I’m a Georgia fan, but this is undoubtedly the biggest rivalry game in college football, maybe in American sports. Michigan hadn’t won in a decade, plus a spot in their conference’s championship game and the playoff were on the line here. Ohio State has been one of the top 3 most dominant teams in CFB for the better part of a decade. You can see why the Michigan fans/players went insane when they pulled it out. It’s called “The Game” for a reason.

This is the only "major sports rivalry" in College Football that's about far more than sports, it's State vs State. It actually started as a territorial border dispute in 1835 (The Toledo War). Decades before "College Football" was even a thing. As a Buckeye, we should still have plenty to be happy about, but now it's all for nothing. That's what this game means. 10-2 Record: Don't mean shit Bowl Eligibility: Don't mean shit Big 10 performing good in general: Doesn't mean shit. If you don't win "The Game", the rest of the season, Doesn't.....mean......shit.....

Not saying it compares, but Clemson and South Carolina is not about sports either. South Carolina was founded in 1801. The state legislature wanted to create a university that had more of an agricultural purpose in the late 19th century, and South Carolina hated it because it would take away from their university, and several members of South Carolina’s congress threatened to resign if the bill was passed. Despite this, Clemson was founded in 1889, and was immediately looked down upon and labeled as a “cow college” by South Carolina. Clemson is still looked down upon by many people in South Carolina despite Clemson dominating the rivalry in football, and Clemson being the best public university in the state. The sports rivalry is just a physical manifestation of the politics that caused Clemson to be created.

And yes it did start with the border war. In the long run Michigan got the better part in that also. The upper peninsula was worth so much more than that little strip of land.

Not a fan of either team, but this game is arguably the biggest rivalry in North America. Every time they play there is playoff/championship implications. Not to mention the bragging rights for a year. What makes this an even bigger rivalry is there was an actual war between Ohio and Michigan in the 1800s where they fought over Toledo.

It's called, "The Game" in the media and it's often talked about as the biggest rivalry in all American sports. As a lifelong Michigan fan, I was in tears as the students and other fans celebrated on the field after the win. #97 Aiden Hutchinson - the one who was all over the place on defense- is being touted as the #1 or 2 pick in next years NFL draft.

1969, Bo's first year. OSU was on a 18 or 19 game winning streak. They were #1 in the nation in 1969 and had been #1 in 1968. Michigan was something like 9 and 3 and no way were they going to win. Michigan won in Ann Arbor 24 to 12. That was the beginning of the 10 year war. The best game I ever saw. I think Hutchinson deserves Heisman consideration. Stroud did have a good game personally (394 yds, 2 tds, no picks), Young (Alabama QB) had a lousy game in the Iron bowl, managed to eek out a win, but wasn't a good game for him. Hutchinson has been playing at this level all year, I think its time another Defensive player from Michigan got their ticket punched to New York and the Heisman.

Loved your reaction. Only wished you’d picked a different highlight reel to react to. Several of them show slow mo replays on some of the big plays that really highlight the athleticism on both sides. I’m a huge Michigan fan but the receiving corps of OSU is insane. Some of their catches were God-tier. Michigan’s Haskins’ hurdle is beautiful in slow mo. Also this video misses all the chippiness between the two teams. A near fight broke out in the tunnel while the teams went into their locker rooms at half. Then a near brawl broke out on the field at one point in the 2nd half. These two teams despise each other!

Great video. A couple of things...you mentioned the crowd a couple of times. The TV doesn't do it justice. If you're at Michigan Stadium in person, it seems to go on forever. Over 111,000 fans showed up for this one. Next, this rivalry was named by ESPN as the most intense in North American sports. These two schools do not like each other. This was a massive win for Michigan, probably the biggest since the 1998 Rose Bowl that gave them their last national title. And the biggest win in the rivalry since the famous 1969 upset of Ohio State. Michigan Stadium has also played host to a few Premiere League friendlies, which packed the place. That yellow is a shade called maize.

I'm a Michigan fan (spent every weekend growing up going to Michigan football and hockey games) who had to move to where Ohio State is located for work. The city of Columbus has been *silent* for the last week, and I am living for it. When I was a kid, Michigan owned the rivalry, and it's been a long time since Michigan has been this dominant in a game against Ohio State. This is hopefully the beginning of a return to form for Michigan. College football is so much better when these two teams are both amongst the elite.

Let me tell you a story about my dad....the greatest Michigan fan of all-time.... He grew up in Dearborn, MI the oldest of eight. His dad....my grandfather...worked as a tool and die maker at the Ford Motor Company and actually was chosen by Lee Iacocca to head up the tool and die room during the development of the Ford Mustang. But since there were eight kids to feed, clothe, and educate....my grandfather worked two or three jobs most of his life. So money was tight and it was expensive to send eight kids through parochial school. My dad played on the High School football team....both offensive and defensive line....and was a big, big Michigan fan. After the Friday night football game, dad would ask the people at the game if they were going to Ann Arbor on Saturday to the Michigan game. If he could get a ride he would. Otherwise, he'd hitch hike to Ann Arbor. Of course he had no money for a ticket so what to do? Jump the fence! This was 1947-1950. Michigan Stadium was nothing then like it is now. Hopping the fence was easy. Would you believe it if I told you my dad saw every Michigan home game in 1947,1948,1949 and 1950 this exact way. He saw back to back National Champions in '47 and '48 and never paid a dime. Not because he didn't want to but because he dreamed of playing for Michigan and just didn't have the money. But what he had was a passion for Michigan football like no one else I've ever known or heard about. Nothing would stop him from being close to the team he hoped to play for. He once got his pants caught on fence and the attendants threw him out. But he snuck in during halftime and saw the last two quarters. My family moved to Indiana just before my eighth birthday. And I graduated from Indiana University. But like my dad I will always be a Michigan Man at heart. GO BLUE!

It was, "2 - 10 - and 1! 2 - 10 - and 1!" ...We were up big in 4th qtr in their house and they're coach, John Cooper, had a record against Michigan of 2-9-1 that was minutes away from getting worse. He was fired shortly after the Game. #GOBLUE!!!

Michigan fan here. This game specifically meant so much to us. It's been forever since we've won this game vs. the buckeyes, but we finally pulled it off. And to add insult to injury, this is the same officiating crew that screwed us over back in '16 with that absolute garbage spot on the 4th down. The head ref of the crew is a known Ohio State fan. So to come out and beat them with that same officiating crew is one of the best things we could ask for. Then there's the fact that Ryan Day (Ohio State's head coach) was trash talking us last year, saying he was gonna put a hundred points on us. Guess that didn't go to well for him. Jim Harbaugh (Michigan's head coach) just pulled off the biggest win of his career. But it's not just him. It's also Josh Gattis (Michigan's Offensive Coordinator) and Mike McDonell (Michigan's Defensive Coordinator). And all those seniors like David Ojabo and Aiden Hutchinson and Hassan Haskins, and the tons of other players. Freshman QB JJ McCarthy also had an outstanding game, so did Freshman Donavan Edwards. It was a combination of the whole team that finally ended the 10 year loosing streak. Now hopefully we'll take it all the way and win the CFB playoffs. GO BLUE!

This game was the perfect storm of special circumstances that ignited extreme passion in both the Michigan players and fans. But, first, some background. Both teams play in the Big 10 conference. The conference used to have a rule which allowed only one team to play in a 'bowl game", which was back then considered to be a reward in the form of a warm weather vacation in a nice locale to play another conference champion for bragging rights on New Year's Day in front of a national TV audience. In particular, the Big 10 had a contract with the Rose Bowl in suburban Los Angeles to play the champion of the Pac 8 conference. For 10 years, from 1968 - 1978, Michigan played Ohio State in the last regular season game, and the outcome of the game always (I think) had a bearing on which team went to play in the Rose Bowl. The other team got nothing for what might otherwise have been a fine season. No Big 10 conference title. No trip to the Rose Bowl, just the chance to watch their bitter rival play another big game on TV on New Year's Day. Both teams had great hall of fame coaches. Both teams were pretty much equally matched. These games came to be called "The Ten Year War" and have a special place in the history of college football. Once the Big 10 opened up other bowl games to the conference also rans, the all-or-nothing import of The Game was diminished. The loser still went to a nice, warm weather Bowl Game, but the hatred from the Ten Year War continued unabated. Gradually, OSU came to have the upper hand and win most of the matches, but both OSU and U of M have had rough patches that lasted for years. In 2021, it seems the "all or nothing" aura had returned to The Game. The winner would become the champion of the East Division of the B1G 10 and play in the conference championship game. If it prevailed against what is perceived as a weaker champ of the West Div., then one of the four slots in the nation's college football playoff would be theirs as a likely #2 seed, which meant playing a lower seed in the first round. The stakes for last Saturday's game were humongous. Losing eight straight had made people wonder if Michigan would ever win The Game again. OSU was pretty much chosen by everybody to win The Game this year, so watching the underdog pull off the upset with so much on the line was just the recipe to send all those wildly elated fans out onto the field to celebrate. Pass-oriented offenses are always more flashy, and put up more points on the scoreboard, if only because incomplete passes stop the game clock and overall allow for more offensive possessions. A run-oriented team will always seem somehow lacking by comparison. Running plays let the game clock run, so the final scores and the margin of victory tend to be lower and less impressive. Michigan emphasized the run all year long, and wags found them nowhere near as impressive as OSU and its flashy pass attack. Back during the Ten Year War, both teams emphasized the run over the pass. For Michigan fans, seeing them shove the ball right down the throats of the OSU defense harkened back to the glory of the wins in the midst of the Ten Year War.

The one from the "Rose Bowl or Nothing" era that got really ugly was the 1973 game. Michigan and Ohio State both came into that game with perfect records, and battled to a 10-10 tie. Since there was no head-to-head winner and the rivals were tied atop the conference standings, the athletic directors of the Big 10 schools voted which team would go to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State won that vote 6 to 4, which caused a huge uproar. Even then-Vice President of the United States Gerald Ford (who was from Michigan) spoke out against the decision. A Michigan grad student even tried to file a lawsuit, though that went nowhere after the University of Michigan refused to endorse it.

You were actually 100% correct about OSU letting Michigan score at 13:58. OSU knows they need to get the ball back to have a chance, and wasting more time on defense just gives them less time to score. Michigan's best play there would actually be to not score on that play, let some more time run down or force OSU to use their time outs, and then kick a field goal on 4th down, leaving OSU still down 2 scores with much less time to do anything about it. It all worked out in the end anyways, but there have been games where teams have accidentally scored a touchdown late in the game and lost because they left too much time on the clock. Last year's game between the Lions and Falcons ended with the Lions winning on a last minute drive down the field because the Falcons accidentally scored.

    @kay_sou

    2 жыл бұрын

@@djentyman4002 The idea would be that you go for 2 when you absolutely need to. If you're down 15, score a touchdown, and fail a 2pt conversion, you're now down 9, still a 2 possession game. If you just get the 1 point now, it puts more pressure on the opponent's offense, because it's a one score game. The hope would be that your defense can force a stop and then you get your 2 points when you absolutely need to, or, if there's still enough time, go for 1 again, hope you can get another stop and a field goal to win. OSU played too sloppy though and couldn't stop Haskins, so it ultimately didn't matter.

I know this is a few days late so hopefully you see this. One thing I'd suggest doing (either on your own time or in recordings) is something I've started doing myself. Whenever you see a big run, go back and really break down the blocking that takes place for the running back to be able to run through. It's really amazing to see how quick these big guys move when you pay attention to it.

It sucks that the video cut it off, but the fans stormed the field and the entire field was covered in maize and blue, with the stands still full. I suggest checking out a video of the end. Here’s a bit of info regarding the rivalry… the reason it’s called the biggest rivalry in all of sports (up there with El Classico) is because it’s bigger than just sports. Historically, Michigan and Ohio battled it out over the territory of Toledo. “The Great Toledo War” began a huge rivalry between the state of Michigan and and the state of Ohio. The University of Michigan and The Ohio State University encapsulate this rivalry like no other, first and foremost in football, but also in basketball, hockey, baseball, and pretty much any sport at all. Not only that, but they are also academic rivals, with both schools holding prestigious academic standards. Finally, I want to mention how huge of a shift this was from last year. Michigan’s last win was in 2011. The only reason OSU only won 8 games in 9 years is because Michigan had to cancel games due to COVID. If we had not cancelled The Game last year, we would have gotten a historical ass-whooping. 2020 Michigan was one of the worst Michigan teams I’ve ever seen, and 2021 OSU was a championship-caliber team. In addition, there has been a huge talent, coaching, and culture gap for the past 2 decades. OSU did not get complacent and overlook us because of their dominance. Their dominance is largely because of a culture built around beating Michigan and winning games they have to win. Every day they step into their locker room, a timer counts down until The Game, serving as a permanent reminder that they have to beat Michigan. This year, Michigan adopted a similar culture around beating Ohio State throughout the entire offseason and regular season. Each practice included a “Beat Ohio” drill. The locker room and weight room had “What are YOU doing to beat Ohio State today?” plastered all over the walls. Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh cleaned house and completely revamped the coaching staff, which provided a younger development team that reinvigorated our players. Last year, OSU Head Coach Ryan Day said he would “hang 100” on Michigan. I have no doubt in my mind that, if we had played The Game last year, that would have come true and OSU would have dropped over 100 points on us. This year, things went differently, from the off-season, to the season, to The Game, and hopefully tonight (and moving forward) the post-season as well. Glad to see someone accustomed to global football enjoying American football. Now you have a taste of why we go so crazy for it.

In 1969 I watched on TV the heavily favored defending national champs and still number team that year, Ohio State Buckeyes lose to Michigan in Ann Arbor. It was that game which made me a Michigan fan even though I live in New York. Legendary Michigan head football coach and former assistant at Ohio State, Bo Schembelcher's first year at Michigan beats legendary Ohio State head coach and Schembelcher mentor, Woody Hayes 24 -12. It was the start of what was called the 10 year war between these two schools and coaches. Michigan would win that series with a 5-4-1 record. Always a Big Ten title at stake and sometimes a national championship. I watched all ten, screaming for Michigan. My friends never understood why on late November afternoon I told them I'd catch up with them later. Michigan and Ohio State were playing and there was nothing that was going tear me away from that. Biggest rivalry though? No. That distinction goes to Army-Navy. Go Blue. Go Army.

I remember that game. At the time, the Big 10 had a "no repeat" rule regarding the Rose Bowl--no team was allowed to go to Pasadena two years in a row. When it looked as though Ohio State was headed for the Rose Bowl, there was pressure to repeal the "no-repeat" rule--which later was done--but Michigan's victory over the Buckeyes made this issue moot. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, the University of Southern California Trojans won a spectacular victory over hte UCLA Bruins on November 22,1969 to win a trip to Pasadena, where they beat the Wolverines to usher in the 1970's.

If Michigan wins they’re almost 100% in the college football playoff for the first time. PS this is the greatest rivalry in all of American football. This past weekend was the final week of the College Football Regular season. The last week always ends on “Rivalry weekend” where all teams usually play their rival teams. Alabama/Auburn, Michigan/Ohio State, Ole/Mississippi State, Georgia/Georgia Tech, Oklahoma/Oklahoma State, Kentucky/Louisville, Clemson/South Carolina, Florida/ Florida State, and etc. Though there were 3 major games this past weekend. The Game (Michigan/Ohio State) winner decided who would go on to their conference championship, The Iron Bowl (Alabama and Auburn) Alabama who had already clinched their spot in a conference championship was playing to not get upset and ended up going to 4 overtimes, and the Bedlam series (Oklahoma and Oklahoma State) both playing to remain playoff contenders and loser pretty much got eliminated. I suggest watching the highlights of the other two games as they both were insane and went down to the wire. Next weekend is conference championship week where the championship games from all 10 conferences play. And after those games are played, on Sunday the 4 team playoff will be announced and those teams will go on to play to win a National championship.

@@operator0 buddy, this rival is infused way back before 1897 over state borders. It is so entrenched that even if you cross into the Toledo area, you get targeted and receive egregious tickets from Ohio police just because your license plate is Michigan, and vice versa for Ohioans. It’s heavily engrained into both states, how much they dislike each other. When those teams play, it’s over that anger towards each other. It was nice watching Florida demolish them when they played in the national championship though in 2006. To help put this win into perspective, Ohio State was ranked as the second best football team in the country and Michigan was ranked #5. Ohio State had beaten Michigan State the previous week - scoring 49 points in the first half of the game alone and Michigan's only loss to that point was against Michigan State. So it was particularly savory to win so convincingly against a highly ranked Ohio State team - and to win at home made it even more satisfying.

Michigan grad here. This game meant so much to the fanbase and my family. I was a student the last time Michigan beat OSU and was at the game with my mom (also a grad) and grandpa and brother (both attended but didn't graduate). My brother died very suddenly last year and my grandpa now has severe dimentia. While watching the game though, a cardinal sat on the window sill and literally watched the game with us. There's a belief that cardinals are loved ones checking in to say they're ok- we like to think it was Dan. Also, my grandpa waa lucid the whole day despite his dimentia. It was halfway through the 4th when we all started to realize...holy crap we're going going to win, first time in 10 years, the streak is over. We're going to Indy to play for a conference championship for the first time in 17 years, and we're likely the playoffs. My mom cried, I fought back tears, and my was "with it" for one more win. This game won't bring back my brother,it won't cure my grandpa, it won't solve the world's problems. But for that day, my family felt pure joy for the first time inany, many years.
