Messi The Puma is a Big Ol’ House Cat
Ойын-сауық
Meet Messi the Puma, now unlike most big cats that exist in the wild or in zoos, this big cat, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment in Russia.
Messi was born in captivity at a zoo in Russia, but suffered from various health problems at just three months old. During his stay at the zoo, Messi was kept in a very small enclosure and was malnourished, which caused him to develop muscle weakness, rickets which is a degenerative bone disease and a urinary tract infection.
The zoo decided that because pumas were not native to Russia, they could not simply release it into the wild, and because of it’s illnesses, that prevented him from living in another zoo or animal sanctuary. So they had planned to euthanize him.
A couple by the name of Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev, heard about the sickly cub, and after talking with other puma breeders and learning everything about the maintenance and care of the animal, they took a leap of faith and approached the zoo about adopting it. And to their surprise, the zoo agreed!
Fun Fact: Despite their large size, cougars are actually more closely related to house cats than they are to other large cat species like jaguars and tigers.
Cougars, also commonly referred to as puma or mountain lion, and are members of the Felidae family.
Pumas are native to the Americas, and they are the largest feline species on these continents, with males being up to 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long from head to tail and weighing up to 100 kg (220 lb).Messi is unlike most cougars, he is about half the size of a normal adult male because of his health conditions. The owners also point out that he is very gentle and loving.
Thanks for watching.

Suuure. Guys, it’s not a coincidence that a bunch of random civilians have wild big cats living in their homes, in Russia. Same with bears and other wild animals/exotic “pets.” And they all have the same story…. A zoo or circus gave up a cub for some health/space reason. Smh, they don’t give up cubs, for a ton of reasons. They can make a ton of money off those cubs and they don’t lack the resources to take care of them. You’d have to be totally gullible and/or completely uninformed to believe their reoccurring stories about why a wild animal is always given up as a cub, living with random people who are somehow capable/certified, in their apartment/home that’s a totally inadequate environment 🤦🏻♀️ Y’all, they buy these animals from breeders, which are torn from their mothers after birth, so they can imprint on humans, and (even though you think it’s cute) it’s not a healthy/good life for the animal. Plus they make money off people that watch their videos on social media and want to “donate” to their Patreon account, or in another format, to pay for food/meds. Please don’t continue to support it and please don’t think, “I want one! It’s so cute.”

generally i would agree with the activists. I am a strong advertiser against zoos personally. I think the only decent ways of saving animals are release or wildlife parks with huge enclosures or having animal emabassadors. But this is an exception. Messi would have not survived in any onther way. Sasha and his wife are true heroes. They also took in 2 cheetas, one of which sadly passed away. I think they are great people and i wish them all the best.

The fact that a puma is domesticated, follows commands, goes to training with other dogs and doesn't claw at them says quite a bit about the positive care.

That is truly a unique story! I could not believe my eyes when he was getting his claws trimmed, how relaxed he was was unbelievable! As far as the animal rights activists go I think Messi is happier where he is than in the wild. I've seen some fairly tame Wildcat stories but this just takes the cake! Years ago when I was in high school I took on a summer job as a Keepers helper at the local Zoo and got acquainted with a white tiger they had on exhibit named Kalif. I was allowed to scratch him on the head and make him purr, that was a rush hearing a big tiger purr like a house cat! Something I'll never forget!

@John Harrison Again cats are different than dogs but it's the same idea here. I've been scratched pretty bad while playing with my dog and she even could tell it hurt and immediately went out of play mode right when it happened. The same accidents can happen with large cats the difference is the strength and damage they can cause especially since their claws don't retract. It's the accidents when there's a risk but you risk injury or death everytime you get in a car.

I’ve followed Messi for years and agree this is the most well-rounded and respectful video of his story that I’ve seen. His owners are incredible people, and as for Messi, he’s very intelligent, but also a total goof ball. He’s a 3 year old child in a puma costume, and I think he knows he’s living the good life. Well done guys on giving this family the credit they deserve! This is no Tiger King scenario for the haters.

@deprofundis if ppl keep breeding this tree of domesticated wild animals breed, the descendants for generations to come will eventually cease to be wild, and domesticated. Say 1500 years to come. Just like wolf, and wild cats. I'm definitely not into stray lion on the street, so in the end we need to be responsible that starts with dogs and cats (domestics) of today. In fact there are still ppl abandoning even exotic breed of cat, bcs they're "not cute" anymore, some just let it suffer on the street, some survived and breed, hence stray problems.

To be honest, given the circumstances of Messi, I think the couple adopting him was in his best interest; especially when they went the whole nine yards to make sure his every need was met, from Messi having his own space to enrichment, and it definitely shows.
This guy does more for wildlife awareness than alot of “animal charities”
I've watched their story from almost the beginning. They didn't do this for attention or for views or likes. They genuinely love Messi and have given him a tremendous life.
The fact that they were willing to actually put him in a dog training program to help teach him obedience really shows their dedication to making sure they care for him properly. Not to mention they moved into a bigger home! I dont think Messi could have been with anyone better than this lovely couple, everything they do for him is with love 💙
I feel so happy for my favorite animal- the Puma. He's living the best life he could ever live, and he's even travel-sized :D! I'm glad not only dogs and house cats get love, but also this big guy :).
That clip where he's at the dog training school is adorable. He's like a kid who feels awkward his first day at a new school.

Messi is an absolutely beautiful creature. The love it shows for its humans brings tears to my eyes.

@KingDoms Kingdom1985 true my guy it makes me feel kinda jealous since I want to take care of an animal (or more specifically a friend) that I adore unconditionally.
Messi is an incredible animal who's gratitude and love is without question amazing. The couple that care for Messi should set up a shelter perhaps to help other species, because they have done an unbelievable job in bringing this exotic beauty back to health. This type of love from a puma is priceless. My uncle had a pet puma in Mexico who died unfortunately when they decided to declaw him and the vetinarian did not calculate the amount of anesthetic properly. Seriously this was a very sad event & a great loss that my uncle always regretted. Best Wishes to Messi and his loving family.
Messi seems happy, well cared for, and in good hands. I don’t think this is unethical at all. Very cool to know that it’s possible for all animals to form a connection with humans.
i watched a lot of older videos of messi in the apartment, but havent seen any recently. normally, wild animals dont make good pets, but messi is an exception. i think he knows that his death was imminent, and the care that he has been given by a normal couple makes the relationship so unique
Time seemed to have froze for a few minutes while watching this video. Kitty is well aware they saved her life, and look at the love she gives the world in return. It's remarkable.
I can't emphasise enough how badly I need a puma sleeping next to me like my cat, they seem so soft and I love their cute faces
That cat behaves just like any house cat that loves its owner. You can really see it when they're laying on the couch together. The way he flexes and retracts his paw/claw is a sign of content. It's basically a kneading response.

@Soul Flame This is wrong. A house cat is domesticated, whereas a puma is not. Therefore, the potential danger is not down to personality of the animal but to the fact a puma is a wild animal and a house cat is not. The example shown here is an anomaly - but the potential danger of this “house puma” is still there because it is not a domesticated species.
Soul Flame
11 ай бұрын
@deprofundis Yes, I agree with you, I did look it up and you're right. You can correct me if I'm wrong on what I'm going to say. My point was that "house cats" are just as wild as a Puma is. For example: my cat listens to the house rules. One day a dove flew in my living room by accident and I can assure you there were no house rules anymore for my cat. All he could think about was catch the dove, nothing else existed. So the idea that a "house Puma" still has it's instincts is equally true for a "simple house cat". What makes the animal more dangerous is not just the instincts but the size. My cat can't pull me appart because it's too small while a puma can. It's the same with dogs: a poodle can't pull me apart but a rottweiler can. Same thing: it's it's size and strength that makes it potentially dangerous. In the case of Messy, it's not just the fact that it's a puma, it's also his personality and the love that makes Messy suitable for being a "house Puma". My mother has a cat that hisses and scratches to any one that comes too close except her boyfriend, he is the ONLY one that can pet her. She is not dangerous because she is too small for that. If she was the size of a Puma, she would be extremely dangerous to have as a domestic animal. So the discussion if a puma, or other wild animals, as a pet is dangerous or not is also a matter of personality, and how the relation is. Nature is full of examples of strange friendships between animals, like a bird that sits all his life on the back of a horse. The day the bird died, the horse was very sad. Or a dog in a shelter that shied away from the other dogs and prefered to play with the goats and befriended them. The dog started to show behaviours of goats, and the goats started to show behaviours of a dog. That are just a few of the many examples that exist. What do you think?
I have been watching Messi and his parents for several months now. He is truly an amazing cat, he has a sense of humor, is curious and quite intelligent. His parents are extremely good to him and you can tell that Messi is aware that he is truly loved. God bless Sasha and Masha for taking a leap of faith adopting Messi and for sharing their story with all of us!🐱❤✌️

This goes without saying but obviously it depends on the cat. Each one has a different personality. We believe one of our cats is feral and she’s still adorable, but must be treated like a queen or she’ll wreck you. I would be terrified if she were Messi’s size 😂
They have done an excellent job with Messi. The relationship Messi has with his human family is very awesome! I’m glad they took Messi to give him a chance at life!❤
Messi belongs right where he is. With his family💚
it's great to see that people are able to make the right adjustment for such an amazing cat and give it a loving home.
Knowing about pumas and felines in general I can get that it wouldn’t be impossible to get them tamed to an extent. The level these people seem to have Messi at truly makes me think they’re his saviors. He probably looks at them, and alexandr moreover as the people who took him in when he really wasn’t living a good life, and they saved him. Dogs express this emotion after trauma and house cats do aswell and to me this looks like a cat that has fully given himself over to his people. The trust he must have to not only take commands but to be around all those people with little to no skittishness is astounding to me. Feral cats are skittish and pumas even more so. To see him just chilling with all those kids around seemingly having a good time is beautiful. He’s not uncomfortable like many of the cats used for petting shows are. All his body language signs show content and even genuine love for getting pets. He’s like a dog in that respect. I’d seen clips of him but to know his story makes me feel so happy because his people are just as awesome as him.
I love cats and have 3 myself, but I can't imagine having to take a Puma for a walk around the block for exercise or the local park to throw it a frisbee.😹

Messi belongs to his mum and dad. He's in the best place he could ever be and we all love watching his life and love progress. Watching them has only made me appreciate my relationship with my own cat more. No matter the size. 🐾Go Messi Go🐾
My dad used to have one. His name was baby. He stayed in the house until he got too big, and was playing too rough with me and my sister. Lol Once they passed the law about owning animals like this back in the 90s, he was moved up north to a animal reservation. I miss him.
I’ve watched a ton of their videos (they also have a cheetah now) Messi is the ONLY big cat I would trust around people or in the home. Something about him, it’s like he legit doesn’t know he’s strong AF and could destroy some stuff lol, just a faithful companion loving his life
messi loves his dad so much :) that affection is just incredible !!!! a big shoutout to this couple!!!! cherish that sweet souls life as it cherishes you everyday :)

He did not even make it to the sanctuary. He was separated from his mother at very young age and was used to entertain kids in small private zoo. He must have been traumatized by this experience hence does not like kids, not aggressive, just triyng to stay away from them. He was neglected to the point the old owners considered putting him down, so sick he was.

@Pavel Tikhonov Are you a little slow? This puma would've died. It had no chance of ever being in the wild in the first place.
Messi was very calm when surrounded by children and adults. He has a very close bond with his owners who are looking after him very well. No problem here.
There is no way Messi would harm his family. I've had wolves and they were very close to me and dedicated to me as leader of the pack. Messi is very sweet with his family and hasn't shown any agression in any of the videos I've seen. He has shown himself to be adaptive and resilient in his life and shows that he is just a big house cat that loves his family.
That beautiful cat loves his human to bits. In his circumstances, he couldn't have had a better life. Seeing them together makes you feel in the presence of love and devotion.
They thought about the moral aspect and questioned if it was right. That says somethimg as someone already said, "this was people that wanted to help a poor animal that would of otherwise died. Those people are commited and love him...and pretty obvious he loves them in return. ❤
Мне очень нравится, что российские владельцы больших кошек не покупали их ради забавы, а спасали из очень сложных ситуаций. Что Месси, что пантера Луна.

@Brandon Haygood so it can die in a matter of weeks??? Messi wouldn't even know how to survive because he's too domesticated at this point. He was never a wild puma to begin with. He was born in captivity and has never known the wild. Like did you even watch the video???

@Brandon Haygood That's How it should be. Nature is wise, so petting and humanizing wild animals and predators goes against nature. This is a rare exception, cause they rescued and saved the life of the puma when he was a cub and the animal knows, I have lots of respect for them for saving the puma, you can tell the animal looks great and love them and they actually love and take good care of , but theres rich people who buy these animals and humanize them and you know..keeping that animal like a pet is like buying a Ferrari to keep it on a garage and never drive it. Every single muscle of a puma is naturally born with a purpose, and thats to live free and wild.

@Brandon Haygood do you not have any reading comprehension?
It makes sense that Messi would be the way he is. Like his pretty passive nature when compared to his wild brethren. From what I understand, Puma’s have a whole lot more in common with small cats than big ones so it makes sense that if it were treated like a house cat then it would become one.
Esa mirada , que hermoso animal.
Messi gets a large living space - and plenty of exercise and seems more happy than if he were in the wild. Now Messi, growing in captivity (also not having enough time with his siblings to play fight) would be generally as sweet as a normal housecat.
This is so amazing! Both the couple and Messi are so lucky! They get a beautiful exotic cat and Messi gets a wonderful forever home!
It's amazing how similar pumas are to domestic cats in there behaviour. If the cat is not able to live in the wild. I don't see anything wrong with this. It's a beautiful cat. And it has a good life. And the people responsible for his care seem dedicated.
Seeing him at a dog training school was adorable.

You've done an amazing job with this PUMA & given it a second chance in life..! 🙏❤️ PUMA's loves to run & leap high..! You guys should take him to an open area not frequented by humans and allow him this freedom once in a while...! All the more better, if it is a rocky/mountainous area...! Initially you guys should use a very very, very long rope/leech...! BEAUTIFUL ; ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL .. ie both you guys and the cat...! 🙏❤️❤️👍🏻

@Sam O yes it’s wolf packs lmao I read the article you’re quoting it’s about how wolf packs are out competing cougars where they are being introduced. The fact you have to lie shows how weak your argument is.

This a beautiful story and Messi is the luckiest puma to have such loving parents. He is where he belongs and may the creator smile upon his rescuers continually, they're very special! 💯💜🥰
Pretty cool to see this , it’s amazing how a lot of love and training help Messi live a life that he would not have had . Thanks for the video.
Normal I would look down on someone for keeping a large cat in a small house but there is always more to the story and they saved this cat and gave him the best life possible
This isn't about just arbitrarily keeping a wild animal as a pet, it's about saving an innocent life. He's beautiful and has a blessed life.
Aww I love Messi! You all are so blessed and lucky to have such a unique adoption opportunity. Great work guys!

Precious! Never let the unsympathetic separate this loving cat from its owners.
What a lovely story the Puma is perfectly happy where it is well loved and looked after so happy for the couple ❤️
I just started watching Messi and was wondering what the back story was when this came up as the next video. Now I know. Kudos to this couple for taking on the responsibility and saving this beautiful animal. ✌️💚
Normally I would never support keeping big cats as pets, but this is an extremely unique situation and messi seems well disciplined and well loved. What a sweetie!

No it’s NOT a matter of discipline. Messi is just super rare in that it probably lacks a lot of the aggression traits
He's more calm and controllable than a dog! Not even house cats can be trained. Remarkable creature, leave him alone with his family, they love him and he obviously loves them and is grateful they saved him...deep down he knows they saved him.
Beautiful animal!!!! Thank God for you saving this puma!!! God bless you!!!
I think because the Puma went through some things at a younger age, that it’s life now is probably much more appreciated and happy with. Love is the key to that.
I love watching this. So beautiful and cute. Respect to parents who saved this big cat and provided such a loving home.
I’m melting🥰 Messi is so precious!
This is an incredibly rare circumstance in which this was justified and to remove Messi now after he has completely adjusted would be immoral in the extreme. Acknowledge the exception and applaud two wonderful people for saving the life of an amazing creature and giving him a loving home.

This is AWESOME!! He is a beautiful cat and he deserves a loving family! Good job Alex and wife!! Bless you.
This is another perfect example of what can be accomplished when the odds are near impossible and someone cares enough to put the time and commitment in to saving a life. The fight in cats is often otherworldly when they are in this bad if shape. My cat laid in the yard for two days without its mother and was seven days old when I took her in.The vet said she was too young to make it and to put her down but I laughed at them and got her a bottle and kitten formula..That was 13 years ago..she had zero chance supposedly but we proved them wrong!
Awww he is such a happy boi he loves his bafs and his tree and he says hi when his parents come home
It's crazy, a wild and lethal predator being just a big and lovely cat. Wow. Much respect for saving him.
Wow he really is just a big cat! And not only that, he seems really relaxed and well-behaved even by housecat standards. Never seen a cat so chill during a bath and while having his/her nails cut.

@Man with No name im not saying that but if an animals flinched when having jts nails cut then you know you've done it wrong before cutting nails should not hurt animals the same way it doesnt hurt us if an animals isn't willing to let you cut their nails its because you or someone have done it wrong and caused them pain

That cat belongs just where she is, I’ve never seen a cat so happy!
He is exactly where he needs to be .
If the animal is happy that’s all that matters. I’m glad they are a family ❤️
More training and cared for than most dogs this is a win win and a testament to proper care.
Lmao her at the dog training class is so cute! She’s just fitting right in 😂
I can’t get over the fact that a literal apex predator is running around swatting a ball and kicking it like a common house cat. It’s so precious 🤣🤣

@MASpets This isn't a contest, and you don't "win" by literally making shit up. There are six main criteria for domestication: a diverse appetite, rapid maturation, willingness to breed in captivity, docility, strong nerves, and a nature that conforms to social hierarchy. That is according to Jared Diamond's Pulitzer-winning book, Guns, Germs and Steel, which also won the Royal Society Science Books prize, also called the Aventis prize. It has been widely adopted by scientists in the fields of genetics and domestication. And as you can clearly see, pumas meet one, arguably two of those criteria when according to every example in history, at least four of the six are needed for successful domestication. You can't name an example of a big cat that has been domesticated because there are none. As for general domestication, it takes at least several hundred years and often much longer for changes to happen on a genetic level, as the only animals known to have pronounced gene elasticity are canids. Every other species takes dozens of generations at the very least for gene-driven domestic attributes to emerge. This is basic stuff, and the fact that you don't know it, and you're so confidenfally incorrect that you think you're winning some sort of imaginary knowledge contest, makes it clear you're coming from a position of extreme ignorance. "But some guy on KZread told me..." is not a valid argument.

@GozerTheGozerian pumas are actually know to be easily tamed. they are the easiest none domesticated house cat to tame. there easier than small wild cats that look like house cats because they are naturally more confident.
What a beautiful precious cat 💙Thank God he was rescued, cared for so he could live a healthy, meaningful life.
Lovely couple . It’s wonderful that youve given that beautiful creature a new lease on life ..Messi looks so happy 😻😻
I would say 99% of the time when I hear about this stuff I think the big cat should go to a special reserve or sanctuary. I think this is the 1%. They didn't get him because they wanted a cool exotic pet, they trained him, they have appropriate space, and are providing appropriate care. Given the circumstances it appears that letting the big cat stay where it is would be best for all parties. I would still be a little worried about injuries or accidents. Big cats can easily and accidentally kill a human adult just by playing, so I hope they are being cautious. Also cutting your Mountain lion's nails, good lord that has to be scary.
Messi will never, ever hurt his human family, seen many videos with Messi, his love for them is extraordinary.
Ok to the dog training school , gd yall are amazing ❤ also to the owners thats crazy . U raised him so friendly he was able to be near multiple (HUNTING) dogs and not be highly aggressive. He was clearly aware but he was remaining calm ❤
Messi seems like an extraordinarily kind, gentle soul. Like a house cat, he's only ever known life in captivity and being reliant upon humans since he was a tiny baby. Look at the way he interacts with people, he's very similar to a housecat while indoors and a common dog outdoors. He isn't a threat to anybody. Releasing him into the wild would be a death sentence.

s s If it decides to attack and you aren't looking, it's game over. It would be like having an absurdly strong, lanky teenager blindside you with claws and fangs. It's the claws on the back legs that will definitely do you in, if it doesn't crush your larynx immediately. It's either you or them, 50/50, but if it gets the drop on you, you are done. Well, unless you are like that one crazy dude who punched one down its throat, and got his arm ripped off with it still lodged in. The puma choked to death.

It's definitely not the best situation, but at least Messi has a chance at life. It is real apparent that it's humans really are doing its best to keep it happy and healthy. As anyone can see, Messi does really love its humans, and it seems to enjoy the life it has, even though it is definitely not the best situation for everyone involved
The final part where Messi looks up to Alex face and rub his head on this shoulder and face is what is called Unconditional Love
I watch that channel all the time and the love they show for Messi and the cheetah gerda is awesome. Those two people share a massive bond with those two cats.
