I do have to defend Cinderella here. Her movie was NOT about getting the prince. Please be reminded that in the beginning, All she wanted was to go to a god damned party. Then she fell in love. Her original intention was to just have a fun night out.

+Angie Claire You're right the Prince was the one who was seeking a mate. That was the first time Cinderella was treated with Kindness from another human being besides her father and she really just needed to take advantage of the situation to put her step-mother and step-sisters in place.

+Angie Claire Hell, more then that- she wanted one simple night of joy in her miserable existence. One where she is frequently abused and overworked. How is that not at least reasonable? And the Prince had showed her genuine kindness for once, and a chance to escape, even just for a night.

I agree that Aurora is bland and forgettable and waits to be saved. But the rest of the disney princesses are independent in their own right(s). Snow White was a "waiting around" type, but she had a positive, never give up attitude despite everything that happened to her. Snow White did cry, but she had a valid reason to: she was traumatized after almost being killed. But afterwards, Snow White was able to pick herself up and looked for the positives in her situation. And yes, Snow White was going to wait for her prince, but in the mean time, she spent time with and didn't take any crap from the dwarfs. Snow White took care of herself and the dwarves without batting an eye or complaining. And I hate how every single time a new princess film comes out, that new princess is praised for being independent and not needing to be saved by a prince. And every single time, Cinderella and Aurora are mentioned as if all of the Disney princesses are like them. Has everyone seriously forgotten Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, and well pretty much all of the ladies of the Renaissance? I feel that comparing all of the Disney princesses, even Snow White, to Aurora is insulting and unfair.

I agree, but why do we always forget Mulan! I know she's not technically a princess, but is still marketed as a princess. She saved China, defended her fathers honour, works hard to become a great soldier and saves Li Shang's life. Like how can we forget her arguably as a 'princess' she did the most.

Agreed. I love the older films, but not for the princesses and princes (which are pretty fuckin' bland), but usually for the villains and the side characters and the animation. In Sleeping Beauty for example, I wasn't really interested in Aurora and Phillip, but I loved the visuals, loved Flora Fauna and Merriweather, and of course, fuckin' Maleficent in all her badass glory!

God, I'd love it if someone made a film where the hero/heroine, who's nice and moral, just fails in the end. The lesson being that sometimes life is unfair, and the bad guys are sometimes victorious, being nice isn't enough to get what you want. It'd be true to life and teach a great lesson.

Somewhat appropriate that Disney, the original company that led to the proliferation of the "princess" stereotype, was also the first to give an on-screen upgrade from Princess to Queen in a manner akin to that of real life. Let's be honest here: outside of Frozen, when's the last time you heard the word "coronation" used for a female character in a kids' movie?

Zelda in Twilight Princess now holds the Title of Queen, she's 20 years old, still young, pretty but took responsibility of a queen(unlike peach or daisy) Elsa from Frozen, again another young pretty queen, Garnet from Final Fantasy became queen at the age 19, so I don't think were 100% anti queen, I think it's about how they're portrayed

At least with Sally and Leia, there's a good reason: Sally knows her father is still alive, and refuses to step up as queen until he dies or willing passes on the crown. Becoming queen would mean (to her and the other rebels) that they'll never see their beloved and very well liked king again. As for Leia, it's because she was, legitimately, the princess until her HOME PLANET (and the nation that went with it) was destroyed. She's a 'princess' because she has no kingdom to rule over.

There's still Queen Amidala who became a Senator. It's pretty obvious why women prefer princess as you said they want to feel and look young. For queen you think of Queen Elizabeth and Princess you think Dianna or Kate. To be fair the main male characters are princes: Prince Eric, Prince Charming, Prince Phillip. Only Simba becomes King at the end but those are animals.

Alice from Alice in Wonderland--in almost every version with "Through the Looking-glass" characters--never got the option of being a princess. She was immediately upgraded from little girl status to queen, and by the Red and White Queens no less, not the kings. What Alice is the Queen _of_ is anyone's guess. Anyway, why be princess or queen when you can become an empress? :D

+Shy Kiagana Wait, where are you getting all this info from? I've never heard that Alice Liddell was schizophrenic, not even in the crazy fan theory versions of her life. I'm not saying it isn't true, just that I've never heard of it before. And in what version did Alice visit Wonderland multiple times in her lifetime? In the original books, Alice visited Wonderland once and Looking-glass Land once. Is this from the live action adaptation by Disney? Or some other adaptation? Although I agree that storybook Alice (not just the real Alice Liddell) was originally a brunette, as you can see in Carroll's own drawings from the manuscript he gave as a present to Alice Liddell. However, I've seen John Tenniel's drawings of Alice colored with blonde hair in editions printed before the Disney cartoon came out. Regardless of all this, my original post was entirely about storybook Alice from the official published version with John Tenniel as illustrator, not about Alice from any later adaptations/non-canon works.

  • @thirteenfury

    @thirteenfury

    8 жыл бұрын

+Shy Kiagana I'll have to look into this more, but from what I've learned over the years is that the alleged drug and mental illness references in Alice in Wonderland are mostly untrue, just ideas that leaked into pop culture during the 60s. Primarily from drug culture interpreting the Caterpillar's mushroom as hallucinogenic mushrooms a lot of people were into back then. Anyway, the silliness mostly comes from Lewis Carroll himself, afaik, and a lot of scenes seem unrelated because he created the book out of various stories he told to the real Alice and her friends during their visits together. Plus he added extra stuff to the story when people encouraged him to publish it for anyone to read. It would be like if your mom decided to turn all the bedtime stories she told you as a kid into a single story and let everybody read it. Most things wouldn't make sense to other people or seem like part of the same story.

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate comments by even mentioning Elsa, but yet another reason to love her! Its only a stereotype, but she does hold the title queen. Even if she was the most awful and blah character Disney Studios has ever produced, she does have that independent personality, AND she holds the title queen, not princess, DOESN'T wait nor wants a prince to save her, yet people still hate on her. So its maybe the fact that Elsa, along with the other characters, are over advertised, or its just the royal stereotype.

I've said this before. Some nostalgic princesses cannot call themselves queens due to certain legal restrictions. Like the lack of proof that the king is dead. Otherwise, the most they can be is princess regent. In Sonic, we were never flatout told that Sally's father is dead and in Captain N we see the King in a video feed. And in Princess Leia's case, ... her kingdom blew up. Who is she going to be queen of? Planet debris?

So, as it typically would occur, the oldest prince would inherit his father's kingdom (this is why sons were so important) and the princesses would be given to princes of other nations for dowry and diplomacy. When the princess married a prince from another nation, she would remain a princess until her husband became king at which time she would become a queen. If a princess remained unmarried, she would never have an opportunity to be a queen.

Yes, from the times we do see her being awake and active her character isn't really established and is kind of boring but I don't really think we can expect much from her as the whole point of the story literally is that she was cursed to do nothing and wait for someone to save her. Davis Jensen Yup and it was in the comic books as well. At least until they brought the human world into it. Princess Sally couldn't be queen because her father was missing and Robotnik had falsely crowned himself king. She even almost becomes queen until her father shows up. (at least I think it was her father but could have been a robot in disguise)

I guess a princess is a princess until she marries a king or has children. I can't imagine a woman that has a child wanting to label herself "princess".

A princess and prince have traditionally not automatically been promoted to kings and queens should the feudal lieges pass away. Typically, there will be a retainer or steward that will run the kingdom until the prince is ready to inherit the responsibility. Princesses do not become queens until they are married to a king. Princesses have traditionally been used as a sort of political currency to ensure there are strong family bonds between kingdoms.

people get upset when they take the title princess but they aren't old enough to be queen. Elsa only became queen when she was 21, all the other Disney princesses are under that age

Who wants to bet if he made this video today he would put Cersei in that anti queen lineup. He already mentioned Arya so it would just make sense for her to be there seeing as how she's now the official queen of Westeros (at the moment) p.s. Go Dany

I agree. And the same can be said of boys and the prince/king dynamic. Some kings are good yes, but sometimes the king is evil and the Prince is good. The same is true of women as you said. I think media thrives on taking advantage of black and white simplistic "morality" because they feel kids respond to it better. (Though, sometimes, but rarely, children are preceptive enough to catch it)

Not to brunette, her hair turns pink or purple. But after heavy looking I found out that they did make an exclusive doll of her in her wedding gown with short brunette hair, alternatively they still have a blonde Rapunzel in a wedding and/or princess gear. And still they aren't allowed to be brats and horrible people at the start of a movie.

While Arya is not a princess but she is considered one but yet she does things, she fights, kills and doesn't just wait for a prince and neither does Sansa she just has to do that so joffrey and Cersi won't kill her!

Yeah, I think the only thing to consider is making more positive Queens. Not a ton of positive Queen figures out there. But otherwise I'd say the hate is overblown. There are plenty of positive princess figures and they aren't severely limiting. Everyone has different ideals especially as kids. As many boys who want to be King, many want to be the Knight who frankly while saving the day doesn't have a lot of power and authority (King rules after all). Think people get too heated about things.

As defence of princeses with no king and queen left, it could be that they can't be crowned. This works for princes Lea, but peatch(?) is with no exuse. My god my spelling is bad, sorry: dyslectic and dutch.
