This is why college football is as big as it is here in the US. Professional football has NOTHING on college football when it comes to tradition and the sense of community. I love it because it allows a lot of these amateur players who’ll never make it to the pros a chance to experience that kind of atmosphere and share it with their families and communities. Most college football players will finish their education and go on to live normal lives but they can always look back on their college football days as that final portion of their lives where they were still athletes and possibly contributed to something special for their schools and cities.

@@OpusWon true but for every Bears v Packers in the NFL you have Ohio State-Michigan, Army-Navy, Texas-Oklahoma, Auburn-Alabama etc. Not saying NFL doesn’t have tradition but it doesnt have anything near the nationwide reach that college does. And college also does this for smaller towns and cities that otherwise wouldn’t have something to root for and that’s what makes it more special imo.

The Michigan vs Ohio rivalry goes back further than even the creation of football. The two state nearly went to war with each other in the 1830s over a border dispute before the federal government stepped in.

Native Michigander and UofM alum here. As I understand it, there actually was a brief "war" and the feds did indeed step in. Since OH was a state and MI was still just a territory, the feds sided with OH but gave MI the upper peninsula as some sort of consolation prize -- thereby screwing WI (which was not yet a territory) in the process. Or so the story goes.

  • @chazmichaelmichaels88

@@nancysexton4364 Michigan had already claimed the upper peninsula, Ohio had no interest in it. So technically, Michigan was just given statehood and allowed to keep what theu claimed. They lost Toledo and nearly went bankrupt trying to support their militia there. So, Ohio clearly won. P.S. later on, the Lake Erier boundary was being disputed again, Michigan vs Ohio. Ohio won that as well.

There is so much copper and other rare metals in the area, there is over $2 billion in copper and $78 million in just one deposit that has yet to be mined. At one point the UP supplied nearly all of the copper used in the US. To be fair, Ohio didn't know about the scar running across the UP and down into the lower peninsula... but they absolutely took an L giving up trillions and trillions in rare metals. Copper has been mined on and off for over 7,000 years in the UP (Isle Royale has very old primitive mining settlements from the indigenous people)

Another good rivalry game is Oklahoma - Texas, played on the “neutral” field in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. Almost equidistant between the two schools, the stadium is split at the 50-yard line with more or less an equal number of fans in each half of the bowl. It is also at the State Fair of Texas so there’s a festival atmosphere always. Back in the day, the night before the area in Dallas at Commerce and Main would be closed off as fans got lubed up and often very rowdy. Lots would be arrested, but in the morning if sober and unless they were charged with something serious, they would be released in time for the game.

Keep in mind that a lot of the kids grow up in the same state as the college teams they play for. So people in that state have followed their football "careers" for several years before they enter college. Also, the pressure to play for their local college can be intense. Some kids have received death threats for not joining the local college team, or leaving the state to play college football. And of course, money, jobs, and girls are always part of the recruitment package for the best players.

We have a similar rivalry in Texas called the “red river rivalry” between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Once October 9th comes around like clockwork you can almost guarantee people aren’t showing up to work the next day especially if TX wins.

Grew up with this rivalry on the Michigan side. Attended UofM myself (my parents both graduated from there and my grandpa was a Dean there for some time). Tickets to this game are crazy expensive and if you are a season ticket holder you can often make all of your money back by selling that one ticket (but the last few years, I don't think many are willing to miss the game).

If you go to the grocery store here in Ohio even in my small town of about 2000… The grocery store will be packed if you go there in the morning with everybody getting everything they want for the game. I figured if there was ANYONE who could understand this, it would be our British cousins. Thank you for not treating this as, “silly.” The Game is one of the few defining aspects of being from the Midwest. L.A. and New York can have their glamor but these institutions are the cultural pivot that provide us with our orbits of cultural and geographic tradition. It’s a game… but it’s not a joke. I’m now in the south but don’t think for a moment-when I see a Michigan sweatshirt on some pedestrian going by… 400 miles away from the field of battle-I don’t scream, “Go Bucks” because I will. And I’m almost 40 years removed from my college days 😉 Cheers, mates

I think that was an ad you might see in any given year when the rivalry is about to begin. That's what it felt like anyway. I'm sure there is a video of similar length that demonstrates how many times each team has killed a legitimate title chance for the other, or the "mere" victory of winning the division. A brief explanation of "The Ten Year War" FFS. Something better than that clap trap. Not that I'm going to F'ing look it up. I don't want the heat of choosing the wrong video. Anyway, love you guys. To answer Office Bloke Mike's question: some of the football rivalries aren't called rivalries. They are called the Battle of/For something. Or in the case of Alabama vs. Tennessee. That game is known as the The Third Saturday in October because that is when it is played. But games like Texas vs Oklahoma are called the Red River Rivalry so it just varies. I hope this helps. Georgia VS Florida is good one. I was born in Ohio so this rivalry I ALWAYS watch. I live in Ga now so all I hear is how the northern conferences don't compare to SEC teams. I can tell you there's been an odd shift where SEC teams were always much more physical and played a more hardened ground game and northern teams were more technical but utilized their QT's arm. Now there's quite a mix of both in every conference.

Nothing beats THE GAME when everything is on the line for both schools! The iron bowl is good as is the red river showdown or fsu v Miami. But rarely do these rivalries have the implications THE GAME has had historically. The thing that makes the iron bowl so big is that the entire state of Alabama loses their freaking poop. The Ohio michigan war often pulls most of the big ten into it with half hating a good michigan team and most everyone hating ohio st. Plus this last Nov, nearly 16 million people tuned into fox to watch the game, probably more since that may not account for all the people watching bars and restaurants. If you ever make it to a michigan game and it's not ohio st., it needs to be michigan st and the battle for Paul bunyan.

If you want to get the full college football atmosphere, I'd do one of the following: OSU vs Michigan OSU vs Penn State ND vs USC (if the game is at ND) Auburn vs Alabama LSU vs Alabama Oklahoma vs Texas Georgie vs Florida There's obviously other games out there, but these are the biggest stadiums, the most iconic teams, and the craziest crowds. Notre Dame is coming to Columbus to play OSU this year (and vice versa next year). They are two icons of CFB that rarely ever play each other, especially in their home stadiums, so that could also be an interesting one.

OSU loses their first string QB, then they lose big early in the season, then they lose their 2nd string QB, then a teammate kills himself, and still they go on to go 59-0 against a great Wisconsin team, beat #1 Alabama in a game no one thought they had a chance in, then finish it off with a win over #2 Oregon, all with their 3rd string QB and the world against them. And most of the players in all the final games went on to be big time NFL players.
