Messi The Puma is a Big Ol’ House Cat

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Meet Messi the Puma, now unlike most big cats that exist in the wild or in zoos, this big cat, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment in Russia.
Messi was born in captivity at a zoo in Russia, but suffered from various health problems at just three months old. During his stay at the zoo, Messi was kept in a very small enclosure and was malnourished, which caused him to develop muscle weakness, rickets which is a degenerative bone disease and a urinary tract infection.
The zoo decided that because pumas were not native to Russia, they could not simply release it into the wild, and because of it’s illnesses, that prevented him from living in another zoo or animal sanctuary. So they had planned to euthanize him.
A couple by the name of Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev, heard about the sickly cub, and after talking with other puma breeders and learning everything about the maintenance and care of the animal, they took a leap of faith and approached the zoo about adopting it. And to their surprise, the zoo agreed!
Fun Fact: Despite their large size, cougars are actually more closely related to house cats than they are to other large cat species like jaguars and tigers.
Cougars, also commonly referred to as puma or mountain lion, and are members of the Felidae family.
Pumas are native to the Americas, and they are the largest feline species on these continents, with males being up to 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long from head to tail and weighing up to 100 kg (220 lb).Messi is unlike most cougars, he is about half the size of a normal adult male because of his health conditions. The owners also point out that he is very gentle and loving.
Thanks for watching.

Suuure. Guys, it’s not a coincidence that a bunch of random civilians have wild big cats living in their homes, in Russia. Same with bears and other wild animals/exotic “pets.” And they all have the same story…. A zoo or circus gave up a cub for some health/space reason. Smh, they don’t give up cubs, for a ton of reasons. They can make a ton of money off those cubs and they don’t lack the resources to take care of them. You’d have to be totally gullible and/or completely uninformed to believe their reoccurring stories about why a wild animal is always given up as a cub, living with random people who are somehow capable/certified, in their apartment/home that’s a totally inadequate environment 🤦🏻‍♀️ Y’all, they buy these animals from breeders, which are torn from their mothers after birth, so they can imprint on humans, and (even though you think it’s cute) it’s not a healthy/good life for the animal. Plus they make money off people that watch their videos on social media and want to “donate” to their Patreon account, or in another format, to pay for food/meds. Please don’t continue to support it and please don’t think, “I want one! It’s so cute.” You fell for it.

Well, animal activists are not globally hated for no reason. They do good things for some animals but they also tend to be extremists who see everything in black and white and they tend to forget that humans are animals too. We changed the world because we evolved a capacity to do so, just like every other animal evolved on this planet; that doesn't mean we're meant to be isolated from them and that we can't interfere with nature at all, even in loving ways. Just because some animals are exotic doesn't mean that they shouldn't receive affection or that they absolutely have to live in the wild and obey to their every instincts, with no interaction with us. We used to be hunters as well but most people aren't, now. Does it mean that we're not following our own instincts and that we should drop people on remote islands to live in tribes? How is it better for animals to die in the wild rather than being taken care of by humans? They have feelings like us, they like to receive affection, and to play and they can get attached to someone just like we, and other pets, can. We improved our living conditions using our brains; I don't see why we shouldn't apply it to some animals the same way, when necessary. This couple's motivation was noble and I'm glad they did what they did. I personally would be too scared to do it but when some people are able to, when the animal's been taken care of by humans since it was a baby and if it doesn't try to attack people, I'm not against it. Not all animals are treated equal, even by animal protection groups. I brought a sick baby squirrel at the SPCA once (the animal protection agency where I live). They didn't even try to help it, they didn't examine the animal or give it food, or medication or care, they just put it in a cardboard box as soon as we got there, that they threw in the basement, and they let it suffer and die there. Their reasonning was that they didn't have the time and ressources (a vet) and they had more important things to deal with than a sick squirrel that they probably couldn't help. I understand being busy and having too many animals to take care of, but they didn't even try for 2 minutes and they literally thew the box on the floor, after we spent a few days feeding it and trying to take care of it. Humans are what they are. There are good and bad people everywhere. The couple in this video are good people.

Messi seems like an extraordinarily kind, gentle soul. Like a house cat, he's only ever known life in captivity and being reliant upon humans since he was a tiny baby. Look at the way he interacts with people, he's very similar to a housecat while indoors and a common dog outdoors. He isn't a threat to anybody. Releasing him into the wild would be a death sentence.

It’s an “exotic”animal, meaning it should have really been in an exotic atmosphere to begin with, hence why it got health problems and had recessive issues. It’s great these people are giving it a loving home but technically it’s own genetics have been stunted in a sense. If it was fully developed you would need a few acres to maintain keeping an exotic animal like that with a close connection. African tribes have achieved the same thing beyond just centuries due to the vast amount of land. They can communicate with a lost of different animals within the cat family and beyond tbh.

It’s so cute.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ smh another one bites the dust

There's no such thing, but dont get me wrong... i don't give a flying fuck if these people are in danger, in fact, i'm rooting for the animal to go crazy on them, so maybe one day people learn something, but i hope not soon since i like to hear new histories about idiots who put wild animals into theyr houses and got killed by them.. it's hilarious =D.

John Harrison you can see quite clearly that it’s not going to “end badly”. This cat is obviously very docile and friendly, as many hand-raised cats are. And many house cats are not aggressive in the slightest. That doesn’t make them “like dogs”, it makes them like cats. Cats can be extremely affectionate and docile. Cat behavior covers the full spectrum, ranging from extremely dangerous and ferocious to being very gentle, friendly and docile with not a hint of aggression. There is no one-size-fits-all. Clearly this puma has a lovely, predictable temperament and presents no danger. Additionally, he’s not that big and still much smaller than a lion or tiger.

I’ve been watching Messi videos for years. People need to understand that Alexander doesn’t forget for a minute that Messi is a cougar and that he could be dangerous. The difference is messis temperament and ability to interact with other animals and people. Alexander only lets his guard down when he’s at home with Messi, in a controlled environment. Messi is just different. It’s like that once in a lifetime dog that you’ll never forget. Never really had to train him he just sort of understood you. That’s the way I see Messi, minus the training part. Haha. I’m sorry but anyone saying that he should be in a preserve or some other “cage”, I think that that cat would be dead inside of a month if he were to leave Alexander and his wife’s care. Sorry I don’t remember her name. It’s not to take anything away from her, she’s 100% committed to Messi as Alexander is. Without their dedicated care Messi wouldn’t even have survived.

There are so many hate comments on these videos it's absurd. People don't seem to understand that this cat was rescued and it was either this or death. The cat seems to love it regardless but liberals gunna liberal so...

@@kinkane5566 Totally agree. The people writing the hateful comments have no clue that this cat just can't be dropped off in a refuge and "set free." Or can imagine that he is happy in his home. Some of the comments are so mean as well. One person wrote that messi should have been euthanized, rather than be tortured the way he is--living with a loving family, getting medical care, lots of room to play, getting so much love--yes what a tortuous life.

Cheetahs and pumas really are closer to the house cats in terms of behavioral cues as opposed to the apex predator cats. They purr, slow blink, meow for basic communication, don’t roar, and so on. Given enough generations, they could probably be domesticated.

@@YdrakarI believe it has something to do with the shape of their palate, some big cats straight up cannot roar whatsoever and the ones that can roar do not meow. In fact house cats are really not that much genetically different from some wildcats, Savannah cats are cats bred with African wildcats (I believe) because of house similar their genetic makeup is. Many of the traits in house cats are found in the smaller wild cats too. If someone really tried I imagine they could domesticate some wild cats in only a few generations.

@@Ydrakar The only issue and reason that doesn't happen nowadays is for the following. 1, they're endangered. 2, The traits of a house cat are not so cute when they're nearly 8x the weight. 3, They require a ton of extra care that requires knowledge, dedication, and consistency which most people suck at. Don't get me wrong, I've love to have one of this big fellas, but I also fancy not having my leg pulled out from under me because I walked past them to go to the bathroom and they pawwed at my foot. My cat, luna, does that, it's cute. If a puma did that, I'm going down on the mat lmao.
