Old-School Anime Retrospective: Bubblegum Crisis
1980s OVAs are well-remembered for being experimental, adult, violent, and very reflective of the worries of their era, and 1987's Bubblegum Crisis is one of the most influential, both in Japan and abroad. Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio looks over the dark cyberpunk series and somehow holds back from making a single "OK, Boomer" joke.

It's funny to hear this described as a forgotten classic, it had such a big presence in 90's anime fandom.
so iconic of the era! back in the webring days this series was hugely popular. the title is so eyecatching when paired with the visuals... 80's anime had a knack for that.
Makes me want to watch it! Nice video.
Just discovered your channel and your vids are really enjoyable! I Really appreciate how you often cover the history or context of some shows you cover, including the western scene
your channel is so gooood
BGC had an odd history...its tries with Mospeda and MegaZone 24 is as legendary as the series itself! The character and mecha designers would be involved with GallForce and Maccross which are still PHENOMENAL as many of them became huge industry hits! The music was amazing and many hits borrowing heavily from Rock, Pop and other hits from the 80s. A perfect blend of genres to make a delicious treat for the eyes and ears!
I haven't really seen the OVA but I've watched BGC: Tokyo 2040 every few years and it's great, the dub is well acted, its localized well and is some ways better than the sub, but mind the tonal shift at the midpoint in ep 13. Its great when a story can have a sense of scale and stakes where there can be consequences without needing to reset the status quo at the end of each episode so that the story never needs to end, in this case it has a beginning, middle and end, which is good.
So what's the story with the audio? It's fine, but not quite as good as previous videos.
great retrospective. I've been curious to hear more opinions about this franchise. thinking about buying it.
Ok boomer
