The best video on lasers I’ve seen man. Thank you, way easier to digest than a bunch of spec sheets. Also I’m starting to look at a nods setup, and so this was super helpful.

Holosun updated their lasers and they work with the Insight-style tape switches now. I have mine rigged up with my white light using a Surefire dual end tape switch and it works great. The biggest downside for me is that the laser sits extremely high. You need a 1.93" mount to get a good sight picture with an LPVO.

The problem is the battery on the streamlight you have to remove the device to change the battery and thus have to re zero all the time ... and these batteries are not lasting not 1-3 years you changing them regularly.

The new holosun’s run with standard crane hooks now. Send your unit in and they’ll replace it & the QD mount has been improved!

I bought the Holosun LSG321 and it the surefire pressure pads fit it. I have surefire scout and run the surefire dual pressure pad, no issues. The mount I do not like, and after using the quick disconnect lever to secure it, I then tighten screw making the quick disconnect useless, but it will never come off under fire.

I've gotta ask, what color is the danger sticker on your unit? The newer ones I've seen have yellow stickers while the older have white stickers.

The holosun uses a standard crane plug. So you can use the surefire dual switches or the mod light ones. I have the mod light ones and they are excellent

I'm lovin my C1+ as well! It slays! Also a good option is the surefire x400v.. really good illuminator and laser. Good spot and spill.. only rub is the white light/ ir switching is the bezel. Still a great option for sub $1000. Built tough too

one of the downsides of a higher powered laser is visibility to your target. The peq-15's and 16's we use in the military are kinda cool in that you have a solid beam of light (like a lightsaber) to your target, but that also means that you have that same lightsaber tracing all the way back to you, so now your enemy knows exactly where to shoot.

Hey Jon, When you mentioned a vis override with the mawl, does that process to go from IR to vis still require the rotation of the front cap before activating with a unity sync/taps? I couldn't find anything on tap-rack but I'm prob missing something.

No, it's a link to make your switch activate a white light and green laser at the same time if the mawl is dialed to vis

Got a quick question for you. Is the ir laser cover for the Dbal a3 a neutral Density filter? Mean does it just reduce the power of the IR laser or does it block it completely?

They block completely. Not like the ones on the PEQ.

Did you say the Perst lasers don't get warranty work? Because multiple people have reported good warranty service from Zenitco. It's pretty much the only full power laser us civilians can get full warranty support on.

Question, about the L3’s and BE Meyers and other milspec IR devices that have visible and IR lasers; if you zero the visible laser will the IR laser be zeroed as well? Coming out of same channel no?

Depends on the laser, mawls and peqs both have slaved ir and vis lasers. If you move one the other is also adjusted. The PEQ have a separate adjustment for the ir illuminator

If your a “poor” the best mid line is the A3 in my opinion. 75 yds and in yay. Best overall MAWL that price though ouch.

Good review. If you flip the mount around on the holosun it won't undo by itself. Also I don't know if they changed something but mine accepts surefire pads.

Dbal a2? They pop up from time to time but the average person is screwed if it breaks unless you know someone. Just curious your opinion on it.

I’m running a mk18 rail. I want to mount a modlite at the 3 o’clock. Which mount do u recommend where it won’t interfere with the MAWL? The only thing I could think of was the the Arisaka Picatinny mount upside down. Any suggestions? Thanks man!

Arisaka is a good choice. You can also find a surefire DF body that has the thumb screw for pic. Mostly your problem is the pic rail

The Holosun website shows the QD latch on the opposite side than you have it. If you reverse it, that might solve the problem of it coming loose under recoil.

Hi John, I know you're a huge proponent of the MAWL (but realistically, I don't think I can justify 3k for my needs and purposes of more occasional recreational shooting). What are your thoughts on the DBALA3? The ATPIAL-C just got a huge price hike and is rarely in stock (besides TNVC) - the DBAL is cheaper and seems to be a direct competitor to the ATPIAL (after the MAWL). Info is tough to find (I've looked a lot on the AR-15 forums and this video). Thanks, appreciate it.

They both work. If you get a full power laser either one will work. If your get civilian lasers then the dbal is better.

I use tnvc for everything. FYI it's phosphor not phosphorus, you don't want phosphorus near your eyes or body.

So I don’t really need a white light included. Are there any advancements Holosun mount? I like that everything is slaved (hope I used that right). Sometimes so that it doesn't slip out you have to trim the little tip to the crane switch. Be careful because you may destroy it doing so

Jon, random question getting into NVG game - I know it's a big investment, but if you were to recommend on an order to get things? ie laser, helmet, mount, binos, etc greatly appreciate it. Could potentially get stuff over time, but maybe not at once (good idea or nah)

Piecing it together isn't a bad choice. I'd start with laser since you can start practicing with it. Then helmet stuff you can piece together as you go and then the big plunge NVGs.

Great video as always. Mawl gang here too. My only criticism on the mawl is the zero adjustments are vague AF for me at least. I had a hard time feeling the clicks. Everything else about it, well worth the cost.

Any recommendations on an ir flood device such as the new surefire pistol peq? Would be used on a rifle with the modlite ir850.

Do you mean an IR pointer (handgun versions) and a modlite 850nm head? If so, then I wouldn't suggest it. But if you are it's hard to activate the 2 without a programmable switch like the older Unity taps.

@@colbypearson9048 oh gotcha. I agree for indoors a flood style like the mawl in cqb mode is awesome but sometimes you have to defeat photonic barriers that the flood wouldn't work in. Another reason I like the mawl.

Full powered lasers can quickly cause permanent eye damage. Rioters in Portland are using high powered lasers to blind police, people have also tried blinding airline pilots with them. That and idiots would blind themselves looking into them. Therefore because of stupid people and assholes the FDA has banned high powered lasers for civilians

They can easily buy 3 Full Watts not milliwatts of incredibly powerful eye burning lasers for $100 on line!!! Once again the idiots that make regulation make a Law Abiding versions nearly USELESS that’s less than 5 mW! Seriously! Military uses 45 mW minimum and 250mW on full power peqs. And yes 250 mW is a huge exponential difference!!!

I thought my DBAL i2's illuminator was broken when I saw that splotchy "petri dish" throw. Disappointing to know that's pretty typical.

Holosun Mount Fix: Flip the mount, like the DBAL! Recoil inertia mitigated.

Will lights still fit at the 2oclock position with the flipped mount?

Anyone have the MAWL and notice the LED indicator blinks faintly in the OFF position? Battery drain??? Visible using NVG

I haven't looked to see if the LED flashes when off, but I'm definitely seeing some drain. Mine eats a rechargeable 123A in about 2 weeks, and a fresh Surefire battery in about 3.

@@remoteholepunch6739 I spoke with BE Meyers and was told the blinking LED indicator was a normal function of the unit and wouldn't cause battery drain. A way of running a diagnostic of some kind. 🤷🏻‍♂️. They also asked that I send in my device to be looked at. They sent me a brand new replacement in return. Battery drain or not, they have great customer service.

@@KineticConsulting Mine is a couple of years old and a surefire dual tape switch 'L3' style plug will fit. However, it is VERY tight and if you try to rotate it you can possibly unscrew the plug socket and that will likely break the wires for it inside. I had this happen. Of the options out right now, I'm very happy with the Perst3. Their tape switches are nice and the power dial is useful. But I do wish it used a standard plug.

I have a perst 4 green+ it’s awesome but yes it’s true I haven’t seen anything about a warranty so if it breaks I’m probably screwed. I haven’t contacted Ivan tactical about it so I’m not sure what his stance is on that. Understand that when buying you have to wait like 30+ days for shipping because of customs. Otherwise awesome laser so far seems super solid I’ve banged it around no zero drift that I can tell. I love the controls besides the pressure pad supplied and the laser is a freaking light Sabre (vis and Ir) it’ll reach out and touch 1500m no problem not that you need to go that far but I like having more than .7mW it’s nice when shooting at further distances to see the beam and not struggle to find the laser if you miss the target like with an underpowered unit. Regardless $470 not too bad

Are you running a surefire Vampire for illunminator? I just ordered perst 4 green plus. Gonna get modlight IR with it. Have Atipal C and gen 3 14s from L3 onmi 8s. So besides perst 3 I think is a good full power option.

I'd be looking at: VIR II - for pistols CTF-3 with a kiji and malkoff/modlite heads - whenever it's released will crush LE420 - midrange/budget price MAWL-C1+ - best ergonomics but most expensive. Should be your standard for your serious builds Don't buy Steiner, but if you do get a D2 for illumination performance close to the MAWL

Probably been set in the 200 comments but The holosun does take pressure pads for the other lasers

I started with a dbal, then an atpialC, Wilcox raptar, then a fp peq15, then a Mawl. Just skip all them and get the Mawl. It’s expensive but it’ll save you money in the long run. Most the civi models suck except the C1+. It’s better than a fp peq15 imo.

@@Austin-xu1ws That’s sorta what I thought until I took a class. If done properly (which is much much easier with converging zero), converging zero is easier to use out to 200 yards.

How can you talk about Perst product if you do not own it and have not used it?

I have a few civi Atpials, and they suck. But so does the civi Steiner dbal. Good enough for indoor use. Which means there’s better.

Riley Peak Either is fine if you don’t have an problem buying an import.

Few things about the PERST. 1: Zenetico does Warranty their products 2: The Perst 3 is a full power laser at a lower cost then the horribly underpowered civilian lasers. Awesome price to performance. Absolutely no reason to get a significantly more expensive significantly weaker laser. The new Zenetico Perst 3 is absolutely worth every bit of the the $1250-1300 you get them for.

I am to understand that everyone that gets a pvs 14 pretty much dumps it a year or two down the road in lieu of a set of dual NODs after they realize they cannot live without NV. So its pretty much a waste of money to get the 14. Is this an accurate assessment in your experience?

Zenitco warranty’s their lasers and if you have problems with it you can ship it back to Moscow and they’ll fix it. I’d take my perst 3 over the dbal or the atipal-c

i was thinking the same. I just received a D3 that I purchased from Optics Planet ,,however comparing the Dbal 3 in the vid to mine,it looks different.

@@lovelauracp Of course it's going to look different, he SPECIFICALLY said his was a "dbal A3" in the video and you said yours was a "dbal D3" (which afaik doesn't even exist, maybe you mean D2?).

Put a ranger band over that little release on that holosun

Surprised no mention of the DBAL D2, seems to be a solid performer. Is there a reason you didn’t mention it (bad personal experience) or just didn’t have one on hand? Edit: you mention it later my b.

Could you expand upon why you find the i2’s annoying? The ir only model seems like the perfect fit for what I’m looking for (no vis laser)

I'm not him but the 9007(IR only) not having a vis laser makes zeroing a bitch. The illuminator is pretty useless in an urban area and even rural it won't be much use past 75ish yds. On the vis laser model the lasers aren't slaved so you're back to the zeroing headache of the 9007 but now you have no illuminator at all.

Most of what Chris Jones mentioned are my annoyances but like I said in the video if that what fits the bill for you then rock on. I also dislike lasers that only offer IR because I can't get day time reps, use them for deconfliction purposes, or use them to control or direct people. Also the lack of a sighting systems that a similar size model can offer like the A3.

Sooooo much easier to sight in a visible laser AND deal with one zero. Much easier to confirm the zero to my red dot. Requires less ammo, which is now an issue due to the damn virus. The visible is a decent backup for a red dot. I'd agree the IR illuminator isn't useful at all up close

I've had an i2 (IR/IR) for 4 years and haven't had a problem other than those mentioned in the video (slight PITA to zero without visible laser). Other than that, it's been great. Other people I know who've owned an i2 have claimed serious issues (electronics failure, failure to keep zero), but I've been lucky so far. I have a red dot on my night gun, so I get into good position, and "zero" my IR pointer to my previously zeroed red dot at distance (looking through Red dot with NVG). Then, when I eventually get to a range that I can actually shoot at night, confirm zero. After having removed the pointer, swapped positions on same gun, or swapped it between guns, roughly 6X in those 4 years, I haven't had to make more than a few clicks of adjustment from my "red dot zero", if at all. But if I had to do it all over again, I'd just buy an A3.

What is a good illuminator to supplement the DBAL A3?

Depends on what you're doing. Some illuminators like the modlite will over power it. The surefire vampire series may fill the role.

Ok, if you want real performance, get a Luna ELIR-3, then get a Luna/Surefire Adapter, then take a Unity Taps Sync and slave the Luna ELIR to the Dbal A3. This setup will now smoke the shit out of a MAWL. I Plus you can then take a second Unity Taps Sync and also slave the Green Vis Point Override to you White Light.

I really would've liked an illuminator comparison. I'm imagining the a3 and holosun illuminator being weak like the atpial-c and i2 but I could be wrong. Also story time about full powered lasers would make for an entertaining video.

The whole “mawl is great because you can send it back” It only has a 1 year warranty does it not, after that .. yeah you can send it back , but how much we talkin to fix it?? Assuming and from what I’ve heard not fucking cheap, at all. So just makes the warranty on mawls and the argument against zenitco kinda void , imo. Not to mention you can send Perst to Ivan tactical to get them fixed /serviced. Havnt done that personally but I hear that often.

Perst has warranty for American customers

@Libertarian 4 Life You can buy two Perst 3s and have money left over compared to a MAWL. The Perst 3 is superior to a MAWL and the MAWL's warranty is only for a year anyways.

The Perst 4 gen 3 green laser is water proof and has a great record. It's the official ones used by the Russian government.

Small error on your part: the Holosun laser unit DOES accept crane type pressure pads, such As the Surefire dual switch. Designed for it, and works perfectly.
