    I really respect your willingness to accept the changes necessary to compress 20+ episodes into 8. A lot of reactors are upset that certain storylines aren't stretched out or included at all, not really looking at the bigger picture. You seem to have a very open mind when it comes to this, and we all appreciate it.

    Zuko getting respect from the 41st was so moving. And I actually like the change of him actually fighting back but hesitating to actual injure his father because of his natural compassion. I think it adds extra weight to his lines about compassion being weakness and why he’s internalized that so much.

    Same, i completely agree especially with that last part. You can tell that's been hovering over his head all those years. I know some people didn't like it because the original way seemed sadder but I feel like the angle they went at here fits this particular take better imo. Because of two things: one in this series like you said, they're highlighting even more the fact that zuko has a naturally compassionate nature and yet simply wants to be the son his father wants (which is the complete opposite of what he is deep down, so those two things are in constant conflict)

  • @justlivinglife1167

    @justlivinglife1167

    And two: because unlike the original, ozai isn't JUST supposed to be a one-dimensional megalomaniac who's crazy for power and hates his son. Instead they gave him just a bit~ more depth, in the fact that he genuinely wants zuko to become stronger (at first anyway). Maybe not for the right reasons but nonetheless because of that it makes the moment of him purposefully scarring him after he showed compassion even more impactful. Because you can see in his eyes he doesn't enjoy it but thinks he "has" to for zukos own good🙁

    Most of it is really good, I’m still processing a couple things from the last 2 episodes though there is one scene I’d dare say was done better than the animation, but there is a couple changes that just irk me reaaaallly bad and felt unecessary, ( I also can’t believe I caught myself saying yay to a certain character) Overall though I agree people were too quick to judge, I need some time to sit with it before I decided. Currently sitting at a 7/10 for this fan!

    I know they don’t say this, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to imagine that the 41st were bewildered about being taken out of the war to effectively babysit the prince, in exile. I imagine they’ve never shown Zuko this respect, and we know Zuko is a stickler for the rules. I imagine the injured pride on both sides, the soldiers and the prince. I can imagine they largely behaved out of respect for Iroh.

    For what I understand, I think the gender flipping of the relationships (Sokka - Suki, Iroh - June) were attempts by the creators (for better or worse) to downplay specific negative traits about the characters we're supposed to root for - namely, Sokka's initial sexism and the interaction between Iroh and June basically being a "dirty old man" stereotype - to be something more currently socially acceptable and palatable.

    Yeah we wouldn’t want sokka learning a good lesson, it might make him look bad to not start off perfect. Isn’t it better to teach children not to be sexist than to leave the topic alone? Although I do agree about the Iroh stuff bc there was no lesson there.

  • @evilwelshman

    @evilwelshman

    3 ай бұрын

    @@elisitbon4672 But.... the live-action adaptation seems definitely not meant for children? I guess the way the topic was covered via Sokka was thus too ham-fisted for the live-action's target audience. Instead, the the theme was broadened out (or watered down, depending on your take on it) to be more about not being pigeonholed by society's roles and expectations of you. Instead, they kept the sexism aspect confined to the Northern Water Tribe, and personified through Pakku. This helps prevent retreading the exact same themes (which is especially important for the live-action adaptation given its lower episode count and binge-watching format). Otherwise, what it then creates is the image that the Water Tribes as a nation is sexist, as opposed to just the Northern Water Tribe being the ones who are backwards thinking.

    Like in the swamp episode, Kotara think she sees her mother, but at this point Sokka had already met Princess yue and he was seeing her. Also aang saw toph in the swamp, but we haven’t been introduced to her character here or as of yet. Hakoda never doubted sokka in the animated series. Knowing that he does doubt him as a warrior, this may make Sokka lean more into his engineer side.

    One thing I actually like more in the live series is the greater time spent exploring Ozai's interactions and behavior. In the animated series, I always felt Ozai was too much of a capering bad guy. We never saw much of him at all, even toward the end. I wanted to see more of why he did what he did... not to excuse it, but just so he was more of a living, breathing character. In the OG, he's just shitty to Zuko and there's not a lot of scenes outlining anything. Here, though... we see the rationale and the dimension of an abuser. That he has a logic and internal mechanism for his terrible behavior. I like that.

    Awww I think the gender role switch was interesting actually and not at all demeaning to the female characters. I think the show makes them confident. And Suki just had an innocent crush…that was her way of flirting and it makes sense for her character as being a curious confident, but also ignorant. As she said in Kyioshi they don’t go out much😅 Suki and June are still very badass

    Koh no bullshit is the thing of nightmares. I kinda like that they blended the elements of all the spirit world episodes. They mixed the library with the owl spirit wan shit tong he who knows 10,000 things with the swamp mix that with hei bai the forest spirit. And also the fox spirits who were with wan shi tong. Only this time it’s more of an ice fox where as the foxes with wan shi tong in the cartoon were from the desert.

  • @curlyxcoco

    wan shi tong was OLDY there for fanservice (which idc about) and the fox yue thing has little to do with the foxy knowledge seekers. its something they added for fun. assume. they made koh a villain (as in he didnt help aang at all) and that led to the only reason they went to roku being to get help to fight koh.. the swamp thing was ruined because i still dont even know if thats what they were going for because if so (they revealed the technique of being able to live in the spirit world after “death” early OR they really just let Gyatso vanish if it wasnt an illusion) also hei bai they just forgot about (poor hei bai) we didnt get to see him go in peace

    It's funny. I was so opposed to Netflix making this. Especially after that synopsis they released placing it in our world and making them high school kids. And then when DiMartino and Konietzko said fuck this there was no way I was ever going to change my mind about it. But I'm in love with this and personally I think Nickelodeon had a lot to do with this being good and not Netflix. I have to admit it's making me seriously angry all the usual suspects hating on it. The negativity on KZread is so forced and dishonest. This is an amazing adaptation. It will never get me to go back to Netflix but it deserves praise. Especially after that mess M Night put out.

    Good take on the Azula & Ozai scene. I think that the whole take of "Ozai would never praise Zuko even if it was to manipulate Azula" isn't true at all. He's always pitted the two against eachother through manipulation & its his way of abusing them in the name of "improvement & competition" & you can clearly see that here with that scene -> which leads to Azula's perfectionist trait - If you ask me, the building blocks they have going for Azula's (& even Ozai's) character in this to lead them to how we see them in Season 2 & 3 of the animated series is really great. I look forward to a season 2.

With Dia not being so over-the-top I doubt that we will get his connection jeong jeong when aang first tries to learn fire bending. This also has elements of the storm episode where the crew learns the backstory about Zuko.
