3:11 Star Trek technological advancement comment from Mauler - they did it beautifully in DS9. The Dominion initially had weapons that ignored shields. A couple of years later the Dominion was surprised when the shields started being effective. One remarked "Never underestimate the skill of Star Fleet engineers"

I disagree with Mauler. Maul lost that fight, full stop. If you underestimate your opponent, if they catch you with a tricky maneuver - you lose. Doesn't matter how - if you get chopped in half, you've lost.

Good writing and characters, accurate psychology lore that's solid life advice, and zero politics anywhere in the movie; mostly female cast but given the context of where the girl is schooling that makes a lot of sense and is carried across in a non-cringe, realistic manner.

Talking about good and bad directing: I think good directing is harder to spot because if it's good you're just in the movie, not analysing it. Bad directing is much easier because it pulls you out of the movie, usually by being too slow, not keeping the action/drama moving. Longueurs is usually the word applied to this kind of thing; scenes feel draggy and have you squirming in your seat wondering if you wouldn't rather be out weeding the garden or doing the vacuuming. Even people who know nothing about directing can spot bad directing even if they don't know what it is they've spotted.

Maybe not bad directing, but a good movie that's under-directed is Gran Torino; love the movie, but you can really tell that they only did 2 takes for each scene, especially for some of the younger actors.

Heh. The Panel (During the Open Bar): "Who could even direct a good Star Wars movie at this point?" Me: ( 10:40 ) Michael Bay~ The great thing about Michael Bay that stuck with me about the early Transformers movies was that he didn't see any problem in making a movie to appeal to teenage boys, and that seems like exactly the kind of demographic focus that Star Wars needs. A big problem of the mythical and elusive "Modern" Audience is that they're very mercurial with their desires (various Flavor of the Month fads and trends) and capricious with their attention. I'm willing to hang my hat on the idea that starting/continuing a franchise (like Rebel Moon) is hard because it requires discipline and the desire to turn things down, rather than appealing to "Everyone." It sucks, because no one likes being told "no", but if Star Wars wants to survive, they need to be okay with going to the source and appealing to young men. All that matters is if the product is *good*. If the Audience it's aimed at is hyped, then that energy and enthusiasm will spread out.

We launched water balloons from a massive field-goal-sized slingshot… AT kids that took hits for extra credit. We played chicken by seeing who could endure the strongest electric shocks (ensuring the current didn’t pads through the heart of course.) We built cardboard boats to have a massive survival battle in a pool. And even the homework was awesome cuz the problems involved armadillos skidding across ice or getting shot from cannons into orbit. Good times.

@@PrivateCitizen84 honestly the games always made it feel cheap to me; the force should be focus-based not a magic bar. Like if a Jedi is really _in the zone_ and took out 20 guys, it should be like fighting a guy on a kickass kill-streak on a 30x damage combo.

  • @PrivateCitizen84

@@samwallaceart288 I should of made my point clearer. If focus all it's takes then a Jedi/Sith Master would have almost unlimited power and next to no cool down. The force lightning really messed up Sidius the longer he used it. So taxing over use of force has a draining even damaging effect even in the Lucas movies. They even used it to kill Luke in the bad Disney stuff. I think the precedent is set three times Sidus RoTS/Yoda Empire/Luke TLJ that the continued use of force is draining, damaging and even fatal.

I was actually saying that if I got to do a Star Wars set after ep 6, I'd introduce two advancements: 1 synthetic beskar - it's duller in color, more like gunmetal than silver, and it can deflect most blaster fire. In order to penetrate the armor you need a shot from a heavier blaster, or sustained fire from a normal one. 2 - commonly available melee weapons that mimic some of the properties of lightsabers, and can defeat the synthetic beskar with relative ease. Now major battles have a lot more melee combat between fully armored troops. It would look awesome, and there would be a reason for it.

Looks like my 10$ super chat was either missed or youtube bonked it. I sent it right before Open Bar started too. Anyways I mentioned that in episode 12 of season 5 on Stargate SG-1 (Wormhole X-Treme) The SG-1 crew infiltrated the television set of the show Wormhole X-Treme. Jack acting as a military consultant for the show overheard the producer and network executive arguing about this big budgeted action scene where the shows Doctor would have to go anti-gravity to bypass some guards and the network exec wasn't approving it. Jack speaks up and says "Why doesn't he (The doctor character) just shoot them?". This moment in the show has always been my go to scene to explain why Disney writing and plots don't work. "Why doesn't X just shoot Y?" Or why doesn't X do the smart obvious choice instead of the over budgeted stupid scene.

I have a hard time thinking of something that was brilliantly directed, and wasn’t, at least, competently written? Usually, if the director has any talent, they are in charge of “telling the story” & either through addition by subtraction or just visual storytelling, will make the story make sense. Also, Directors typically read the script before agreeing to direct a film, so they know what they’re working with. If there’s an issue a good Director is upset with, it typically has to do with Studio interference during the making or with the edit. Directors who feel interfered with have the option to use the “Directed by Alan Smithee” moniker, so their name won’t be attached. You also have the opposite, Tarantino notoriously had his “Written by” credit changed to a “Story by” credit on Natural Born Killers, because he felt the movie Oliver Stone made wasn’t the script he had written. I think EARLY Kevin Smith films are a good example of great writing with minimal directing(as far as camera movements, cinematography, etc.) and the films are loved because the writing & the story are good & Kevin Smith’s primary directing focus was on performance, working with the Actors to deliver the lines properly.

In a S2 ep of TNG, they end up grabbing some hairs from a hairbrush and using that in the transporter buffer to make a person young again. That is the Fountain of Youth and Health, right there! Pull out a bunch of hairs when you're 21 and still healthy. If you ever are poisoned, or get a fatal disease, or simply grow old, just beam yourself into your young DNA, and you're all better! Nope! You're probably talking about Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast game where Cortosis was introduced first, then it appeared in KOTOR

That's going to be very difficult to say broadly, Freeze varies a lot between continuities. At his best written and most sympathetic incarnation I'd be tempted to say Freeze, but he can also be a goofy villain whose not very sympathetic at all.

35:00 I'm kinda wondering if she wanted the girl to live and got what she wanted, because she assumes a woman won't grow up to become a monster, or something like that

NO NO NO NO NO MUELLER YOU ARE WRONG! The Darth maul book that follows his journey from coruscant to tatooine to naboo says that he was attacked by a bunch of pirates and his leg was injured. Sidious then goes on to explain at the end of the book that he never would have let Darth maul go against both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had he known he was injured If he was not injured he would have wiped the floor with both of them at once.

Seoul is pronounced `Sol` in Korean (well it is pronounced a bit different but non-Koreans `butcher` it trying to pronounce it correctly). We all know it but it is still cringe as hell and apparently completely ignored whenever `casual racism` by the fans is mentioned.

They remastered Mass Effect but took out all the female sexy body bits.... The orginals are probably one of the best storylines in gaming.

Color me crazy, but "Snarky Jay" is Nina Infinity 2.0: younger, hotter, yet still just repeating what she thinks guys wanna hear. (and have also already said, but better and more eloquently than her)

Review Tarkovskys Stalker film, 1979. If drinker doesn't like it I'll stop calling it a cinematographic masterpiece. If people have no clue what I'm referrering to, least read about it. It's a movie you don't just "pop on for entertainment", it's more of an art house film.
