Pro Racer's Take: 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and 2020 GT350R

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yes, Ford recently launched its all-new Mustang Shelby GT500, but its Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R models are still on our list of favorite performance cars now on the market. We like them so much, in fact, that we named them 2016 Automobile All-Stars. And since then, Ford has made them even better to drive. Find out how they compare right here.

I'd have a GT 350R along side the GT3 for turning laps to experience the best of both worlds(American Muscle vs German Sports Car). Another FANTASTIC review and some really AMAZING driving. If given a choice between the GT500 and the GT350 for me it will always be that GT350. That engine combined with that manual shifter is where the sweet spot is. Until I am uber-rich and can have a car just as a toy, back seats, and usable trunk space matter so I really appreciate showing us that. Not too many people do which is why my money would go to the GT350 over the GT350R. Excellent job at explaining the difference between the two. The ONLY thing that saddens me about these cars is that this is the last year Ford will offer them :( If you want one get one now before the price skyrockets in the aftermarket.

I just discovered this series and it is awesome, surprised it is not more popular. Great job keep it up! I am sure once more folks discover them they will become more popular. I am curious if you swapped the tires how much of a difference would their be? Those carbon wheels are very cool but seem a bit impractical for daily driving, one good pot hole or curbing would be heart breathtakingly expensive. Could you find a lower cost option that could get close to that performance?

I also wanted the usability of a rear seat if need be and I have the heated and cooled front seats which in my opinion are a must as I don't track the car. They actually still have plenty of support and are unusually comfortable. The only thing that I like about the R is the slightly wider wheels and tires along with the lighter wheels on the R but I will never actually get the car to the limit where I would notice anyway. Overall I couldn't be happier with my standard 350. It's such a magical car to drive.

Would be nice to hear an opinion on how much of the 2+/- second difference was generated by the simple (much) better track tire and wider rubber on the 350R. Should have shod the GT350 with like tires for a better "apples to apples" comparison! I imagine tires alone might gain back a second+/-... And a really big question... Is there any steering feel and/or feedback in these cars? I have a BMW M2 Competition (I'm a track rat) and I'll NEVER love the car because it's steering, though precise and accurate, is absolutely NUMB to what's going on between the front tires and the pavement. A crying shame. Porsche found "feel" in every step of the way over 10 years of electronic steering development and BMW doesn't even try!

@@DKLabs99 I would agree with David here Joel. The suspension and transmission are HUGE upgrades but I think the major thing we're not mentioning is that Flat Plane Crank Voodoo. It's hand built and a totally different animal that rivals exotics...at 12-15 built per day it's not a mass produced engine like the coyote. The other thing is all the engine systems and peripherals like the cooling systems and exhaust system (from the manifold to the tips) are different. Even the Body is completely different from the A Pillar forward not to mention the four piece brake discs. While many of those are for track applications...again it's a totally different animal. You cant really compare them but that said....The Bullit is a fun car to drive...I've driven both and own the Shelby...the only bad thing I can say about the Shelby is that it can be frustrating around the city because you can barely use it...No matter what gear you're in...if you rev it to that sky high red line... you're breaking the law.

I test drove a 2017 GT 350 and it was fun and I loved the sound of engine and exhaust note. Plus the styling is great. I’m holding off and getting more time with my Bullitt for now. ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO, FORD CHOPPED OFF 750 POUNDS FROM THE F-150. ...... JUST IMAGINE IF FORD WAS SMART AND BUILT BOTH CARS WITH ALUMINUM EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL PARTS AND LOSE 400 POUNDS OF WEIGHT.

For the price of the under horse powered R you might as well put a little more with it and get the 2020 GT500!

Just wanna throw this out here, the 526hp isn’t at 8250, it’s made at 7500rpm, the last 700ish rpm are just for noise and the experience.

@Steven Losey ...this is not quite correct. Yes, peak power is at 7,500 RPM but no it's not just for noise and the fun factor...you have to consider the average horsepower created over time with respect to the gear. E.g. If I shift right at peak HP let's say in 3rd gear, for 4th gear I will be dragging the gear from let's say 6,000 RPM to 7,500 RPM and then shift again according to your comment. If I shift at 8,000 RPM and maybe only drop to 6,500 RPM...my average horsepower overtime may be higher...and with this Flat plane crank beast...probably is. I guess you'd have to see a Horsepower curve to know exactly. I would guess going to 8,250 rpm would be a bit excessive on every shift but in think around 8K would be the sweet spot. If it were a cross plane crank... you'd probably be spot on (of course they dont rev that high) but these engines make very useable power even after peak HP.

The torque and power are SO much less than the ZL1. The car was killed by the Camaro. They are obsolete and weak. Only thing the GT350 does better is sound. This is 100 % objective

@snooop Dizzzle the 6th gen Camaro has a better performing chassis compared to any Mustang or Shelby. Ford needs the Track cup tires to be able to compete with the Camaro on just street tires. Check their reviews.

Exactly why I gave up on M cars. And that coming from 100% Bimer guy. I drove 19' M2 Competition and felt that steering is numb and artificial. Then went to drive 19' GT350. My decision which car to buy was easy and the rest is the history... I 'would never come back to M cars unless they start making similar to E92.
