OpenGOAL - Outset Island with level boundaries, tasks and progress menu page

Ойындар

Using ruh's custom Outset Island level ( • Outset Island in Senti... ) because I was too lazy to make my own, I added:
- Level boundaries to Sentinel Beach to load the level in as you're walking towards it
- Tasks, so the power cells you can get actually count towards the total (meaning there are 104 power cells you can have in total, minus one that wouldn't be counted because of a small bug I couldn't figure out)
- Proper scout fly and orb counts, so you get that pop up when you collect every orb and the last scout fly drops a power cell
- A page for the level in the progress menu keeping track of all tasks
Just a small experiement to try to "seamlessly" integrate a custom level into the game.

    I think technically yes. The cutscene for the Powercell in each location is always the same, and is calculated by some hash function. You just need to keep moving it until it selects the slam dunk one. Due to it's sensitivity even moving the Powercell a minuscule amount will change the hash.

    So question: how hard would it be to change the ladder on the lookout tower to normal platforms. You should be able to just make changes in blender, correct? Also, I like what you did with the launcher. It would be fascinating to see if other modders could make more of a puzzle about how to get the eco to the launcher in time.

    Yes, I added support for floats in res-lump tags so I could give the launcher a spring-height without having to set it manually. I also did the same for vectors so I could set the movie-pos for each scout fly crate, but I don't think that's strictly necessary for them to work. Out of curiosity, how come we only get modding effort such as this now and not, say, 8 years ago? Has the community been reverse engineering the game all this time? Or simply someone of your talent hasn't looked at doing something like this until now? Has modern PC hardware enabled this in some way that 2015 PC's couldn't handle?

  • @HatKid

    @HatKid

    2 ай бұрын

    There have been previous efforts to reverse engineer Jak and Daxter: Somebody made a blog post in 2017 (www.codersnotes.com/notes/disassembling-jak/ ) about a small project they worked on called "goaldis", which reverse engineered the game's linker, allowing us to get a full disassembly of all the game's code, but nothing else beyond that. It was more out of curiosity than an actual effort to allow for modding/porting the game to other platforms. OpenGOAL, which allowed for all of this to be possible, didn't start development until August 2020. It built upon goaldis by writing an actual decompiler which eventually gave us the ability to figure out the game's source code and port the game to PC. Once Jak 1 was ready for release around April 2022, with the entire source code available for us to mess around with, people soon began working on mods. Long story short, to answer your question: It's mostly just that we haven't had anybody take a really deep dive into the game's internals until goaldis and OpenGOAL came along. Modding the original PS2 game to such a degree was simply not feasible before and having the full source code available is the only reason things like this became possible.

    OpenGOAL still hasn't covered Jak 3. Some people speculate that, by the end of this year, it could be done. Some mods have already popped up for Jak 2, so it's probably only a matter of time that we get some custom levels like this one there.
