Machete Restoration - Rust Bluing [Transformation To A Bunka]
Ғылым және технология
During the restoration of the old rusty machete, I also had to make a transformation, so that a machete became a bunka. The special thing about the restoration was that I will protect the new knife from new rust with the help of "Rust Bluing". That is, I use rust to protect the bunka from rust, you can also easily replicate the process. Also, when I remodeled the old machete, I used a needle scaler, sandblasted parts to remove rust, used electrolysis to remove rust, made a new handle out of ebony and bubinga, and more. Please also note that this video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from everyday life!
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ What did I do ?! ◀
The rusty machete was in very poor condition, so I had to rebuild it. After derusting with the needle deruster and with the help of electrolysis, the full extent of the rust became clear, so I had to convert the machete into a bunka knife. To match, I chose a wooden handle made of ebony and bubinga, the shape of which is also based on a bunka. The blade is now protected from future rust by a process called "Rust Bluing". This involves using hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and salt to create a layer of red rust. The blade is then placed in boiling distilled water, which turns the red rust into black rust, which now protects the knife from rust. During the restoration, I had to refrain from removing the pitting, because otherwise nothing would have remained of the knife.
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Needle scaler, laboratory power supply, wire, wood, alligator clips, wire brush, cordless screwdriver, wire attachment, pen, angle grinder, belt grinder, files, grinding jig, saw, marking pen, caliper, immersion heater, hardening furnace, oil, grill thermometer, oven, forging pliers, disc sander, lathe, drill, ruler, pliers, brush, wood glue, screw clamps, sandpaper, compressor, blasting cabinet, blasting material corundum, distilled water, hydrogen peroxide, salt, vinegar, bowls, cotton swabs, glue, linseed oil varnish

For those curious, this blade started life as specifically a billhook machete - note the exaggerated curve at the end. The cutting edge of such a knife would face the same direction as the hook, and was meant for chopping woody plants, mostly for hedging and cutting the side shoots from branches. By transforming it into a bunka (a Japanese kitchen knife which has since been overtaken in popularity by the santoku), Forgotten Shine has effectively flipped the edge to the reverse side of the original manufacture. I do agree with another commenter that the final handle on this one looks uncomfortable to hold. Authentic bunka, and indeed most Japanese cutlery, have a more rounded handle. Even ones that don't, though, have a more ergonomic design than this. While the handle's finish is pretty to look at, it's not very practical. Still, 4/5 video. Who doesn't like a nice restoration/transformation every now and again?

Thank you for your detailed reply! Yes, I theoretically hold the machete upside down on the thumbnail. It is also true that from the back of the machete I made the edge of the bunka, otherwise I would never have had enough material...👍🐢

Yeah it's a kiritsuke knife definitely not a machete. But still looks good.

This is my Favorite Restoration Channel! Great job on the Resto-Mod! The handle would probably not be comfortable in my hand...too blocky. I've been missing "Mr. Turtle", so I'm glad he made an appearance! I'm also glad you protected him when you were quenching the blade. Need him to be around for a long time!!! I LOVE how you Describe Everything that's going on. Just One of the things I love about this channel! Bravo!!!

I watch a ton of restoration videos but I DEFINITELY look forward to yours the most. The first one I saw was your black cleaver episode. You always seem to have the most interesting methods and the tools are always in the worst condition. I appreciate you don't just grind off the rust like other channels I've seen. Great result here, the machete and handle look great!

I know next to nothing about this craft but these videos are always so interesting!!
For those who dont know: > Red rust is Hematite > Black rust is Magnetite Hematite is unstable and water soluable, whereas a patina of Magnetite is very stable.
I watched your video with interest! Well shot and edited close-ups! The restoration work is great, as is the end result! Good luck bro and inspiration!!!

i have to say that i dont love the physical design of the handle- although rounded edges, the overall boxy design is an image that i can physically feel. just a preference and the choice of wood is great as well so i have to say 9/10... nice :)
Such a clever simple idea I went duh, your use of the drill and vise together showed what could be done when you need more than two hands and do not have a bench top grinder, great episode.
