See I dunno... it's a totally scummy move, but it's a really interesting game theory. By giving the person in the lead the most amount of weapons and resources in exchange for not being immediately targeted by them, and forcing your other opponents to focus on a much greater threat or they will lose you can slowly build resources while forcing your opponents to deplete theirs before you actually have to start trying to compete and eventually close out the game. It's not very sporting, but I think it's pretty good gamesmanship.

  • @liamw.1313

@@alexmohrmann8825 the issue is that each game is not a played in a vacuum. If I have to focus the player giving 5-0 every game that they do that, that player will learn the giving 5-0s is not the optimal play. While the game theory aspect is interesting, I think Commander players are a particularly bad example of players within a game, because game theory relies on each player attempting to make the optimal play to maximize their own chance of winning. While In commander, players tend to do a very poor job of doing that, on purpose or not.

I mean I wouldn't call it for no reason or bullying. He was open for attacks and had a scary boardstate. He also is known to have the stronger decks on commander clash with great synergies. If you looked at the cards he had in hand (especially portrazer and colossification), next turn, he could actually easily get a winning boardstate. If he got another turn he could cast portrazer and make it unblockable, then get 3 extra combat phases and untap all creatures including the mana dorks, this gives enough mana to cast colossification and free equip belt of giant strength. This doesn't pump his beatle though so he can't get the 1/1's. He can also just cast collosification make his commander a 31/31 gitve 31 counters to beatle making 31 insects and just pass. Tomer is playing it down a lot saying how weak his board is while he has a lot of tricks up his sleeve

For those thinking they were wrong targeting Tomer, If you look at his hand, he could almost win next turn. He could cast portrazer with haste thanks to rhythm of the wild, make it unblockable getting a total of 4 combat steps giving his commanders buff 4 times (he could give his beatle 20 counters for example). Then he could untap his mana dorks generating enough mana for colossification, cast it on his commander and free equip belt. This makes his commander 31 power total. He could also just cast collosification and free equip belt, making his commander a 31/31 and giving the beatle 31 counters which gives him 31 1/1's. Tomer has very synergistic decks and is always a threat. He also tends to play it down, say his boardstate is weak while he has a win in hand. That's why, in this instance it was right to focus him I think.

I disagree with Tomer's opinion on how the game played out. I think by not playing out his commander to potentially get mana drained, Seth basically counters the spell without using resources. I think the play would have to been run it out. If Seth counters then it is out of his hand opening others to wrath the board and getting the counter out. if he doesn't use it no harm, no foul. Tomer also said earlier in the game gotta make the control player have it/use it and then doesn't follow that same sage advice.

I think having a player (Seth) being in a winning position, and having another player (Crim) target a player in a losing position (Tomer) doesn’t make a fun game. The whole idea of the “points” system incentivizes trying to get first. If the players are only seeking to avoid last for Clash On, they are incentivized to simply hit the player in the worst position. Its sometimes funny to see desperate plays to avoid last, but not where the player in the worst position just gets targeted

I think Richards approach to this episode is appropriate. He respects the play. Tomer suffers from something I do which is at time not liking the way other people threat assess and play. You have to play your game and not get stuck on how others play. Like if you think you have to pay for Rhystic, you have to pay for sentinel, or your playing wrong then play that way but don’t complain that others don’t play the way you want them to. That commentary doesn’t help and adds a level of feel bads to the whole play group

Never paying for Study is like playing the game theory game of Chicken and always choosing not to turn away/cooperate. It abuses other players' desire not to have the worst outcome for both players of Chicken (here, a pre-determined non game of magic via overwhelming card advantage if nobody paysfor the Study player). I think Seth does this in order to get a better chance of winning the magic game (or at least doing better than players who pay the Study tax) because other non-Rhystic Study players pay the tax in fear of a miserable non-game. While Seth either 1) doesn't care if any games are predetermined due to card advantage, or 2) he's sure he can coerce the other non-Study players into paying tax and gaining a mana advantage because he knows they care more about avoiding the worst outcome than he does. If Seth's opponents without the Study think it's the latter, they could all stop paying for study when he doesn't (tit-for-tat strategy) and see if that changes his attitude after they all play several predetermined-by-card-advantage games where the study Player always wins. Or they could just house-ban Rhystic Study. Which would avoid the Goldfish crew and/or fans having to sit through long non-games. Or arguments about paying for Study. Which may be fun for Seth who likes trolling opponennts, but isn't fun for fans (except for the ones who like to see Tomer in pain).

Getting upset at other peoples threat assessment gets rough when there's 4 people with very different styles of playing, especially when it's pretty obvious Seth, Crim and Tomer all have their own personal crusades at this point (Paying the 1, Green, feeling targeted).

@@shayneweyker let’s say you’re 100% correct and the person with Rhystic always wins if one player isn’t paying for it. At that point your argument seems to be “let me play your deck for you cause I’ll play it better/ correct.” At that point you should play by yourself or find another play group because it is certainly not in keeping with the multiplayer aspect of the game which is to let others play the way they’re going to play - which again I think is what Richard does here

@@LzyBn1987 I said if *nobody* pays for it then it leads to so much card advantage the Study player is likely to win. If only one player doesn't pay, then that's only 1/3 the card advantage of nobody paying, and the card advantage isn't nearly as game outcome determining. Of course if the Study gets removed or disabled that's an exception. But enchantments are pretty durable.

Crim literally told Seth (around 1:11:15 ) if I draw a land it won't kill you. Proceeds to kill Seth using Richard's turn. That was really dirty and I would not make deals with Crim in the future because he broke his deal. If I was in Seth's place I would be very very salty. Seth literally could have killed him and spared him just to be killed. That was so stupid. I also feel bad for Tomer because he literally couldn't do anything, and then was just killed. (he should have cast his commander into mana drain imo but that's a separate point. ) This game had stupid politics and it made it kinda unfun to watch tbh. The way Crim behaved in this game was pretty awful and I really don't like it.

Dunno about Seth having to be salty. Many groups play with unreliable deals and game theory munchkinry can be really fun. But it's also IMO a stupid reason to ever open up your back to Crim, as we've seen for how little he stabs it for on every ocasion. And while I agree that Ganging on Tomer for nonsensical reasons is a really weird trend on Commander Clash, I'd still appreciate being put out of my misery, instead of being kept around as a token while also being hated out of the game. Those games are always pure torture to me, especially with lower power decks without real 0-100 comeback potential.

That fact or fiction was just an ass-kiss until he could backstab and if I'm Tomer I have a hard time playing with him since he seems to have a hard-on for focusing him out first.

This is my least favorite game by far, what tomer said was true. It felt really bad to watch him being dunked on as ive been in that situation and it makes you not want to play with those people again :( I dont blame him for taking a season off as this is a bit of a pattern for the group and towards the end of the last season it was clear he wasnt having fun playing for that reason. Anyone can justify anything and if they didnt profess to prioritize fun game play to some degree I wouldnt have minded crim's play as it was technically deece but like richard said just like stax and OG vorinclex all work they feel really bad but the person with them still raises there chances of winning. I also found the fact seth kept favoring crim despite him being entirely blatant about the motivation of his "favor" he rewarded him beyond handsomely to the degree he didnt even bog his graveyard which for a re-animator deck is insane regardless of the "favor" that has been done was also salt inducing even from the spectator position.
