Char-Griller Gravity Fed 980 And Why This Mod Changes Everything | THIS IS A GAMECHANGER | LSS MODS

Фильм және анимация

Char-Griller Gravity Fed 980 is one of the best pits you can purchase for under 1,000 USD. The problem is, I always felt it was not the best. I gave that nod to the Masterbuilt Gravity Fed 1050/800 In my honest head-to-head review. The reason was simple. The Masterbuilt out smoked it because of a Char-Griller design flaw! Now, I show you why doing this mod to your char-griller changes everything!!! This is a GAMECHANGER! This now pits the 980/head to head/with the Masterbuilt!
See why!!!

Good point about the back draft during windy conditions. Threw some chicken wings on last weekend. 25 mph gusts was all that was needed to blow embers into the fan box. The plastic blades melted to the shroud lol. Money is tight so I made the mod myself. Doesn't have the extended baffle, but still moves the fan/flapper back 2" like the MB.👍

As a person that does a lot of plumbing and watching a lot of KZread I combined something from work and something I saw on mad scientist BBQ channel. I got one of the very first 980's that came out and my flap burnt off on the first cook after seasoning it in so got a replacement and that also burn right off so I have some flame proof cloth good to 1000 degrees for sweating copper pipes so I cut a piece of it out and then put some small screws in the bottom as weights to make it fall back into place when the fan turns off. So no problem with it burning but was still having problems keeping it at the temperature I wanted without it going way to hot so I saw on mad scientist BBQ channel that he has ball valves on his offset smokers and he regulates his air by opening and closing the valve so I mounted a 3/4" ball valve on the bottom my the fan access door. I just leave it wide open to cook the fan still runs just fine when it needs to you can feel the air getting sucked up when the fan is on and hasn't gone over more than 10 degrees since I have modified it probably 30 cooks ago and I can go from 250 to baking something at 400 in less than 5 minutes at it will hold there all day and the other great benefit is slide the divider in close the ball valve down and I can save my fuel in the hopper because all the air is instantly gone

I've tried putting wood in the ash pan and then in with the charcoal then both. Never noticed a difference on where you put it, only the amount of wood. So I only mix it with the charcoal and still have the original flap. Modify if you want but I still don't see it being a "design flaw" as it works fine if you use it as intended. I think the only reason people melt their flap is that they use way too much wood under there and create an actual little fire.

So, if you make the essential mods to the CG980 and the MB800 (or 1050), without regard to price, which is better? I look forward to your reply. I also note that MB offers the griddle, rotisserie, and pizza oven, and I don’t think CG offers similar accessories. Do those impact your opinion? Great job Tommy, you’re a cool dude! PS Why do you think CG didn’t design the fan on the other side of the box? Direction of the air? As is, it’s a sore thumb!

My flap isn't burnt but last cook I could not keep the 980 under 350 degrees after I did a 450 degree cook. I closed the fan lid and tied some butcher twine on the latch to have a tiny air gap to try to maintain temps. Only problem I ever had. The flap looks a little misshaped though. Cheers

My flap burned up too and their CS was very helpful. Sent them a pic and they sent a new flap. What I did at the time, since they were b/o'd on the flap, was order a fire-resistant sheet of silicone from Amazon and cut my own flap. It is a little thicker than the factory flap and seems more robust than the original but it still allows air to freely move across it into the burn chamber. So far it hasn't burned up and my 980 is working great.

Tommie add me Im a patron Henry Lewis Jr. 22 years service. Thank You Sir. Also another fantastic video as usual. I've been a fan of your channel for well over 2 years now. I'm the guy that told you a few years back that Bass Pro Shop had the Masterbuilt 1080 when they were impossible to get at the time.

*Nice Mods. Looks ugly though, specially with that cable sticking out like that.* As someone who’s interested in some kind of charcoal grill like the ones in this video, I’m incredibly disappointed in the fact that both companies release products that require mods to be optimal or simply even just last a decent time. That fan sticking out like that is already a bad design imo, extends that grill far to much and doesn’t look good. Adding that piece does solve the problem but man, next thing you know your grill is sticking out to your neighbors yard 🤣🤣 RIP IDK, I’m definitely not sold on it. But mainly because I’m up in Canada where Charcoal is expensive and with our USD conversion makes these mods cost half a new grill after shipping and duties. So I guess I’ll stick to my 3 pellet grills for now 🤣👍 Nice vid

Hi Frank. Unlike the Masterbuilt if you add wood chunks down in the ash catcher you face burning up your flap. Because of that it was impossible to get as much wood flavor as you get on the Masterbuilt. With this Mod, you can now safely add wood to the ash catcher. Watch again and I show you what this mod does. Cheers and thanks for the question. If you have more questions feel free to email me gallerybbq@gmail.com

Char Griller will not honor the warranty for the 980 Gravity. Can't directly contact Char Griller and they are very slow to respond to warranty claim. Unit went down within 6 months of purchase, Char Griller eventually said they would send replacement parts but its been 2 months and instead of grilling I'm eating "take out" chinese food. My advice, don't buy this grill unless you want to eat a lot of "take out".

Anyone of these types of pits can run hot or cold at any given time. That is why i always use an external source. It's always spot on. If you need a link for one LMK gallerybbq@gmail.com
