The way the rule is written, AS SOON as a QB starts to slide, he has officially given himself up and is effectively tackled and the ball is spotted at its location when he began the slide. So he could slide 10 feet and it wouldn't change the placement of the ball. In other words, there's never a reason to hit a QB when they slide like that.

The Myles Garrett play where he stripped the helmet off and used it as a club to hit the QB (Mason Rudolph) came awfully close to being a criminal act well beyond the scope of 'heat of competition', as it were. A lot of people were of the opinion he could have been charged with assault for it since hitting someone like that can legitimately kill them. A couple of these are incidental contact, but for the most part, yeah... the only explanation for a late hit is to be a prick, nothing more. The hits on Flacco, Bridgewater, Sproles and Wentz were ESPECIALLY dirty, because in all four cases they were either defenseless players or giving themselves up. Still furious that the late hit was never called on Clowney for spearing Wentz in the back of the head, in particular. Wentz had a serious concussion because of it and it almost certainly cost the eagles in the playoffs.

Some if those clips were from college games. Some of their rules are different from the NFL. One big diff is in college ball the player with the ball is down when he makes contact with the ground, even if he is never touched by the other team (like if he trips by himself). In the NFL the ball carrier can get back off the ground and continue his run if he is NOT touched by the other team. But not in college....he is down whether he is touched or nit.not. (PS...another difference is the 2-feet "in bounds" in the NFL. but in college only 1 foot is necessary)

11:05 weird but important distinction, its not when he "hits the deck", its when he starts the slide. Every other ball carrier gets whats called "forward progress" which is the ball being placed as far forward as you ever got, but QBs get the exact opposite. The ball is placed/spotted at the furthest spot back, this is done as gesture of good faith for not hitting the most important player on the team. Most QuarterBacks slow up and try to make it obvious because if you take a hit while sliding your body takes more damage. Its really dirty to hit a sliding QB and also very rare

In my opinion the punt returns are the worst. You’re looking up at the ball waiting to catch it and you wave for a fair catch, which means you catch it and wherever you are, that’s where you will start. Calling a fair catch also means you can’t be hit. So when you’re looking up at the ball and wave a fair catch you’re not expecting to be hit, especially by someone who just ran 30-40+ yards and has a shit ton of momentum on them

Some of these are college games. In college rules as soon as a ball carrier is down (even if untouched) (even if he goes to a knee to make the catch) the ball is dead and the play is over. In the NFL any time a quarterback goes into a feet first (baseball) slide, he has given himself up and the play is over. The QBs are at fault as well though for some of those hits. On occasion a QB will try to be clever and as the defensive player is pulling up the QB will try to get a few extra yards before completing the slide or stepping out of bounds. He better be ready for a big hit the next time he carries the ball!! Also the clip where the guy ran on and wiped out the official was a high school game. The conference suspended the player (I think for a year) and also because the coach did not control his player the team was removed from the state championship playoffs which they would have qualified for. Of course in typical fashion the school and some of the parents are suing to get the team reinstated. So much for teaching the kids about consequences for your actions.

I don’t know if anyone told you but the player who hit the ref over a call he didn’t agree with was a great high school player who lost his scholarship and no one picked him up. He further made it worse by holding news conference saying the college coaches were racist!??

The rule for quarterbacks is that if they give themselves up, like sliding or going down on one knee, that the play is over and no contact is allowed. It's a difficult situation on the defensive players because they have already committed to tackling the quarterback.

The guy that run onto the field and flatted the ref was a high school player. That made the nation news in the US. That kid was kicked off off the team and was not allowed to play in any sports for his remaining time in school. He was good enough to play in college but I don't know what happened in regards to that.

Once he starts to slide there can be no contact with the QB. 11:17 I think that's Teddy Bridgewater that was KO'd. He revitalized his career with the New Orleans Saints when Drew Brees was injured and then signed with the Denver Broncos and has been playing well.

Nice bad hits.. see, I told you guys, Dave should pick the Browns, Mike the Steelers.. great rivalry they have, and I think its less then 90 miles between the two stadiums, so both games have fans from the visiting team showing up. should do reaction to the browns final home game in 95. fans ripped the seats up, threw them on the field.. they had to actually make the players change sides each time one team passed the 50 yard line going towards the "Dawg Pound" fans side. did any of you go to the game today (October 10, 2021) in London? or have any of you gone to any previous NFL games played there?
