    I definitely appreciate 2040 as a standalone work, but even as someone who adores the original OVA series and all its spin-off content, I think 2040 has the advantage of putting all of its essential story into one consistent medium. Bubblegum Crisis 2032 the OG series was a forerunner of multi-media storytelling in that it used a plethora of mediums to convey bits of its story (the OVAs, music videos, manga, novels, audio dramas, games, etc) but because it was still such an early example of multi-media storytelling, it suffered from “Bionicle Syndrome” where essential character motivations and info that contextualizes certain events are only available in the spin-off entries and not in the actual OVAs. This back in the day was done because the OVAs often had limited budgets and fluctuating lengths so they had to get that info out somehow. Given how most people usually just watch the OVAs (and for westerners most of the spin-off media wasn’t available at all), it means the story can only stand with what’s in the OVAs which aren’t the best when it comes to consistent writing thanks to the different directors and writers. 2040 is a complete package start to finish and I really appreciate that. The characters also do honestly feel like logical evolutions of elements of the originals which still feel related to the originals while also feeling like their own things. Do kinda miss each episode having its own unique soundtrack and multiple vocal tracks which gave the OVAs such memorable personality, but it’s a TV show so I understand. I still prefer the original as my go-to, but 2040 is very underrated and deserves less hate from the fandom and just more exposure in general imo.

    I remember Bubblegum Crisis for the Tokyo 2040 version. Got the DVD Box Set in the early to mid 2000s and eventually got the original OVAs afterwards. I really enjoyed the remake for telling the entire story that the original planned to tell. Also some nice tentacle scenes with that electronic Worm and towards the ending, it was an entertaining watch all the way through.

    In Latin America there was a time at the early 2000 when we enjoyed the Locomotion Channel. Among the animes they show, the best of all time were Saber Marionette, Cowboy Bebop, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 and NG Evangelion. Even more, there was an incredible marketing team behind it, using guerrilla style anti-system slogans and ads. Bubblegum Crisis, Tokyo 2040 had has this comercial used at least since 2001: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqubl8qPopmXkrA.html The ending was "Las corporaciones son los monstruos del futuro", that could translate into: "The (Mega)Corporations are the Monsters of the Future".

    I used to watch this show back in late 90s on Locomotion. That channel had a lot of ADV shows. I never got to finish it, so now that I'm trying to get back into watching Anime I chose this one to resume my journey. I finished the show today and holy sh*t... I feel like like remembering and old friend's funeral. Nostalgia level 100.

    I enjoy both the original OVA series and the 2040 version. I will say though, I think I appreciate 2040 more because at least it has an ending 🤭 Hopefully we can get a Blu-ray release of the show someday, there's a lot of standout designs and action scenes that would look great with an HD presentation. Otherwise I'd love to track down the original 6 volume DVD set with the art box, but it's pretty rare to see it for sale these days.

    Wonderful to see someone talking about the ADV productions! This was the FIRST anime I ever got the chance to buy, the first VHS for $25 at a Suncoast ^_^. I am fortunate enough to have found the Perfect Collection Boxed set several years ago and watch it almost every year ^_^! Hope to watch more of these as time goes on, love the video! Would you have plans to do Chrono Crusade? That is another one I don't see anyone talk about, would love to hear your take of Hillary's performance in that one ^_^! SUBBED!

    Good review! You need more subs. This is a way better review than the tedious fare I normally see on ani-tube. Straightforward, straight to the point ans noticeably bereft of the 'comedy chops' of bigger content creators such as Gigguk or the insufferable soy messaging of Mother's Basement. You give a good, concise review and are fair to a very divisive series amongst BGC fans.

    As someone who both, owns the ADV Anime Essentials Collection and was introduced to the franchise through 2040, I agree that if you can get an Anime Essentials cut it is awesome all around, the audio mix is great, the extras are cool, and the show itself is always fun to go back to. Now as for that intro, it was the English ADV dub I first heard on Showtime back in '00, it was how I knew I had the right one, it was THAT memorable and that good! I later watched the OVAs and spinoffs and adore them all but, 2040 will always be the one that started it all and will always have a special place for me.

    Leon and Daley's banter is one of my favorite parts. Chris Patten was always a joy to listen to. It took me a while to buy Jason Douglas as Leon, as the only other thing I heard him in at the time was as Kyosuke in the Kimagure Orange Road movie (quite the contrast indeed), but once he finally grew on me, I couldn't imagine him as anyone else. The original OVA has several things that make it stand out without question,... but one place where ADV absolutely excels is the dubbing. I'm sorry, but AnimEigo practically DESTROYS everything it dubs, and the original Bubblegum Crisis was no exception.

    I found a DVD from the adv release of 2040 at a flea market and I was thrilled that it includes the latin american spanish dub, I don't know if that happens with other american releases but it doesn't seem to be the case. Now there's a lot of old Anime releases from Diskotek that could include the latin dub but they're definitely losing a big opportunity with the spanish speaking audiences.

    Im a hardcore Anime Cypberpunk fan...and Bubblegum Crisis' versions I view like this... Megatokyo 2033/34 has a more appealing animation style, and really dives into the roots and themes of what the series is about; even if that does include 5 minute music videos done to action scenes... ...But Tokyo 2040 told the story more cohesively. The animation was in that transitional period between cell and computer, and I think it smooths out the action well; but that same smoothness also takes definition away from the characters faces/designs. I think I prefer the Hardsuits in Megatokyo 2033, once they started with the liquid-metal hardsuits, and the mental-links and stuff...it got abit too far from Cyberpunk, and more into SciFi; and I absolutely prefer the Motoslaves in 2033, aswell. That AI bike in 2040 has nothing on the kick-ass, hail-storm firing, Super-Boomer-killing Typhoon-II Motor-slave. Im not gonna get into the character looks, because they are both products of their times; and its a redundent comparison (like arguing about frames-per-second, when the average Human Eye can barely see beyond 60FPS, so 65-120fps is redundent).

    How do you make your videos

  • @LostImpactProd

    @LostImpactProd

    Nothing too complex. I record the narration audio first (the skeleton of the video if you will), edit appropriate clips from the series to illustrate what I'm saying, record the live action portions (usually left to last due to a noisy household) and then add and balance the music. Not the most elaborate production routine in the world, but I take a lot of time making sure the clips communicate my points well and that the pacing is just right (i.e. clips that are not too short that you miss information and not too unedited that the video comes off as lazy). Hope this answers your question!

    While I do like the esthetics in the show and the nostalgic feeling it brings with it, the story itself and characters were not good enough. The first is basically non-existent till the very middle and even when it does get somewhat interesting the characters are still too weak. They just feel bland, I can't even call them stereotypes, Nene is the best one and she's nothing special really. The designs are great (all boomers and the power suits), but due to the age of this anime action is very stale and repetitive. At least if it was shorter, but damn taking all 26 is too much and the story could have been easily told in 12-15.

    My personal beef with this remake that puts me off from checking this is that unlike priss the other knightsabers look nothing like their previous designs. With how much they deviated so much from Sonodas designs they might as well just be new characters with different names. One of these days I’ll give it a chance tho.

    I discovered the original in the 1990s and … a little background story mode is in order: I'm legally blind, and I have a VERY hard time watching subbed anime. So … I don't. And y'know what? Ignore the gatekeeping asshat "otaku" crowd who have a problem with it! If you want to watch a dubbed anime made today, you go right ahead and thank Toonami for the West taking this stuff seriously. But in the 80s and early 90s, anime came in two forms: Subtitled, and BUTCHERED. I _loved_ Bubblegum Crisis, so I struggled to watch it subtitled because while the script and voice work were better than many, the music (which is half the show) is mangled beyond recognition. Still, it's hard to do for me, and while I still watch BGC about once a year … I can't watch it subtitled, it's just too much work. Fortunately for about the past 20 years, I've known every line of those eight episodes so well I can watch it in straight Japanese without actually speaking the language. 🤣 So then we come to 2040. I own it, and I watch it too. I'm VERY disappointed that they messed with the music in the dub … but 2040's music is NOT its strong suit. And I like 2040 a lot. Music is repeated and you will quickly begin to know what's going to happen in a lot of scenes because of the music that began playing as the scene began. The plot is solid, the characters are great (save Mason IMO), the character arcs are solid, the boomers having a weird mechanical/organic nature is explained… It's a good show. Is it Bubblegum Crisis? Yeah. Alternate universe, sure. It won't replace the original, but I'm okay with it. That weird AD Police set in 2040 … that's not great.

    I fully disagree with the whole battery thing, it is demonstrably lazy writing. Instead of writing a compelling fight scene, oh batteries died, just lazy. Also it's an old trope for mecha anything if it ain't lack of power it's overheating, which in most cases can be overlooked since most mechs are used in a military situation, but as vigilantes without a major support network, in fact governments looking to put them in jail too. Running around in a finicky machine that could konk out is just silly. This leaves "why they haven't been caught" question only answerable with plot armor. Just plain lazy.
