The Ol Pejeta's Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary cares for chimps that are not releasable into the wild. Mostly they were orphaned due to poaching for bushmeat or intended for the pet trade. All come from a traumatic background and are mostly unrelated. Some were offered to the Jane Goodall Chimp Sanctuary but were refused because they were not related and would interfere with the study of wild chimps. That's how Ol Pejeta was approached by Jane Goodall to create a sanctuary for them. Some of the chimps had been kept as pets for a number of years before arriving at Ol Pejeta. Chimpanzees are not native to Kenya and so they are not allowed into the general wildlife population of Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
