    It’s kind of funny how the violence is high and brutal, none of it comes across as trying to make an edgy take on G1. That’s how great the characterization for the characters are. Especially Optimus. He wear/ his heart on his sleeve.

    This was yet another fantastic issue. The art, sound effects, and colors especially were perfect throughout. But what was especially excellent this issue was the characterization, specifically the great Autobot leader. This is easily my favorite Optimus since the Sunbow cartoon. He’s the most compassionate Prime we’ve had since before the 07 film and it’s so refreshing. I know constant references to the 86 movie are getting on a lot of fans’ nerves, understandable, but man seeing Optimus just slam into Skywarp was kick-fuckin-ass. The whole fight was perfect, it’s already one of my favorites in TF comics. I especially dug the quick succession of changing emotions at the end, from hell yeah when Prime rips off his own arm to beat Skywarp, to gut-wrenching when OP sees Spike, to hopeful determination at the end with Sparkplug. As I’ve said before I love seeing Decepticons act like absolute demons. Skywarp really had that direct, blunt cruelty, while Starscream had a petty bully cruelty. Works well. I’m really liking Skywarp’s addition to the main cast. I much prefer Thundercracker generally, but it’s nice to see the ol’teleporter get some prime panelspace for once. Love the way they used his teleportation, from the sound effect caption to the new combat application, absolutely awesome stuff. You know what though? Still a 0/10. Still no Wheeljack. Wow us Wheeljack fans keep takin’ Ls left and right. Given that he’s on the cover of the next issue perhaps our luck is soon changing, unless that cover also does not reflect the contents of the book as this one did. In which case yet another L for me lol. Jokes aside, the issue was excellent. It felt more like 5 pages than 20 some. Can’t wait to go back and read the whole thing in one sitting, but moreso I cannot wait for the next issue in January. Great review as always!!!

    Thanks, man! Appreciate your response! I agree with everything you put out there and had to chuckle at your 0/10 - because I feel your pain and you're 100% right about how the covers can't be trusted anymore! I keep thinking we're going to see Wheeljack and/or Arcee show up, and they just keep leaving us hanging with the rest of the cast. The preview for #4 says an unlikely new hero joins the battle, which...I guess could be Wheeljack? Or maybe Arcee? I dunno...that description of an "unlikely new hero" doesn't completely rule out the possibility of Autobot X, as much as I hate to say it...

  • @Moonbase3

    I think Johnson is going off of the G1 cartoon scale where Bumblebee (and by extension, Cliffjumper) was frequently drawn as being not much larger than average humans. As for your second observation, I imagine Cliffjumper flying back and out of the house was used because it was more visually dramatic, and not because it was realistic. It could be playing into over-the-top, stylized action movie/video game conventions as well. Regardless, I imagine you're right in that it's not rooted in realism. I'm no expert, but I don't think a *human* would fly back from a blast like that in the real world, let alone a Cybertronian. None of that really bothered me, though, and didn't impact my experience with the book.

  • @SavedByGRACE360
    @SavedByGRACE3606 ай бұрын

    This was really cool, but I don’t appreciate a single human being able to inflict catastrophic damage to Prime. If they’re capable of blowing off transformers limbs, it pretty much negates the need for autobot intervention at all. The whole point of the autobot presence is supposed to be because humans don’t have a weapon that can harm transformers; and would therefore be at the complete mercy of the cons.

    I get where you're coming from on that one. It didn't bother me as much because I looked at it like the humans were mostly just able to stun Optimus with heavy ordnance (as their other guns weren't capable of doing any damage). And that gave Skywarp an opening to do the real damage to Prime's arm. But I hear what you're saying.

    What I'm picking up from this series is that humans are generally too dumb to help themselves, choosing instead to attack those who try to help them instead of the ones hurting them. Optimus really should just focus on protecting nature and leave the humans to their fate.

    Some of that stuff is explored in issue 4. If you haven't read it yet, all I'll say is that there's an Autobot who agrees with your assessment. :)

    I guess I don't know enough specifics about the Bayverse to comment one way or the other. The overall tone seems quite a bit different than the two Bay movies I've seen, though.

    I kinda wish to see Optimus used his to axe to fight skywarp and as skywarp down while Optimus about to final his arm shoot by the rocket, it would have been cool but instead a person shoots Optimus’s arm without his axe which made disappointed in my opinion. At least we did see cool fight were Optimus fighting skywarp even if he has to tear his arm off.

    While this issue is good I honestly think this is probably the weakest issue so far. Mostly just felt like one long action scene. There is stuff to like here of course. I'm curious to see how Spike getting shot is gonna affect Sparkplug going forward. Is Optimus saving his son gonna be what causes him to realize the Autobots are the good guys? Or is nearly losing his son going to cause him to forbid Spike from hanging out with the Autobots? Either direction would be interesting. I don't think they're gonna kill Spike off this early. Based on the solicitation in the next issue I'm guessing Optimus is gonna use the Matrix to heal him. How that's gonna work on a human I'm not sure though.

    You raise some interesting questions about Sparkplug, ones that I'm very curious to see answered. I agree, I doubt they'll kill him off, but I'm wondering what role the Matrix will play in keeping him alive. Should be interesting, and might be the start of the series making some choices to shake things up and put some new and unexpected twists on their reimagined G1 continuity...!

    This series is kinda losing me. Art and writing are good for the most part but I think after IDW’s several years with the brand I’ve grown weary of dark transformers comics centering death and mistrustful humans shooting at Autobots and really wish we’d gotten something a lot more different. Just to be clear, I know the creative team are known for a history of darker toned books. Also, maybe this will change when Arcee joins the fray, but these comics seem to have all but dropped the progressive bent I loved so much about many of the IDW books and that’s a major shame to me. I suppose we have the Earthspark cartoon to pick up the slack at least

    I’m not digging how week the transformers are here. A shot gun making cliff jumper go flying or and rpg blowing off Optimus’ arm is shit.
