actually, since you are going to expand - why not a german band called "in extremo", you will find some similiar singing on some of there songs. but overall he has a interesting rasp in his voice. Suggestions: Meresburger Zaubersprüche II (live), Herr Mannelig, Poc Vocem, Liam Liam... enjoy :)

I saw them live at the Norwegian Tons of Rock festival in 2019, and lemme tell you - them performing for a huge audience of vikings made the most powerful atmosphere I've ever experienced. By the end of the concert, ALL of us vikings were putting our fists in the air by the rythm and yelling HU HU HU HU HU in perfect unison, and the band was so humbled by the gesture. Probably the most powerful music-related experience of my life.

I was lucky enough to see them live as well. This video is great, but I agree that it cannot compare to the energy of being in the crowd and joining in with that chant. So powerful.

@@billholder1330 At one time Vikings and HU were one and the same. HU started out a very tall Caucasian gingers. Over time they mixed with the Northern Chinese. The HU are the result.

The 3-stringed "guitar" is called a tovshuur The horse-headed bowed instruments are called morin khuur, aka horsehead fiddle

Best way to live life

I've become (mildly) obsessed with this band over the last year or so. I got to photograph their shows twice last year, and there's actually 8 performing members: The four "front" guys, plus a standard guitar and bass, a traditional drummer, and a percussionist with kettle-style drums. I was fortunate enough to meet them for just a few moments after the first show, and they're all incredibly nice guys. When touring starts happening again, I cannot - CAN NOT!!! - recommend enough for everyone to get out and see them. Their music is incredible, and it's so much better live. 🐺

How lucky you are to have met them! I am disabled, and aging, so I don't get out much, but when it is again safe for them to tour the US, I will somehow find a way to attend a concert.

If you want to "meet" them, look up the "Hu's in the Kitchen" videos where they cook together. You really do get a sense that they're very humble, down to earth, funny guys. Made me like them even more.

I love the fact that you have actually researching and you are classically trained. These guys trained at the Mongolian Music Conservatory. Throat Singing takes years of training.

Agreed. Certain types of music, can create such a visceral reaction that it transcends language. I have seen very few people who watched/listened to Wolf Totem who didn't express that it made them feel somehow stronger or more energized, or like they could take on any obstacle, even without the lyric translation. I think this is a big part of their international success. Deep down, we are more alike inside than we are different, and they've hit on a shared quality in humanity with their music.

And that's also reason why some people don't like this type of singing. For example some metalheads would prefer Yat-Kha without vocals.

I would be surprised if there werent any fighters using The Hu as their walk-out music! Just the Hu hu hu hu hu hu part would have the crowds losing their minds!

So this was actually a traditional war chant used by the Mongolians during the time of Ghengis Khan. It didn't (most likely) have music set to it back then but was probably more just shouted for intimidation effect and I am certain that many were suitably intimidated afterward. Hu in their language means people. So Hu Music is People music. Interesting stuff. They are a really unique band.

@@dismas8884 Are you sure on that? Mongolia was ruled by China for large parts of the beginning and end of the 17th century. The Yuan dynasty until 1635 and then by the end the Qing dynasty. They wouldn't actually be independent until 1911 and struggled to get independence until 1921. Just saying. Would seem an odd time for a war chant to be popular. However if you have some evidence I would love to see it!

@@phreak811 during the 17th century there was a mongolian prince called tsogt taij, he defended mongolia from qing empire. He also destroyed many chinese armies. So chinese cant seem to conquer mongolia by force started looking for other ways. So chinese send many buddhist monks to pacify and subvert mongolians. When buddhism won, mongolian spirit died with it.

@@dismas8884 Cool! I love learning about history and that was a part I did not know! Thank you! I knew Buddhism saw a major uptick in Mongolia during that time but not why. Also I may have been a bit off because wasn't the Yuan dynasty at the beginning of the 17th century the remnants of Genghis Khans actual empire? I think they were cause I know the Mongols had a dynasty in China....but I can't remember. Anyway thank you! I have learned a new thing today!

Drums existed and were portable. so you could have a beat with the chant. chant+beat=Music. Many army's played music or did war chants it's a pretty common practice across cultures. It's something to do on the march and helps keep morale high, as well as make you and your group look like you are well coordinated and that can be pretty intimidating. War and music go together like bread and butter. It is recorded that roman legions would sing songs and play music while they marched and camped. Unfortunately they never recorded music in the roman empire so we don't know any of the songs.

They are fantastic live. The whole crowd was chanting and stomping and I thought we were going to bring the building down. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. Sadly, and luckily, one of the last things I did before Covid.

This song certainly taps into a an instinctive human rhythm. You find yourself rocking without realising.

Mongolian is normally written in Cyrillic script, though they are going to phase that out apparently by 2025 in favor of using traditional Mongolian script (the way it was originally written). Interestingly, and I only learned this because I was reading about Kazakhstan after getting into Dimash lol - Kazakhstan is also phasing out writing Kazakh in Cyrillic by 2025, in favor of the Latin alphabet. And they actually had a proposed way of writing one of the characters in the Latin alphabet that they changed twice.. Basically it was like a letter and an apostrophe at first, and now there’s a specific accent mark for it. Shop owners had to change signs twice, textbooks are being changed across the country. It takes a lot of resources!! That is almost entirely off topic, but I thought someone might find this interesting xD

@batlklhagva The Mongolian adopted a lot in their history, they had no own scripture until 1208 (Tatar-Tonga/Uighur, Empire of Dschingis Khan).

@E. Soup Did you know Mongolian and Kazakh were archenemies for a long period? Kazakh were mostly dominant until Dschingis Khan created his empire. Even today Kazakh steal horses from Mongolian nomads. But they do not do war like in the past, maybe some revenge.

@batlklhagva Those 38km (today) away from Mongolia is not much, is it? Do you know about the Kazakh-Khanat (mid 17th century to 19th century)? No? I´m curious about your knowledge, because I´ve referred about ancient times not of today. If you look up the history of Dschingis Khan and his his feuds with the Kazakh, where he exterminated entire "tribes", this speaks for themselves. And by the way, I watched a documentary about Mongolian horse breeder and in this documentation said a Mongolian what I have quoted here. I'm not someone who sucks stories out of my fingers, I love human history far too much for that. You do not seem very much to know about the history of both peoples.

There is a very good reason why, even after a solid thousand years, mothers still warn their children to fear the Mongol Hordes. Their warrior culture has few equals throughout history. Even though in the Western histories we rarely learn much about it in the Eastern histories they are still feared and respected. This is a war song given new and modern life. That power comes from a very ancient place echoing up to this day. Amazing performance, and a proud warrior tradition.

It still blows me away how utterly absent mentions of the mongols are in western history. They did what neither Napoleon or Hitler could; to conquer russia in winter. Despite the Great Wall, they conquered all of China. During their conquest of the Khwarazmian empire, think central asia extending from modern day china and consuming Iran and Afghanistan, they killed 1.7 million people. A quarter of every man, woman, and child in the empire. They annihilated two armies of crusaders, one of them being made up of Knights Templar. The only land between the mongols and the atlantic ocean were what is modern day Germany and France. That's it. It's estimated that by the end of their expansion, they had killed 10% of all human beings on Earth, and they never stepped foot on the americas, africa, or australia. 1/10 of all the people in the world, dead.

@@TooneySA 20,000 actually wasnt all that many. The 20,000 strong mongol force led by Subotai and Jebe when europeans encountered them the first time wasn't an invasion force. That action was just a reconnaissance in force campaign. That they beat the russian force of 80,000 should've gotten Europe's attention, but they were too busy competing with each other. The actual invasion of central Europe was a mongol army of 70,000 in the main force; seven tumens. 2/3 of them mounted archers, the last third of mounted heavy lancers. Unlike their european opponents, the whole force fought from horseback except for the engineers operating the stonethrowers. Once again, Subotai was the general that masterminded the invasion. 700 years before WWI, he pioneered the tactic of using a creeping barrage from his siege engines as his soldiers advanced. This would also be Europe's first large scale encounter with an enemy force using gunpowder. The templars that road against them fought to the last man, but even in the best armor of the time period couldnt protect against explosives.

Been listening to the Hu for months now, they still bring chills to my spine, wolf has always been my favorite!!

This song is a call to arms. A battle cry. After many centuries of oppression the Mongolian people have become very strong and deserve respect for all they have accomplished yet oppressors still come. I give mad respect to the Mongolian people and I can identify with their core beliefs. “ Be peaceful when times are good, be tough when times are hard, and show no mercy when attacked 👍👍👍 I love this song 😁👍

The formally most feared people on Earth have become an afterthought since gunpowder, but I'll never forget the thousands of years when horse archers dominated the battlefield. It's a shame that Mongolia is a geopolitical afterthought now because it was the most feared culture on Earth for most of recorded history and I'd like to see us show some respect. I don't know who wins World War 3, but WW4 will be won by mongolian horse archers parading through nuclear ruins.

@maggiereneemusic Throat singing primary use vocal folds. It is a mix of two sounds from the cords and folds. It takes a lot of practice but doesn't really hurt the voice.

I am a high school teacher. Who is also "extra" and I had to wait all day to finally get to watch. You did not disappoint. I have been a fan of The Hu for about a year now. Really good stuff. 🐺

I love how you'll pause the music and be like, "wait, what are they talking about here?" This is my first time coming across this channel and I really like how you dig into the meaning of the lyrics and actually make an effort to understand the culture behind the band before actually diving into the music, even if it’s not in a language you understand. The instruments (from an interview in The Irish Times): "The Hu sound is all about traditional Mongolian instruments and their unique sounds. We use Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (three-stringed lute), Tsuur (Mongolian flute) and Tumur Khuur (Jew’s harp)."

Exactly this. I love how their heritage shines through in the instruments too. The horse and bow are the two most important symbols in their culture, and they incorporated them INTO the instruments.

Yuve Yuve Yu is my favorite Hu song

The Hu videos are very impressive. I love Yuve Yuve Yu. The animals referenced are other countries that surround Mongolia like Russia, China, India (elephant) Another interesting example of throat singing occurs in the duet of Dimash and Tengger (Tengri) Swan Goose. These instruments are also used and it’s amazing how they can imitate nature sounds. Tengger is a king of dynamics (also check out Heaven performed in the singer. Breathtaking)

I had the privilege to see this band live when they opened for Babymetal Oct 2019 in Seattle. They were amazing, and did this singing thru the entire set on those really cool instruments... Amazing show... And Babymetal live is phenomenal ...

One of my fave songs/groups currently. Tribal, raw & wild.

I'm going to join the "Song of women with Lzzy" reaction bandwagon. It's a very empowering/touching song and showcases how throat singing can be integrated with contemporary singing styles. It also features a little bit of the Sygyt (in the Tuvan language) style of throat singing. This style is a very high overtone/whistle style and has been the hardest to learn for me so far :p .

There was also a particular style of throat singing that is native to the Northern Germanic tribes and the Norse. Heilung is a proto-folk metal group that uses that style of throat singing, and you will probably really love them.

This is my favorite badass battle anthem EVER because it makes it clear that they don't want a fight. There's no "we're coming to get you," just a great deal of "if you come at us, we have ways to make you regret it." Makes it easy to see why ancient armies heard the Mongols were coming and were all "You don't have to attack! Just let us open our gates for you and come on in. We made you lunch..." It's always so wonderful seeing someone get as excited about music as I do 💙 "Yuve Yuve Yu" is another good one by these guys, that feels a little more folk-rock than metal. So glad you enjoyed these awesome guys. It's amazing seeing and hearing how different music is all over the world.

I had the good fortune to see them a couple months ago and it's amazing to hear them keep up the singing for an entire show. Plus, this music just transports you somewhere else.

The guy in the brown jacket puts so much chaos but so much control into his playing. I've never seen it played before but I can tell he plays it well.

You don't have to react to this, but if you look up "Jason Ellis - Mongolian Throat Singing" you'll get to see them do a bunch of stuff live. Sounds amazing. And it's a Horse Head Fiddle that they are playing with the bow, and the "guitar" is a tovshuur. Suggestion: Falling in Reverse - The Drug in Me is You (Reimagined)

@@maggiereneemusic Note how the Tovshuur resembles a recurve horse bow, the one the mongols used to conquer everything in their path.. Now that you're ready to pillage the steppes try "Run" by Skald. Very Norse. You'll be in the mood to plunder a seacoast after that. I appreciate the way the video blended American motorcycle mystique with the intro and ending. Are they saying these are the natural heirs to the Golden Horde? Tough looking crew there. Even the nice-looking one looks like he's ready to put an arrow through your throat at a hundred yards.

@@maggiereneemusic And that horse-head fiddle can perfectly imitate the neighing/whinnying of a horse. You can hear it in the second video they uploaded, "Yuve Yuve Yu". They are also the basis for an alien Star Wars band. They provide the music and singing for the main character's favorite band in the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game.

I see that this video was from months ago but what I find interesting is that those artists in their own right, be it opera, country, rap and several vocal coaches as well all love the music, the voices, the meaning behind the lyrics.... they understand and feel MUSIC. How music stirs the soul.

Dear Maggie, you made me GIGGLE so hard. You were in bed when the display changed from 6:59 to 7:00 but the alarm clock showed 5:00. LOL The word Hu is the Mongolian root word for Human. Mongolia & Kazakhstan both have a number of 2 string instruments. 🎶👱‍♀️👗👠👠🐺🐺

Song of Women made me cry the first, second and third time I listened to it. And the ninth time. And the sixteenth.

Maggie my dear, I've heard of throat singing before. There is an episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon, to annoy Leonard, starts throat singing. It's hilarious. They also have had guest singers performing with them. For Wolf Totem, Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach sings the lyrics in English. Another one is with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm performing "Song of Women." She add her own lyrics to the song with the lead Hu vocalist singing the Mongolian lyrics. The video and song is quite beautiful. I highly recommend listening to this. The instruments are as follows: Morin Khuur, also known as the Horse head fiddle is the stringed intrument played with the bow. The Tovshuur is the lute like instrument comprising of two or three strings. They also in some of their compositions incorporate the Tumur Khuur and the Tsuur. The Tumur Khuur is the Mogolian version of the Jews Harp. The Tsuur is a closed end flute of different sizes. Also, I appreciate you mentioning the Theorbo. It reminds me of the sitar from India. i love how a Julliard trained opera singer is floored by Mongolian throat singing that is epic no one does vocals like the mongols so bow praise and enjoy the hu

I remember when I discovered The Hu. I was just goofing around on KZread searching random words in front of metal. I've definitely never looked back. So much cool music out there if you just look for it.

Stumbled onto The Hi while wandering through KZread.....their sound grabbed me viscerally.....shortly after that I found they were appearing in concert in my town. I went to see them and I cannot put into words the primal, tribal feeling it gave me. If you like them PLEASE see them live.

There is a doc called "the weeping camel" that comes from Mongolia. The instrument is kinda like a violin, the people in the doc must go get someone who can play that instrument for the camel who had a difficult birth of her baby who is shunning it. Somehow playing the instrument influences the camel to accept her baby.

Seen em live in europes first live apperance in the sage club berlin. The whole mongolian embassy was there. Was standing like 2 meters away from the band and you could even shake their hands.

I can't be the only person who has said that the motorcycle was called the iron horse, so coming up with the horse was showing the old and the new, so to speak. Great video, yet again, Maggie. :)

The instrument represents as the horse and sounds like a horse. It's a battlecry.

I love one of their softer songs - Shireg Shireg. There are several videos of them performing it (the Jason Elliot show one has a throat singing demo at the end). It really shows the range of their mastery of throat singing from the gutteral growl to polyphonic trills. You can also see Jaya's amazing flute playing and Enkush's incredible throat singing. They are all clasically trained and many have taught music. Nintendo has licensed one of their songs! Temka plays the Tovshuur (the guitar like instrument), Enkush and Gala play the Morin Khuur (the horse head fiddle), and Jaya plays mouth harp and flute.

He mostly sung using "kargyraa" style , where the sound is produced by false vocal folds and it is one of the 3 main TS style . Let me know if you wanna see and hear a STUNNING throat singing , i'll send you the link ! Mongolian , nor Tuvan , TS is very a very difficult strong tho , with a lot of abdominal sustain .

The Hun's, sounds like the Hon in Honey. The Hun's were most famous as invaders from the north-east of the Roman Empire who invaded Europe in the 4th century AD, and their most famous leader in the west was Attila, also called Attila the Hun.

That 2 string instrument is called Morin Khuur which means "horsehead fiddle". The guitar-like instrument is called Tovshuur which is a 3-stringed lute. The Hu also uses the Tsuur which is a Mongolian flute and the Tumur Khuur which is called Jew's harp.
