A good idea would be to turn on hazard lights as soon as possible to warn other drivers. Just because you've stopped sliding doesn't mean you're safe.

In Germany it is mandatory

Take some advise from an Alaskan : 1. Slow down 2. Have studded tires or chains on. 3. Keep 4 car lengths between you and the person in front of you. 4. Don't EVER slam your brakes on. To break slowly apply your brakes, even with abs brakes. We Alaskan's call it feathering your breaks. Pumping them slowly. 5. Pay attention. 6. A bridge is always more slippery. 6. Don't wait to slow down for a red light or stop sign. 7. NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE EVER MOVE TO ALASKA. 8. Don't assume because you have a bigger vehicle or an SUV that you have more control over your vehicle. 9. Leave earlier for work or school so you can drive slower. I hope this helps people to learn a few facts about driving in icy and/or snowy conditions.

Most states in the lower 48 do not allow studded tires anymore use to but they outlwaed it at least here in Minnesota

Anyone who has driven in icy weather frequently can tell these people are driving WAYYY too fast. I never understood why so many people think they can drive at "normal" speeds when the roads are iced up. I live in a city packed with fools too. I once was poking along at 15 mph on my way to work and everyone was passing me and a few were pissed about my driving. I ignored them, knowing the karma fairy will be working overtime. Yep, about 5 miles down the road, quite a few of the same cars that passed me were stuck on the side of the road. I just don't understand human nature. I guess people think "I'm driving a honking big SUV with a 6 liter V-8 so screw the ice! I'm unstopp... WHOAAA!" CRUNCH!! Happens every year...

I am always amazed how fast people drive in bad conditions. And yes, it usually is the big SUVs speeding. AWD or 4WD means nothing on ice. Only full snow tires with studs (are they even legal in the U.S. anymore) stand half a chance.

I was just about to say this. Plus they're driving over water which for the most part always causes ice. Hence the bridge may be iced signs! Just because you can't see the ice, doesn't mean it's not there.

DoubleM55 they don't know that 4 wheel drive is useless on ice. It will get you unstuck in the snow but in ice, the vehicle is going to go where it wants to, not where the driver does. Morons for sure.

***** thank you finally someone. Indeed, you can have the best SUV but if you don't know how to handle these situations and/or have bad tires you're screwed anyways. You're better off with a secondhand Opel or something those are cheap to repair.

And of course slowing down is out of the question. After all...."I'M IN A HURRY!

I was the driver of the black Charger at 4:38.. I didn't see the accident happen, so almost 7 years later, it's pretty scary to see what actually happened here. I'm kinda glad I was running behind that day, that could have very easily been me involved in that accident..

You know what you should do to avoid these situations? When it snows and ices up go to a parking where it's empty and start drifting... That way you will learn how the car swings when it's very slippery and you will know how to avoid overspin...

What you can do, is have a sign in the car window, that says "Student Driver", and pick a good parking lot, to practice the winter driving skills, and have an experienced driver with you.

Coming from a guy in Michigan....this is absolutely hilarious. We get about 3 ice storms a year or more, and a couple funny episodes in the area, and a couple serious ones. The Serious ones are what teach others the most. But never this many per capita that think they can hold the road at these speeds during/after the ice storm.

When I had my first driving lessons, one of the things the instructor emphasized most was "bridges freeze first". I was 18 at the time and have survived many ice storms because I remembered "bridges freeze first". Then I took my CDL and again, up high in the cab, could see how many idiots simply do not get it. Class 5 drivers are undertrained and poorly examined. If it were up to me, things would be much different.

Even in the training manual it says so. People probably threw their training manual away soon after passing their drivers license test...more like 99% dont even read half of it.

I've lived in and around West Virginia all my life. We have very few level highways. With all these hills you'd think people would learn, but no. They probably thought "Hey it's the second week of March. Spring's almost here! These highways are safe."

They get used to not having much of any snow that sticks around Charleston too. They often forget overpasses freeze way quicker.

I saw so many videos and pictures of that curve in Charleston. Now it's 2019, I know, but that don't change, that's not wet, when the weather is raining, or slicy in winter and so on. So, drive careful - Always!

Judging by the clicking sound on the audio it was freezing rain/sleet. You could SEE the accumulation on the sides of the road. It was on a BRIDGE. All the of these would serve to most people as a HUGE red flag to most people to SLOW DOWN. WAY DOWN. These people were driving like it was a spring rain. GROSS driver ignorance. Not stupidity, just probably people not accustomed to such conditions.

Heck, I would think the sleet build up on the hood of my vehicle would be a darn good clue it was bad out. Ehhhh. I am from Nebraska though, we deal with this every winter.

Soooo scary to see, can't even imagine how scary that must have been to experience. People unfortunately don't like to slow down & often get mad at the people who are driving slower because of road conditions acting as if they are being fools, then this kind of stuff happens to them.

I drive a big awd SUV and I'm always driving slowly or modestly in icy/snowy conditions contrary to all the stereotypes described here, as I'm fully aware that all the fancy 4wd systems in the world won't do you squat if your tires can't handle the ice to begin with. In fact where I live it's usually the small, light cars that spin out of control just like the end of this video shows.

Ahh I know this bridge in Charleston WV went over in blind snow when I was rookie truck driver many times, never no problems for me. Slow and very easy

Speeding, over steering and over braking caused most... possibly all these wreaks. Its not tires.. that's a minor factor. Everyone, please drive safe.

You can sure see it - as soon as they break traction they stand all over brakes. I guess you have understand what people do when they panic but if they'd just get off the throttle gently, stay off the brakes and ride it through instead of grossly over-correcting 90% of them would get home without so much as a dent.

and, if you have a manual, down shift through gears. Maybe gently touch the brake but if you do natural human reaction and slam on the brakes it;ll make things worse

Tom Gupta You have to be real careful when down shifting a manual in icy conditions, you get nearly the same response as standing on the brakes when you let the clutch out. My response to icy conditions is to throw the transmission into neutral ASAP so as to not having the drive wheels pushing or dragging,

gorp27 I thought it does nothing helpful when you go to neutral. If driving on ice, I watch the tach all the time and make sure I don't hit the edge of the "stall zone". If I have to slow down, I drop down a gear but try my best to avoid touching the brake pedal if it's very bad. ABS means nothing. Its purpose is to slow down the car without locking the wheel rotation. It's of little help in icy conditions. The entire time I was driving to and from work, my car computer never activated the ABS.

largol33t1 Neutral helps in that it cuts engine power to wheels so that your only coasting with the momentum you have. I live far up north in Canada and one of the best ways to get a spin under control or a slide under control is to cut power, the problem modern vehicles have is the differential sending all that power to the wheel with least resistance. This is good for cornering (your outside wheel will spin faster then your inside wheel so you will corner smoothly.) but very bad when your sliding or high centered. Granted I don't go into neutral myself, I simply take my foot off the gas and correct slightly. The worst mistake people make is full on breaks because as soon as your steering wheels stop spinning you lose the ability to steer. Pay attention to the video you'll see people put their brakes on and their front tires will stop spinning but the car/ truck will still be moving forward. At that point your front tires act more like a rudder on a boat then for their intended purpose and they have gone from being a driver with some control of their vehicle to a passenger who happens to be sitting in the drivers seat.

what about my statement would lead you to believe that I don't understand that all modern vehicles have differential's? Was it my use of the word Modern? Let me rephrase it then, Most vehicles made after 1900 have had a differential in them. This device enables the car to take a corner, by sending power to the wheel that is spinning with the least amount of resistance, which in a corner will be the outside wheels/ Tires. If you don't have a differential your tires would skip along the road during a corner at all but the lowest speeds. You would not spin out as you've stated you would simply not take the corner at all. The differential in this case has the negative effect of sending most/ all engine power to the path of least resistance, in this case the tire that is spinning most easily due to a loss of traction. Now If the tire that has a loss of traction is your inside tire, and it is receiving most of the engine power, if it suddenly regains traction, you could dangerously spin.

I think the temp is right above freezing temp and that the water becomes this very wet snow/slush, which makes the tires auquaplan, which is worse than ice.

I was impressed by some of these driver’s skills! They seem to have driven on ice before.

This is why I take my cars/trucks out in the winter and drift around somewhere in the boonies so I know how me and my car will react and I will feel more confident in my ability to control the spin. Also, I can almost guarantee the driver of that corolla that t-boned the other car around 4:04 was texting.

Seeing those little cars spin out of control is hilarious.

Driving too fast for conditions always does it

First, stay in your car. Unless it is on fire, that is the safest place in this situation. You are nothing but a target waiting to be hit out wandering around. Those little flashing beacons that you can just turn on and open your door and slide across the pavement work well. Second, turn the cruise control OFF and slow down. Being late is better than being hurt or worse.

What camcorder did you used for this?

Only old cars without ESP/DSC lost control.

The bird sound at 1:00 is lovely. This would make a great white noise soundtrack.

Don't drive on bridge or elevated structure in winter storm, that's where you can find icy spots.

If it's happening at this high frequency, shouldn't there be a police car with flashing slow down warning? It's not like in the middle of where.

They put a high friction overlay on top of the concrete bridge deck, which itself has been replaced since this video, and therefore this isn't as bad of an issue nowadays, however you there are large signs before every bridge in W Va, including this one, that say "Watch for ICE on bridge", and if people listened to that, and realized that just because the speed limit in this area is 60mph doesn't mean you can do that in Snow-Ice conditions, this wouldn't be that much of an issue.

Watch closely and learn, people. Slow down in bad weather and, if you start to slide, keep your foot off the brake (or brake gently - don’t lock the wheels) and turn the steering wheel in the direction you’re sliding. Just as the car starts to turn back towards the direction you want to go, immediately straighten the front wheels - don’t oversteer/overcorrect, or you’ll whip the car around (really losing control, crashing into guardrails or heading off-road).

Yeah slam on the brakes more. Cuz that's exactly how to deal with a frozen bridge. Glad darwinism at work here.

It just goes to show you: never underestimate ice. Last winter, I was going like 12-13 on a 30MPH road, it was snowing (and I probably should have been going slower than that!), hit some ice and spun out, nearly hitting some trees. Instead of actually hitting them head first, I lucked out / ended up between them. Ended up shearing off the metal from the front up to the passenger side mirror. It wasn't even... scary, it just felt ... weird....

That bridge has got some weird banking and elevation to it. All of the bridges on that part of the interstate is like this. I hate it even in good weather. I don't live in Charleston, but I go through there a lot. Y'all drive crazy there

Some states allow the use of studded tires. Other states do not. We also can use special ice tires like the Bridgestone Blizzak. I use the high speed rated Goodyear Eagle Ultra grip. In the mountain states, sometimes chains are required.

Nice recoveries if nothing else. Always practice caution when going over a bridge. The absence of ground below causes the roads to freeze up more easily.

Ricardo Testa i didn't know about the bridge freezing first. Interesting. But a lot of too fast for the conditions.

Looking back on this video, my current car is a FWD Nissan Sentra. It likes to have the rear step out on me in rainy conditions, so no doubt it would’ve stepped out on me on this bridge. I see a majority of the cars spinning are ones that are FWD.

I just purchased a fwd vehicle, it was the only one I could afford. Im honestly petrified because my experience has been with rwd vehicles. As soon as I get this car with fwd, im going to take it to a parking lot and feel it out. It's going to be interesting

Too many ambulances there. Someone had to have been banged up.

For everyone who says it's their own fault for driving so fast, that kind of confidence that this would never happen to you is what CAUSES these accidents, not driving too fast. They were driving fine until they hit that patch of black ice. A lot of people let up on the gas and did not hit their brakes. They were fine. Other's tried to maneuver on the black ice, and they slid around. I've driven on black ice on LSD in Chicago, going 10 MPH (in a 50 MPH zone), and I STILL did a 720. 2:50 NOW the salt truck arrives.

I love how many people spun out and recovered before someone finally got T-boned. (and some of them spun and hit the wall unnecessarily).

Bridges always ice over before anything else.. smh

"No one was hurt in any of these accidents" I guarantee you buddy at 4:02 is hurt.

acruz691 Unfortunately the insurance companies are likely to find both drivers at fault. Both elements of this crash resulted from the drivers traveling too fast for the conditions. The first car spun out because his speed resulted in oversteer while attempting to take the curve. The second car could not stop in time due to the road conditions. If the first car spins out right next to the second with only feet to react, they may not fault the second driver - but without video evidence of that, it would be hard to prove. That's why I operate dashcams at all times.

The driver in that first car just achieved expert status.

The road you are driving on may be fine but when you get to an elevated portion with nothing underneath it, SLOW DOWN. They will always have ice on them.

Bridges always ice up before the rest of the road. This is easy to figure out. The rest of the road is on the ground which takes a long time to chill while the bridge has the freezing air on all sides of it. This produces a much faster heat loss and faster icing. So slow down in cold weather, especially before you get on the bridge. After you are already up there it is too late. Another thing is to stay off your brakes unless you are going to hit something. If you stop your tires from turning, you are lost.

Specially all the road surface detached from ground like bridges etc. are slippery way more then any road attached to ground as the ground keeps the road warmer and steel of course makes it colder, that's why driving on such a surface requires to slow down and managing any slips by not braking but letting all pedals go and manage just with the steering wheel, until proper grip is achieved again and with slight throttle applied continue with driving with much lesser speed then usual. Jumping on the brakes is the worst possible option as the car just start sliding like a skim-board.

Its like this guy knows which cars are going to crash.
