The fact the 41st division is Zuko's crew also makes Zuko lack of consideration/tolerance with them somewhat more sense. Sure, he doesn't need to be rude about it, that is just his sheltered prince/teen-ness showing, but... These people are why he lost his home, his family, his face. Any sign of them not having the perfect behaviour in his view is a display that sacrifice, which he stood for even as Ozai declared it (Zuko did not beg him to reconsider or anything), as something that was not worth it. "The weak can become great, if you give them a chance". Zuko paid for their chance with all he had, not knowing them at all, so now that he does... He expects them to prove to him it was worth it. Even though he doesn't ever explain that's the reason, I doubt he actually realizes it on a conscious level even to some extent.... And the fact he doesnt rub any of that reason on their faces no matter how 'stupid' they act, to me at least, also is a big hint of his redemption being something that was always possible and on the horizon.

I don't agree, the crew has nothing to do with him losing everything. Do not shift the blame, the only one at fault is Zuko, Iroh warned him about not talking and you can also blame Ozai. But the crew is innocent. They were literally a sacrifice and then they all got banned along side Zuko, none of them can return home just like Zuko and none of that was their fault. And I'll also react the same way, zukko was a pampered Prince and he was throwing tantrums all the time lol

@@sebastyann123 I dont think they are saying it's the crews fault. Just saying because zuko was against sacrificing them and spoke up about it, he got burned as a result, for being "soft" or having compassion, so I think that's part of the reason he treats them like that so he's not seen as soft, trying to be like his dad wants him to be, but I don't think he actually blames them in any way, but if he does it's not on purpose, he just hates the situation.

@@sebastyann123 oh i am 100% not saying it excuses zuko being an ass to them, just that explains a bit of why he is so if looking from his point of view alone, i agree as well the crew has no faultand should be respected. They stood by him all this time after all... but for someone with that heavy a trauma about needing to be perfect and merciless, lest he loses everything it makes sense he unconsciously ended up with zero tolerance of the crew especially having ANY flaw, however minor or unfair (only a flaw in his eyes). I also think anyone with his upbringing would react so hahaha what i mean is he is especislly critical of them in the show, and in my opinion st least, that might be why

@@purplequeen833 yeah exactly, ans them especially when handling them he ends up especially strict since they were whom he spoke up and got punished for, in a way. It doesnt mean its the crews fault or excuses him being that rude to them or ruthless, absolutely not, but definitely explains why he is so to a degree. When you look to the psychology of it on zukos side alone.

Best lore decision is the 41st. Lends to how much Zuko actually cares and that he didn't just defy orders. He defied them to save lives. That also lends to Iroh saying he knows sacrifice. Not just for being banished but because he stood up for those lives that would have been lost for in his eyes, nothing.

But there was a tiny detail I noticed about him how he mentioned the painful consequences and how friendships were a liability he was hinting about his former frienship with Sozin. So great for this series to explain how Zuko got his crew. Although I have to say that when they said the new recruits are expendable it's not worse than the way they phrased it in the original show: "What better to use as bait than fresh meat." Imo in the original show it wasn’t as bad, since saying “what better to use as bait than fresh meat” is just a really obviously evil line of dialogue. Simply referring to an entire squadron’s worth of lives as “expendable” is a lot more inhuman and impersonal and absolutely the kind of discussions that go on in real life military meetings

I don't think Ozai said it was his plan because he fed it to the general or because he appointed the general so the plans the general came up with are mine. I think Ozai said it was his plan because once he heard the general's idea Ozai agreed to it almost immediately like "that is a good idea advisor, I shall implement it." thereby taking the idea now as his own.

Yeah I was pretty confused watching it. It felt like a mess with just ignoring Hei Bai, hell I forgot about him in general. It's just a weird episode, Katara and Sokka in the Spirit World somehow to getting trapped by Koh and Aang needing to go see Roku cause he knows how to beat Koh. And the spirit they were trying to calm seemed like he was just out how taking people for a few more days before Aang decided to help. It didn't feel like a good resolution along with having Katara and Sokka just absent for an episode.

  • @withxoutxlife

@@Al7249 In the episode where Aang was captured by Zhao, Sokka and Katara were also basically out of commission the entire episode while Aang was searching for their cure, so I find this excusable, and also a less cartoony plot more befitting the live action. The Hei Bai storyline was technically resolved last episode when Aang planted the seed in front of Hei Bai's shrine, as an offering to the forest. Though we didn't see its full resolution with Hei Bai reverting to his non-aggressive form, like in the cartoon, it was implied. Since Koh was the one that had Sokka and Katara hostage in the live action, it makes sense that he was the one that Aang needed to appease this episode and resolve things with.

I had no idea about the 41st division being Zuko’s crew! I watched this only one time and must’ve missed it! I’m surprised that the animated show didn’t pull off something like this! I do enjoy this episode, but there are some things about it that I still don’t like. The Blue Spirit fight should’ve been a little longer. Also, they clearly used Roku’s moment for Kyoshi. I was a little disappointed with Avatar Roku. He was one of my favorite characters when I was younger. Katara and Sokka didn’t need to be out of the show for this long though. That part of disappointing. They are pretty important characters, and if you’re going to only have 8 episodes, you shouldn’t take them out for that long. I’ll say it again though, Chao is surprisingly really good in the show. The actor is very good and better than I thought he’d be. The Agni Kai is really good, but it is still weird to me seeing it on screen because I actually like that the animated show doesn’t show it. It’s somewhat chilling, and adds more impact. Speaking on the length of streaming show seasons, I really feel like 10 episodes is the optimal amount. 8 should be the minimum and 12 the maximum. Like the whole 6 episode special event thing clearly wasn't working at all for Disney+ and while some Netflix show can work fine with 8, two more episodes would've given the stories more breathing room.

Ozai wanted Zuko to be menacing even in his tactics, aside from being a bit distracted, Zuko's plan was lackluster but mostly because he never thought of sacrificing his men to the battle field. Ozai was disappointed and deemed Zuko not ready, but that was pushed to the edge when Zuko called the general's plan terrible. Which is totally out of turn. Remember Zuko later tells Iroh that there is a 'way they do things' like ranks, etc. that gossip isn't even allowed. I feel like even if he was the prince, Ozai didn't see him ready and then called the general he chosen as ineffective. So he taught him a 'lesson' to have him more apathetic and menacing. This Ozai is a bit more human, which is great since this adaptation is more grounded. But of course we know Zuko was never wired that way. I really liked how Netflix pushed this arc of Zuko in the forefront, I feel like it'll be a nice journey for Netflix Zuko in Book 2 and 3 (hoping they all get made)

Also, for the whole top knot thing, that doesn't happen this season. Even in the cartoon. It happens at the end of season 2 episode 1. Where they decide it's better to be captured by Earth Kingdom than Azula. The thing I didn't like is how useless they made Roku. He was slightly helpful but then ruined it by dismissing the power of friendship but the thing they added that I love the best of this series is making the 41st Zuko's crew AND Zuko + Aang discussing after Zuko saved him from Zhao. Dallas Liu really killed it as Zuko.

Binging thru your reactions now, and I loved this episode. Being very faithful to the first time we see the blue spirit(blue mask) and how he rescues Aang. Instead of not talking like their first meeting they talked in the hut. It gave me a feeling of how young both are and not much different. Koh was made so perfectly creepy. Zuko's backstory with how he got his scar and all the extra they put into that Agni Kai that wasn't in the original. I loved how it look much more sadistic what Ozai did to him. And tying in the crew to the one he rescued. Zuko feeling a sort of happy at his welcome back and Iroh proud. So much good detail. This might of become my favorite episode so far. Though the scenes with Iroh before had me crying.

Love this episode! There was only one thing I didnt like about it, and it was that Zuko tried to fight his father in the agni kai cause it is much more impactful to get it for choosing not to vs getting it from losing, and it takes away the explanation for why he was also banished. That was it though, still great.

The pre-hate for these remakes, or just remakes in general, is that fans, especially those who “grew up” with the “originals” are not afraid that they’ll ruin their favorite shows. I’ve been saying for years, the worse thing that can happen is that these remakes turn out GOOD. Because the M. Knight movie didn’t ruin the cartoon by being bad. Fans are worried that their favorite shows will be forgotten in favor of new good adaptations.

The problem is that they take it as an insult. They see someone adapting their favourite media, and their immediate reaction is "they're saying they can make a better version of the thing I already like". Stories have been retold, and reinterpreted for thousands of years, and suddenly that's apparently a bad thing, according to some people.

I like the live action version of why Ozai declared Agni Kai. The original/animated always felt like Ozai did it simply because Zuko spoke out of turn. Although Iron does explain that by speaking against the general, he was speaking against Ozai as well... it doesn't really click as well compared to the live action. Here, Ozai clearly agreed with the general's plan and decided to implement it but then Zuko called it a stupid plan, indirectly calling Ozai stupid. Nothing like calling your own father stupid to make the father lose face. In traditional and conservative Asian cultures, such actions would result in a beating/belting by the father. In this case, an Agni Kai with a burning lesson. I would not be surprised if anyone else who understands the traditional conservative Asian values to recognize this situation pretty quickly and why Ozai punished Zuko. Also, this is one of the moments where it's shown, not told.

There is one thing I didnt like about this episode. Irohs shrine is on his island and Ang flew there. How the hell did June get there this fast? Like that made no sense she would need a ship and even then it wouldnt be fast enough. So the writers teleported her to be there. That aside, I fucking LOVED the twist with the 41. division

Was strange how Roku didn't lend his power to Aang in this moment either. We were shown in Episode 2 that Kiyoshi was well aware Zuko's crew were attacking the island. Roku should have been equally aware of both the firesages _and_ Jun waiting for Aang outside the shrine. He left the little guy hanging!

I wouldn’t say that Iroh was “standing up to” Ozai. More like just trying to be a buffer between him and Zuko. Iroh ordinarily wouldn’t stand up to Ozai, partially because he is the Fire Lord, and partially because Ozai is a stronger firebender and fighter than Iroh is. Like Iroh said in the original series, he doesn’t know if he could defeat Ozai.

I rather suspect we're going to lose the entire desert/library/appa subplot (which is why we got the owl in the last episode, as they incorporated several 'spirit' threads into one), and they'll incorporate finding out about the eclipse in some other manner.
