Open Bar #67 - Disney Admits Defeat, WGA Strike Ends, Ahsoka Ep7 Review

Ойын-сауық

It seems that billions of dollars in lost revenue and tumbling stock prices were finally enough to convince Bob Iger that getting involved in culture wars is bad for business. Speaking of bad for business, Hollywood has finally saved in to the WGA's demands, but will that make things better or worse? Join me, MauLer, Endymion, Little Platoon and Paul Chato at the bar as we find out.

@@dun0790 It's never been easier for pirates to grab the original encoding off of streaming services. It's never been easier to distribute said original encoding off of streaming services. And it's never been easier to create your own streaming service. And for your limited trouble the experience is better in every respect. Back in the cable TV days, the rips were not always so good, and yet piracy was extremely popular anyway. Piracy became less popular when streaming services got started because the prices were low, the content was great, and overall the services being offered were very convenient. I don't think these big companies want to push the market back into piracy now. They may never be able to win people back. I think the whole industry will go into a full death spiral because the money will quickly run out. Not contrast this situation with music. Music piracy isn't really a thing anymore and probably won't ever be again. Why is that? Because there's a whole bunch of low cost legitimate streaming services, they all have basically the same libraries so they're in direct competition with each other, and users simply choose whichever one has the best user experience, whether that's integration with their preferred devices, or recommendation features, or whatever else companies can come up with as a market differentiator. These TV and movie streaming services need to throw out this exclusivity idea, and they're not going to by choice. The streaming services should really be separated from the production, just like the studios once upon a time were separated from owning movie theaters. That way the studios will have incentive to produce content that's actually good and will be licensed with favorable terms to the distributors. The distributors will have incentive to keep costs down and have the best user experience. And piracy won't really be a thing. But they're not going to do that. Maybe governments will step in and force them to. But either way, if it doesn't happen, a lot of companies are going to go out of business over the next decade, they'll all lose billions in potential profits to piracy, and we aren't going to get much good content anymore.

The best year for movies was 1987. March: Lethal Weapon, Raising Arizona June: The Untouchables, Predator, Spaceballs, Full Metal Jacket July: RoboCop, The Living Daylights August: Can't Buy Me Love, Dirty Dancing September: Hellraiser, Fatal Attraction, The Princess Bride November: The Running Man; Planes, Trains, & Automobiles December: Empire of the Sun, Wall Street, Broadcast News, Moonstruck, Overboard, Good Morning Vietnam (And I deliberately didn't include any sequels, other than the James Bond film which starred a new Bond) There was something for everybody, and a lot of it was brand new, unlike anything else before it. It was made for a largely post-racial America, where casts were diverse and it didn't matter. Pretty much all the exact opposite of modern day woke Hollywood. Movies were fun, there weren't any lectures, you just got good entertainment. There were real movie stars, and they could draw people to the movie theaters.

Conan's podcasts are hilarious also. Even when he rouches on politics and the guests are insufferable loonies, he knows how to be funny, and talk about more than one subject. My favourite late night TV is all British. Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross. And yes, Craig Ferguson is my favourite. He was on American TV, but he was Scottish. Him and his guests barely promote anything, they talk about random stuff and nothing, loads of flirting with the girls and mocking and ribbing on the guys, and he did it all without being rude. And he owned the awkwardness every way it came.

53:02 I kinda agree with Chato here. Diego Luna IS a good actor, I loved him in Narcos: Mexico. However, he's completely bland in Andor. Maybe it was intentional because they wanted to show the path to becoming the superspy but still....And yeah, it was VERY slow, particularly in the beginning. The whole thing about Andor's sister was completely pointless, it was just ignored after a while. 2:18:25 There's no way Ahsoka is better than Mandalorian Season 2. Barely anything HAPPENS in Ahsoka, whereas in Mando Season 2 you had a bunch of very interesting single episodes, not to mention the finale which was quite good.

As a former projectionist, I'm not sure whether to go with 1975 when 5-channel audio debuted in "Tommy" or 1992 when the implementation of Dolby Digital in "Batman Returns" made the 5.1 format a widespread mainstream staple everyone could enjoy. Either way, the ability to place sound behind the audience changed the narrative capabilities of film making forever.

Actually, you SHOULD blame Daisy Ridley for Rey's parentage being changed because she's the reason they changed it. She revealed that her parents were Han and Leia, which made Disney feel like they had to go in a different direction because she spoiled the twist. That's why Abrams basically turned into her handler at PR events, because Disney told him "Make sure she keeps her f*cking mouth shut and doesn't spoil the twists."

Of the others he did though, I think Skyfall is the only one that comes close to great Bond. And Craig's Bond films were not the worst offenders when it comes to using crazy technology - does anyone remember the invisible car? The fantastical elements have been there ever since Roger Moore; remember Moonraker? Also Bond films haven't been set in the Cold War since, well, the Cold War was raging. Having said that, yes, it would be great to go back to that era, one of my favorites was The Spy Who Loved Me.

2:10:15 I don't think it's a Disney edict. It's Filoni playing with his own pet characters. Like he said in that quote about giving people toys to play with. That wasn't about the audience, that was about himself. The whole show is about validating his own creations. The reason life-action Anakin was there was so he was in a scene with life-action Ahsoka. To legitimize his own creations by putting them next to George Lucas' version of the character instead of just the cartoon version, i.e. playing with Lucas' toys as well. The whole show is about Filoni's psychological hang-up about his inability to measure up to George Lucas.

The OT lightsaber duels were more like the samuari duels of feudal japan. Precise, short, and deadly. It was about predicting your opponents attacks and countering them into an attack. The new ones are just for style and 'oh, its so cool' moments. They are just to show off. Also, I think it's explained that Kylo's saber has a cracked kyber crystal and the 'cross guard' is it releasing the extra energy that produces as not to explode the whole handle on ignition. It was essentially a safety feature that he stylized into looking nice. The two sided spinning sabers we see the Inquisition using are sort of stupid looking, but I have a guess as to why they spin. My theory is that it's for a more total protection from heavy blaster fire, like mounted turrets or mini gun style blasters. It allows them to guard and deflect the blasts as a normal saber would at a much higher rate with less chance of getting hit. Plus, we've seen how effective dual blade sabers can be in skilled hands (Maul, Cal, Trillia the Ninth Sister, etc).

As for the concept of Lightsabers being terrifying weapons, it's kinda sad that they aren't more 'realistically' portrayed in the setting, because now that would be truly terrifying. Just a touch from them would like spontaneously boil your blood in that region with 'explosive' results. I mean, you'd need more substantial shielding for the weapon via some sort of crossguard, but still.
