Old Cabin Remodel Part 7: This Beam was a Monster - Installing a New Ceiling in an Old House
This was a 4 person job. Inserting massive 2x12 LVL beams and joists into our living room ceiling to help with sag, stability, and roominess in our living room.

I don't know what y'all were so tired for. We didn't sweat a drop watching your video! 🤣 Seriously, though, we've been waiting so long for this and the wait was well worth while. What an amazing job y'all did. So glad it turned out well. Prayers work, don't they? God bless you, your family, and those who helped.
Never underestimate the power and determination of, well, old guys...and not-so-old guys. That ceiling and the new open space looks wonderful. I don't know what your plans are for the ceiling, but putting blocking between those joists will stiffen things up tremendously. Congratulations on a major step checked off the list.
What great help you Dad, Uncle and friend were. It looks strong and stable for supporting the second floor now. Kind of heard a sigh of relief from you at the end of the video. Well done!! Maybe you could make a small shelf with the 4X4 that stood so strong for so long, as a tribute to it.

Excellent job Wes, a little help goes a long way !!😅
Friends and family working together that's the good life.
I was expecting to see a automotive floor jack being used with a 4x4 to lift the joists, but the use of the ratcheting bar clamps was ingenious!

We use what we've got!
When you forced the beam up it moved in the video. Great job.
Excellent job! A good demonstration of the lost art of using a hammer and nails!
There is no better fun than family working together.
I love the playful back and forth with the helpers. Reminds me of my uncles working together.
My, I'm impressed. You have come a long way in proper hammer use. All this building has really brought you a long way. And just your skills in building things has grown also. From pole shed to expanding your pole shed to building your chicken house it was fun watching you grow. If your not carefull you'll be an all around contractor before long. Even our Lord started out as an apprentice carpenter, but He was probably the best before He started preaching. I always wait with anticipation for your next video. God Bless.
The amount of value you can build into a home is amazing. By doing work yourself the improvements pay alot whether you stay or you sell. Its always worth it when you do the work yourself. Well done. KEEP PLUGGING!
Suggest you put some blocking between your new joists. They will assist with any twisting that might occur when you are using fresh felled timber. Maybe, check with a qualified structural engineer for reassurance.. Having said that , it certainly looks like a solid job...Well done to you all...Regards Robin.
Really smart using liquid nails. Can't wait to see the end result lookin great!
Hey Mr. Green Jeans, getting rid of that center post, opens up the whole room to possibilities. That sure did look like a lot of blood, sweat, and man power, with a brief appearance of our Junior Supervisor in the back ground. He's got to make sure all that measuring and work is done correctly, right?? he he he he It looks nice, I can't wait to see what you do with the room when it is ready to redecorate.

Looking forward to it as well !
Structural stability is important! Great job!
It's nice having help to put in heavy beams. Your house is coming along nicely. Looking forward to the next video.
All your preparation paid off. You have such good, reliable family and friends. I am sure that was payback as you are equally supportive to your community.
What your dad called a redneck floor jack, we would call yankee ingenuity. I liked the gluing and screwing of those ceiling joists. With that LVL beam, and the new ceiling joists, that second floor isn't going any where. With that 4X4 gone, the space you've picked up is amazing.

The stability it added to the second floor is really amazing. Yes, it's amazing how much more room we've got now. Crazy how much space a 4x4 post takes up.

@@falllineridge - I can imagine that you used to be able to jump up and down upstairs and feel the motion - that it was much reduced after the beefing up of all the supporting structures!
Awesome job! Make sure you have adequate foundation support under your new beam supports!
Congratulations, Wes. Job well done. I am positive that the final finished product will be awesome. God bless, brother.
Whooo!! I'm sure glad that's over. I was holding my breath the whole time. Now on to safer things!
Amazing what can be accomplished with a good team to work with. Good job, gentlemen.
That was a big job. Good to have family and friends to help out. Great video Wes. Thank you. 👍
You can put a thin domed shim under the 2 x 6’s to raise them up in the middle, then jack, glue and screw the 2 x 8’s against them. Also, if the floor creaks, sags between joists, or is still shaky, you can cut 1” plywood into strips and glue & screw them between the joists for added support. My first floor is hardwood over 1/8” LUAN (!!!!), so I’ve had to deal with this mess for years. Lovely seeing you and your team. I’m a skirt trying to fix things- often completely on my own. Best!
Beam job turned out well, great to have family and friends to help out. Looking forward to when you cap off that beam with decorative boards.
Fabulous work and the house is still standing. Always a relief

Brilliant progress Wes. You must be aching like there’s no tomorrow!! Well done. Take the rest of the day off!👍🤪
You should build something special with the old support post. It deserves a new much easier life.
It's almost unbelievable how much more work remodeling is over new construction. Always good to have help...
Well done sir! Good fellowship revolving around good work that brings glory to God! Love it. Add you some blocking between those joist to keep them from deflecting and it will stiffin that second floor even more! Keep up the great content 🤙
Wow! Good work. Can’t wait for the next installment.
God Bless you all, wonderful to have family and friends around. You did a great job, happy for you!!!!!
Hi Wes. Having that large living room will be great for those really large gatherings of any kind. I guess the hardest part is over. Have good days!

That was definitely a huge hurdle!
You folks did a great job there! It will turn out really nice! Take care and stay safe! Hello to all! God bless!✝️🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My shoulders hurt just watching this. Looks great.
You guys did an incredible job getting all that done in so little a time. Having help makes all the difference in the world. And speaking of help............ Glad you mentioned at the end that Josiah was a friend from church. Honestly........ I was watching and thinking to myself he had to be your brother. Seriously......... You guys look like family.
Wow! You have done a bloody terrific job mate - well done to you and all involved. Look forward to seeing the panels go on and the finished room at the end.
You had great assistants, Wes!! Y'all are doing a professional job on your home!! God bless you and your family! 💕🙏💕👍
Having your Dad, Uncle and a friend to help was huge! I remember a couple decades back replacing my entire roof structure with rafters put in place with a crane. Without the crew and friends to help it would have been impossible so I can completely relate to how you feel right now. Sweat equity is good for the soul. You've earned a couple days off. Well done Wes!
It didnt move... much. That was funny! Good job! 😁

Felicitaciones por tu trabajo a tu equipo y tu gran familia, un abrazo desde Valdivia Chile!!
That looks really good and you and your family is going to have that house for a very long long time to come ......... great job well done .......🎉
👍👍 Hey Wes, great job on that LVL beam installation !! I do have a concern about ceiling joists. Regular deck screws are not designed for lateral load. IF the( new) joist is not carrying the load at the wall then I would go back and use lots of nails to address any problems with screws.I’m not a Carpenter, but I worked with some good ones.
@falllineridge

The new joist is carrying the load at the wall. The end is sitting on top of the top plate and the other end is tied into the LVL beam.

@@falllineridge 👍 awesome! Glad you got some help with all that. Some jobs are just way to much to go it alone. I know you & the wife are glad that is behind you! You will get the ceiling finished in due time.
Nice job Wes should serve well for many years. I don't envy the task though I have certainly been there done that when my kids were young. It is a tough job remodeling but the end reward is worth it. May God continue to bless your family richly.
Missed the opportunity to liquid nail the top of those joists as you put them in, but you can still do it. Liquid nail where the joists come into contact with the flooring above to eliminate squeaks. It will also tie in every single holiday, creating a solid system for support. It'll feel even more stable on the second floor. Try it. You won't regret it.
Nothing like family and friends!
Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourself 🇨🇦
The phrase of the day, "Nail it quick!" 😂❤
So wonderful congratulations on a job wrll done! I know you are so happy. During all our remodels on this house built in 52 the biggest relief was those wall studs and ceiling joists. Once those were done it felt like smooth sailing. I know your wife and kids are thrilled!!
The remodel is looking great. It’s always nice to have friends and family that are willing to lend a helping hand. Also glad to see a cameo appearance from little man. Always love the interaction between you and him and his eagerness to be involved in whatever daddy is doing. Stay safe, GOB BLESS and see ya on the next one.
Y'all done an excellent job thank goodness you had the help.
Wow! A lot of work! Looks good! 👍! Thanks for sharing!
It’s like when a welder gets a nice bead laid down “that ain’t goin anywhere”
I'm exhausted from just watching. I can't work over my head like you guys were doing. Age has it's benefits I guess:)

You are so blessed to have Josia, your uncle, and Dad. I loved hearing their jesting. The best of the best. God bless and stay safe.
Since you retired the 4x4 post from the living room, you should use it for something like a memento somewhere around your property. You should be able to find a good use for it! Something like holding a bird house or a sign or something? Or you could just burn it.🤣
I new Bill was a man of many talents but didn't know he was also a youtube movie star.
Well done. You will enjoy the open living area for many years. Good to have reliable help to sped the project.
Way to go, Team FLR! Nicely done! It's difficult going behind and fixing someone else's work that's made even more difficult when that work was done by your father! 😉 Great work!
Really pleased to see you are making great progress !!
As much as what you are doing is a lot of work, I can tell you enjoy it. You had a great crew of relatives and a friend to help. The finished job is worth the work involved. What a great video for someone who would want to tackle such a project. It shows what amount of work is involved. Once again what a great video. Keep up the good work.
Nice work Wes, not only is it hard work but there is a tremendous amount of stress involved with it being your own house which is about to come down on your head. Ever see what a cast iron pan does when its dropped on a fresh egg? Great video thumbs up.
Awesome progress!!
Looks so good!
Great job 4 man master team.
Wow , ...just wow the hard work that went into that. This is amazing and it's so endearing to watch you and your family work together one day maybe you and your little boy will be working alongside of his little cabin remodel. Thank you for taking the time and sharing all this with us. Each and everyone of you please stay safe. Phenomenal job !

Nice build, I believe you got'ter hoss!

I won't say I hate something because that's bad and mostly unGodly but, I extremely loath sharpening chainsaw blades. Lol! I'm happy you figured out how to keep that room BIG! Blessings.

Tres bonne solution simple et rationelle dans sa realistion bravo
hello fall line ridge it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy
You guys got alot done. Would like to see more done on the cabin.
You may need to buy a small sledgehammer for this very project. Stay safe.
God is good! Good family, good friends, good job! 👏🏻
I hope you kept the olde 4x4 that held your house up and can find a creative way to repurpose it in your home.
Find a new task for that 4x4 post. Flag pole or anything you can think of. Mark the date on it the day it was used if your dad can tell you and when it was removed. This will be a great conversation piece.
Looks great maybe some cross bracing between the joist is all you need?
I lived in farm housing on a horse breeding farm - the one house I lived in was built in the 1700s the upper floor was held up by a floor jack - in the one bedroom you could put marble on the floor and it would literally roll to the windows with no help
Smoked chicken is good. Pork chops, slaw, taters and corn would have been totally "uptown"! Oh, Use that 4x4 for an accent piece in the house. (place of honor and all that). "Redneck jack"hahahahah
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼
WHAT A VIDEO 😮
Nothing about that was easy. Lots of hard work.
