    Yeah that Zuko and Iroh scene honestly took me to a place I wasn’t ready for 😭😭😭😭 And when you think about it Zuko was Uncle Iroh’s second chance at being a father and Uncle Iroh was Zuko’s second chance at having a good father. This damn show 😭😭😭

    I think one thing the Live Action did incredibly, and it just shows that it's meant for older audiences (like those who grew with the animated version and are now adults) , is reminding us constantly that this is a WAR, and Wars are cruel and not funny, and not sugar-coated the stakes placed on a group of kids. That's why some changes here work so well, for example going to Kyoshi island looking for Kyoshi instead of a giant fish.

    The Zuko-Iroh stuff just hurt my feelings in the best way. I like that the 3rd episode even had elements of The Grear Divide. They’re really keeping the ideas of the original while also showing that 100 years of endless war actually isn’t cute or funny. It would damage everyone.

    I'm not sure the power of friendship was quite what Bumi was trying to teach. In fact, quite the opposite. Bumi, embittered by an entire lifetime of war, was trying to teach Aang that he has to learn to make difficult choices, such as choosing who to sacrifice, in order to defeat the Fire Lord. This Bumi is very different from the original Nickelodeon one; though I feel this version makes a lot of sense, especially given the darker and more horrifying tone of this series.

  • @TayoEXE

    @TayoEXE

    4 ай бұрын

    This Bumi feels a little more realistic. He made it clear that Aang has to make hard choices and may not be able to save everyone because Bumi has been alive all this time having to make difficult choice after difficult choice while Aang barely even feels any time has passed by. Imagine you are the ruler of a large, prosperous city, but then all of the hardest decisions have to fall on you on whom to save, whom to prioritize, etc., during a war that has been going on for 100 years. It must have been very hard.

    I always get soft when they play "Leaves from the vine," and I suddenly get all teary-eyed. But in this episode, during Zuko and Iroh's talk and intro of the music, it hit me hard. They were able to capture as to why Iroh is very close to Zuko and why he cares so much.

    I think the bitterness probably comes from thinking Aang dies with all of the Air Nomads, only to find out he has returned after 100 years. I can see how the first conclusion Bumi might form is that Aang ran away from the war and that he is avoiding joining the fight, just like Sokka assumed in the first ep. What I think is clever about this is that we get a good morality tale playing Aang's response about only saving the world by relying on his friends, with the Mechanist relying on his friends, neighbours, and king when he chooses to admit what he's been doing and help them uncover the Fire Nation spies. The Mechanist felt like it was his burden to protect his son alone. In the end, coming clean becomes a matter of trusting those around him to help him keep his son safe. I think these two episodes really sold the show for me, and I'm so glad they got the clunky dialogue more or less sorted. I've seen the rest and if they keep this up, I think Season 2 will be awesome. I think Netflix would be stupid not to give this 3-4 seasons.

    The way I see it King Bumi has become bitter yes, but he is also deep inside still a friend - he is trying to show Aang what it really means to fight this war, he has lived through it, and as he says at the dinner table: You might be a 100 years old, but you haven't lived for a 100 years.. - He is basically schooling Aang into his world - giving him a speed course into life as it is now, in return - his lesson is: If you want to lead, you will have to make impossible choices. And you cannot trust anyone. Aang proves him wrong in his mistrust, showing him the lost power of friendship.. All in all, this adaptation is one of the few, that managed to capture the DNA of the original but yet give it a swing to something a bit different. AMAZING, every episode I watch is better than the last.

  • @ShinobiPhoenix-YT0
    @ShinobiPhoenix-YT04 ай бұрын

    24:43 People tend to forget that adaptations can have different audiences than the original. This is the reverse of how people feel about adaptations made for younger audiences. Like Frozen being from the The Ice Queen. It's funny that people keep bringing up the show not being lighthearted or silly enough, but the show isn't necessarily just for kids now, it's for people who grew up and older audiences. I didn't personally vibe with the original Avatar from what I saw, but I am much more interested in this slightly more serious take. It's just different sensibilities.

    Something to keep in mind, bumi was there before the war obviously. He also knows the last avatar died for his pride, too attached to his friend to see the monster he became. Bumi isnt a bad king he wouldnt leave his kingdom with no leader this wasnt a death match. Her just wanted to know that aang COULD have dropped the boulder on him if he needed to. Obviously bumi isnt gonna go out by gettin hit with a rock. He jsut needed to know aang wasnt going to be a blind fool like roku was for so long.

Northern air temple - thinkering of sokka and mechanist about war ballons. Jet - jet wants to sacrifice innocent earth kingdom citizens to free themselves from fire nation colonization. The great divide - katara and sokka argues about who's telling the real story. Bato of the water tribe - aang and zuko versus battle.

    So about that scene at Lu Ten's funeral. Paul Sun Hyung lee killed the role of Iroh and im 99.9% sure he's seen if not experienced himself what its like to be a parent who has lost a child. His performance in that scene is traumatically accurate. How do I know? Lets put it this way. When I saw Iroh sitting in that chair with that faraway stare, the fire gone from his eyes, all I could see was my grandfather at my uncle's funeral. He had the exact same facial expression. That scene broke me.

    Here we have alot more back story with Zuko and Irohs realationship. He sits with him at his sons Funeral. The show never showed us that. Also Aang having a deep talk with Iroh didnt happen until Toph with the crew. I think the end of season 2. Azula on her spy shit. We get her and ozai early on here. We dont have Katara getting jealous of Aangs ablity of great water bending. The engineer was not in Omashu he was at an air temple. We get Jet here as well. Unfortunately we dont get the Aang vs Jet fight I really wanted to see that.

    *Spoiler*The whole of season 1s theme for Aang seemed to be that he doesn't have to do it all on his own no mater what everyone--past avatar's, Bumi etc are telling him. I think this version of Bumi as well as a lot of the changes suit more of an older audience's adaptation, something that would seem realistic to us.

    While I think it's fine for adaptations to make changes, and it isn't inherently a bad thing, I think it's important to ask WHY a change was made. A lot of instances, it's because of time-constraints, budget-constraints, feasibility... sometimes it's to attempt to improve upon something, or to just aim for a different flavor/goal entirely. For Bumi, I don't know why the change was made. There was nothing about the lesson learned (relying on friends) that felt it was necessary for Aang to learn. Aang already knew this. Bumi is the one learning this lesson, but he only appears in this one episode, so why change the source material to give him an arc for twenty minutes? What was wrong with the lesson he was imparting from the show (outside-thinking is the way to defeat conventional-thinking)?
