The build will be released in at most a few days.
Recorded in PCSX2, this is the cause of the graphical glitches and the speedups. Had to use software mode because graphical issues were too bad.

They are dark eco canisters. Guards in Jak II shoot the same thing in the Dig Site, but texture is bugged in all versions. Also, there was a Boom Stick weapon in Jak II before the Peace Maker, and its projectile was basically the same dark eco canister that dig site guards use in final version.

Actually thinking about it some more. It would have been really cool if throughout the sewer levels you catch glimpses of this thing stalking you. Like seeing it scurrying across the ceiling in the distance, watching you from behind grates, occasionally seeing a targeting laser from behind but disappear before you can see from where. Then at the very end it crawls up the ledge to confront you. That would have really fit the scout part of it's name.
For an alpha build, it's pretty crazy how complete a lot of it looks.

It was never officially called alpha, I just named it that since it is software in a state that is not feature-complete. And afaik that is the definition of alpha.

Even still I remember developers talking about how in the first game alot was cut because they building a game and the engine. Where as jak 2 and 3 use that engine, the developers would've had alot more experience plus a pretty good base to start with.

This would have been a version only four months out from the release of the game, if this is from July 2004, so I'd imagine it is pretty close to finished. Jak 3 was also developed with Jak 2 as a base, and I imagine a lot of basic systems, animations, even many models and assets were simply ported over from that game and already "complete" from the start.

4 months is extremely long time in game development. But if I recall correctly, this is not that old, because the final build was done a while before the release (this was normal back then because they couldn't just fix bugs later in a patch). The Hidden Palace page should tell how old this is.

I love this video The Jak & Daxter trilogy and Jak X really gave me a nice childhood Seen Jak3 this way in early development makes me happy. Seen how this game evolved and improved is so cool.
The mass inverter was going to be a BLACK HOLE GUN?! They should have kept it!

Or having both, with one as an alt fire could've been cool, but I don't know how they would've translated that to the controls. Maybe you have to crouch while you shoot to release the black hole after charging it up or something?
10:45 so if Damas didnt ditch the rollcage he would have survived🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😐😶😶😶

The entire water side of Haven City looks the way it does in Jak II, missing powerlines and tubes to move around the platform towers, and the glider meter also works as the unfinished vehicle health meter. Probably a lot more differences.
11:31 i always believed that there was something like a mini-boss there or something.
Seeing the way the "black hole" gun absorbs the guards, it seems as if it was a nod to the warp balloons in Crash Bandicoot Warped! Very interesting stuff, thank you

They were in development around the same time, but it also reminds me of the singularity/black hole grenade from Half-Life 2 Beta.

Awesome video! I didn't know that the Alpha was still out there - it's impressive how close it is to the final version though. I recently tried out PCSX2 after having left it for a few years and Jak 3 runs so much more smoothly now. Also waiting patiently for OpenGOAL to port Jak II and 3 to run natively on PC but thankfully they've got the first game working at least.
Love how invisibility power works here. Oh and the cut enemy too
Other differences I noticed that you didn't show in the video: You can destroy your veichles in the garage without triggering a game over Desert cars physics are way different, they feel like there's less gravity. There are more enemies in some stages and usually they take more hit pointrs to be killed Precursor's Robot Boss Battle has enemies with a different color, also you can't kill them only by shooting at them (in the final game, you can kill them with punches too) In the same boss battle, the cargos you have to throw to the boss have less hit points, you can literally throw them down with 3 bullets, you need a lot more hits in the final game to do so. There's an inedit mission after you get the Dark Punch power for Dark Jak, you can't complete it sadly. Jinx has brown hair, also his mission isn't really working properly 2nd and 3rd arena missions have the stage layout swapped, complete with a different cutscene when you meet Sig. When you get back to Haven City, Keira isn't there and Samos is stuck on a T-Pose, it triggers the wrong cutscene and trying to pass the barrier with debug mode somehow kills you immediately with an explosion. Also, maybe you don't really care about it, but Italian translation still has some typos in the subtitles,that they obviously weren't in the final game (for example, you can see "Jack" instead of "Jak" sometimes, that happened to the EU Jak 3 stand-alone demo also). If in the Italian version you eject the disk, you can read the title written as "Jak 3: Renegade", which is likely a poorly modified leftover, but still worth nothing in my opinion. I remember a Ratchet 3 beta that had a pretty big amout of interesting differences in Italian language that the other 4 languages didn't have, I can't really tell if this is the same case, I'm looking forward to find some of them in this beta too.
Antigrav gun is actually a black hole gun? That's so much cooler
Wow, first time I saw stuff like this for Jak, searching for early builds of games I like is a passtime of mine, good to know you guys have videos like this to show us all the interesting stuff.
Black hole gun seems a bit too Ratchet and Clank which is why they changed it, maybe.
Wow that pisses me off that they still had the guard alert system in this build but took it out in the final game. I get it, the Crimson Guards aren't evil anymore and there is a war going on in the city but it doesn't mean the police force would be total pushovers to crime.

I suppose they removed because there is not enough space for being chased, I mean 2/3 of Haven are in constant battle with the KG bots it would probably mess with their AI or something.

This alpha proves that the sand shark was someone’s favorite with the sand shark taking the place of the 3 bonus vehicles

They are just placeholders. Were never planned to be sand sharks, and they indeed ended up as unique cars.

Shame they removed the roll-cage from the Slam Dozer.
In jak 3, the ign video of jak 2 health bar is present when the video took place in the sewers when the game was in develope.
So infinite flying wasn't a glitch until it became a glitch...hmmm, damn didn't know that.
Weird that the Beam Reflexor actually did once consume 2 ammo per shot as opposed to 1. While playing Jak 3 I always think something like that would make the weapon a bit more balanced, and always thought the identical ammo consumption to the normal Blaster was just an oversight or mistake.

Does it still use one ammo per enemy hit in this early build? Or was it just double consumption flat-rate? I think one ammo per hit in the final version is pretty fair.
Even if this isn't a true "alpha" build of the game, it makes sense how "complete" things look. Considering it's the same engine, a lot of the same assets for vehicles, npc models (including guards) etc. Still a good video
8:26 That gun is sick as hell. I want that one in the full game lol.
We've seen the Scouter Robot before, in the gun course with the round spider-looking bots that blow up.

5:55 I don't think I saw that remains of the support tower like that in the final game?

@@LuminarLight There are 2 support towers near the port. That support tower "stub" at 5:55 got moved away from that location in the final version.
it would had been cool if they kept the jak2 stuff like the alert system and the guard turrets and the one that the baron talk on to add more life to haven city but i like the early version

I don't think it would've made much sense lore-wise though, because Jak isn't a rogue fugitive like he was in 2, but a war hero with divided opinions on him.

Maybe you're thinking of the statues for the Jetboard challenges in Haven Forest that unlock the observatory tower?

If you were referring to the big stone head statue in the Desert, it is basically Squidward's house from Spongebob.
Guards turrents now will be cool.

Hey Luminar, I believe the free camera in Jak 3 doesnt work anymore while Debug Mode is active. I just tried it and it seems that I cant get the game to free roam while cutscenes are playing. Any idea on this?

During gameplay there is no problem, only during cutscenes is where I noticed the issue. I wanted to check something out after I saw the video of Jak and Ashelin kissing but apparently I cant get it to work.
