That moment when Optimus mocks Starscream for not being a warrior and shooting at a helpless enemy laying on the ground... that proves this Optimus is not a psycho like Bayverse one, and I´m all for it now.

Some fun facts from the director's commentary DWJ did on his channel, Hasbro wanted him to make some unique designs but one of his conditions taking on the project was using the timeless G1 forms. Another is Hasbro was actually very open to killing off ********** because of how overexposed he has been lately. I kinda wish he did his own designs but in the end I LOVE how everything looks in this comic. I really hope they can keep the momentum going, the first issue has been universally well received and is receiving a 2nd printing!

Thanks for bringing that in - that DWJ Director's Commentary video is awesome and people should definitely check it out. I would have integrated some tidbits from that video, but I was already in the final editing stages of this video by the time I saw it. But yeah, I was definitely surprised by some of the behind-the-scenes stuff with Hasbro that he revealed!

Man I was so excited for this issue and it did not disappoint. I know a lot of people are a little upset that we're doing the typical G1 story again(Even with reinventing the formula like the Decepticons getting control of the Ark and Bumblebee's death) but considering how IDW 2.0 didn't get the chance to go to Earth before it ended, Rise of the Beasts featuring Autobots vs Unicron and Earthspark being a post-war story, I'm more than happy to go back to basics with something nice and simple like this. I guess if there's one thing I'm kinda upset over it's Bumblebee's death. It's not enough to be a turn-off for me, I don't think it ruins the comic or it's necessarily bad. But given how this is really the first time in a long while we've had classic Spike Witwicky and they're doing a lot of things to homage the G1 cartoon I would have really liked to see a new take on Spike and Bumblebee's friendship. I don't think we've really explored that since Dreamwave and that got cut short. Still, there is so much to like in this issue. The pacing is excellent and the action scenes are perfection. I think my favorite scene is probably Optimus cradling Bumblebee's body(Ironic given what I said earlier) and Spike due to his own experience with loss is able to empathize with him. It makes absolute sense this is what gets Spike to realize the Autobots are the good guys and why they should help them. So much done with so few words. Daniel Warren Johnson in his director's commentary mentioned this was one of his favorite scenes he's ever done in anything ever and it's not hard to see why. I'm so pumped for Issue 2. I can't wait to see more of this ride Johnson has in store for us.

  • @Moonbase3

Yes! Excellent post! I know I was kind of flippant over the deaths in the video, but they're extremely well-done in terms of the overall impact to the story. That's what I'm really loving about this issue - it's never violence for the sake of violence. There's a genuine sense of tragedy and loss (and horror in the case of Davey) that makes it all affecting and important. And I 100% agree about the moment where Spike realizes Optimus is one of the good guys. That was probably one of the most logical and effective ways I've seen humans forge an alliance with Transformers across any TF media.

Honestly hope with the cradling scene this version of Prime is more of the ‘dad’ figure he was in the cartoon. Since most iterations stuck with the Unbreakable iron will archetype. Because I remember Peter Cullen’s quote that his brother told “Don’t be one of those Hollywood heroes pretending their tough. Just be strong and real. Tell the truth. Be strong enough to be gentle.”

Oh how I’ve been looking forward to this. First of all, fantastic analysis as always! So let me weigh in on a few things, apologies in advance for the novel: 1 - The artistry in this book is electric. There are certain things I disagree with DWJ over (specifically not adhering to a time period), but I cannot deny the quality of the art and the energy of the writing. I foresee this book becoming one of those comics fans continue to come back to year after year. 2 - I know you’re not supposed to do this, but given the nature of the channel I gotta compare this to Infiltration. Not directly, at least not yet because that’s not even remotely fair, but just certain aspects. For one, just as in Infiltration, Starscream is leader of the Decepticons at first. This was a wise decision in IDW and it is a wise decision now. Look no further than the episode “Megatron Rising” from Transformers Animated to see what good build up to Megatron can do for a series. Unlike Infiltration however, we’re starting from a very familiar place rather than the reboot idea from IDW. Is this as smart a decision? Who knows, we’ll have to see how the arc plays out, but I do think it is worth noting now. Little bit of crossover in the cast too, Wheeljack, Ratchet, Starscream, Skywarp, and of course Optimus. 3 - The characterization of Optimus Prime is perfect so far. This is something I think IDW struggled with throughout their hold of the license, but here it is straight cartoon G1. Of course it’s all personal preference, but for my money that show is the gold standard for Optimus. 4 - As I predicted on Reddit (I think), Ratchet had an opening moment of badassery, kicking Screamer right in the gut like he did Thundercracker in the cartoon. We love to see it. 5 - On that note I am still a bit salty they picked Skywarp over Thundercracker. Admittedly I’m quite biased since TC is my second favorite Decepticon, but he’s so interesting! I suppose they want to distance themselves from IDW, still salty regardless. Luckily DWJ clarified in his “director commentary” that TC is not dead, which is what I thought at first. 6 - I feel Bumblebee fans’ pain, but at the same time it is nice to finally see Cliffjumper get to thrive while BB is killed off for shock value. How many times now has Cliff been the disposable character while Bee gets the spotlight? We’re subverting expectations here. And in any case DWJ said his Hasbro rep even asked for Bumblebee to be sidelined, so even Hasbro is getting a bit tired of the lil guy. Sorry Bee. 7 - Finally, on the subject of Starscream’s kill late in the issue: this is what sold me on the book. Well this and the characterization of Optimus Prime. There are two things at play here, one is Starscream’s character and the other is the depiction of Decepticons. In my opinion, this ending highlights one of Starscream’s less explored but vitally important traits, his petty cruelty. It’s as crucial to a good Starscream as his ambition or cowardice. Most Starscreams have it, but very rarely do we get to just see it in action. This is a blunt statement: this Starscream take pleasure in the death and suffering of others. That leads me to the second point, the Decepticons as a whole. IDW had a lot of Decepticon apologia, they weren’t so bad they were just oppressed. I liked that, I think it added some great nuance and led to interesting stories, but I have always been against that as a standard depiction for the ‘cons. I’ve jokingly said, “My ideal Megatron is one step removed from being an actual demon from literal hell,” but I do actually kind of want that, especially after IDW 05 did such great work with sympathetic Decepticons. It’s time we make them evil again. Not bad, evil. We can have a few sympathetic cons like Thundercracker, Skywarp, and Soundwave sure, but I want the majority (and especially high command) to be evil. I want Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave, Straxus, Bludgeon, Sixshot, Onslaught etc etc to be Robodevils in Disguise. Mostly irredeemable monsters with no regard for anything outside their own power. Not just cartoon bad guys, but actually showing the harm they do to humans. In any case this post is long enough, so I’ll just wrap up by saying I’m very optimistic about the future of TF comics, I can’t wait for issue 2, and I hope they revive Wheeljack early because a year of comics without my favorite Autobot is gettin’ to me. Great video as always!

  • @Moonbase3

Thank you, good sir! Man, there is some good stuff here in your post, appreciate you taking the time to share. I'll follow your lead and reply point by point: 1. 100% agree. I usually can read an issue once and be good for a while (unless I'm doing a video on it), but this issue I genuinely wanted to read multiple times already. Even now, having put a video out, I already want to go back and re-read it, so I think your assessment is dead on and the quality is going to keep bringing people back. 2. Great comparisons to Infiltration and Animated here. Time will tell whether this sense of familiarity will be stronger than a more extensive reboot like Infiltration, but I'm optimistic. I'm so pumped to see how they build to Megatron...I hope they take their time. 3. This version of Optimus has everything I loved about the guy from the old cartoon and the 86 animated movie, so definitely agree there. 4. Dude! That's a great catch about the kick! I missed that!! 5. I also prefer Thundercracker, and I think your theory about wanting to stand out from IDW makes sense. I also wonder if they picked Skywarp because he's got a handy teleport ability that could open up some plot possibilities/solutions that TC wouldn't have. Or at least, I'm assuming he still has it - we don't really see it in this issue, but that could be due to low energon. 6. Excellent point about subverting expectations. It's pretty wild that Hasbro specifically asked that Bumblebee not be used. 7. So much good stuff here that had me nodding along! I feel like DWJ really got Starscream in a way that IDW writers didn't - or chose not to, because, as you point out, they took the Decepticons as a whole in a different direction. I loved what IDW did with Megatron's revolution and how his dream became violent and corrupt, and, likewise how the Autobots' hands weren't clean either - but it's definitely refreshing to see Heroic Autobots pitted against Evil Decepticons. Certainly helps it stand out from what IDW did as well.

Really loved this issue. Its my first real dive into TF comics and I think it establishes a familiar yet fresh take. Set some great emotional stakes for the humans and the Autobots, planted some good seeds of mystery (wheres Megs), and solidified that it might not be everything you expect with that final panel! G1 Starscream with blood splatter all over him was wild to see, and I think works as a great call out to the fact that this isn’t the cartoon we all know and love, despite the familiar designs. Awesome, that all makes sense. Thanks! As for recommendations...in terms of WHAT, I'd recommend these to start with: Stormbringer 1-4 Autocracy Last Stand of the Wreckers 1-5 More than Meets the Eye Marvel US 56-80 The War Within 1-6 Target: 2006 Transformers 84: Secrets and Lies As for HOW, that's a little tricky as Skybound hasn't started reprinting anything yet. It might be best to wait for them to start that process as it'll be the most affordable. You might be able to find the odd trade, hardcover, or run of singles here or there, but some can be quite expensive on the aftermarket. You can probably find floppies of War Within and Stormbringer pretty easily and at a reasonable price at an online comic store with back issues like Lonestar Comics, G-Mart, or Dreamland, or, even easier, eBay or Mercari. Hopefully there was something helpful in this answer!
