Number One Mistake Using a BBQ Guru On A Kamado Grill

Hey everyone, today we are going to talk about something that seems like a great idea but is a little tricker than you might expect and that is how to use a draft system like a BBQ Guru on a Char-Griller Akorn. With Char-Griller’s recent release of the new Auto Kamado, I’m sure some folks who already have an existing Akorn are wanting to go out and buy a draft system to use forced air on their cooker so they don’t need to babysit it as often. While that is a great plan, and I’ve done it a lot over the years that I’ve owned different Akorns, when it comes to Kamado grills, there is one big trick I think you need to know before you try this to increase your likelihood of success. You see, When it comes to Kamados and digital temp probes, the one thing they don't take into account is that while a fire is building in a kamado like the Akorn, that heat isn’t going to dissipate as fast as it does in other grills. What most people do is get a small fire in their kamado, put a fan on it, and as the fan blows, it creates a fire that is far too big to run smoking temperatures at before the digital thermometer realizes that we have hit our desired temperature. By the time it does recognize it its already too late and the fire is much larger than it should be. The exception to this is the new Auto Kamado which is specifically tuned for the Akorn’s behavior and honestly performs better than I could ever make a guru perform on an older Akorn. How we must counteract this is simple. Set up your draft system just like you normally would, except, after you light your fire, do not put the fan in the fan port. Watch the temperature on the controller, but use the top vent to adjust and throttle back just like you were if you were going to run your cooker without the draft system. Once you bring it into the desired temperature, then you can insert the fan into the port and allow it to take over and manage the now established fire. I promise you if you take these steps with a draft system on an Akorn you will have a much better time adjusting to the use of forced air on your cooker. I hope this helps and if you give it a shot, let me know how it works for you. #kamado #Chargrillerakorn #bbqguru

I have an Inkbird blower system that I use on my Akorn, Oklahoma Joe Bronco and SnS kettle without any issue of running 225 all day long. I agree with keeping top vent nearly closed is best practice.

Really appreciate your videos. Been watching for a while and really thinking about the Auto Kamado next year. For now, still enjoying my standard grill and learning to cook on my Solo Bonfire fire pit.

I just bought a regular Akorn Kamado, thanks to yours and other vids going over pros and cons. I was tired of buying $14 grills every year and having them rust out in a month. So decided to invest in something that might last. Had to tighten the belt to do it though.

Definitely needed this video! I picked up a temp controller for my Akron. Fairly new to smoking. I’m struggling figuring out when I set my temp to 225. It will stay roughly around 3-4 hours then it will start to dip down below 200. I keep my top vent maybe a crack open to even barely reaching the 1 mark.

I spent $35 on a tiptoptemp for my Acorn and it will hold within 8 -10 degrees of 250 for 12 - 14 hours with min adj. Usually only for heavy cloud cover to full sun.

Do you think the auto-Kamado would survive outside in Las Vegas heat? I want to buy one, but I’m not sure leaving it outside, even if covered would be a good idea. Any thoughts on this?

I use a Smartfire controller on my akorn which seems to be the most popular controller here in Australia. They have a configuration you can load in the app specifically for the akorn. I find as long as I start my fire small it will come up and maintain low temps no problem. But you have to be careful at the start. Too big a fire and forget about it, the akorn will run!

I've been tinkering with my auto kamado.. I used the bottom part of a webber kettle that I cannibalized for a uds build and made a domed deflector.. used the stainless deflector ontop of that and then th grate ontop where it normally sets. Then after getting Temps near 225 I close th fan cover completely and set top vent at 1.. it will stay pretty much rock solid within 15 degrees above my set 225.. th fan doesn't even have to work.. kinda like setting a uds temp

Ok, here it is. The difference between the auto-kamado and bolting on a temperature controller as an accessory is almost certainly down to the P.I.D. settings. Tuning to find the best values of proportional, integral & derivative (P.I.D) in a feedback loop control system is not that difficult if you know what you are doing, but it is devil magic if you are unfamiliar with the function of these parameters. I'm assuming you can access these ? If you cannot, then the ability of the controller to match process temperature to set value is going to be sketchy at best.

Dunno wether it your fan unit or what , i have regularly used a smartfire from start and let it control the fire up to temp and it will hold temp all day without too much issue issue Dont leave the top vent wide open more than say 5 mins when you are first getting the fire started and just let it come up slowly and it will sit there all day Its the good thing i can light it and then go off and do all the prep work while the kamado does it thing Maybe your fan units are running the fan 100% right up to the set temp ?? Its been a while since ive used it on the akorn as been using it on joe classic and just got myself a new akorn so might be interesting to try it out on the new akorn for the burn in and see how it goes

I use a BBQ Guru on my Weber Summit Charcoal, and it is designed to not kick on the fan at all until the temperature of the grill stops rising on its own. It can also sense an open lid and will not turn on the fan if there is a sudden decrease in temp.
