Open Bar #67 - Disney Admits Defeat, WGA Strike Ends, Ahsoka Ep7 Review
Ойын-сауық
It seems that billions of dollars in lost revenue and tumbling stock prices were finally enough to convince Bob Iger that getting involved in culture wars is bad for business. Speaking of bad for business, Hollywood has finally saved in to the WGA's demands, but will that make things better or worse? Join me, MauLer, Endymion, Little Platoon and Paul Chato at the bar as we find out.

@@dun0790 It's never been easier for pirates to grab the original encoding off of streaming services. It's never been easier to distribute said original encoding off of streaming services. And it's never been easier to create your own streaming service. And for your limited trouble the experience is better in every respect. Back in the cable TV days, the rips were not always so good, and yet piracy was extremely popular anyway. Piracy became less popular when streaming services got started because the prices were low, the content was great, and overall the services being offered were very convenient. I don't think these big companies want to push the market back into piracy now. They may never be able to win people back. I think the whole industry will go into a full death spiral because the money will quickly run out. Not contrast this situation with music. Music piracy isn't really a thing anymore and probably won't ever be again. Why is that? Because there's a whole bunch of low cost legitimate streaming services, they all have basically the same libraries so they're in direct competition with each other, and users simply choose whichever one has the best user experience, whether that's integration with their preferred devices, or recommendation features, or whatever else companies can come up with as a market differentiator. These TV and movie streaming services need to throw out this exclusivity idea, and they're not going to by choice. The streaming services should really be separated from the production, just like the studios once upon a time were separated from owning movie theaters. That way the studios will have incentive to produce content that's actually good and will be licensed with favorable terms to the distributors. The distributors will have incentive to keep costs down and have the best user experience. And piracy won't really be a thing. But they're not going to do that. Maybe governments will step in and force them to. But either way, if it doesn't happen, a lot of companies are going to go out of business over the next decade, they'll all lose billions in potential profits to piracy, and we aren't going to get much good content anymore.

I see it like I see Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight: A great performance in a terrible movie.
I miss not only the violence, but also the sleeze in Star Wars. The shady bar full of violence and criminals, the attraction between Leia and Han, Jabba's lair and so on. All gone now.
The best year for movies was 1987. March: Lethal Weapon, Raising Arizona June: The Untouchables, Predator, Spaceballs, Full Metal Jacket July: RoboCop, The Living Daylights August: Can't Buy Me Love, Dirty Dancing September: Hellraiser, Fatal Attraction, The Princess Bride November: The Running Man; Planes, Trains, & Automobiles December: Empire of the Sun, Wall Street, Broadcast News, Moonstruck, Overboard, Good Morning Vietnam (And I deliberately didn't include any sequels, other than the James Bond film which starred a new Bond) There was something for everybody, and a lot of it was brand new, unlike anything else before it. It was made for a largely post-racial America, where casts were diverse and it didn't matter. Pretty much all the exact opposite of modern day woke Hollywood. Movies were fun, there weren't any lectures, you just got good entertainment. There were real movie stars, and they could draw people to the movie theaters.

Conan's podcasts are hilarious also. Even when he rouches on politics and the guests are insufferable loonies, he knows how to be funny, and talk about more than one subject. My favourite late night TV is all British. Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross. And yes, Craig Ferguson is my favourite. He was on American TV, but he was Scottish. Him and his guests barely promote anything, they talk about random stuff and nothing, loads of flirting with the girls and mocking and ribbing on the guys, and he did it all without being rude. I was maybe five years old, but mum and dad let me stay up late to watch it. It was fantastic, and it left a lasting impression. That's what Star Wars was - it was simply amazing. 53:02 I kinda agree with Chato here. Diego Luna IS a good actor, I loved him in Narcos: Mexico. However, he's completely bland in Andor. Maybe it was intentional because they wanted to show the path to becoming the superspy but still....And yeah, it was VERY slow, particularly in the beginning. The whole thing about Andor's sister was completely pointless, it was just ignored after a while. 2:18:25 There's no way Ahsoka is better than Mandalorian Season 2. 2:10:15 I don't think it's a Disney edict. It's Filoni playing with his own pet characters. Like he said in that quote about giving people toys to play with. That wasn't about the audience, that was about himself. The whole show is about validating his own creations. The reason life-action Anakin was there was so he was in a scene with life-action Ahsoka. To legitimize his own creations by putting them next to George Lucas' version of the character instead of just the cartoon version, i.e. playing with Lucas' toys as well. The whole show is about Filoni's psychological hang-up about his inability to measure up to George Lucas.

The OT lightsaber duels were more like the samuari duels of feudal japan. Precise, short, and deadly. It was about predicting your opponents attacks and countering them into an attack. The new ones are just for style and 'oh, its so cool' moments. They are just to show off. Also, I think it's explained that Kylo's saber has a cracked kyber crystal and the 'cross guard' is it releasing the extra energy that produces as not to explode the whole handle on ignition. It was essentially a safety feature that he stylized into looking nice. The two sided spinning sabers we see the Inquisition using are sort of stupid looking, but I have a guess as to why they spin. My theory is that it's for a more total protection from heavy blaster fire, like mounted turrets or mini gun style blasters. It allows them to guard and deflect the blasts as a normal saber would at a much higher rate with less chance of getting hit. Plus, we've seen how effective dual blade sabers can be in skilled hands (Maul, Cal, Trillia the Ninth Sister, etc).

Just like in Rick and Morty where Rick essentially says one episode that the access to infinite universes precludes the need for emotional attachments because he has infinite daughters through the infinite multiverse. So goes our feelings for the protagonist in the shows because as you said nothing matters. They can all come back.
About the Space-whales 'rotting' in space around that planet. When Ahsoka and Huyang were hiding out you could see smaller creatures swarming around the bones. I would guess that they don't so much rot as they get eaten by those critters until there's nothing but bones. But here's where I get angry at that thought. It makes sense and it completely sucks that **I** have to come up with that myself.
Sir Rosis of Liver is the best alcoholic name ever
Endymion talks a whole lot but doesn't end up saying much of anything and is certainly not well spoken. Once I heard his hot take that Andor was boring and sucked I had heard enough of this guy. New intro is awesome.
The A.I. bit & the talk about using an actors face for whatever, reminded me of a movie called Looker w/Susan Dey, James Coburn and others about a similar thing. Good film.
1982 is the best year for movies E.T. & The Thing amongst many many others, it’s amazing how many classics came out that year.
Modern SW is like the conceptual incarnation of the scene in Spaceballs where Yogurt gives his raison d'être: "Merchandizing!"

"The kids LOVE this one!" lmao
Thanks for the Prisoners of Gravity recoemmendation - right up my street. :-)
Every time I watch this intro I just think what an awesome theme song! And I love the new animation behind it!
God bless the edit with Az's face with the falling old man
Love the intro have a great show everybody!
I haven't even watched Andor but hearing Endymion say that he stopped watching it because his GF hated it and wanted to swap to Ashoka/Mandalorian because it has cute things in it has withered my soul in an instant. It's made me go full doomer for a few minutes, like "what's the point of us asking for better media when brainlets will just consume whatever's been regurgitated by giant corporations as long as it has glitters on it?".
As for the concept of Lightsabers being terrifying weapons, it's kinda sad that they aren't more 'realistically' portrayed in the setting, because now that would be truly terrifying. Just a touch from them would like spontaneously boil your blood in that region with 'explosive' results. I mean, you'd need more substantial shielding for the weapon via some sort of crossguard, but still.

Don't think they can change much when they are reliant on the likes of blackrock etc for funding, eventually the esg scores will do its job and they will be forced to sell off loads and picked up cheap by the very ppl that implemented esg scores in the 1st place.
Obviously what they'll do is create a James Bond Multiverse, bring all the old Bonds back with AI, and have them team up to take down every Bond villain there ever was throughout the multiverse with a time machine.
@1;26:41 "Ass shots and leather." Well, those get censored in ME: Legendary edition. Why? Because Bioware went woke a long time ago.
Best year for movies was 1982, the year i was born: - 48 Hours - Airplane II - Annie - An Officer and a Gentleman - Blade Runner - Conan the Barbarian - E.T. - Evil under the sun - Fast times at Ridgemont High - First Blood - Gandhi - Poltergeist - Rocky III - Sophie's Choice - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn - The Thing - Tootsie - Tron
never mind the plushie, how much do I have to pay to have Az as my personal dancing flunkie?!
OMG Critical drinker and Endymion on the same podcase, love it!!!!!
What Iger meant is the Culture Wars will continue uninterrupted just in secret
Aw...the pup is a free sleeper! 😅
The creator might be good, but I can never get behind treating A.I. like humans. I’d have put a bullet between that kid robots eyes in the first 2 min…movie over

Yes and they do not explain it very good. Visuals give you full chills though, I cried in one moment
Into is FIRE!! 😂😂
Thank goodness we suffered no "Galacticus" vs "Galactus" after Fantastic Four comments, lmao!
Love the new intro, looks awesome!
1982 and 1999 were awesome years along with 1977 for movies
New intro is cool!
She really will set that poncho on fire at some point. Not exactly lightsaber friend garb.
I noticed years ago that if you hear a voice for a while that you imagine a mental image of a face to go with that voice. Almost always when I finally see that person's face it doesn't match my mental image and kind of discombobulates me for a while. So Mailer and Little Platoon, don't disappoint me.

Mauler will never show his face. I think mainly cause he probably wants his family and himself some anonymity and peace.

Just google MauLer's face. He used to show it on Twitch around 7-8 years back.

@@dustydesertdisciple6290his face is already out there. Its a pretty old video, like probably over a decade now, but theres a twitch stream compilation or something that he's in (i actually think he made it, but im not sure) and he used a facecam in it. Could probably find a crappy screengrab on google or something too
The irony of Chato mentioning “anime Einstein” is amazing considering One Piece itself will soon animate their Einstein.
New intro was sweet. ;) The writers were on strike? You mean creatively right?
I remember when Disney+ would show movies that were still in theaters, but they’d charge like $30 more to watch them. No wonder Scarlett sued them for the Black Widow receipts. And speaking of Arrested Development, the Russos put the staircar from the show in the background of the airport battle of Civil War.
They bungled Halo the tv series which should have been a massive success I don’t see Fallout or Mass Effect going any differently. They should succeed but Amazon Studios will do everything they can to spoil it with equity, diversity, and inclusion instead of building on a successful franchise that doesn’t involve any of these woke ideas that are ruining entertainment.

I agree, which is a shame because the Fallout should be HUGE.

Microsoft handling of the ip post bungie has been shameful, the last few game and tv series have pretty much ruined the franchise. Hopefully they learn their lesson otherwise fans of other stuff they are gobbling up right now will suffer later.

Mass-Effect already has lesbians, so I guarantee studios are going to leap directly on that landmine face-first.
I would actually watch that Bond. Weird.
