Old English Suffolk accent and dialect, East Anglia (51) "Ga'nu"

In this video explaining the Suffolk accent and dialect, I'm talking about the word/term "Ga'nu". It's a way of saying "going to" but we use in only certain circumstances (which could be confusing). Us here in Suffolk, East Anglia have so many unusual words and phrases, this is just one of them :)

I was born in Leeds to a Spanish dad and a mum from a village in East Anglia. Growing up I spoke English only in Yorkshire dialect but have childhood memories of my maternal family speaking in East Anglian dialect... The way it sounds gives me comfort :)

It's heartening for me to read comments like this, thank you. Accents and dialects really do hold the key to our history and our pasts don't they. I've been to Yorkshire so many times, I love the landscape and villages there. Every time I hear a Yorkshire accent I get taken back to my favourite places :)

Hiya David, thank you. I’m so pleased you’re enjoying my videos. I know I’ve always spoken this way but it’s only been since I started making these videos that I’ve realised how much it’s disappearing elsewhere here in Suffolk.

Thank you Sarah, not a million miles from what we'd say in parts of Yorkshire. During my working life (mainly in Sheffield) there was usually one of the fraternity nicknamed 'Gunner', mainly because he was gunner do dis or gunner do dat (note the Sheffield pronunciation of 'th', - there's no wonder they call em Dee-dah's 🤣)
