Braking typically can produce 2-3x as much g-force as accelerating... Usually the faster the car is- the better the brakes the car comes equipped with, so this rule applies to pretty much all cars.. Even F1 cars produce 2-2.5G's under acceleration in 2nd and 3rd but the braking can be up and well over 7G's.. If G's triggered the onstar calls it more than definitely was caused while under braking...

Yeah it seems like a certain Gforce is what causes onstar to come on, rather than a sudden jolt of gforces. As for the blinkers, once the car thinks it’s been in a crash, blinks come on automatically. Most modern cars do that now.

I hope Onstar came on after that Chevy executive wrecked that Corvette pace car at the Detroit IndyCar race hahaha

GM needs to make OnStar optional. Not the subscription but the actual transceiver hardware inside the car. I removed mine, so my Camaro is completely off the grid. Only thing that is different is my compass in my inftotainment screen doesn’t show.

@ihategooglespooks if you disabled a feature to help find and return your stolen car then there is a good chance when your car gets stolen, if you report it, your insurance will be able to deny coverage at the minimum and at the worst try and pin insurance fraud on you. maybe its time to plug the ol' onstar module back in lol

Very true. When GM was asked to explain their air bag deployments they said is was designed that way!

What's with gm cars falsely thinking they have crashed when they are simply being used for exactly what they were designed for? This zr1 calls OnStar during a hotlap, the Camaro zl1 has airbags that pop in the middle of a hotlap, and the Colorado zr2 pops its airbags while offroading. This is a recurring issue with Chevy, and it really needs to be fixed.

@@robakers5426 I know at least in the case of the Colorados it has happened to plenty of people. I'm not sure about the other 2, but I've never heard of this issue from other manufacturers. This is just speculation, but I bet that if you constantly push either if those vehicles to the limit very often it will likely happen sooner or later on other ones. These are also the only cases like this I have ever heard, and I find it a little odd they are all gm vehicles. I think it's fair to say gm has a bit of an issue, however small or uncommon it may be.

After a 5 minute search any can manufacture I could come up there were air bag issues, Toyota had a recall for airbags deploying at weird times. One couple had a Honda odyssey that had their airbags deploy on them twice without warning www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4414865 When you make millions of cars a year that are built by man or robot issues will arise once in a while. 415,000 vw were recalled because of airbag issue. Rapid acceleration and quick deceleration tells the module in the car an accident might occur get the airbags and seat belt pretensions ready, and when an impact sensor is tripped the airbags deploy. It’s more complicated then airbags were 30 years ago

I’m sure it can be disabled. I would also imagine that was the last thing he would have thought about in track prep.

I know cars are packed full of safety features today and are hands down saving more and more lives. But for me personally, if I’m buying a 120k+ stock performance car and have done nothing to alter it, I do not expect the car to put my life in danger by suddenly calling on star during a lap. These cars are supposed to be built for the track, ready to handle the G’s, and be pushed to the limit. I love these safety features for your average car, but for a car of this level, I’d expect Chevy to up the limits, but it seems like this car is even more capable than Chevy’s safety team thought. Hopefully they have a setting to manually disable it.

A typical hard braking corner is 1.5g on the Vette. A typical crash is 20+g's. I'm not sure how could the car not know if it's still running fine or that it's crashed and stationary.

Dont think it's a bad sensor. I think they programmed the thresholds too low. A crash will cause an abrupt rise in Gs, so it should be set to such levels. They should be able to determine the appropriate threshold from crash testing. So yeah. Blame the programmers.

I actually have had this happen to me. Years ago at Seattle international/pacific raceways in a driving schools Chevy Cobalt SS. Got the thing to the wood going down the straightaway, I think I bumped the Onstar button. It was like the voice of God talking, asking if I had an emergency. I was kinda busy, so it was like “no...kinda...busy...right...now”. And hung up. As I remember eventually they figured out how to disable it.

That would be distracting.

I have hung out with Andy Pilgrim, he is a stand-up guy.

When they lapped the AMG GT 63s, a over 2.1ton car, they achieved an astonishing laptime of 7:25. At „Pflanzgarten“ the car was flying for a split secing, was mid air and the emergency system immediately called. Pretty nice when it works so good in a Mercedes. Everything is thought of million times. And here 😂😅 the guy has 4 wheels on track and the system calls all the time lol. What a big difference between engineering and quality

I may have a possible explanation. Once I was driving a very top heavy Chevy Equinox and during a turn a wheel came slightly off the ground and it activated OnStar as if we were in an accident. So maybe when you hit a bump or something you pop up and activate OnStar

That's a 1019 Corvette? Wow, holds up great after 1000 years.

This will become a challenge for ZR1 owners to see if they activate collision signal to onstar. Good advertising for Brembo CCBs and Sport Cup 2s also. Said it only happened at this track. Looks like it first came on as he was pulling 1.28 negative g on the binders into T1 and came at 1.4 lateral in turns. Telemetry showed me pulling 1.62 lateral g in T11 at AMP in my C7 Z51 and Pilgrim has a video of him carrying 5mph more corner speed and deeper on the binders in a Grand Sport thru that same turn. Even carrying 5mph more corner speed Pilgrims ability to balance the chassis thru that turn may not yield a much higher g load but still no Onstar notification. NCM was used a lot when developing the car since its basically GMs track. Maybe a little software trickery or something to have it send onstar signal???? and then you have ad that has 122k views as of today. Cheap advertising likely to be seen by the cars target demographic thru search engines. Good on you GM, smart marketing. I'm going to turn on the hazard lights next time I'm on track to see if it makes a difference.
