People dont understand depression and mental illness. We can throw a hat on and put on a smiling face but be dying on the inside. May God bless her and and all those that are suffering in silence.

Yes, I just touched on that. My heart is so heavy my neighbors are good friends. We met through my youngest daughter and my neighbors granddaughter. Thursday morning my daughter went on Facebook and found out her my neighbors grandson ( brother of the lil girl friends with my daughter) Took his own life, he was in 12th grade. I was sure it was him, but i had and text from neighbor to call. I ran over and I just held my friend, im sorry to get heavy. Put u appear to understand depression and it is a muthafu****

Bless you. I had my first major depressive episode the summer between 7th-8th grade. I sat in the dark the entire summer and every part of me suffered. The judgement I felt going to the shop to get it detangled was painful for anyone, let alone a kid. I have severe depression and have times still where I have to spend a few hours detangling and just putting myself back together. It’s painful, and so many times I see women saying “just suck it up” or “the last thing I’d let go is my hygiene”. No one knows until they go thru it and that’s all there is to it. You didn’t ask for all of that but I needed to share. You are a blessing for taking the time to help someone reach a step towards healing. Wishing both of you nothing but the best.

Exactly. Your perspective completely changes when you're the one stuck there. I didn't expect to be unable to care for myself either, and I felt ashamed. Not just because others felt they needed to share their input, but because I had so little empathy for others who struggled until I was there. Destigmatization is so important for the well-being of everyone, especially health wise. It all seems so different until it's your normal, and only then do you understand it.

Black hair thrives when it's left alone. (I'm not saying go a year obviously) The women who always get their har done 2x a month and stay putting their hands in their hair and using heat and chemicals, that what breaks off your hair. If you just leave black hair alone it'll thrive. I wash my hair once a month and rice water rinse three times a week and I use coconut oil and blue magic twice a week...and do a twist out or braids to the back and leave my head alone.

I just went through this myself after not doing anything with my hair for 2 years. It was so matted and tangled that I cut it off and started over; she and I have the same hair type so I know the struggle that was making it through the detangling process. My hair locked itself and started the dreading process on its own. It was ultimately easier to start over. I so resonated with this lady because it was a lot of pouring going on for years that took its toll for me. I lost a lot and struggled with doing “triage”: If I could just get through this disaster … and then another thing would pop up, and then another and another and another. This went on for like 5 years. And when it was finally over, the family I thought I had to support me weren’t there, and made it a point to dismiss the pain and loss I went through. I had my now-husband and that’s it. So self care took a backseat. That’s how mine got to 2 years. I would consistently do self-care and then fall off. I just consistently started again and I’m determined to stay on it and keep doing what I know I can do for myself. I told my husband that you fell out of the same angel division that he did because I know God sent you to work miracles and heal those of us in need. Please keep working your healing power on the rest of us. We need kindness and compassion and more folks like you.❤️

A non profit called open barbers does stuff like this in London. They run clothes swaps, do protests, just coffee and tea for any time if you go in, there's a therapist I think who works with them? It's an lgbt+ hairdressers, there's a specialist for black hair and another for colouring, and they also do home visits for disabled people who can't get there, and a sliding scale with the lowest price slots given out to poor clients... I just had to comment but there should be more places doing that!

My daughter caught nits when she was younger and I ended up catching it. The nit lotion ended up tangling and matting my hair immediately. It was like the girls in this video. I went to the hairdressers in tears and said whatever you do don’t cut it off as I had been growing it for years. The hairdresser without my knowledge took a razor blade to my hair and cut off the entire thing. I couldn’t even get it into a hair band. I said what did you do, she laughed. My hair went from my mid back to short, short. My hair still hasn’t regained its original length a decade later. It’s great to see a hairdresser that takes care. I also really appreciated your compassion and sensitivity towards this young lady. Support is what she needs and you gave it to her.

Years ago I got very ill. I was bed ridden for about 6 months. I had long jet straight hair but over the 6 months it became matted. My appearance put me in such a deep depression. I lost too much weight, I looked like a vampire and my once long beautiful hair was a knotted disaster. I wanted to just stay in my house and never leave. My friend talked me into going to a salon to get my hair cut off and styled. I went to a salon I never been to, figured nobody knew me and they would laugh at me, refuse me and boot me out, the first one kinda did! Said they couldn't help me because my mats were to close to my scalp. Seen them smirking and whispering. I wanted to just die! My friend forced me to go to another as they took walk ins too, so I walked in and told the lady in the front, what I wanted and why it was the way it was. I was in tears. An older woman who must of been listening came up from the back looked at me and said.. no need to cut off your gorgeous hair, not sure what she seen but it was far from gorgeous. And she took me by the hand and took me back to her station then to the sink. She worked magic in that sink, used several products, some of this, wait, put some of that, wait. With in about 45 mins, she was putting a comb thru my hair. I didn't even feel any pulling. She talked to me like she knew me my whole life, talked to me like a human being, made it seem my wreck of a head of hair was something she seen a lot and was no biggie. I went in embarrassed but after a few mins she had me feeling better and hopeful. After she was done cutting and styling, my hair was longer then I remembered, super shiney and gorgeous (just like she said!), the person in the mirror was a woman I forgot existed. I cried and she cried with me. God may have healed my sickness, but he sent me to an angel to heal my soul. Price was $9.99 plus tip.. she got a 100 dollar bill. If I had more I would of given it. A few months later I went back to that salon to get a trim, I asked for the Angel who worked that miracle for me, but she retired a couple weeks before. I just watched another angel working a miracle and I can guarantee the woman hiding behind the mask was in tears with a huge smile on her face,. God bless all the stylists who use their talents, other then just use it as a job.. that can work miracles, to not only fix hair but restore confidence and fix souls. What a story! Glad you had that experience good and bad made you the best version of yourself and better to come. You speak truth, now that’s something I RESPECT from my soul. Painted such vivid pictures through energy alone, Mam God bless you and your future. Wherever Miss Teesha at, bless her to!💯 brings me actual genuine happiness to know people like yourself beating the STRUGGLE and making it out of a hellhole. You deserve it, live life with 100% confidence in yourself. That’s goes to all who see this.

Or physical illness too… I have an autoimmune and autonomic disorder which both make me super susceptible to getting sick. I’ve been battling an ongoing bout of illness since October. It’s just a simple cold so anyone else would be fine but for me I get bronchitis and secondary infections every freaking time and end up laid out in bed with a fever and zero energy to eat let alone wash my face and brush my hair. 😢

I just continuously brushed the back and front, which made my hair knot up right in the middle. My mom was so upset😫😫 And I have curly hair. She cut the middle out while crying. But at the time, I didn’t know why she was so upset and emotional about cutting it out lol 😂

I’ve been in that type of depression where I didn’t comb my hair and would just throw a wig on a matted mess. I knew it was bad underneath and every time I looked at it, it made me even more depressed so I would sleep in my wigs so I wouldn’t see it. This time in my life was a reflection of what was going on with everything in my life. Just like the mess under that wig, my life was a mess and I was covering it up, not reaching out for help and settling for “the look” of being okay. I finally shared what was happening with my best friend who was also a hair stylist. She had me come over and loved on me, hugged me, prayed for me and we cried together. It took forever for me to allow her to remove my wig and I cried hard. I felt like the band-aide was ripped out and I was exposed. She worked with my hair and it felt so good to be washed and cared for when I couldn’t do it for myself. Depression is real. Please don’t live in this pain. Reach out to someone you trust.

By doing this and posting it (and I'm so glad your client was brave and gracious enough to let you post, so she deserves a huge thanks as well), you're showing both people in these positions and other stylists not to give up on hair in this condition. Forcing someone to shave their hair can be dehumanizing and after any situation that leads to someone's hair being in that condition, that's the last thing they need. This is so uplifting. I'm sharing it with my stylist and I hope everyone else who watches it does the same!
