Old-School Anime Retrospective: Lost Universe

1998's Lost Universe, the space-themed spinoff of the far more famous high fantasy comedy Slayers, has fallen into obscurity thanks to its rough beginning, but despite the animation and the rocky start, it grows into a fun series in its own right that's worth the watch. Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio checks out the show, jagged edges and all, to see how it fares.

One of the few anime i ran in to as a kid before i had access to imternet, brother had this VHS tape of most the episodes and loved the space ship theme of it funny that i only finished the series as an adult still loved the universe not to much the characters as an adult.

I like the parallel of Dark Star Dugradigdo in slayers and lost universe and their unic ways to make all things stop

I saw this back in day when it air on...the internatiional channel if i remember correctly. Though not as good as lina inverse i still very much enjoyed it. Its a shame this series never took off, rewatching it again and still enjoy it despite some of its fault. Really do miss the space adventure genre, be nice to see more like this or outlaw star.

This was my favorite anime for the longest time. I watched the Cantonese dub on TV when I was little and bought the VCD box set. I instantly bought the Nozomi DVD box set and soundtrack when I stumbled upon them at two different conventions. The hero ship is still my favorite starship design of all time and I really wish they made model kits of it and other ships as well. That early CGI still looks decent. I love the originality of the weapons effects and how the FTL effects are different for each type of ships. I want merch! I want to buy and read the light novel (I don't know Japanese)! I know there are some differences between the novels and the show. Side note, the Cantonese transliteration of Canal Vorfeed is amazing! Vorfeed was made into something along the line of "old flying dagger."

Back when the default was trope-filled space opera instead of isekai for popular anime

Wow! Great writing, this anime "deep dive", if we can call it that. Just saw episode 1 an hour ago. Got reeled in by the very 90s-looking thumbnail of Canal.

Kinda unfair to use the Dirty Pair clip when talking about 'trashy anime harem looming over the genre', as they weren't involved with such activities...just sexy dangerous ' Trouble Consultants.' That said, great video retrospective! Saw Lost Universe on air in Japan and the ADV dub on the criminally overlooked ' International Channel' back in the day. Sadly LU didn't do too well ( aside from the the production issues) was the fact it just wasn't Slayers! After Slayers Try wrapped up, we fans were hungry for more! Alot of fans didn't like the limited characters, as we missed the larger roster of characters we grew to love over time, and the cgi wasn't loved...it was just ' there'. The production on the previous show was PHENOMENAL, so seeing a new show borrow heavily from it was nice...but did notice a dip in quality here and there. Many of us just referred to it as Slayers 4: IN SPACE!
