Open Bar #53 - Across The Spider Verse Dominates, Hemsworth Slams Thor, Disney Selling Lucasfilm?!

Ойын-сауық

Everything's coming up Sony this week with Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse getting great reviews and strong box office. On the other hand, Chris Hemsworth has slammed Love and Thunder for being too stupid and silly. And could Disney actually be thinking about selling off Lucasfilm, and who would even want to buy it?

I love Thor in Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, he was noble, humble and I also love the way he spoke in the Shakespearean manner. I really don't like what the MCU have done with him. A bumbling goofy idiot with horrible jokes. What a waste.

George Lucas might actually be able to buy back Lucasfilm at a significant discount Haim Saban did something similar, when he sold Disney Power Rangers for a huge sum, then bought it back for far less from them, after Disney ran it into the ground. I disagree with the assertion that Gwen just switched her motivation on a whim near the end. When she returned to her universe and reconciled with her father, she realized that he would survive because he quit his job as Captain. This only happened because Renaissance Vulture had appeared, and this all happened because of Miles getting bitten. So, in this case, the disruption of a canon event led to a positive outcome. This leads Gwen to the conclusion that it's not universal fact that Miles trying to save his father would lead to a negative ending like Miguel believes.

  • @thewerepyreking

    @thewerepyreking

Agreed, I thought it was pretty straightforward. Also that their fates aren't written completely in stone. However Gwen and Miles kinda come across as naiive for thinking just because the canon event was prevented and they only waited for a few hours and nothing happened that it's fine. Maybe that's the point though, that they are young and not jaded like Miguel

Gwen felt rootless and had no one to confide to, she was utterly depressed. Then the first film happened and she had friends again that fully understood her, only to lose them again. Her only (self perceived) hope of belonging was her father, that betrays her at the start of the film. So as a homeless teen feeling bereft of choices clutches hard on this cool group of people that give her a new home, a place to belong; She literally asks to be adopted by Pregnant Spider-woman, And Miguel as a distant male authority figure is almost functions as a stand-in for a father figure. The group of people she wanted to be a part of abandon her, and the impetus for joining them, the father betraying her is resolved. this leaves her with no reason to toe the line any more, especially since saving Miles - who has been on her side always - from 42 is more important.

As for the baby, I was fine with it when Peter first shows up. I did think the bathrobe was a bit much, but the thing I kept noticing is that he kept subtly undermining Miguel's pomposity. He was pointing out that Miguel (as a spiderman) should have at least some sense of humor. Peter knew how Miguel felt able Miles and was totally trying to defuse the situation. Also, he seemed to be the only one that actually got up near Miguel. Whereas everyone else (including Jessica) kind of respected/feared him and kept their distance, Peter was having none of that and it really seemed to put Miguel off-balance, like he did not know how to handle Peter. Even Spider-punk kept his distance and at one point ducked down, but Peter literally went up and patted him on the back. Now the end scene with taking Mayday into battle, well that I think was a step too far. Mayday may have powers and be tough or whatever, but she is a baby and they have no idea what is about to go down. I get that Peter feels that he gained the bravery to go and have a child because of Miles, but now is the time to be a good father and leave her with MJ. Oh, and by the way, maybe let MJ know your heading out. You are still working on mending the relationship, a bit of respect would go a long way there.

I think it's supposed to be portrayed as a Joke. Even if you did make the argument that Peter wasn't taking Miguel seriously, he does know the gravity of the situation (the Canon events and all the Spot drama). And besides, isn't Peter already known to be the jokey type and Miguel the serious (but occasionally makes jokes) type anyway? If you look at the various portrayals of peter and miguel in the comics, cartoons, and even videogames, Peter is almost always the one making quips and jokes while Miguel is serious, but does make jokes from time-to-time. And, furthermore, it is possible that Peter is close with Miguel in the movie, that's why he's so casual with him and knows that Miguel can handle his personality anyway.

On of the first what ifs was “what if Spider-Man saved his uncle Ben” and the 90s show has the spidey that did that and became a worse person for it. Fundamentally the Hollywood need to have all alternate universes be connected by one concept or idea is the exact opposite of the point of alternate dimensions. It’s LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES, ANYTHING CAN EXIST BECAUSE ITS EVERY POSSIBILITY. want a universe where life never took root? Bam it’s there Want a universe where Spider-Man called himself geckoboy? He had the antidote to the disease that was killing Aunt May and he let her die so they could synthesize more antidote for the people of New York City. Any Spider-Man would sacrifice a loved one to save everyone else. It might seem odd at first glance but they, I believe, are being manipulated by Spider-Man 2099. I have to agree that (spoilers-----------) I don’t believe the quick change of heart to help miles prevent his father from dying. While I can see how the evidence for messing with a canon event is shaky, being all we know is that Miguel’s universe was destroyed and the Indian Spider-Man’s universe isn’t out of the woods yet- if I personally was shown thousands of other people who are my equivalent experiencing the same loss, I’d feel hopeless. Miles certainly is head strong to see this scenario play out basically indefinitely and still decide he can stop it. Miguel and the other spider people, to me, aren’t wrong by trying to stop Miles. They genuinely believe that stopping this would cause the death of BILLIONS. Which is why I still feel like so many of them suddenly willing to Miles is just a little too convenient for the plot. I personally don’t see how they saw or experienced anything so strongly to make them switch their beliefs to be willing to take this gamble- especially the avatar Spider-Girl who let Miles go in the go home machine. A single positive interaction would make her let him go, when she knows the risks? I’m typing this on my phone, otherwise I’d probably go further in depth with my little issues with the movie. But I really did like this movie, you can totally tell that the people working on it really cared about the animation- which is apparently a rarity these days with how fast these studios want movies out and they cut corners on CGI. Overall like a 7/10 for me personally.

Unfortunately, there is one, maybe a few more idk, scenes that really go against the whole "Cannon Event" thing...either 2099 is lying about it, which wouldn't make any sense for his character cause he isn't a bad guy, he's pretty nasty and brutal but he is ultimately one of the greatest spider-men and is the one who would know the most about multiversal anomalies and multiverses in general. So the scene in Universe India, is very flawed. One, the very event that is supposed to be a cannon one was caused because three interlopers from different universes caused a building to fall. [The three being, Miles, Gwen and The Spot] that instantly means that Cannon Events can occur abruptly due to outside inputs from other universal entities, unless the spider-man part of it cancels out, but that doesn't stop the spot being apart of that issue. Unless the whole growth of that world ending spot in the ground was actually caused by all of them fucking around in another universe, which unfortunately wasn't touched on other than a throw away line from 2099 saying it was their fault, with the blame mainly being thrown at Miles for intervening. 2099 could possibly be withholding information about how these things work as well? Which I feel like could only be something that would be revealed and explained in the next film? Multiverse shit is starting to get on my damn nerves, because you have to set your own damn laws for it and stick to them, you have to be careful with how you do things otherwise you could throw out the very rules you just made up for the thing you created. Or create major plotholes that ruin the story. This second part is starting to worry me, especially when it comes to their handling of complex ideas and the bizzare use of activism hidden away in scenes like something straight out of those brainwashing propaganda films that have subtle but effective messaging that makes you think a certain way. The use of that damn "Rest in Power" thing is absolutely atrocious, I can only assume it was Miles who made it, but given the context of it, that statement is only supposed to be used in a way that respects those that died due to hate crimes and is only ever used with activism in mind.

He's still the same bumbling spider man he's always been, but thanks to his involvement with Miles he's a Peter who is living a great life and who's kinda broken out of the spiderman paradigm, being able to be that husband and father Peter wants to be but he can't because sales always drop in comics when that happens. He's living his best now.

Taking her along into an actual fight however is the hight of irresponsibility and showing up in slippers is plain stupid. I get that they want the kid around for zany moments in part 3, that however could have been accomplished by her webshooting thought the portal, after Peter left her behind, right as it closes. This way she can have funny scenes with Punk-Rock without portraying Peter as a bad father

I personally dislike how he’s protrayed as your stereotype of a bumbling idiot father. Every single time Peter is in a scene he’s either being a doofus dad OR being called incompetent by others. The writers know that Peter is the more compelling character and they are effectively retreading new ground with every non Peter character. So they have to bash him and sideline him to make Miles appear more competent. It’s written well so that’s not so blatant; but it’s there. It just reeks of activism that the sole, white straight white make is derided by others and protrayed like a doofus.

What if the reason for the Peter B. Parker carrying around the baby is that in the 3rd film Miles has to choose between saving his dad or Peter B.? On one hand he can save his father by sacrificing his friend, making Peter's son live without a father from an early age. On the other hand, he sacrifices his father in order to save Peter B. to ensure he is able to raise his child, becoming a true hero. Is that wishing for too much? And it’s not better than the first. There are a some significant issues. Peter B. Parker’s abhorrent mishandling for starters. I think they missed the mark on Peter's characterization in this film. Aside from the whole bringing a baby into battle at the end of the film, which is pretty absurd, everything else feels very surface level in terms of criticism. This a Peter who, in the previous film, suffered from depression and emotional trauma. At the end of the film he is inspired to go back due to Miles' encouragement. In this one, it is clear how much he has achieved in the last year. He recovered his relationship with MJ, had a daughter, and has matured in emotional growth. He has become a proud, relaxed dad. Yes, he isn't as serious as the first film, but that's because he has changed. His experiences have shaped him to be a much happier person. He has a pink bath robe on....I don't understand the problem with that. I don't see how that embarrasses his character. Nor do I see it as assassination. Newsflash, being a parent is fucking hard. Especially when your baby is superhuman. Look at Jack-Jack and how much of a pain it was to raise him. The guy is wearing a bathrobe, he's fucking earned it. He wants to be comfortable. Spider HQ isn't exactly the danger zone, and he has an instant universe device on his wrist, if he feels the situation is dire enough, he'll take it seriously. It's bizarre to me how we can collectively hold that film has treated dad's like shit over the last decade, yet now when we are given a dad who is not only a good dad but a proud one, we call him weak or emasculated. And yes, I know he's wearing the bathrobe at the end of the movie. As if he can't suit up in 5 seconds with the mask and gloves. I can not only guarantee he'll suit up in the next film, but that he'll be badass. Keep your receipts and come back next year.

I mostly agree with your interpretation of Peter's portrayal in this film, I didn't see him as weak or emasculated just relaxed father bathing in his new found Bliss. I fear however that he will still be the same in part 3 whereas he should get serious at this point. While I hope you're correct in your expectations for the next movie his deliberate choice to take the baby along and not to suit up before going, seem like clear signs of what to expect of him in the future. Since they wanted the baby in part 3 they could have simply let it tag along via the webshooters, which Peter forgot to take off while hastily tugging her in, at the last minute. Imo an easy fix. As for why they're critique seemed off to you, I believe it's hard for them to view a movie without contemplating the meta and drawing conclusions on the motivation of the makers. Az viving Peters portrayal solely as an attempt to elevate miles in comparison certainly seems like such a case. But while this approach doesn't seem ideal the problem is that movies do get made with the meta in mind. The directors of this movie stated the want to push back against people who don't view miles as simply another Spider-Man. So what's a poor critic to do?

1:30:00 It's so sad to see. For the entire first ten years of the MCU, regardless of what you think of the quality of the movies, there seemed to be a real camaraderie among the casts, for the most part. Everyone seemed to really get along and seemed like best friends in interviews and acted like heroes in their personal lives for the most part, trying to be inspiring, doing occasional public outreach, visiting kids in costume, being engaging and sincere with fans, talking about how they all had an Avengers group text chat and talked every week or two just to catch up. As far as I can tell, the appearance seems to be that those bonds are still going, some stronger than others, but the heroes of the first ten years seemed to just be generally decent people (setting aside any politics) that enjoyed each other and believed in the brand. And, if they didn't like certain segments of fans, they were very diplomatic in addressing it. I think that may have started cracking with bringing Brie Larson in. I'm not blaming the entirety of what's happened since on her by any means. It's more a statement of how things started changing from the top, down. I can't know how the casts felt about her for sure, but she was immediately controversial to the public. In joint interviews, it may be a false perception, but there often seemed to be some masked animosity between her and some other cast members. Since then, we've gotten a series of people in starring roles that are actively antagonist to segments of the public, we have two villains that seem to possibly be villains in real life, there's nothing I've seen about current casts being besties or having group friend chats or visiting each other for support, we have heroes acting like villains on film that we're told within the film/series are in the right, actors and characters both come across as self-righteous narcissists... it's all just shit. And now, the only (possibly) remaining original Avenger (because Ruffalo seems to be sidelined and was always the least agreeable of the bunch, anyway) is calling out the recent films for being vapid. It's just sad to see. They tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter. They decided to very proudly shit themselves.

I think AZ's criticisms of Miles Morales pretty much comes from 12 years ago when the Ultimate Line of marvel comics was being written. And that really isn't the fault of even this series being based off of previously created marvel characters. On top of that, the ultimate marvel series of comics is from its own self-contained story with variations of characters not exactly the same as the normal universe, and if he would've watched the first movie, i think he wouldn't have had this criticism as much given there's not even normal Doctor Ock (hell she's a woman) or Green Goblin. Separately, Miles Morales ended up getting a lot of popularity among comics fans and even started to make his way into animated series decently often and ended up in places like the normal marvel universe due to multiversal stupidity comics likes to do every once in a while. Which is why he's ended up in the place he is today in this second movie. Overall it's not really a criticism toward even this movie, but basically the decision of some writers over a decade ago who decided to make their own universe with its own story using the names of classic characters (which are a dime a dozen for Marvel and DC), and the fact that the character got popular. I don't think this is even anyone's fault at this point and really can't be brought as a criticism toward anything we have in the modern day cultural crisis.

This from someone who have a hard time with even noticing and remembering sounds and music from movies. But I notice and remember every track from LotR without ever being taken out of it. Just sinks me deeper.

I actually really liked the opening of this movie more than the entirety of the movie itself. Spider Gwen/Ghost Spider is interesting enough within her own universe without all of this dimensional travel guff. It worked for a fun stand alone movie but it's a bit of a reach to make a trilogy out of it. I also find her shipping with Miles extremely forced. What, because they're both spider teens, they both have to have the hots for each other too? Feels hammy. The movie has some great bits but it's also oddly paced, and it's too long. The weird cliffhanger ending left me feeling like I'd been slapped with a wet fish.

The opening bit where it was just Gwen's backstory for a good 20 minutes was probably my favorite part. He reconnecting with her dad was also a highlight. I find the pairing of Miles and Gwen to be forced because they're both spider teens, but also because Gwen was Peter's major love interest and canon event, and now she's just passed onto the next Spider-man, too.

So I just watched this last night and there was a line delivered by Lyla when they were doing the intervention on miles. She says “well… according to the model” So the writers clearly want to display a tension as to whether this is all necessary, and based on how Gwen’s father revoked his position as captain, saving his life WITHOUT her having to step in and save him we are swimming in unknown territory and O’Hara’s dogma is being called into question.

Heels is talking out his ass about Peter B. Parker. Not seeing the first film completely misses the entire point of that version of Peter. He is not the ideal version of Spiderman, he is the broken mentor who could not juggle everything and let it overtake him. The whole first movie is him both teaching Miles and regaining his confidence to become the hero he once was once more. Him marrying MJ and having a kid is a huge part in that development, as it shows he grew as a person and it is thanks to his mentorship of Miles that he was able to do so

But this movie has no self contained story nor completed arcs for its characters. So HeelsvsBabyface reviewing it it's totally fine.🤷🏻‍♂️

1:40:00 I have no idea of this and am just asking the question, but are theaters everywhere back to FULL full occupancy? Granted, 8 people (if not an exaggeration) isn't very many people for a theater, but it's generally a policy to call a theater sold out when there's still about 10% of seats left. Additionally, there was reduced occupancy because of Covid. That's largely faded out, but I wonder if there's still some restrictions across the board or if certain chains still have their own heightened restrictions and call a theater sold out when it's closer to 25% of seats emptey or something like that. just wondering. Personally, the shows I've gone to haven't been very full, but they also aren't said to be sold out. If you look at actual number of seats sold, you'll easily see that the record breakers of today that are forming the top grossers of all time are actually selling about 3/4 the number of tickets that comparable movies did ten years ago. Movie theaters are STILL dying, but slowly. They're just charging a lot more per ticket. just as we're constantly wondering about the secret numbers for streaming, Hollywood doesn't highlight the number of tickets sold. Sure, financially, they care how much money they're making. But culturally and for longevity, the actual number of tickets sold is really more important. Just looking at James Cameron, while Avatar made more and still holds the record for box office, Titanic is still his most successful picture, selling approaching 60 million more tickets (out of 383 million tickets total) than Avatar. But Avatar is sitting at $650 million more than Titanic. Avatar 2 seats sold numbers seem to be harder to nail down, as far as I can find, but I'm seeing estimates that, while it is sitting at $600 million less (about 80% of Avatar's total), it may have sold just over half the number of tickets (final number pending, as I couldn't find a concrete number, though it did see that the opening weekend seats sold was about 60% of Avatar's). To conclude, I'm just wondering if "sold out" officially means less sold out than "sold out" used to mean.

As regards Platoon's complaint about spider-punk's "fighting fascists" line (~35:00): That got an eyebrow raise and a grimace out of me at first, but by the end of the movie I felt spider-punk was quite fittingly an anarchist to the core and from first principles, such that he would label ANY hierarchical institution as fascist. The line seeming to come from his first principles makes it more universal, since an anarchist in any place at any time would throw it at basically any government (or government institution). Looking back it almost feels hackneyed or redundant from his position. I'm inclined to chuckled at it now in the same way as the exchange from The Last of Us TV series: "The government are fascists!" "They are now, but they weren't then!"

it's a bit weird for Heelz to comment on the character of Peter B Parker if he hasn't seen the first film. Sure the bathrobe didn't need to be pink but the dude spends the first film walking around with his stomach hanging out over dirty sweatpants. Dignity wasn't part of his character, except when he was being spiderman. The characters entire arc is the mirror of Miles, who needs to learn to be spiderman, B Parker needed to learn to be Peter Parker again. tbh B Parker should have been a cameo or a Dagobah kinda interlude where he sides with Miles against the others
