Old Fish Knife Restoration - Complete Restoration

Today I am restoring this old fish knife. Knife itself is in terrible condition and I had a couple of surprises during recording of this old fish knife restoration. The knife’s shape indicates that this could be an old fisher's knife. I was not able to read any markings on the blade, but after removing the layer of rust I found a weasel stamp and some leathers. Unfortunately I could not read the letters clearly.
I tried to find out more about this old fish knife, but with no luck. It can be that this knife was produced in small quantities or it was just for locals. It would be nice to know more about knife’s history or for what was used for in the past.
I kicked of this old fish knife restoration with disassembling the knife and start grinding the surface rust with my hand cranked grinder. The first surprise was when I discovered that the metal edges on the handle were hollow. They were filled with rust and dirt.
I removed all dirt and rust from this fish knife and start sanding all parts, including the deer’s horn handle. That would be second surprise with this restoration. Sanding the deer’s horn produced awful smell. I could compare it with a smell when you go to the dentist and he is drilling / grinding your tooth. Ohhhh, terrible…
Because of big dents on metal edges on the handle I had to paint them. I first spray them with a primer and afterwards with a black paint. They came out alright. And the last step in this old fish knife restoration was to polish the knife’s blade. As usually I used mine hand cranked grinder with polishing wheel.
Then I started the assembling of this fish knife. I choose to glue it, in this way I will prevent the dirt to coming in in the handle cavities. After drying I cleaned the knife from glue, sharpened it and testet out with an onion. And as a last thing I compared fish knife before restoration and after the restoration.

Hey legends! This fish knife restoration was a challenge in many ways. Sometimes the knife is in terrible condition and it is not certain that the restoration will go smooth. This is an example of that. As a result, fish knife is in better shape than before for sure, but still in rough shape. That is reality, unfortunately. I hope you legends have enjoyed in this restoration video and see you around next week! Warmest regards, Boris @FindFixDonate

The knife came out looking great, I think the patina on the blade gives it character now. Excellent job.

Does look like an old fish filet knife. I use a new one made by Rapal and it is very similar in blade design. Deer antler is some extremely hard stuff to work with. Hard as a rock and yes, it does stink when sanding and cutting it. But fear not, the deer drops them off every spring and starts immediately growing new ones. Thumbs Up!

Yeah, definitely looks like one, it is a bit rigid in my opinion as a filleting knife but who knows. Maybe in earlier days they used it like so. Is it weird combo deer antler for fish knife 🤔? Thanks for watching Gary! Regards Boris
