Old Louisiana Style Blues - Early Folk Blues from Little Brother Montgomery
Музыка
When Little Brother plays this piece (on a wonderful 1960 album from Magpie called "These are What I like" ) , he describes it as an old Louisiana style blues. "This is what i used to play when I was a little kid". If we take Brother (b. 1906) at his word, then this tune is a window into how the blues might have been played in the later 'teens, and how the tradition of barrelhouse blues was beginning to take shape.

Greatly appreciate your interest and support! Thanks!
I was listening to a vintage Little Brother song and it shifted into this and I thought it was just another great song performed by him. Impressive!

That means a lot, Scott. Thanks!
I looked into that Magpie album, it hasn't been reissued on CD as far as I can tell. But then I discovered that this is the same melody LBM calls 'Bob Martin Blues' (and in the book 'Deep Blues the story of LBM') this tune is attributed to Bob Martin ( someone who passed through Kentwood when LBM was a kid). LBM recorded this melody under the guise of 'Bob Martin Blues' several times in his career.

Yes, exactly! Bob Martin's Blues. He also said this became "Riverside Blues" down in New Orleans. It's a shame the LBM's 2 Magpie albums have never been reissued. They are so great.
Love what you do!! Full of life and joy!!
Lovely playing Ethan!

Супер!!!
Would be a silly question to ask if sheet music exists for this?

There's no transcription that I know of, and would be shocked if there was one. Though it wouldn't be the most difficult piece to write-out, as it's relatively straight forward. At last compared to some those early idiosyncratic boogies ...

Ethan Leinwand thanks for your reply, some people are selling sheet music of their transcriptions, dont know how they do it, I have 2. Incompetents, like me, can only marvel at your abilities! If its not on paper, I havent got a clue!

@@STANLIZ4 One of my biggest tools early on for learning this music was watching peoples fingers on KZread videos. Pause and rewind a hundred times if I had to. Maybe you could give it a shot with this song. Just takes patience, and allowing yourself to not play it 'perfectly". Also, though piano players seem to always undervalue their skills, it is quite an accomplishment to be able to learn a song from sheet music!

Ethan Leinwand Thanks Ethan, I’ll try, having only played off the page, can you believe, its difficult to conceive it can be done any other way, but will give it a try, thanks again, stan

@@STANLIZ4 I know it feels daunting, but it's doable! Step #1: What key am I in? Question, what kind of music do you play? Is it mostly blues and boogie-woogie? Or ragtime? Or neither :)
