    "Please be a good adaptation, we need it". Please stop caring so much about things you can't influence. It's just a fictional story, and it's very unhealthy relying on outside sources to make you happy, hoping when you can be disappointed. People are way too emotional, with way too many mood things, you get depressed by that, so stop caring so much, makes life so much easier. Or just grow up, and help fix the real world, however you can, instead of being a kid still living in a fictional world, like the Avatar universe.

    @@ncard00 bro, what the hell let people enjoy the show, like there's nothing wrong with wanting a good adaptation. and in the Avatar community, a good live action adaptation IS needed, I mean the movie made a while ago was so terrible, people needed this show to see that a good live action show of Avatar could be made. if you don't want to care about this stuff, fine go right ahead. but stfu and leave other people alone

    To be honest this series benefits a LOT by the fact that the live action was so bad. I would be way more critical, but in comparison this is so good that I subconsciously allow small things to go. Which isn't bad per se, but I will acknowledge that it's a factor. Like someone who watched just the animated and then this might be way more critical than those of us that watched the trainwreck. THIS I can see them fixing with seasons, learning by feedback, and by season 3 it'll be awesome, by Korra it'll be a masterpiece. The first season being perfect is a rare thing. I'm fine with good.

    Yeah, there is scope for improvement. But for a first season and with a lot of pressure and expectations, it has done a really good job. Like some changes were a bit jarring, but I understand how they have to fit it all into 8 episodes, so I understand it. And most importantly they have kept the main important scenes in the show and have done justice to it by giving it sufficient time, so that they feel the impact of the emotions. I enjoyed every minute of the show. Looking forward to an even better Season 2.

    When you do the maths, a season of eight 50-minute episodes is the same length of time as a season of twenty 20-minute episodes. What's different is that with only eight episodes, they have to make things more linear; they can't take twenty minutes out for a purely character-based episode, they have to work the character stuff in with the plot stuff. It's not as good as the original animated show. But that's not because there's anything _bad_ about it, I don't think. The animated show was some of the best television ever made, and for that reason alone it's going to be an incredibly long, hard uphill battle for anything else to live up to it.

    Another advantage of telling the story with the genocide of the air nomads in the first part is that, if you pay attention, they never say it's been 100 years since that when we got to Katara and Sokka, so new watchers will think up till that point that this will be about stopping the fire nation from conquering the world, not that they already rule it, which is a thing in the animated one we know from the first moment. There's hints in what they talk sure, but new watchers would think it's only been a few weeks as much or something and that everything did just happen to Aang and that the fire nation is just starting to gain control. It's a cool change if you ask me, it tells the story differently so gives different plot twists and narratives.

    Aang can't really fly, he was just bending at the start of the ep, for that he obviously needs the right form and position, and it also takes more effort as he has to find the impulse in almost evey move. With his "thingy" as you call it, it is way more smooth and fast, for which it is more useful at times.

    This is a really good adaptation of the series. It sticks to the core of the story. People should understand that most of the live-action adaptations usually deal with serious issues and tones a bit more than Animated versions and usually give it more screen time, as they can't sweep trauma and deaths under the rug and simply change the tone like in a Nickelodeon Animated Show. Good adaptations show the characters dealing with these issues without losing the overall plotline and without straying away from the nature of the characters. I feel this series has done it in a really good way. Please watch it with an OPEN MIND instead of expecting a 1:1 adaptation and scene-for-scene remake. This was a really good adaptation. All the characters have depth and they develop and come into their own over the episodes. Most of the scenes from the Original Series have been included keeping their motivations and nature similar to the series. And even the casting and their mannerisms resemble the characters in the Animated Series. Please watch with an open mind and don't give in to the EXTREMELY HARSH AND NEGATIVE CRITICISMS that are coming the way of this show. This is a good adaptation for the AVATAR fans and a good Web Series for someone who has never seen Avatar before as well. Please watch ALL the episodes with an OPEN MIND and then make your own judgement on this show. It will be worth it. We have finally got a really good adaptation for the AVATAR series after 19 YEARS of waiting and only getting a tragedy of a movie. Let's watch it, give it POSITIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMS rather than nitpicking and give it all the support by watching it with an open mind so that they don't cancel the show and try and make the remaining seasons even better. Looking forward to Season 2. Hopefully, it would be as good or maybe even better.

    18:33 I have to disagree with this point, especially on judging the writing based on the other version. Cartoons, especially American ones, by nature drum up bombastic personalities and simpler black-and-white concepts to keep kids attentions. YA and live action tends to go for subdued and slower burn build up of character traits instead of hitting you over the head, especially if it's part of their character arc. Showing what actually brings the passion out of Katara could work better for the format. Since it's live action, I feel like starting Katara off as big angry presence would get torn apart by Toxic Male Internet for a girl being "loud and whiny and can't control her emotions". It's not fair, but we are on KZread after all. A good comparison for me is Yu-Gi-Oh, especially GX vs 5D's. Early in 5D's, Fans of the first two series didn't like the more serious tone and subtle more adult characters, especially Yusei as a much more stoic quiet thinker type instead of big personalities like Yugi and Judai/Jaden. The show went on and people loved Yusei as a Big protective mature older brother type protagonist dealing with a more serious world with some laughs and humor, but deals appropriately toward very dark subject matters. I wish the show wasn't 8 episodes to get some proper build, but we'll see.

This is the essence of the show, the dna, but the wrapped in a short 8 episode reel with bit more serious tone showing things from another perspective. Inviting us to, if we like it, explore more by watching the animated series. They have to kill some darlings in the process or it would be just a sad attempt at a copy of something marvelous. Instead of starting from the perspective of Katara and Sokka, we actually start from the perspective from the Aang and how he actually left his house one second to cool his head, only to have lost everyone he loves in a matter of, what feels to him like, minutes.

It's odd to think that Aang going into the Avatar state seeing the corpses of all the people he loved "isn't earned" because he wasn't hopeful they'd survived before, but also thinking that Katara, a girl he'd only met like a day ago, talking him down *would* have been earned. We only think Katara talking him down is earned because we've seen it so many times in animation - if in the cartoon, they'd have Gyatzo's memory calming Aang down and the show switched it to Katara, you know everyone would be foaming at the mouth that it wasn't earned. I also did feel a lot of passion from Katara in this episode, so I'm not sure why others aren't - maybe it was just that one scene in the cartoon with her screaming at Sokka that's throwing people off? Because she stands up for Aang constantly and insists that they need to do something rather than sitting back and being passive. I guess also a thing to keep in mind is that cartoons are over-expressive - a flat out screaming match is going to come off as over-the-top in live-action while a raised voice and strong body language will work much better to show anger in a way that looks realistic and not, well, cartoony and over-acted.

    To me, expecting airbenders to be at the southern temple despite traveling there with people from this time was something that always felt off for me with the original. I think this show handled that better. There's no way all of them didn't know the airbenders had been extinct for 100 years. And if they knew (because why wouldn't they) , it was cruel of them not to try and talk to him about it. Most of the changes made, I agree with. And I have seen all 8 episodes.

    It gets better. Finished it in one go when it came out. (disabled and stuck in bed so what else is there to do???) The show runner stated he thinks the pilot is the weakest episode and the chatter is because it was made while the original creators were there and there was a lot of arguing over creative licensing over how to write certain characters and dialogue. Also I think some of the cast haven't acted much before and they are getting settled into the role? I ended up really liking how they did certain episodes and hating certain other parts. Just wish the vfx could have been better. As an ex-photographer/retoucher, I can tell the people working on this had little to no experience working on children's faces since anytime they apply vfx to a face, it accidentally ages them up (in my eyes). Hope you continue through the series!

    Keep in mind that the animated series started out aimed at a 12 year old audience [they realised early that their audience was actually larger so they updated it to more late teen audience] but this is clearly aimed at an older audience and that is why the tone is different. I would say Katara does improve in the second episode. So far I watched the first two episodes as soon as they came out then went to bed as it was late and I wanted to check out a few reactions before watching the rest. Here was my reaction after watching the first 2 episodes: It is not the same, but it is good. Imagine if the events of Avatar the Last Airbender were real and happened 200 years ago. Nobody today was around to see it happen and there are no doubt many histories which may not all agree on every point, depending on who wrote them. So someone today created the animated series to tell the story, and they did a good job of telling it as they understood it. Then later another person does a live action version and they also try to tell the story and do a good job of it, but the two tellings put different emphasis on things and perhaps use different sources for the details and in the end, both tell the story well but neither is perfect telling of it. Neither includes everything that happened because there would be just too much to include it all and some details might be arranged differently to make it all work as a docudrama - because in both cases, they are telling it as a story, not as a dry history book. That is what this is like. If you assume that it was a true story being told by people who only have historic accounts to work with, both tellings are likely to be imperfect but they capture the essence of the history. That's how I choose to see this and on that basis, both are great jobs but they are not identical. Also like the many tellings of the story of Robin Hood - there are multiple great jobs of telling the story but none of them are the same, just similar. There are also some bad jobs that have been done with Robin Hood - just as Avatar had a bad job done of trying to tell the story in the Movie that Shan't be Named.

    @arunshajiabraham

    Yeah, I mean I am a huge Rick Riordan Fan and I love the PJO Live action series, but it has its flaws. But this show is made a million times better. The pacing is superb, a lot of exposition have been dealt as flashbacks and people feeling those emotions instead of telling us how they felt. It has a more serious nature which is necessary as the fate of the world is at stake and live action adaptations usually give the serious issues more screen time rather than sweep it under the rug and bring a funny tonal change like in an Animated Childrens Show. And a lot of character development and overall storyline has been well tied up with really good writing. There is no moment where you feel bored, unlike the animated series, and that's good writing. And some of the acting especially from the senior actors was really good. It has a few flaws with some of the chid actor's acting and some CGI effects on the kid's faces and all, but that could definitely get better as they make future seasons. But the way people are making this out to be a trash and pathetic show simply because it's not a 1:1 adaptation is just dumb. 1:1 is not an adaptation. That's called a remake. Every good adaptation says the same main story, through the storytelling method that they think is best. And as long as they stick to the main core/spirit of the ATLA story, i think we should give it a chance, watch all the episodes with an open mind and then make our judgement. Let's enjoy both versions seperately.

    Hi Monica! Great & completely understandable reaction & awesome editing as always! So many ppl are traumatized about seeing the Air nomads & rightfully so! But imo it helps the pacing you were talking about as far as quickly setting up earned stakes, esp for Aang & the non-Fire nations. Since they don’t have the room to let Aang kind of unfurl slowly into mid-war reality like in the animated series. Likely one of the reasons they also had his actual familial love for Gyatso & Gyatso himself calm Aang down & out of the Avatar state. Which in the context of this ep works better than Katara at this point, given how much time hasn't passed btw them. As far as acting & writing, I think that a couple of the main leads take a lil time to warm into their characters, as does the writing (which is still 98% more “showing” than Percy Jackson did, imo). An unfortunate side-effect of most first seasons, even an adaptation. But it does settle in more with each ep. Hopefully they’ll get more time with these characters & as young actors, and also in the writers room. Though I am impressed with Gordon Cormier (Aang). Bc this doesn’t work if he doesn’t. Like striking a non-animated, real life tone of zen-optimism mixed with heavy emotions (on his almost too adorable lil face!) without veering into precocious annoyance, or slipping out of character & in that COSTUME?! It SHOULD be a disaster given a lot of his cheesy lines alone! But he’s a kid/lead, on a huge budget, insane expectations, green screen epic & he’s really owning what he’s been given imo. 👏🏾 I miss the cartoon goofiness too! But the actors are giving us facial nuance & shading of their internal conflicts & you can tell everyone cares. It uses the live medium effectively & I binged the whole thing. But also didn’t watch ATLA for the first time until I was an adult, during COVID, so…🙃 Genuinely hoping you can enjoy the rest! Esp bc of your lovely history with your mom & the show! 🥰 Please have a great weekend & try to stay healthy with the randomness that is end of winter weather, blech.

    I haven’t watched your reaction yet so idk if you pointed this out but, the one thing that made me stop watching the episode at the 26 minute mark 😂 is that they made Aang ACCIDENTALLY run away. Like they made him just go for a ride on Appa to clear his head and he just happened to get caught in a storm…even though the comet was meant to be happening and it takes at least a day to get between the air temple and South Pole. And we don’t even see the comet. If it wasn’t for Sozin saying the comet is making them stronger, I would have no idea cause the sky looks normal in every scene but- not what I’m arguing about. I’ll ignore it XD but I couldn’t ignore Aang’s change. This decision completely changes the story and Aang as a character. Him choosing to run away is a major part of his character. Having him accidentally do it just…it rewrites his character entirely and not for the better. Not to mention they also changed his motivation by having him just be freaked out over the responsibility of being the Avatar. Whereas in the original, that wasn’t the only problem. Yeah he was worried about so much responsibility like anyone would be, but his decision to run away was a build up of different factors. When he’s telling Katara the story she asks him “so you were upset you were the Avatar? Why wouldn’t you be excited about it?” And he responds with “well, I didn’t know how to feel about it. All I know is after that, everything began changing.” And we see how Aang’s friends treated him differently, he wasn’t allowed to play with the other kids anymore. But he still wasn’t running away because he was enjoying himself with Gyatso. But when he overhears the conversation the monks are having about sending him away to complete his training, that is the final straw and he chooses to run away. They completely destroyed that in this adaptation. They changed his motivation for running away AND they changed the choice of him running away anyway so there wasn’t even any point of them changing the motivation if he’s not going to purposely run away because of the responsibility or whatever 😂 So yeah. Not a fan. I will now be watching if it purely to point out inaccuracies and not taking it seriously cause, this ruined it for me. I was ignoring A LOT of gripes I was having with it, some were small and unimportant, some a bit bigger. But I was trying to go in with an open mind. This was the thing that I just couldn’t look past 😂

    Ok, so between access to the show and what I have seen, I have differing feelings from fans because what turned me off from watching the original show WAS the childish nature at the start. Maybe it's because I'm an Upper Millennial (lower Millennials love Avatar/Airbender) but was very "I get it" because it was very black and white and childish early plots with manufactured drama like kids in high school thought about (to me) and I was very over that. Same feelings I had for the Netflix Voltron show at the start. I want to give Korra a chance instead because I heard it's more starting for plots important to young adults instead of children. I also would like to give the Netflix version a shot and one day try the original again. I heard a lot about future topics they cover, so I am more interested in those. These are all based on my personal experience watching what I saw though.

  • @Sataandagi96
    @Sataandagi965 ай бұрын

    I binged the show yesterday and I think they did an overall good job. Of course it isn't perfect and there is obviously a reason why the original producers left. The lightheartedness is missing to a degree and everything is a lot more mature (in Germany you have to be at least 12 to watch it). This level of earnesty would have been a great fit for Kyoshi or Yangchen instead, who were a lot more mature in their characters (due to their ages too). Aang, the way we know him, is just a goofy kid. This show took his character (and everybody elses) and changed it to sth. that fits the topic more though. They are at war. They have seen and felt a lot of hurt, and it shows. The writers took a lot of creative liberties and not everyone will be happy with them. But I personally think, that the amount of goofyness depicted in the original cannot be moved to a realistic setting. The faces, the dances, certain reactions just don't mix well with reality and still trying to add them would end up in horrible immersion breaks. Let's imagine we took the funny faces from the One Piece Manga/Anima and applied them to the LA. That would have been horrifying. Animation is glorious for its nearly infinite possibilities to capture the fantastic, expression and effects, while still managing to enchant the viewer. It works, because it's animated. Whereas reality is a lot more down to earth. Imagine you'd turn into a sharp toothed monster once you get angry. Or you fall to the ground when you're in disbelief. That doesn't work. It would feel off. Some like one more than the other. And some make more out of it than others. Shyamalan took the fantastic and tried to apply it to his realistic vision, ultimately failing after giving it the lowest of efforts. He didn't understand the essence of the show, nor the fantastic aspects of animation that cannot just be copy and pasted into live action. Taking something big and pushing it into something small will never go well. And animations are finally on the rise, gaining the respect they deserve. (At least that's what I want to believe.) All in all Netflix managed to take some of the main essence and put it into something alternate. You still see the original show, but you obviously realize the changes. And that's good. This was never supposed to be a copy & paste. Why would you watch a copy and paste when you already have the original? I think you have to be open to the changes and see this as an alternate reality of TLA. Aang will forever be the goofy kid in the animated show. And in this one, he's a little bit calmer. Aware. Anxious. But you can still see the child he was inspired by.

    No don’t apologize, you’re not being closed minded, it isn’t because you went into this having high expectations. You are spot on about this stick with your guts and quit apologizing. Netflix & Nickelodeon are garbage. Nickelodeon is using the Live Action Series to finally achieve what they always wanted to do kill Avatar The Last AirBender.

    I unfortunately don't like the adaptation. The characters just didn't feel like themselves, and there are some changes I just didn't vibe with, primarily around the fire nation. I hope you rind things to enjoy about it, it's just not for me.
