Chuck Berry Introduces Muddy Waters
Chuck Berry Introduces the #Blues #Legend Muddy Waters | Midnight Special 1973
At first Berry's repertoire consisted mainly of Nat "King" Cole and Muddy Waters songs. As soon as he began to develop his skills, Berry broke away from Stevens and Pee Wee, forming his own group, called the Chuck Berryn Combo. Playing around town, Berry gained popularity, playing additional gigs outside of St. Louis in neighboring cities. While visiting Chicago with his high school classmate and long-time friend Ralph Burris, they checked out the club scene. Seeing Howlin' Wolf and Elmore James for the first time on that faithful Friday night, Berry was amazed and "never wanted to leave place where Elmore James was performing." Burris wanted to scope out another act that night though. Muddy Waters was performing at the Palladium on Wabash Avenue. Berry was elated to have the opportunity to witness one of his idles performing. After the show Berry went backstage and spoke with Waters himself, talking of his admiration for the bluesman and asking him for advice on his own career. Waters famous advice was, "Yeah, see Leonard Chess. Yeah, Chess Records over on Forty-seventh and Cottage." Next Monday, Berry drove to 4720 Cottage Grove Avenue, the home of Chess Record Company. In a chance meeting with Leonard himself, Berry agreed to bring Leonard a demo tape. Berry returned by the end of the week, and Chess was amazed that a "hillbilly song" could be written and sung by a "black guy." A recording session was set up for May 21, 1955. The first two sides that Berry cut were, "Ida May" and "Wee Wee Hours." "Ida May" was later renamed "Maybellene." Willie Dixon sat in on the session, playing bass. "Maybellene" went on to reach number one on the Billboard R&B chart. Berry went on to record such classic tunes as "Sweet Little Sixteen," "School Day," "Johnny B. Goode," "Rock & Roll Music,'" and "Roll Over Beethoven." He reached the top of the charts in the late 1950s again with "School Days" in 1957 and "Sweet Little Sixteen" in 1958. On his recordings he teamed up with Willie Dixon throughout the 50s and 60s.

@@00loudog I was a cadet at Castle Heights M.A. in Lebanon. Spent very little time in Nashville. WLAC AM was before FM, and sported 50,000 watts power clear channel and could be heard as far south as Montgomery, Alabama. There were two Blues programs on in sequence. Randy's Record Parade and Ernie's Record Mart. The DJ on Ernie's was a gravel-voiced guy named John Richburg. Both sold mail order 78rpm Blues records It was a wonderful time to be alive.

These damn kids think they know what music is?! I am 44 now and I was 6 when I first heard Howlin Wolf, real name Chester burnett. Right then I knew i was born in the wrong era. This was music. I would give anything now to be at any of is there a performances. Long live the greats, and I hope their music always stays alive

Saw ole muddy in chi town several times small venues packed and tight playing pure musical experience!
Nothing on TV anywhere near this level of cool and great anymore.
I was fortunate enough to see muddy waters live in the early 70's. I've been a huge blues fan ever since
He came to play in Austin and I shook hands with him. It was a nice moment in my life. When it came time to play, he was a serious performer, and he knew how to bring down the house.
Man Chuck was such a mischievous SOB. Just can’t appreciate him the same way after the things that have come to light.

A friend of mine, Craig Eastman and myself went to see Muddy Waters at the original Antone's in Austin Texas around 1975 or 1976 , during intermission a guy goes on stage and invites everyone to his house for a party to honor Muddy Waters and celebrate his birthday, well after the show we drive over to East Austin and park down the street, we sat there asking ourselves if we should go in , finally we knock on the door and when they open it no one was there, but we could see a huge spread of BBQ , ribs , brisket, ham , white bread, potato salad, and corn on the cob, it was $5.00 for all you could eat, we got a big plate and sat down at the table, and these people were probably in their 60s and they were so kind to us, they made these two college students feel like kings , anyway we are stuffing ourselves when in comes Muddy Waters and his band, it seems that he was cousins to the homeowner, then 10 or 15 minutes later in comes Paul Ray and The Cobras with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Denny Freeman, man it was a great night, we just sat and listened to the musicians tell stories , Austin was great back in the 1960s and 1970s
