Building a Homestead Butchering Station
Putting a sink and table in the shed to help with butchering chickens. I plan on using this setup to butcher our Cornish Cross, pasture raised, backyard meat birds soon.

Is it Ceramic or Enamel?? Big difference and there are OTC Coatings for Enamel, not sure of the names...Glad you thought of that because I was hoping you'd recoat it...There's stuff for tubs you can probably use and it'll last till Yeshua comes back! Good luck!!

Wow! That is a heck of a good price for a beast of a machine.
You should saw those burls off of that and put them up for wood turners they pay good money for good solid ones
To re-cover those nicks and bad spots on your 'new' sink, try "Rustoleum' applicance white enamel. Lightly sand the area and coat twice. Does a nice job.
I lol’d when you threw the meat grinder instructions in the trash. That’s so me 🤣
If you have good draining soil, dig a sump pit, fill with gravel and filter cloth and run your sink drain to it. As for the sink repairs, a clear epoxy should do it. Anything that would be food safe and easy to clean.

Nice butchering work station. Don't know if you fish much, but that would sure make a great fish cleaning station also.
Hi Wes. The chickens are not going to mind what the sink looks like. Remember the plumber's putty when you get the drains out. Have good days!
Those baskets at the bottom of the sink are very easy to replace, and they're inexpensive. They sell ceramic touch-up bottles. Thanks for the video.
There isn't anything you can't do - so impressed!! That's going to be so nice for all of your meat processing!! You're making your home & farm better every day! Great job, Wes! I'm so glad you started your channel! God bless you and your family! 🙏💗🙏
Good edition under the shed. Will keep you kitchen cleaner and easier to clean up.
One goid tip for grinding meat, keep it very cold. Grinding causes heat and the fats will start to melt and everything gets gooey if it isn't nice and cold to start with.

Wes - you probably have already checked, BUT - if you can get the limping pig to stand still long enough to check her hoof and see if she has something wedged or stuck between the hooves. Great DIY chicken cleaning station!!!
Love those old sinks! Looking forward to your processing videos.
Brother there is nothing wrong with your setup. It might be crude but it will work great and will be there when you are gone. I learned a long time ago that there is a long way and a lot of money between what's pretty and what works.
All that sink needs now is some chickens to process or some fish to clean ... and maybe optional drains. Nice job and another great video. God bless.
A great day when you upload
We bought an electric meat grinder about 2 years ago for out deer hamburger and love it. We were using a 1940 hand grinder and it took all day to grind a small amount. We can do a 180 lb deer in about 2 hours with this machine
That grappler certainly earns it’s keep. Between logs, stumps, pulling and knocking down saplings and brush, holding the planks and boards from the sawmill...yeah, like you said when you first bought it, should have done that sooner (if you knew just how handy it was going to be.).

Rust oleum bathtub epoxy works really well and ages well as long as the water isn’t too hard. It stains easier than a new bathtub but the stains still seem to come out pretty easy
❤ That sink will come in real handy.
For the drain all you need to do is to use 3" or 4" pvc drain pipe, with a 90 degree elbow and a tee to a reducer of about 1-1/2" or to be on the safe side a 2" outlet. Then dig a small dry well a few feet from the shed and Bob's your uncle you're done. The drain does not need to be sealed like it is in the house all you really need is a fancy gutter. Great video Wes thumbs up.
Another great update thanks Wes! Keep 'em coming! Stay safe & well - Dave. 👍👍
I love all of your videos. They are so relaxing but I also feel like Im learning a lot about so many different things that I have no experience in. Also the filming quality is really good as well which makes watching that much more enjoyable:)
Great set-up! You have enough room underneath the make shelves to store your meat processing equipment, too!

Good video, thanx for re-using that sink basin and not cutting into your support posts. Home Depot and Lowes sells tub and sink refurbishing kits that I have used successfully, but the chemicals are probably not safe for Food handling. Do some research on the subject. The chickens will NOT know the pipe is crooked, LOL.😃
Wes - for your drains, take some PVC pipe couplers, heat the ends up and screw into the sink drains - it will make their own threads and perfectly match the sink drains. Then you can plumb it into a holding tank so you don't have to run a proper drain.
@ozrob76

Great idea! The 'chicken water' could then be used as fertiliser for the veggie garden- much better use for it than just goin on the grass 😃
for the drain - just get a 4 inch pipe, place horizontal. Cut holes to go over the existing holes, and reduce it to a side "drain" system that just puts it into a barrel or bucket or off to the side somewhere. Doesn't need to be "sealed" pipe, just a trough to get it away from the sink and into something else.
You can go to your local hardware store to get the baskets for about $10 and the other kit for drain is probably about the same price
Homax 3157 Tough As Tile Epoxy Enamel Spray Paint, is what I used on my Bath tub. Lasted for years,STILL going.
When he said cheap way of making a drain system I was thinking a wagon with two 5 gal buckets and glued on funnels to the drains. Pull it to the woods with the handle and dump out. 😂😂😂 I am all for super cheap.😅
My two cents for what it's worth: 1. I was going to recommend new basket drains for the sink. They are not expensive. That would give you a sealed drain system and not attract insects to your discharge point. It would allow you to pipe waste water to some type of underground system to keep the blood and other water underground. It would also better allow you to plug the basins when needed with common sink drain strainers. 2. The sink I assume is not ceramic, but porcelain. I would be surprised if it is ceramic. With that said, I have patched porcelain chips on appliances several times with run-of-the-mill porcelain liquid patch materials. It looks rough when patched but I have never had one fail. I usually just get whatever is available at appliance stores or big box stores. What I bought has always come in a small bottle with an included brush. Very similar to fingernail polish. As I said, I have never got it to brush out smooth and seamless. It just is what it is. Probably operator error. lol Better than rust for sure and was always functional and lasted well. I would not recommend any kind of rattle-can type spray material. 3. That area, if eventually screened in, would be perfect for processing your honey without so many bees following you to your processing area.

That Vevor looks like a decent website good prices too which makes a change these days
For the drain, start with an oversized piece of pvc to go over the two drain ports. Since it won't be under pressure, it should allow the water to just fall through the hole. You can reduce it down below and just let it drain outside the processing area.
@ron.v

I hope Wes reads your comment. A master plumber once reminded me that drain lines should never leak since they're not under pressure. He said the only reason would be if they're stopped up or poorly fitted in the first place. I was thinking what you suggested, that any old PVC should work as long as it's bigger than the drain port. Doesn't have to fit tightly.
I believe that if you wire wheel those spots on your sink really well...then apply POR19 rust preventer on the bare metal and then apply any top appliance paint(Rust-Oleum) to these areas it will last for years. Made many repairs myself like this and has not let me down yet...👍👍👍✔️👀😎
I would also put some hose ends on the spigot so you have control rinsing out the chickens

Replace the baskets - they are inexpensive. Then run a PVC line to a barrel (30 gallon or larger) with a bunch of holes that is buried in the ground. This will work for infrequent use Looks like a great setup. Thanks
I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that gets PVC glue all over my hands lol. Nothing wrong with that for a chicken station. Y’all have a great weekend and God bless.
Your videos are so well put together. I can second your comment about burying pipes in shallow earth. So viewers will know, you and I live less than 100 miles apart. Anything just inches below ground never freezes, ever! If you can borrow a back hoe, dig a pit, put in two 55 gal plastic drums, poke them fool of holes and fill them and the surrounding hole with gravel. Run your drain to that. I did that for my washing machine and it worked for years. It was still working when I sold the house. You can also just lay a 4 in. plastic drain line about 50 ft. Make sure it has at least an inch of fall every 8 ft., cover the pipe with filter cloth, and it should work for years. Be careful not to put too much fall in the drain line or it will pool up at the end. Too little fall and it won't flow. The meat grinder looks like a steal. If people have priced high quality stuff like that, they know the price is great. I'm looking forward to you telling us more about it soon as you learn more. Keep up the good work and God bless.
Greetings from Lizella. Enjoy your channel.
Drain Idea : get a 3 inch rubber coupler with hose clamps and attach to another 3 inch pvc pipe so you can put an RV sewer hose and angle it into the grass. just an idea
Good job Wes 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourselves, be safe, and healthy 🇨🇦
Wes hang a 5 gallon bucket under the drain. Cut and put a water hose adapter on the bottom of the bucket and send the hose out in the yard ...move it around some you would get a mudhole ...when you are done roll it up and keep it in the bucket
I think you did a great job on the sink.
Very nice job
A little trip to hardware store for 2 new strainer assemblies, some waste pipe and fittings to divert wast water away safely should do the temporary processing table. The chickens and pigs will be handily processed through this set up.
Nice heavy sink and work station. I hope you get some good feedback in the comments, I have several old iron sinks and enamel pots and pans I've collected over the years. They have chips in the enamel finish too. Congratulations on your new meat grinder, that'll be handy for you.

Homax makes a reglazing kit for enamel. Never used it, but it is available.
Use 4" corrugated pipe wedge up to existing drain and 90 off underground to wherever you want. Easy to clean if clogged
If you have the equipment to dig a hole the size off a 55 gallon drum, then cut the bottom out of the drum, place it in the hole somewhat under ground level and pipe the sink drain with a pee trap to drum bung hole. Use two drums if you think its needed. A simple septic/drain field.
For sink drain dig a fairly deep hole 3feet deep 2 feet wide get a five gallon bucket and drill 1/4 in holes all over it the more holes the better. Put the bucket in the home you dug fill the rest of the hole with gravel rocks about a inch in size, up to the edge of the bucket. Get the lid for the five gallon and run the sink drain plumbing to it. Fill the rest of the hole with dirt. It’ll work for a while but might clog up every few years.
Bought some bathtub/sink repair materials from Lowes. Works great at fixing chips like that, and once it sets up, you will barely notice it. Noticed someone mentioned a "dry well drainage pit," filled with crushed stone, Short run of pipe from your drains, and you're all set.
We used marine grade clear epoxy and added the color its been ten years and it awsome cant even tell where the chip or crack was once and done
I seen someone clean a Vintage Sink like yours with Hydrogen Peroxide. Looked new. Those old sinks are pretty. We have one in our deer camp. You'll see a few forsale during Peaches to Beaches in the Spring. You set up is simple and serves the purpose.
keep up the good work
Hey Wes! Nice use of space for this project. As for being temporary? Another Wes we watch says, "Its only temporary if it doesn't work." (Watch Wes Work). This should last you for years before needing an update. As for your drain? I'd suggest just using 5 gallon buckets with lids. Swap one out when it's full (of bloody, fatty water) and go dump it on your garden - daily. If you use containers much bigger, they can get to smelling pretty bad before being dumped. Putting in a small pump and a long drain line will concentrate the waste and the smell. And don't forget to spray down that porous wood countertop after getting blood on it. You're gonna love this new tool. Good job!

Or he could sand it down and get it real smooth, then seal it. And do something to seal the cracks between the boards. that is where it runs the risk of having "stuff" run down in between the boards, never to be really rinsed or cleaned out .... a nasty scenario for breeding nasty bacteria that has no place around meat processing. Would have for a build up of salmonella and who knows what else and have meat processed there getting contaminated and someone getting sick from it. I've never gotten food poisoning from tainted food, but my sister and my mom did, and it wasn't a pretty picture. It was bad enough for them both that they got a ride to the ER with lights and sirens the whole ride.

@@falllineridge I look forward to seeing the finished (final - ha ha) project. Final project. Yeah right. There will always be another project ..... RIGHT? 😄
For the drain use a PVC bell to go around the drain and silicone sealer.
Try some rain spouting to drain the sink - tack it on the underside of sink - 😊
Dig a hole with your backhoe large enough for a 55 gallon plastic drum. Bury the drum fill it with 3/4 Blue Stone and drain it into that. The Stone will filter the water cleany into the soil.
Most home improvement centers have a re-glazing kit. Homax is the brand I've seen.
I think that sink is porcelain, so if so there are products you can put on that will protect the chipped areas. It’s not hard, but there’s a lot of prep steps to take to do it right.
An easy fix for your drain. Use a 55 gallon drum for a septic tank and then set up a small leach field. People have been doing this for vacation cabins for a long time
dig a hole add gravel into bottom take a barrel put holes into bottom, dig a trench to barrel and plum a pipe from sink to the barrel, cover with rock and dirt instant fix to get rid of the sink water.
Maybe if you had a one low spot in your outdoor water system, you could put in a drain there to protect yourself against the 100 year freeze.
Hey Mr. Green Jeans. I have seen (On Home Town) when they repurposed old sinks, they would clean the surfaces, then use a (paint roll) with liquid porcelain paint, and the surfaces turn brand new and useable sinks/tubs. I think that chain roll got away from our Junior Supervisor, it might have pulled him up into the ceiling if he hung on too long !! He's getting pretty tall now. Hope that helps.

good video and job that wood will be fun to split . as for sink they use to sell kits to redo them they cost a lot back then i think there may have been 3 steps to them i cheaped out and used rust proof paint. for drain you could just buy the drain and trap kit and run it into black plastic drain and roll it back up after each use. take care, be safe and well.
I had a sink setup similar to that once, but for fish. Drainage was just black poly drain field pipe ran out about 50 feet.
The expression on your face when you were tightening up that spiket suggest you were turning it pretty hard!!! Was funny though.
replacement basket strainers are pretty cheep and easy to replace. Good job
Funnels for drains. Cut the narrow bottoms off the funnels. Jb weld PVC pipe to funnels. Ta da drains
Take a half tube with the ends capped off and just make a hole where you can make a connection for it to drain away somewhere. Otherwise you have a nice setup 🙂.
What about a sump pump hose connected to a coupler under the sink. When not in use curl it up , slip a rope through it on a hook on post. 😊
Far as drain goes just replace what's there with new cheap stuff cross them over like you would under the bottom with a elbow trap and use some house to run it out as far as you want.if it was me I'd bury a 10 20 gal barrel like a septic tank and run a wide kinds deep field line with about 3 or 4 sections of field drain pvc all you'll ever need. Personally I'd leave it there use it all year round on chicken pigs fish wild game hand washing etc.
All that’s left is the chicken. I like using “Pre-owned” stuff. It saves so much money and waste
Looking good - couple of comments... what about hot water supply/heater... and you could probably just use a rattle can to spray the sink where they are looking worn/rusted. Blessings to you and the family
You could just put a big plastic tub under the sink and then put a drainage pipe from that out onto the grass.
Great thumbnail.
Those old farm sinks like yours around here sale on the antique markets for 4 to $500.00.... I think i'd preserve that one and get a cheap fiberglass one for the chicken processing...

MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼
Since you have a tractor with a bucket. Why don’t you try just making a gutter system from the sinks to the edge of the table and let it drain into the bucket of the front end loader. When the bucket gets full drive it out to the wood line and dump it. It will get the nasty water away from the shed without pipe. Making some kind of septic next to the shed is going to stink after a day or two, unless you spend the money and do it correctly. Good luck and thanks for sharing.
Put a 4” around those drains and secure them some how. Than just use reducers from there.
They have spray cans of appliance epoxy that should do the trick.
