Boogie -Woogie with the great Otis Spann! Spann's father was, according to some sources, a pianist called Friday Ford. His mother, Josephine Erby, was a guitarist who had worked with Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith, and his stepfather, Frank Houston Spann, was a preacher and musician. One of five children, Spann began playing the piano at the age of seven, with some instruction from Friday Ford, Frank Spann, and Little Brother Montgomery. Spann became known for his distinctive piano style. He replaced Merriweather as Muddy Waters' piano player in late 1952 and participated in his first recording session with the band on September 24, 1953. He continued to record as a solo artist and session player with other musicians, including Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf, during his tenure with the group. He stayed with Muddy Waters until 1968. Go check out one of his MANY records! Aside from his own records, Otis played with: With Chuck Berry Rock, Rock, Rock! (Chess, 1956) After School Session (Chess, 1955-57 [1957]) Chuck Berry Is on Top (Chess, 1955-59 [1959]) With Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac in Chicago (Blue Horizon, 1969) With Buddy Guy A Man and the Blues (Vanguard, 1968) With John Lee Hooker Live at Cafe Au Go Go (BluesWay, 1967) With Howlin' Wolf The Real Folk Blues (Chess, 1956-64 [1965]) More Real Folk Blues (Chess, 1953-56 [1967]) With Lonnie Johnson See See Rider (Storyville, 1964) With Floyd Jones and Eddie Taylor Masters of Modern Blues Volume 3 (Testament, 1967) With Muddy Waters Muddy Waters Sings "Big Bill" (Chess, 1960) At Newport 1960 (Chess, 1960) Muddy, Brass & the Blues (Chess, 1966) Mud in Your Ear (Muse, 1967 [1973]) Fathers and Sons (Chess, 1969) With Johnny Shines Last Night's Dream (Blue Horizon, 1969) With the Super Super Blues Band: Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Bo Diddley The Super Super Blues Band (Chess, 1968) With Junior Wells Southside Jam Blues (Delmark, 1970) With Sonny Boy Williamson The Real Folk Blues (Chess, 1947-64 [1966])
I was privileged to see him in concert in London
The kind of music you could listen to for 8 straight hours in a low-down lounge.
There will never be another man like Otis Spann.
I’m obviously in good company here. Otis was an amazing musician, he really added to the Muddy Waters blues band.
I used to have an LP called 'Otis Spann Plays Blues Piano. No vocals, only blues piano. I wish it were still available on CD or download. I'd pay a premium price for that album. Nobody, but nobody, played blues piano like Otis Spann.

And why the hell ISN'T it available??? How the hell can people forget an artist like this? Really shows you how infinitely cynical and trash-centric the American music industry is

First I heard Otis Spann was on the blues trilogy, Chicago the Blues Today! It was a collection of 3 vinyl LPs of different blues performers who were playing around Chicago in the 1960s.

I seen Willie Dixon at the Soup Kitchen bar in Detroit. So many blues artists played his music because he wrote a ton of songs. He was quite the character :-) Peace

It is commonly known that Big Maceo and other piano players took Otis under their wings and taught him to play. Just sayin'.......
