    There wasn't really much to compare. Most of the plagues were beyond the special effects capabilites of the time that the "Ten Commandments" was made, and even the few they did use honestly did not look that great. "Prince of Egypt" on the other hand is beyond state of the art.

    The main thing I appreciate between the two movies, is that if you did peel away the religious elements (which is stupid, since they're retelling the story of Exodus, but I hear some people that try and do that), Prince of Egypt still stands as more entertaining and engrossing. It feels more like Ten Commandments is a religious movie that happens to be entertaining, while Prince of Egypt is an entertaining movie that happens to be religious, if that makes any sense. TC works better if you're specifically trying to tell the Exodus story verbatim, but PoE works better if you just want to watch a movie.

  • @andrewchung2940

    @andrewchung2940

    5 жыл бұрын

    Just a clarification, Ten Commandments is not telling the Exodus story verbatim either. There are a ton of changes, subplots, and expansions from the original story to make it more cinematic. Even though TC is a more reverential, overtly religious film than the more humane PoE, both actually prioritize entertainment and drama over faithful adaptation, just from a different angle.

  • @thatmoviegirl3814

    @thatmoviegirl3814

    I think the reason why people peel away the religious elements is to try and find its core. Like NC said, if you peel away Prince of Egypt, its core is the bond between the brothers. And that's not to say a story's core can't be about God, but what does the core say about God? About our relationship to the religion? TC's core wasn't the bond between brothers, so what was it about? Fearing God? Taking your destiny? The fact that you kind of have to guess is why I personally like PoE more. You understand it immediately and can connect with what it's saying.

    While I can see how Doug would like a more empowered and BA depiction of Moses, the Prince of Egypt version is actually more accurate. Moses wasn't really all that intimidating. In fact, he didn't really have much confidence in himself at all and many believe he had a speech impediment of sorts (at the very least, he wasn't great at speech)

    I don't think the Bible directly says he had an actual stutter or impediment, unless there was a euphemism that was lost in translation. The primary quote about this comes from Moses himself in Ex 4:10: "...I am not eloquent, neither before or since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue." (NKJ) The Biblical Moses had a running theme of low self-confidence, and often doubted that he could do what God wanted and convince people to do things. That was his main issue, whether he actually stuttered or not.

It is one of my favorite movies of all time, I do love how they portrayed God; the portrayal was so beautiful and terrifying, but in a good way, all at the same time. THE SOUNDTRACK!! Zachery Schmidt Eh. I mean the movie is fine but it never had me extremely awe stricken. Cept for the scene with Kieta had that thing going on with her crystal. Plus she voiced by Cree Summers so extra points there. But story wise I wasn’t terribly invested and the villain is forgettable. The cast itself has funny moments and some memorable even today but again, was never extremely invested. Beautiful movie and they did make the world and environment feel big and important, but if I were to pick an underrated Disney film that caught my attention, I’d say Treasure Planet. Not only was it a passion project and it shows, I was thoroughly invested in nearly all the characters. The story is simple but honestly, Silver and Jim’s relationship tugs on my heart strings and makes me just want them to achieve their goals. Plus the effort put into the animation! It really boggles my mind how little attention that film got.

    I actually liked the prince of Egypt moses better. As someone who's actually in the process of reading the bible, it seems to me that TPOE version of moses was more accurate. In the bible moses wasn't very confident at all. in fact he had a speech impediment (which is why he has Aaron do most of the speaking for him). while in TPOE moses doesn't have a speech impediment, he's definitely not confident in being a prophet of god. while in TTC it seems moses is very action hero-esk. I suppose that if I saw TTC before I read Exodus in the bible I might have leaned more towards TTC version, but for me TPOE version just seems more three- dimensional and accurate to how Moses really was. Still wish that someday they'll make a movie about moses where he actually has a speech impediment

But through God he did the most unbelievable things because he want to free his people. He probably was hurt to leave his brother and the place he was raised and the prince of Egypt conveys someone more relatable more human. Even though you know the story it still makes it feel more interesting and alive. I honestly used to be bored after hearing about it over and over. I knew the plagues the burning burning bush the rising water to cross the red sea but...this...this did not bore me no matter how much I watch it. It just is so...breath taking. I feel that both Moses' are a bit on equal standing. The fact is that they were made in vastly different times with vastly different styles of acting. I saw TTC first as my mother loved the movie. (Even bought a collectors DVD set for her on mother's day about 10 years back.) The difference of the two seem to be TTC is comic book hero Moses and TPoE is a youth novel Moses. Though I would have to agree that I prefer TPoE. As you said, Moses was a flawed character in the bible. Most of God's chosen are flawed people and TTC just didn't really have any flaws. I mean the reason Moses never gets to enter the promised land is due to the fact that instead of speaking to a rock/stone, he hit it with his staff. To note on the portrayals of God, I would say that TPoE does better. It did a show and not tell for the most part of the wrathful God that many seem to think of as old testament God and the softer loving God was done in a very clever way. The voice of God should be both unimaginable and deeply familiar. Thus his voice was done with a multitude of other voices but, most strongly with the same voice as Moses.

    The way I would personally divvy out the points: Best Moses: Prince of Egypt. When I read the Bible I get the impression that Moses, while being raised by Egyptian royalty, is himself not all that self-confident when he has to confront them (that's why Aaron was sent alongside him), so the portrayal in PoE seems much closer to the historical Moses. He's also not relying on his own strength but rather God's, whereas in TC he's much more verbose and grandstanding. Props to the TC actor for acting, but it kinda skirts past the real point. Best Rameses: Prince of Egypt. Again, it's the personal connection with and conflict with Moses that makes Rameses great. We can see where he came from and sympathize with him, but ultimately his pride and hardened heart is what causes the suffering of his people, much like in the Bible. Best supporting cast: Ten Commandments. I prefer the serious portrayals in TC over the more comedic versions in PoE, as it adds to the drama more. Best [portrayal of] God: Prince of Egypt. While I do appreciate the booming voice and raw power shown with the TC portrayal, the one seen in PoE is much more in line with the loving and just God that I read about in the Bible and that I have personally experienced. Best story: Prince of Egypt. This is probably just my own bias, but I prefer the way the story is told in PoE than in TC. I know that's due to the animation style making the visuals more appealing, but hey, it works so who am I to complain?

    Yeah.... I've never liked that bit of the movie. It sounds to like it's meant to be from exodus 8:10 where it's been mistranslated in the king James version. The original text has the tetragrammaton (the four letters in Hebrew that spell out YHWH or JHVH) in place of LORD or God. The King James version has several inaccuracies like that.

  • @KainZeuxis

    @KainZeuxis

    4 жыл бұрын

    Cranite Star it's an inaccuracy. A deliberate one at that. Ancient Hebrew is only written in consonants. Normally when translating to English the vowels are added where needed. However do to a misunderstanding of the commandment to "not take the name of god in vain" translators began to replace the divine name with titles and as a result the original pronouciation is lost. Because of this most translators often refuse to place the name of god in the Bible. And as for what the divine name should look like in English it's either Yahweh (YHWH) or Jehovah (JHVH)

    I know this doesn't really matter, but I wanted to start a discussion. I agree with his point of view the the '56 Moses was more a leader even from the beginning. But, I've studied Theology in school, and we first go over the Old Testament (by the way, I was really disappointed when the stuff from the movie wasn't in the actual Bible XD). What I've learned is that God chooses those of lower class, those who need redeeming (which is why he chose Moses even if he was a murderer). This is why I feel the Prince of Egypt Moses was better because he seemed like the kind of guy God would choose. The '56 one always seemed way to proud and stiff, while the Prince of Egypt one had more emotion. The Prince of Egypt had a more gentler attitude, kinda like a shepherd to the Israelites. When I read the story of Moses, I would rather picture The Prince of Egypt one rather than the '56 one. That's just my opinion. Anyone have a counterpoint? Cause I'd love to hear it. Sorry if this is too long XD

    True, and not to mention Moses is supposed to have self-worth issues. The reason he even brings Aaron with him is because he believed he lacked the charisma to influence others. So he needed someone to relay his words. So a proud and perfect Moses is exactly the opposite of what the Bible claims.

    While this isn't a counter-argument, it is relevant. The Ten Commandments is without a doubt more influenced by Christian ideology rather than scripture, which is ironic seeing as there is a mention of scripture. Many Christians fall into the pit--at least once--of reading the Bible through a black-and-white lens. Misconception: Anyone who follows God is inherently good and anyone who doesn't is inherently evil. Par for the course, Moses is remembered and idolized as a superhero, while the Egyptians are all seen as villainous monsters. Humanity is more complex than that. Moses is sinful, Ramses is sinful; Moses has a heart dealing with a heavy burden, Ramses has a heart dealing with a heavy burden. They just so happen to be brothers playing on different sides for reasons that are pretty understandable. The Prince of Egypt not only showcases a closer-to-accurate Moses, it gives the viewer a more realistic look at humanity. I admire how it clears up a misconception about God as well. God is vengeful + all-powerful, but also loving + merciful. Thank you for reading. ^^ My writing is brutally honest. ^^;

For example, if you think of a great Batman, who comes to mind first? Kevin Conroy? Michael Keaton? Christian Bale (overrated but still)? Hardly anybody points to Val Kilmer and granted, that's partially because Batman Forever isn't exactly the peak of Batman's history in cinema but Kilmer's performance in it was still pretty damn good.

If I remember correctly they skin over the murder, rape, genocide, slept with your wife stuff that explains why Joseph DESERVES to be highly favored. So it looks like he is the favored child just because and the brothers almost seem justified. Also I feel like Joseph is more naive and becomes less naive in that movie instead of already having a good world view and faith that gets challenged. And as I write this I just realized that the 1999 one is the Donny Osmond one and all my points are invalid.

    Depends on how you explain repentance. Repentance is more than just saying "I'm sorry," it's changing an entire life and an entire worldview. It's recognizing that you were wrong, and not only putting aside what you did, but actively working to make up for it and, quite often, working against it.

    Gonna say it, Ten Commandments may be an impressive movie but holy crap it has not aged well. The acting was done entirely with voice but with almost zero body language or facial expressions that could convey deeper, more complex emotions. Compare that to Prince of Egypt which, as was mentioned, can show a wide range of emotions in less than a minute and it seems completely natural in the context of the scene. And I agree Charlton Heston has an amazing screen presence and charisma buuuuut he almost sounds like he's just delivering lines really well instead of playing an actual character in a story. Ten Commandments comes across less like a movie and more like... a well-done dramatic reenactment. Oh, and regarding the sillier moments in Prince of Egypt... well, it's a Dreamworks movie. And I know that the "Playing With the Big Boys" song with Steve Martin and Martin Short gets the most flack for being kinda out of place. However, I state that, in the context of their tricks and magic being a bunch of smoke and mirrors, the big song and dance almost makes MORE sense, since it can act as misdirection from their charlatanry. In fact, it would also explain why nobody seems to care that Moses' snake-staff kills/eats the other snakes.

    To be fair to Ten commandments, it's not necessarily bad acting, it's just a more 'stage acting ' rather than 'film acting'. The actors actor like they're part of a staged production not a film which hollywood never does anymore (for the reasons you just pointed out - stage acting on film comes off unnatural). They probably decided to go with stage acting for this movie because it was still considered the 'higher' form of acting or at least the more serious.

    I feel like the new Moses from the Prince of Egypt is better. He better represents the original from the Bible. In the Bible, when God tells him he is to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery, he tries to get God to change his mind, as he is not a good speaker, nor is he persuasive. He wasn't confident as his role of the Savior of the Israelites, so I feel The Prince of Egypt portrayed this better.

    Normally I'm always for original dubs but damn, my country did wonders with this movie. Usually Bulgarian voice actors have deep voices which is a downside to dubbing anime and movies with many children characters. However, those deep voices showed their true glory in "The Prince of Egypt" Bulgarian voiceover and even surpassed some of the performances in the English version. To me, the first song with the grieving mother was overflowing with more emotion in the Bulgarian dub. I also can't not mention how great was the song with the two priests. Thanks to the deep, powerful and evil-sounding performance the Bulgarians did then the song came out truly menacing, even satanic which fits wondefully with the film's overall theme. I got chills listening to it when I was young. Both dubs are fantastic, no question, but personally I prefer my country's. :)

    I will say Critic, as a christian, I found your "judgement" of God funny. In an enjoyable way. It's your understanding of what you are doing that made me laugh. That being said, I agree with your choice of "God", but for a different reason. You stated that the "God" in "Prince of Egypt" was a more loving God, and you played a number of good scenes with God in them.... but you missed the one main part that shows, even the "Prince of Egypt" God, does have a wrathful side. When Moses balks at the idea that God chose him and its the wrong choice, what does God do? SIT HIM ON HIS ASS! God gets in Moses' face and tells him what for. Compared to God in "The Ten Commandments" though, God in the "Prince of Egypt" is tamer. Great job Critic!

    The thing about this, is, The Ten Commandments and The Prince of Egypt are really two different movies when you think about it. They were written differently, directed differently, and had a different focus. The Ten Commandments focused on Moses and his journey from Egyptian royalty to his life as a slave and his eyes being opened to how they were being treated, and his roll in that treatment as well as his coming to terms with his past and his destiny. The Prince of Egypt, on the other hand, focused more on the brother aspect of the story and the relationship between the two, from them being the sons of the Pharaoh to Rameses casting Moses out, and the emotional conflict that caused them both; especially when he comes back just to tell Rameses that he's now his enemy. They're both good films, with emotionally powerful scenes, but I don't think they can be compared so easily. It's like comparing a Johnny Gold with a Granny Smith. Sure, they're both fruit and they're both apples, but that's it. They both have different tastes. Sure 'Commandments' and 'Egypt' are both movies, and they both tell the story of Moses and Rameses, but that's it. They were made for two different tastes.

I didn’t think my request on his forum would get much get more response as I moved on and haven’t requested much since I first requested it until around October 2010 I saw it would be one of his next reviews. He eventually pushed it to November 2010 and I was so excited to see one of my requested getting a review video. 16:56, Back in ancient times it was believed that all Gods people worshiped existed. The Egyptian, Greek/Roman, Mesopotamian, and Pagan Pantheons, were all just as legitimate as the God of the Bible. Evidence for this can be see in how many ancient civilizations (Romans are the best example) would absorb the pantheons of the people they conquered to gain their gods favor in addition to their own. However every group saw their god(s) as the supreme god(s). The stronger the civilization the more powerful the god(s) was/were. This is no different for the Hebrews, they saw their personal god as the supreme God over all others and why the commandment specifically said "thou shall have no Gods before me" rather than "there are no other gods but me". So technically Zeus and Anubis could still be out there somewhere if you believe it lol.

    Actually fun fact about the snake thing. Some interpretations say essentially that while The gods of Egypt were not nonexistent, Yahweh was simply beyond anything they could manage. Thus, why the snake from moses’s staff (actually Arron’s in the Bible) quickly devoured the Egyptians. Or to put it TL/DR, it wasn’t a show of legitimacy, but rather of how easily the Hebrews deity could beat the gods of Egypt, if the need arose.

    I think Ramases in the 1956 film is a lot more complex than the Critic gives him credit for, so much complex that it's very hard to dislike him. It's not like it's his fault Moses is more competent and his own father clearly favors Moses over him. He's polite and soft-spoken to other Egyptians, shows genuine sympathy to one of his men when the 10th Plague kills the man's son, is devastated when his own son dies, is ready to kill Dathan for accusing Moses, and deals fairly with Dathan by keeping his word to him instead of just killing him and using his information about Moses anyway. Brynner wanted the character to be complex and multi-faceted, and he succeeded. Take him out of the film and it's a lot less interesting. And it can't be denied that Rameses could have easily had Moses killed instead of exiling him. Sure, he gave an excuse, but you can't watch the scene and the movie without thinking that Moses and Rameses probably grew up together and have a history that's more than being rivals. Like Seti refusing to kill Moses, it's not that much of a stretch to think that Rameses probably just could not bring himself to do it either.

  • @bridanihay88

    I loved your point of view about Rameses. I love both movies so much and watch them every Easter. And I always pick up new details that I didn't notice before. My husband and I were talking in depth about the characters, different scenes, which story is more heartbreaking (losing the woman you're in love with, and also your father vs. losing your brother), etc. I always thought of TTC Rameses as a flat-out jerk, as most everyone does, but there was a scene towards the end where he really showed how vulnerable he was...he was talking to Moses in the palace, and it was obvious that he had felt second best his entire life. He was the first born of Pharaoh ("I am the son of your own body") and by birthright, he should have been the next Pharaoh, no questions asked. But when Sethi opens it up to let Moses have a chance, because he loves Moses more than his own son, that cuts Rameses---yes, he wants the power and glory, but he also wants his father's love and respect, and he knows he is not the first choice. And with Nefretiri, I don't believe he loved her, but again, by birthright, she was supposed to marry the next Pharaoh, which was supposed to be Rameses outright. The facts that his father loved Moses more and that Nefretiri loved Moses more could be huge factors on why Rameses is how he is in TTC: he always felt second best to Moses (and Nefretiri goading him all the time doesn't help either.) This was the first time I saw things from his point of view, and it was definitely interesting. Yul Brynner was an amazing actor. Both movies are fantastic in their own ways! ❤️

    I kind of have a love hate relationship with the story as an atheist not because of the story, but the tone of the story. Imagine for a moment someone imitated moses in modern egypt, including the killing of all the 1st born. Would you call that person a great moral figure of humanity? no... yet Moses is always portrayed as the good guy and Ramses as the bad guy, when in reality they both have reasonable positions and do monstrous things to archieve their positions. It almost feels dirty to root for Moses as the movies and original story want you too for that same reason, at least to me.

    At the end of the day, this is a complicated issue and I'm not going to pretend to be an expert with the be-all end-all answers on this matter. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind with this story. 1) While it is often used as a cop-out and I would honestly say should never be accepted as the final answer, there is the matter to keep in mind that God is simply a being of higher thinking than man is, and there are going to be instances like this that are troublesome for men to truly get a grasp on. Consider the difference between man's thinking and, say, a dog's. We all know how harmful chocolate can be to a dog, but the dog doesn't know that and doesn't even have the thinking capacity to know that. If there's some chocolate on the floor, the dog's level of understanding is only sophisticated enough to know that there is food on the floor and that they want to eat it. When you, operating out of superior understanding, recognize that the chocolate is going to harm the dog if they eat it, you know that you have to take that chocolate away despite the fact that the dog really wants to eat it. I've done this a few times before with my dog and every single time my dog gets upset with me and keeps trying to eat the chocolate, and I keep having to take it away from her because I know how harmful it would be to her even if she doesn't (and doesn't even have the capacity for knowing such a thing). While obviously there is a difference between "not giving your dog chocolate" and "killing every firstborn son in the entire land of Egypt" the same principle still applies. Think about the difference in intellect between a man and a dog, then think about the difference in intellect between a man and a being who literally knows everything there ever was or is to know in the entire created universe. Ultimately, this is a difference between worldviews. As an atheist, you operate out of the worldview that man is the being of ultimate reason and that his logic is the epitome of reason and understanding in the universe. As a Christian, I operate from the worldview that God is the being of ultimate reason and that his logic is the epitome of reason and understanding in the universe. When I see God do something that seems odd through the perspective of human reasoning, there is a level to which I accept that my thinking is lesser to His (although, I am still an advocate that we should seek to learn and understand God as much as limited reasoning will allow, and that such an idea should never be used as a cop-out). However, as an atheist, you see God operate in a manner that seems odd to human reasoning and, believing mankind as the ultimate authority, see this as a sign that God is contradictory or illogical. Ultimately, for the purposes of this specific conversation, I would ask that you be willing to empathize with a worldview in which God is the ultimate being of intellect and reason. Otherwise, there's really no point in continuing the matter, since a secular worldview is always going to see God in this way and, as such, any justification given for Him is going to be mute in your eyes anyway. 2) Moving on, it is also important to remember that God would have been perfectly fine with not enacting any of these plagues...if Pharaoh had been willing to listen to Him. God wanted the Israelites to be free and, one way or another, it was going to happen. If Pharaoh had respected God's wishes and released the Hebrews from the get-go, life in Egypt would have gone on as normal afterwards. Even from an atheistic worldview, one has to acknowledge that Pharaoh is at least partially responsible for the things that happened to Egypt. He saw examples of God's power and the extent to which He would go to free the Hebrews, yet he let his stubbornness and pride get the best of him and convince him to test God until He was forced to use more and more drastic measures. God started off with relatively harmless signs, He didn't skip straight to killing all of the firstborn. He gave Pharaoh plenty of opportunities to recognize God's doing and accept his command. Pharaoh was the one who kept refusing to respect God despite all the signs being given to him. God still operates the same way to this day. He never skips to the harshest punishment or the most extreme signs He can give out. He will always give you numerous chances to obey Him before He resorts to anything drastic. However, man is a stubborn and proud species, and sometimes loss and heartbreak are simply the only ways that he will be able to listen.

    There are many more good religious movies than just Prince of Egypt! It's just that those movies are not getting much exposures as the secular ones. For instance, there are only three movies in history that won 11 Academy Awards, and one of them is a religious film (Ben-Hur)! A religious movie that can share an association with James Cameron's Titanic and LOTR Return of the King!

    Moses' depiction in the Ten Commandments is completely inaccurate to the Moses of the Bible, and Prince of Egypt's Moses is much better. Moses in the Bible is *not* a strong or respectable person at first, and nobody would expect great things from him. He is *very* resistant to God at the burning bush, and even asks God to send someone else to free the Israelites. In the Ten Commandments Moses walks up to the burning bush and kneels before it with a look of awe and splendor, as if knowing this was his role his whole life and is perfectly okay with it. He constantly says wise things that indicate his inherent greatness. But that's not who Moses is described to have been. I know NC is trying to keep things balanced and keep you guessing as to which he chose as the better film, but the Ten Commandments butchered Moses' character sooo bad. Prince of Egypt deserved the point for the better Moses.

    Unfortunately, an unwritten rule of 1950s Hollywood was that all male leads had to be strong and charismatic individuals, so there's really no way they could have done an accurate depiction of Moses at the time

    About God in burning bush. I love that the burning bush in The Prince of Egypt first look dead, dried up. Than as God talk with Moses the burning bush is revive and blossom. Such little detail but it have symbolism. As bush revive, Moses purpose in live and his belive revive. It also show that the God in The Prince of Egypt first and foremost is the Giver of life. Such attention to detail is also WIN for The Prince of Egypt. p.s. Sorry for my english, not my native language.

    Animated Moses & Rameses are like a reverse Thor & Loki. Rameses, the older crowned sibling is the scorned by the Pharoah while Thor the crowned older sibling is favored by Odin, King of Asgard & The younger adopted sibling Moses is a lovable scamp while Loki also being a younger adopted sibling is somewhat scorned before he even becomes a villain. Both narratives focus on the relationships of 2 brothers

    Something ironic I found comparing these two films is that Ten Commandments, the live action film, best developed its characters through speech and voice, while the Prince of Egypt, the animated film, best developed its characters through facial expressions and body language. Both are still excellent films nonetheless.

    Agathe Dallaire Again I doubt they'd be able to find an entire cast of competent middle eastern actors. They are a monrity in the US and therefore a minority in the film business. Meaning finding a whole cast of good middle eastern actors would be hard and sadly that would mean some white characters(or maybe hispanic i think they'd be able to pull it off) are casted

    I love this movie because it clearly took itself seriously but also made it accessible for children to understand about genocide. It doesn’t treat like kids like idiots. It says in the beginning they consulted over hundreds of historians from Islam and Judaism to be historically accurate. The Egyptians for the first time are actually black too, which contrary to western belief, we’re black. Such a bold move to make this film the first film by DreamWorks, their step into the animation industry. Truly one of a kind.

    In the 10 Commandments a lot of the emotional heart that Prince of Egypt gave to Ramses/Moses as brothers was between Seti (Pharoah) and Moses. And here I have to give the win to Sir Cedric Hardwicke over Patrick Stewart. When Seti can't pronounce his own doom for Moses...for me one of the greatest emotional moments in movie history actually. Hardwicke was a true master of his craft, even beyoind Stewart.
