I actually thought that Suki having no idea of how to interact with Sokka and being like to much with her fighting style to flirt was like so cute and realistic. They're still just teens after all, even if they're at war, and her arc here is a lot about how much of the normal stuff she has been missing, so it's cool.

Yukari, Suki's mother in here, is played by Tamlyn Tomita. When she was young, she played Kumiko (the love interest) in Karate Kid Part II and then went on to reprise her role years later in Cobra Kai!

Great to see Daniel Dai Kim back for the third time to the Avatar universe after first being a Earth nation general in book 2 ep1 of OG Avatar, and Hiroshi Sato in Korra.

Thanks for giving it a chance with an OPEN MIND and giving this version of storytelling a chance. Thanks for judging it based on how this show is, and how it has stuck to the CORE/SPIRIT of the ATLA story. And not on how it is not a scene-for-scene recreation/ remake. Look forward to seeing your reactions on the other episodes as well.🤞🤞

You can tell why as a child watching this they wouldnt hit upon all the death that would have insued which is why they didnt show it. This being a series meant for adults we see the dive into all the death because as an adult we tend to have a different focus at that stage of our life.

One thing to consider with the dialog being "too on the nose," they are also trying to reach out to people who are new to the franchise (like me). Some things which seem painfully obvious to a fan like yourself may need a bit more exposition to newcomers. I'm not disagreeing with your criticism here (I also found the dialog wasn't a strength of the show), just suggesting a possible reason for some of the scripting choices.

I think we have to turn our superfan brain off to the dialogue. I saw it as a person going in new. Omg it was amazing binge it in day. Now it does have it bad episode. I won't say but beside that it's amazing .

I love how the number one rule in cinema is “show, don’t tell”, and yet the writers for this show just continue telling us how the characters feel through clunky dialogue instead of showing us through their actions.

idk, I feel like they do that a lot, but something like Zuko feeling almost worse now that he has hope or the idea that people are going to fight harder now that the Avatar is back - I can't think of a way one could show that without telling each other in a conversation - it's comparison stuff that we'd have needed to see how people were getting on before Aang showed back up that we just don't have time for in the show (nor did we see in the animated show either). Some emotions, especially complex ones like that, you do have to use dialogue to tell how the character is feeling since we don't have an internal monologue. Not to mention the animated show did that all the time and no one seems to have a problem with that, so idk

Suki being socially awkward with Sokka is so cute. Like she is going off vibes cuz she probably never felt that way before but also just might not know how to interact with him outside of combat. Like she is so comfortable as a warrior and was never socialized as a girly girl. So they don’t connect as boy and girl but as warriors. A mutual respect. And they are on the same wavelength so they dance well together.

I don't like how the show basically erased Sokka's sexism because that flaw is part of character growth. Sokka wants to be a warrior, a hero , a MAN like his father but he's doesn't know how to properly do that. So he puts on this big arrogant, cocky, masoginistic macho persona to try imatate what he thinks a man is and to hide his insecurities of not being as great as his father. But then on his journey with Aang he meets Suki who humbles him and teaches him to respect women. Then he meets Sai who helps him discover his engineering skills and he learns the more to him than just a warrior. He gets over his jealousy of Katarras bending powers and discovers his own self worth.

Watched all 8 Episodes. My score for the series is a 9/10 across the board. Definitely recommend, will be showing and watching with my 8yr old daughter once she is home from school on Friday and over the weekend. 1) The air nomad deaths are shown, so to adults, watch first 20 minutes before kids. Otherwise kids can watch once Aang is in ice. 2) This is not a copy of the original. 8 Live action episodes to tell story of 20 cartoon episodes. Episode 6 of original cartoon looks like it will be in season 2 of the live action. Season 2 episode 2 of original cartoon is added into season 1, instead of episode 6. 3) The first episode is the first 3 episodes together with the deaths of the air nomads. 4) Original cartoon Episodes 4, 5, 7-10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 have their essential episode essence represented, in episodes 2 through 6 of the live action. A lot of things are re-ordered. Some things are expanded. You will see parts of things from a recognizable episode mashed with events from other episodes. 5) Watch the entire thing BEFORE judging. Sometimes you will think something was forgotten only to learn, that the other parts or viewpoints of a given episode are in a follow-up episode. The way the episodes are mashed together means the story jumps between events of various episodes, so the representation of one episode might occur across 2 or 3 episodes; or there may be an intervening episode. 6) Do Not PreJudge. The format is different than the original cartoon, initially the order will seem odd. Just hang in with it, overall it does work. 7) Episodes 11, and 14 are not shown, but pay attention anytime Zuko, Iroh, or Zhou get a report. The events of those episodes are mentioned but it’s a one time blink, or talk and you will miss it. These episodes have indirect representation in the series. The honorable mentions in the reports made me laugh while watching. 8) The Jeong Jeong part of Episode 16 might occur in season 2, or 3 without Zhou. Jeong Jeong is not in season 1 of this live action. He has not been cast yet. 9) The last 2 episodes of the Netflix Live action have been mashed together, the mashup reorders the events of original cartoon episodes 18-20. The Katara vs Paku fight is Wow! 10) Koh will appear far earlier than expected. and not when or how fans expect. He is still a creepy, freaky, and dangerous spirit. They expand Koh’s role to include some of the lore with him from the comics as well. He is voiced by George Takei (Sulu from 1966 Star Trek). 11) The original voice actor of the cabbage man, plays and is, the cabbage man in this Netflix live Action series!! 12) The previous 3 avatars and ocean spirit La, at points will be given permission by Aang to use him as a channel. Kyoshi is obvious. Many people apparently missed when Roku did so. Pay attention, do not miss it by talking or by being distracted by what Roku is showing and teaching Aang. Kurik will refuse. La’s turn is OBVIOUS. 13) Azula’s machinations are definitely as evil as Ozai’s. Yes Azula learns lightning bending before the end of season 1. She is far darker than the original cartoon.

Aang's refusal to even attempt waterbending really annoyed me because of how the season ends like he should have been doing some basic push and pulls and it just came across as lazy for the character. At the end of the season as we know Aang's water bending is pivotal in the story so his refusing to do so makes him a bit of a Gary Stu by the end which is the one thing he never was in the animated version despite his Avatar powers. Also really good exploration of Kyoshi but Aang thinking "oh I channelled Kyoshi so now i don't need to actively learn the other elements". NO!

That's accurate to the cartoon, though. He doesn't take his waterbending seriously, even when he's training under Pakku - and at the end, it's not his waterbending he's using, it's the ocean spirit using his body, so no Gary Stu issues there (other than what was present in the cartoon as well)

@@jpblack2148yes, he did know a bit of water bending in the animated version when he got to the northern water tribe, but it wasn't his waterbending that had anything to do with him joining with the ocean spirit and saving the day - his waterbending was inconsequential to that part of the story both in the animated and live-action, so there's no 'Gary Stu' going on as there's no waterbending on Aang's part going on in either.
