As much as i enjoyed the Daniel Craig bond run, I think an argument can be made that the last few Mission impossible movies have been more Bond like than the Daniel Craig films as of late. Even down to the fun factor and use of gadgets. The last few M.I films clearly had a certain discipline in when and how to implement them and it worked well with the narrative and how they functioned in terms of the gadgets. Minus the bond girls and suave factor. I think M.I 4 - 6 covers a good deal of the usual Bond film checkmarks.

Totally agree about films written by children, made for children. And the devolution of masculinity. All of these stories encourage anti heroes, lack of responsibility or accountability and ridicule real and true protagonists. It's all so disposable. As it relates to Bond, if all they want to do is deconstruct the character further, Cavill won't be the next Bond and that's a shame. Because I thinks it's time Bond went back to form. Cavill in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a throwback Bond for me and he could do some amazing action too.

I'm pretty sure the nanobot thing in No Time To Die was originally supposed to be a programmable virus, but they didn't dare to run with that idea because of the pandemic. I mean: the entire island facility with breeding pools of sorts? That's definitely not how you create nanobots, but it could be a way to cultivate a virus. I think the nanobot thing is a result of reshoots and they didn't bother fixing every little thing that didn't work anymore, they just fixed the big things.

As to Mauler's thinking about 'fan appreciation, but not using it wrong', the sequence in Mario Odyssey where Pauline puts on the celebration is a strong contender, to me. It works really well for celebrating the series, and it deserves its place in the game specifically because it is a celebration of the series, and it put Pauline into the game to foreshadow the setting of the celebration. It's fairly clear the work was put into the sequence to actually make it a fantastic payoff.

Craig is a really overrated Bond. He’s great in Casino Royale, however since Skyfall, he’s been phoning it in. The man seemed half asleep in most of his scenes in Skyfall, Spectre and NTTD. Also speaking of Skyfall…😩 This movie might have one of the worst action movie protagonists in modern film. He literally fails at almost all of his tasks. He fails his mission in the beginning, he fails at saving M. He can’t even pass his training tests and yet he gets sent on a super dangerous high stakes mission…What the Actual Frick movie? And this results in one of the most mean spirited deaths in any movie. The death of Severine. And Craig’s Bond shows next to no remorse for his failures. Skyfall is an exceptionally overrated film. The plot is messy, as mentioned (the main character sucks),the main theme “the old ways are better” is run over by its own by its own script and ineffective protagonists. And Severine’s death scene is really mean spirited. Imagine if that was Brosnan, Connary or Dalton. Better yet look at Ethan Hunt in the later Mission Impossible films. He’s an action hero. If he promised to save someone like Severine, he would of stopped at nothing to ensure it. And if he couldn’t it would haunt him. Additionally, the other Bond Actors and Tom Cruise actually gave a shit about the characters they portray. Craig seemed so fricking board from Skyfall onwards.

one thing i've seen from different comment sections on youtube, is whichever youtuber voices an opinion, the subscribers are likely to have the same. if drinker said he liked skyfall, his audience would have shared the same thoughts. my takeaway is this: skyfall's ratings change depending on who agrees with who. you look at the left, and it goes full circle; just that it's oppositism. i think skyfall is an objectively good film, and that drinker's opinions on modern films is skewed not just because of their writings, but also because he prefers 20th century movies.

Casino Royale and Skyfall. And that's it. Avoid the rest. Casino Royale was directed by Martin Campbell. The guy who directed Goldeneye. Casino Royale came out a year after Batman Begins. Hence the serious gritty tone. If you don't think that means anything to Bond, remember, Die Another Day came out after XXX with Vin Diesel. Hence all the crappy extreme sports action scenes on terrible greenscreen. Even James Bond movies are a slave to trends. Casino Royale is great. Watch Skyfall for some great cinematography, a great musical score and some great action.

About NTTD: “The big-budget tentpole has been embraced by critics and earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences in North America, the same as the last Bond film, 2015’s Spectre.” This is all I need to know, Spectre was a bad entry. The first opening scene is epic, the rest of the movie is dragging Bond behind his DB7 for two hrs

That's when they figuratively and literally broke James' balls. Where's the Robbie Coltrane or Joe Don Baker in these sour and dour films? Whatever happened to Mary Goodnight and Plenty O'Toole? If I want moody bond I'll read the novels. I watch the movies for camp

1:29:36 I suggest anyone who is curious about this "Gender-swapping," of Pinhead to go and watch the Midnight's Edge video regarding this very thing before you say something on Social Media about it that you'll regret. The basics: Pinhead was supposedly androgynous in the book that the film series is based on, more female-like than male. When you see who has been cast, it makes so much sense and for once, seems like an appropriate bit of casting. It may be the one and only time where this sort of thing is okay. For me, it is, anyway.

  • @Errtuabyss

Except that the 'Pinhead' in the Novella was just as androgynous as the rest of them (other than the light voice, which btw was shifted into the movies female Cenobite version) is called 'it' the whole time and at this point wasn't the lead Cenobite, one could say it was a different character altogether. That changed for the movie version with the casting of Doug Bradley and the fact that 2 of the costumes made it very hard to speak at all, changing all the dialoge to just two of them. The first Cenobite to speak and with probably the most dialog is actually what we commonly know as 'the Chatterer'. The Pinhead/Hellpriest we know only came about with the movie version and stayed the same in every other adaptation since, for example the comics, the only other thing besides the first movie Clive Barker was involved with. The character changed from one of the least important ones to the focus of the whole franchise. The only distingctively female Cenobite is the fourth in the first meeting (btw the same order they appear in the movie when Kirsty opens the box) which is described almost exclusively through the sex-specific features and therefor the opposite of all other Cenobites. Her whole point is to be defined by her sexuality, in contrast to the rest of them, and represents how that what Frank seeked became perverted to something that strikes disgust and horror into him. How Midnight's Edge took that as a proof that all other Cenobites are female is a mystery to me.. The most important point for me is, in Midnight's Edges words: "what is the point of this alternate telling?" Clive Barker was already involved in the original movie and it is pretty close to the novella for the most part. The biggest deviations where with the Cenobites, specifically 'Pinhead' and the female Cenobite. So I guess I get that part. But what is the point of being closer to the origial versions of characters that take barely any screentime when the rest of the story is already very close to the novella so you have to write a new script to put them in? I doubt we get the disturbing scene with the female Cenobite (if nothing else than for explicite full frontal nudity making a hulu release impossible), the two other Cenobites being already pretty close to the original and being closer to the original 'Pinhead' would also mean putting the character in the background.. lets not kid ourselfs, this is in fact just another progressive remake of a popular franchise to milk nostalgia and media buzz. I doubt there will be more than some token points, just to create a bit of drama and the movie will be overall nothing special, with better effects but in every other regard probably worse than the original movie.. Anything else would be a big surprise and breaking the trend of the last decade.
