I have an Oreck XL21 and came upon your video. All I wanted to do was change out the belt. After watching your entire video I went back and rewatched, paused, and dissembled my Oreck and did almost your entire video. My Oreck was so dirty. It’s very old and is still working great. Time for me to get a replacement belt for the future. Great video, and well done. Thank you 😊

Thanks for the info. I have an Oreck XL21 manufactured 2008 and today was the day to finally change out the old brush. OMG I can't believe how easy it was and how much I've missed the self propelled action. It hadn't worked in YEARS and never understood why. I'm currently looking for ideas on how to finish maintaining my 'ol Oreck to keep it working for another 11 years. :) Many Oreck stores have closed in my area so it's time to learn how to do my own repairs.

I’ve had to hire a cleaning person because of my health but I made it clear that I have my own machines and don’t want anyone else’s machines in my house for this very reason. I still have my Oreck. I had a Maytag M500 for a while but traded it in for a Riccar R30 Pet and finally have an upright with onboard tools for the first time since my Eureka Victory Vac that went with my house fire in 2008. I kill all bugs except for beetles. I’m always afraid that they could be John or George.

I remember theses when I was a kid. I always wanted one whenever they had the infomercials of the titanium version of this. They are surely are better then the classic versions in terms of cleaning and convenience.

Watching after disassembling my Oreck XL2 as it smelled when used from years of air filtering through the bag. I did all this but remove the fan attached to motor as I now see it's clockwise to loosen. Cleaned the whole thing good and washed and soaked the outer bag in tide. Made a huge difference and now fresh as a daisy, like bran used.

One thing worth noting, that XL21 has the new style intake to the fan. The older ones had a smooth sweep, the newer ones have the catch that can save the motor from some larger items.

Thank you for demonstrating this. I took mine apart and when tilting it up after the base was off the filter fell out. I did bot see a small little filer on yours. I am not sure where it goes. I think it goes near the back where there are vent slot but not sure which way it goes flat side towards the inside of the vacuum cleaner or towards the back. Can you help me with that?

OH... so the head lamps are run off of a tap on the motor on these! I have always wondered how they did that, because the lamps are always dim on low speed and bright on high speed, and if for any reason the motor gets slowed down while running, the lamps get brighter.

Was this vacuum ever made in the USA? I remember that being a selling point. I actually bought the xl21 and returned it and got the Miele s7 Tango which was a good call. It's hard to believe that being 11 years ago. It's good to have you back from China. I was watching a previous video and I thought it was a joke at first until I noticed the background. That is a long flight.

Thanks for a great and detailed video. We have this vacuum which has been great for so many years. Recently our belt keeps coming off and burning up. We replaced the belt cover. We've checked to make sure the motor is tight. The brush roller runs free. Not sure when that has been replaced. We were taking it for it's regular repairs under warranty, however, we no longer have a local service rep for Oreck. Do you have any recommendations for what else to check or replace. Do you have a list of what you refer to a "wear items" somewhere??? Thanks

Thanks for this video. I am having an odd problem that I hope your experience can diagnose. When my Oreck XL 21 (750ECT) is on I get a fast "clicking" noise that seems to be coming from the wooden brush spinning. I replaced the wooden brush with a new wooden brush and it worked for about ten minutes before the "clicking" started again. Any idea what may be causing this issue? Thank you.

Someone please help. I have an XL21 that we bought 15 or 16 years ago. We used to love this vacuum until it started costing a lot to maintain it. Maybe we're doing something wrong. We got a 20 year warranty with it which entitles us to a free tune up every year. Every few years or so, they would replace the brush for extra at around $35. That vacuum shop has since closed and Oreck has changed ownership. Just a little over a year ago, something went wrong with our vacuum so husband opened it up and couldn't figure it out. So we brought it to a different shop and they told us the warranty is now voided. In order to bring it back under warranty, it's going to cost us $100 to replace the motor. Fast forward a year, we bring it in for the free annual tune up which ended up costing $45 for a new roller and another $5 for new bulbs. So in the span of a year, we've spent $150 on this vacuum that's still under warranty, which is almost the cost of a new vacuum. Since getting it back from the shop less than 3 months ago, we have found that the vacuum does not stay on. We thought it was an electrical problem and not a problem with the vacuum until the power plug blew up in the socket the other day causing the fire alarm to go off. I brought the vacuum back in today to have them look at it and they said it's going to cost $45 for a new cord and they are willing to do all the labor for free. It is costing us nearly $200 in a span of 13-14 months just to keep our 15 year old vacuum going while still under warranty. Should we just break warranty at this point and start ordering the parts and doing the labor ourselves? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That all sounds about right when you get a machine that old it's kind of like a car that old you'll end up putting a lot of money in maintenance to keep it going. My recommendation to you would be to consider upgrading at some point soon. Even to the newer version that Oreck makes. It's normal every two to four years to change a brush roller and a variety of other wear parts.

@@PerformanceReviews Silly me for thinking that because they were giving us a 20 year warranty when we bought it that it was going to last that long trouble free. It was one of the first things we splurged on as a newly married couple and at the time seemed worth it having such a great lightweight vacuum. I only wish we had given it more thought last year before agreeing to replace the motor for $100. I guess I just didn't foresee that all these little things would start adding up or that the power cord would blow up on me. You would still recommend Oreck vacuum cleaners? I haven't had a good experience with them or their shops since the company changed ownership a few years ago. As a side note, we drive a 19 year old Toyota that still runs great with minimal maintenance. It has 175k miles on it and we hope to put another 75k miles on it. We bought with used with 90k miles on it.

I have a whole bunch of videos with vacuum reviews of machines I recommend. I think Oreck vacuums are still King of the light weight upright category. personally I prefer a canister why hold the weight of the vacuum in your hand? My recommendation would be to go test drive something like a SEBO or Miele and see how you feel compared to your current vacuum. For reference your vacuum probably has closer to 250-300 miles on it at this point.
