good films and so little rooms, I turn once again to the stats. Here I created a mathematical formula to predict ALL the Best Picture nominees. The bigger question is, who do you think will be nominated for Best Picture?

The fact that you made those magnets just for this one prediction video is amazing dedication. Its like you actually are interested and are not just making it for click bait. Also, I have a feeling that All Quiet will get in.
This ended up being the same as my Gold Derby predictions. Good stuff.
this is so mind blowing and amazing! you did such a great job on this, as always! all of these data is sooo entertaining to watch. huft... i just wish "Aftersun" get more recognition.

Thank you so much!!!. I was hoping Aftersun would be nominated Best Film at BAFTA. I should have mentioned that films like Aftersun and RRR can always surprise. Especially if Paul Mescal gets a nod for Best Actor and we see it pop up in Screenplay too, I could see a pathway for it. Thanks again!

It did get a Best British Film nod. Maybe you should look at that stat.
1. EEAAO 2. Banshees 3. Fabelmans 4. TAR 5. Elvis 6. Top Gun 2 7. All Quiet 8. The Whale 9. Avatar 2 10. Babylon Alts: Women Talking, Triangle of Sadness and RRR
One note to add which may or may not make a difference -- Critics Choice changed their date to be much earlier a few years ago. That meant they went from being predictors to being influencers.

The moment they said Jesse Buckley and Claire Foy were going to both get in for Best Supporting Actress with Buckley winning I knew something was off. Then as soon as Foy and Buckley kept missing they jumped ship and were like Kerry Condon is the Oscar frontrunner despite Bassett winning Globe and still won't put Bassett at #1 over Condon saying. Condon is a shoe in for BAFTA ignoring that JLC is also there. Plus the critics were tearing down Bassett as having no chance but then voted for her? The Critics Choice has no influence. Now instead of trying to focus on what the critics think they're more focused on being the most accurate predictions for the Oscars. Like how do people say the Globes Don't matter but that Critocs choice do? Makes no sense
@RyanCasselman

Interesting. I just quickly checked to ensure the Critics Choice noms date came before Oscar date, but didn't notice how much earlier it's shifted. From a glance, it looks just as reliable (if not more so now) when matching up with BP lineup. Last year (with the lineup of 10) they missed only one film, in 2020 they missed two, and 2019 they got all of them. With my current predictions, they would be missing two films. I'll cross reference and compare the years before the date shift and the years after. And make adjustments that will hopefully make it more accurate. Thanks for the note Sasha!
this video is so elaborate and wonderful
Nice another awesome take, I love your videos keep it man.
Brilliant systematic approach!! What has already happened, definitely gives us some meaningful indicators as to what will happen. Thank you!!
EEAAO, Banshees, Fabelmans, Tár, Elvis, Top Gun Maverick, Avatar Way of Water, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Whale, and Babylon. I really hope Women Talking gets in there, but it received 0 noms at the BAFTA awards, so I don't know if it can recover from that.
this is so cute! I love how much work you put into this presentation, creating a different look compare to the other award pundits out there. subbed!
I love your calculations. can't wait to see the stacking counting for best picture winner after the nominees announcement
Nice! I always enjoy your videos. I hope you get more subscribers!
This is really really interesting!!!
If Triangle of Sadness cracks the Best Picture Top 10, another place you may want to start factoring in to your calculation are the European Film Awards which has a pretty stellar recent track record of having any films that land its top prize or ANY acting win for that matter in either Best Picture, Best International Feature (or both)... provided that they also crack the Oscar shortlist for that category (if they're non-English; clearly in Triangle's case that's not applicable). In addition to its Palme d'Or prize, Triangle almost ran the table at the Euro Film Awards taking home top honours for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Actor. I'm also keeping my eyes peeled to see if Corsage pops for International Feature this year due to the actress win for Vicky Krieps (it did surprise with a nom at BAFTA).
9/10 is excellent! Nice work, thanks for the research and fun video
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once 2. The Banshees of Inisherin 3. TAR 4. The Fabelmans 5. Top Gun: Maverick 6. Elvis 7. All Quiet on the Western Front 8. The Whale 9. Avatar: The Way of Water 10. Babylon --- 11. Women Talking

I think you’re one of the best Oscar prognosticators on KZread! This was so entertaining and your personality is great. I agree with you about The Whale over Babylon. Yes, both got mixed to negative reviews from critics but the audience score for The Whale is extremely high! Babylon has an audience score similar to the critics.

Very great insightful deep dive … I currently agree with the formulas top 7… then I have AQ, Whale, & Babylon rounding out my 10 but Women Talking easily can knockout Babylon for that 10th slot

Well...I could easily see that as well! I went to an industry screening and the room felt split. But for those who liked it, they LOVED it. There's definitely some passion with Babylon. I think your interpretation with Babylon, Women Talking, and The Whale fighting for the 10th slot is right on.
I think you should award a movie that has more than one SAG nod, if it misses the ensemble. Not every movie is an ensemble like movie, but if it gets multiple nominations in individuals, then it's clearly supported by the actors. If so, the Whale would have edged Babylon in points total. I concur with the All Quiet inclusion.
@RyanCasselman
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree. When I included films that received at least two SAG nominations, it added a point to films like Carol, Foxcathcer, J Edgar, and I Tanya and made them land in the nomination zone (which they missed). But I agree that logically it would make sense. I'll keep tweaking the formula and see if I can come to some fair and accurate middle ground.
the "international" contribution this year is so baffling, you can't really pinpoint which one (or if any) will make it to top 10. not that they're not deserving (they extremely are), but the "lower rung" candidates have strong pros & cons that can make you think more... that being said, my 10 picks: *potential winner 1. Everything Everywhere All At Once 2. The Banshees of Inisherin *sure nominees 3. The Fabelmans 4. Tar 5. Top Gun: Maverick 6. Elvis *strong connection 7. Avatar: The Way of Water 8. Babylon *just enough momentum 9. The Whale 10. All Quiet on the Western Front breaks my heart to have these on the cusp: Triangle of Sadness Women Talking Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery sad to say, these have fallen back so hard: She Said The Woman King RRR never imagined these to have a chance: Living Aftersun Empire of Light Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Terrified. I'm terrified for Tuesday
The magnets are so delicate, and your presentation is a fresh take! 👏 My only concern is that since Avatar the way of water missed DGA and BAFTA nominations, its chances of getting in seems somehow decreasing. But I hope for the best!
Great video and really admire the effort in putting all of this data together. My Best Picture predictions would have to be: 1. The Fabelmans 2. Everything Everywhere All at Once 3. The Banshees of Inisherin 4. TÁR 5. Top Gun Maverick 6. Elvis 7. Avatar: The Way of Water 8. The Whale 9. All Quiet on the Western Front 10. Babylon

So are mine.
My 10 are the same as yours, but in a different order. It's interesting to know that the formula lines up with our choices. I also struggled with The Whale and Babylon and went with The Whale. We'll know soon. I'd love to hear about your tiebreaker system. Great video!
@RyanCasselman

Thanks so much! I may revisit this in the off season. See how it lined up, make some additional tweaks, and explain the tie-breaker round in detail. And then I can actually even go through and talk about how it played out in other years.
Have you changed your Oscar winner picks methodology with the Coda win last year or are you just considering it an anomaly? I think Western Front will sneak in.
@RyanCasselman
Жыл бұрын
Good question David! I'm planning to rework the Stat Stack formula is some way, but pretty sure it will never be able to explain for "the stat breaker" Coda's win. But hopefully it'll get us closer. Thanks David!
I like how you justified the points you gave to each film. That split International Film spot is really mucking things up for my predictions too. Then the hate-it-or-love-it films The Whale and Babylon. Black Panther to me isn't Best Picture material. If She Said had better editing it could've done much better because the Academy loves a good enthralling journalist film... so I think it gets in for Adapted Screenplay. A lot of people are predicting Edward Berger in Best Director which would come at the expense of Kosinski. So I'm not sure about that to be honest. Therefore I think it will get a Best Picture nom and strong contender for Adapted Screenplay. RRR will secure Best Original Song, Black Panther gets a lot of technical noms ... Glass Onion sadly will just scrape by with Adapted Screenplay although I would love to see Janelle Monaé in supporting actress... which is a stacked category. I think Netflix is pushing All Quiet at this point instead of Glass Onion and Pinocchio. Therefore my final predictions are: (1) Everything Everywhere All at Once, (2) The Fabelmans, (3) Top Gun: Maverick, (4) The Banshees of Inisherin, (5) TÁR, (6) Elvis, (7) Avatar: The Way of Water, (8) The Whale, (9) All Quiet on the Western Front, (10) Women Talking or Babylon, but probably the former
Hi Ryan, I have the same list as yours except for Babylon instead of Whale. And I really hope that the academy will nominate Olivia Colman. Ciao
Any reason you skipped 2016&2017 in your montage?

Oh my god. Nope! Just 3am editing oversight. Here are those two missing years... I wish I could post the screenshot, but here was the count. Thanks for pointing that out! 2016: La La Land - 11 Moonlight - 10 Manchester By the Sea - 10 Arrival - 8 Lion - 6 Hacksaw Ridge - 5 Hell or Highwater - 5 Fences - 4 Hidden Figures - 3 --------- Sully - 2 2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri - 12 Shape of Water - 10 Lady Bird - 8 Dunkirk - 8 Get Out - 7 Call Me Ny Your Name - 6 The Post - 4 Darkest Hour - 3 The Big Sick - 3 ------------- I Tanya - 2 Wonder Woman - 2 Baby Driver - 2 Phantom Thread - 1
Great approach! Loved this video. My lineup is as follows: 1. EEAAO 2. Banshees of Inisherin 3. Fabelmans 4. Tár 5. Top Gun Maverick 6. Avatar: The Way of Water 7. All Quiet on the Western Front (yes, I bumped it to 7 due to BAFTA surge) 8. Elvis 9. The Whale 10. Triangle of Sadness I agree with you that having both The Whale and Babylon felt wrong. Triangle of Sadness has a bit of a surge, seeing as Dolly De Leon popping up a few places now, and I think that it can barely sneak into 10th place. I think the race is over for Women Talking and it's gonna snag only two nominations.

I have the same 10! Slightly different order, but great list!!!
They tend to always do at least something surprising every year, so if All Quiet gets in I will not be too shocked despite knowing that some will be. I also feel like Triangle of Sadness has a slight possibility based on some discussion I've seen.
@RyanCasselman

You called Triangle of Sadness. 👍🏻👌🏻
Hey Ryan, I applaud you for all that work. You did a great job. Here's my thinking: 1. The Fabelmans 2. The Banshees of Inisherin 3. Everything Everywhere All At Once 4. TAR 5. Top Gun: Maverick 6. Elvis 7. Avatar: The Way of Water These are your safest of the bets. 1-3 got PGA + DGA + SAGE nominations -- the Guild triple crown. 4-5 got PGA and DGA + at least one major critics circle prize. 6-7 were nominated for the PGA and Globe Drama. For the last three, they are total wildcards. I'll with these: All Quiet on the Western Front - 14 BAFTA nominations, Netflix production, Anti-War film based on a popular novel. Women Talking - I liked it simply because it is the Adapted Screenplay champion. The Whale - PGA nominee + getting major buzz for Actor, Supporting Actress, and the play adaptation Babylon, Glass Onion (my favorite of the bunch), RRR and She Said could potentially get in.

If I'm in the same ballpark as Greg Feasel, then I know I'm around the right place. Thanks! :)
Hi man I am doing this at the moment for this year’s nominations and I was wondering if you could explain the tie breaker round for me as I have the colour purple and the zone of interest on the same number of points but just wanted to know how to put them head to head.
6 movies are undeniable at this point: 1) Everything Everywhere All At Once 2) The Fabelmans, 3) The Banshees Of Inisherin 4) Top Gun Maverick 5) Tar & 6) Elvis. I think Avatar: The Way Of Water has just enough going for it & momentum at the Box Office to give it the 7th position. The recent momentum & serge at the BAFTA's I believe gives All Quiet On The Western Front the 8th spot. So, that leaves 2 slots open in my opinion. I'm going with The Whale for 9th on the back of the PGA nomination, a late surge & predicted acting nominations for Brendan Fraser & Hong Chau. The biggest toss up in my mind is the last slot. In my mind it's between 4 titles: Babylon, RRR, Triangle Of Sadness & Women Talking. The most obvious seem to be Women Talking or Babylon based on it's other potential nominations. However, there doesn't seem to be much passion for either of them. Women Talking did poorly at the BAFTA's and Babylon seems to be very divisive and has bombed at the Box Office. Therefore, based on the passion behind both of them I think Triangle Of Sadness or RRR sneak into that final position. RRR possibly because it can't be nominated in International Feature, so, this may be the only way to honor it other than with a Best Song nomination. However, my money's on Triangle Of Sadness. It will get in my opinion a nomination for Original Screenplay and if you see Dolly De Leon's name make it into Supporting Actress earlier in the nominations announcement then I think it makes it in. If we fail to see her name in Supporting Actress then I don't think it makes it. If neither of these situations happen, then I think Women Talking will be a weak 10th Best Picture nominated movie.
@RyanCasselman
Жыл бұрын
If you're predicting Dolly De Leon and Screenplay, then it makes perfect sense that Triangle gets Picture. Cause logically, if it's got the passion to break the five, it's got the passion to break the 10. I think your logic holds. I ultimately agree with your 1-9. Since recording, I have the same 9 with Women Talking in my 10th. Women talking is a sinking ship and fast, but I think Sarah Polley worked the campaign trail enough and potentially garnered the votes needed right before the boat submerged under water. I could see your theory happening as well my friend. Good luck! 🙂
This year is difficult line up, which is a good problem to have. I’m not very good at predicting the winner but not the nominations… here’s my list just based my how I felt, not numbers. 1. Everything everywhere all at once 2. The Banshees of Inishirin 3. The Fablemens 4. Top Gun Maverick 5. Tar 6. The Whale 7. She Said 8. Elvis 9. Decision To Leave 10. Living

Crap movie.
Extremely late to comment but next year, add most BAFTA and SAG nods overall as a category. That would have given All Quiet the tie. Triangle also would have had two if you included Comedy/Musical Globe nominees - and why not? Some of them can be goofy but if so, they won't show up elsewhere.
This is great. One question though. You use PGA, DGA, and SAG. Is there a reason you do not use WGA or USC Scripter? Thank you.
@RyanCasselman
Жыл бұрын
Great question Tony! Honestly, it's WGA's rules that deems many frontrunners ineligible and skewed the results, giving points to films not really in the running. I'm sure there's a way to include WGA or Scripter in a way that could ultimately work, but I need some more time to fidget with the formula to ensure it's a strong enough indicator. Thanks again Tony!

@@RyanCasselman Thanks for the response. All good points. Keep up the good work!
Did I miss somewhere in the video where you explain why Wakanda Forever only gets 2 points when the board makes it look like three points after you add the bonus for Angela Bassett's award streak? I think Wakanda Forever can sneak in (probably at the expense of Avatar) but i'm not betting on it. I agree with your personal predictions except that Babylon gets in over Women Talking. When it comes to private balloting I think a mostly fun (or maybe too much fun) movie about the movie industry that some people have seen gets in over a bleak movie about social issues that very few have seen. Always enjoy your videos. I feel like this year must be frustrating to keep up with comments on prediction videos with all the tRRRolling going on. There's a chance it gets a nomination outside of Best Original Song, but Naatu likely. I'm glad I have proof of my early prediction of All Quiet getting in for picture and screenplay as a comment on your October video, even if now I think Edward Berger will probably beat out Park Chan-wook for the potential international slot in Best Director (though I think Park still has a shot). Looking forward to your experiment videos for the winners.

Avatar: The Way of Water 8. All Quiet on the Western Front 9. The Whale 10. Babylon Let’s see if I’m right that Women Talking only gets 1 nomination. In Score. Yeah, I’m pretty sure it misses Screenplay, believe it or not.
For my predictions I'm doing Everything, Everywhere, All At Once The Banshees of Inisherin The Fabelmans Elvis TÁR Top Gun: Maverick Avatar: The Way of Water The Whale Babylon The Woman King
While I would be devastated that RRR or The Woman King didn't make it in, I would be great with that lineup especially if Glass Onion and Aftersun miss.
Women Talking did not get screenplay at bafta. So it has only two points. I agree with the first seven. Then All quiet and the Whale have momentum and I think they are definitely in. All quiet has even a chance of getting Director. Last one is tough, it's between Babylon, Women Talking, Black Panther, Glass Onion and Triangle of Sadness. I will go with Babylon but i am expecting something else here (Triangle of Sadness or maybe Black Panther).

RRR.
Where is RRR?? It won golden globe, critcs choice award, New York critics award too
Hope RRR🌊🔥
I love your approach und the effort! Here are some unqualified thoughts: I don't see Avatar getting in. At least since coda we know how important momentum is. And as well crafted as avatar is, there is absolutely no passion behind it. It's been too long since the first film, the hype is over. Also i think Women Talking won't be nominated. So far it has only received the bare minimum, although it would be the best chance and opportunity to honor a female director. Which hasn't happened anywhere. and it wasn't even nominated for screenplay at baftas, which happened just recently. I agree with everything else. I would replace those two movies with All quiet on the western front (because of the recent momentum at the baftas and because the past couple of years there has always been a foreign language sneak in) and triangle of sadness. I know that the latter hasn't much going on for it...but there is a bit of a hype going on right now with dolly de leon. It's just a gut feeling, that this is this years shocker on Nominations day. So here is my Best Picture Nominations List: 1. The Banshees of Inisherin 2. Everything Everywhere all at once 3. The Fabelmans 4. TÀR 5. Top Gun: Maverick 6. ELVIS 7. The Whale 8. Babylon 9. Mark my words. RRR is going to be nominated for Best Picture.
Dude I hope you have a Tik Tok.
I don't have "Women Talking" - it has ZERO BAFTA nominations and it wasn't nominated by PGA, it received only two nominations from the Globes etc. so clearly no one likes this movie. But I have the other 9 and "Babylon" on the 10th position.
Babylon flopped at box office and got terrible reviews lmao. The complete opposite of RRR
My prediction for the Top 10: 1. Everything, Everywhere All at Once - will be VERY shocked if it doesn't win 2. The Fablemans - if it wins, it would be kind of a snub i can't lie to you, especially against EEAO 3. Tar - probably my 2nd pick behind EEAO 4. Elvis - biopic and hollywood's glorification type movie 5. Top Gun Maverick - military blockbuster but it was done pretty well 6. Women Talking - interchangable with the whale 7. The Whale - interchangable with women talking 8. All Quiet on the Western Front - war movie, but since it has less awards i doubt it will even come close to a win 9. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - blockbuster nomination, still appreciate it going the slow personal route as a superhero movie 10. Avatar: Way of the Water - honestly wouldn't even think to nominate it, but apparently people are okay with it so there it is...
Everyone be thinking Fabelmans and Everything Everywhere but imagine if Avatar swoops in for the win
01: Everything Everywhere All At Once 02: The Banshees Of Inisherin 03: The Fabelmans 04: Tár 05: Top Gun: Maverick 06: Elvis 07: The Whale 08: Avatar: The Way Of Water 09: All Quiet On The Western Front 10: Women Talking
