Here you have the process I went through to make a traditional style Oak side gate. It's European Oak and all timber machined from sawn state to then dimensioned down to make the rails, stiles, book matched slats, cross braces and the head of the door.
I use a V grove half lap for the slats and rebate them into the styles and head of the door then use solid oak dowels to fix them to the cross braces.
All in all a very enjoyable project and can't find words to describe how beautiful it actually looks in real life.
Finished with Osmos UV protection oil in a satin finish to help make it last the test of time.
