Ethan Leinwand - East Chicago Blues (The Sparks Brothers)

Музыка

Though the title of this song is East Chicago Blues, this tune is all about St. Louis - style piano! In particular the playing of Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks.
In the 1920s and 30s , St. Louis had arguably the richest piano blues scene in the country. Piano roots run deep in St. Louis. It was one of the cradles of ragtime, and by the pre-war blues era, singers here were much more likely to be accompanied by a piano player than a guitarist. The players had a distinctive "low down" feel, with the left hand plodding a steady, mid-tempo pulse. Right hand generally had an overall sparse quality, but it was filled with rapid single note hits and unexpected Major 7th harmonies that create a haunting beauty heard no where else.

Very Nice. Beautiful tune. Interesting piano, don't think I ever saw a white one like that. Reminds me a little of the Jimmy Yancy sound, just a little sweeter. Thanks for posting and especially your comment. I am not familiar with the St. Louis sound. Thanks for turning me on to it.

Born in Verona Mississippi in the Black Prairie Belt. The Black Prairie Belt was home to some great paino players like Cooney Vaughn and Pinetop Smith.

An important area with such a rich history, as you well know! Still, though, their sound is pure St. Louis :)

Love the relaxed charm you incorporate, illusive to me as an amateur - even if I had the music!

Amazing. Been following you since Queens 2011....would you be interested in coming to play a gig in Columbia, MO, since you’re in St. Louis?

I don't have the patience , and haven't developed the skills to do it well. I usually have a tuning hammer on me, and will "clean up" a note or two if I have to.
