The reason why Heath Ledger's Joker is so good is the fact that if the Joker was real, that is EXACTLY what he would be like.

JMFilms123 I do enjoy Nostalgia Critic but I do wish he would have kept his pre 2000 cut off date. Movies like After Earth, Man of Steel, The Purge, Ghost Rider, The Wicker Man and Bloodrayne are hardly nostalgic. There are so many Nostalgic movies for him to review, hell he could even review his favorites to see if they hold up. I would totally be down for him reviewing Secret Of NIHM and Land Before Time. I do think he needs to stop with the skits as they add nothing to the review.

One thing I'm surprised that Doug didn't mention here was that in preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger took his inspiration from Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange. When you know that, it gives something new to the character

For some reason, i felt sorry for Alex in the second half of A Clockwork Orange. Seeing him get abused was harder for me to watch than seeing him do all his ultra violence. Hannibal Lecter and Joker are always people's top choices for villains, and that's because they are really fucking cool....but they aren't humanized like Alex and that just adds layers to the character. I think McDowell's performance as Alex DeLarge is the greatest ever just because it made me empathize with one of the scariest characters ever put on film.

Was secretly hoping for Slade from Teen Titans. Yes, he was a villain in a kid's show, but his level of sadism, manipulation, and sheer drive to dominate and kick every living (and dead) thing's ass into submission and servitude could be seen as fearful.

TheChildofAuraReborn Ron Perlman's portrayal of Deathstroke is easily one of the best portrayals of an animated villain ever. The way he managed to make Slade sound charming and evil at the same time is amazing. They should really cancel Teen Titans go and bring back the original as a revival or a continuation. Ron Perlman reprising his role as Slade would be the coolest thing ever. Also, what did you think of Deathstroke in Young Justice? I personally felt he was underutilized and very underwhelming.

  • @TheChildofAuraReborn

    @TheChildofAuraReborn

SergeantTomato5 I will be honest here: To me, Slade and Deathstroke (though they're just the same) are two very different characters to me in portrayal. You can have many different incarnations of a character, but if one stands out like that, then by golly they are their own character. Slade is nothing like his previous incarnations.

It's a U/G because it's suitable for all ages. There's nothing in the film that is unsuitable for Children. There's no swearing (Damn and Hell are Not swear words) and the only violence in it is less violent than Cartoons. The film is eerie with the music and the tone but it doesn't show anything that's too much for kids.

Bill Sykes is such a great pick for this list. He genuinely frightened me as a child. His dead eyes and how he beat Nancy to death in such a freaky way- gawwd. You could always sense he'd snap any second- and having him in a movie contrasted with such colorful characters who sang such fun songs- well he was just scary.

God I know, a REALLY bad guy, and I'm going to be portraying him over the summer. My local theater district is putting on their production of Oliver! I preformed "My Name" for my family and they loved it, they were terrified. I really wish that the 1968 film had him sing that. I would love to see Oliver Reed do that.

On the subject of identifying with Alex from Clockwork Orange, I don't think it's his actions they mean for you to identify with, but his life and feelings. Here's a great example: in the book "Grendel" by John Gardner (which is told from the perspective of the bloodthirsty monster from "Beowulf), he still has a somewhat sadistic, callous, even condescending outlook on life. He seems to get a real kick out of scaring people and causing havoc, but he also develops a somewhat intelligent side as well. And it's the actions of the world that turn him into a monster and his actions that cause the world to hate him. But he is relatable in that he questions life, existence, truth, philosophy, free will, and he does try and better himself to fit into the world, just like Alex when he volunteered to be "cured". And this is a struggle that I would argue everyone faces and Alex and Grendel could both be an embodiment of the inner frustration that arises within people through these struggles and maybe even the dark fantasies people have to cope with the world when they don't feel in control.

As much as I love "The Exorcist" (and I do), I'm gonna agree with Doug here. HAL represents everything that could go wrong with technology, but not only that; HAL (as presented in the film) also represents everything that could go wrong with computerized artificial intelligence... even before actual IRL computers have even begun to remotely reach anything slightly resembling actual artificial intelligence. Instead of emotion, we get cold logic. It's logic that will literally follow the mission command down to the very last letter... and God help you if you get in the way of that mission. HAL is there to remind us of the intrinsic need to couple both logic and emotion together, lest we lose sight of who or what we are. Our logic allows us to make rational decisions, but our emotions allow us to connect and make decisions that, perhaps while detrimental to the overall mission, might just be the morally high ground. But, even then, what really is the moral high ground when you're arguing against a computer? It's a fun film.

... what's with people finding John Doe scary in Se7en? He's just stupid. Call me crazy, but I don't find idiots to be scary. Only reason he "wins" is because Brad Pitt plays a 2-dimensional stupid stereotype. And his motivations makes absolutely no sense.

***** HAL wasn't nature, so your straw man wasn't a good one, anyway. In fact, he was made by man to be perfect, but man went wrong in making him perfect and then to do something imperfect such as lie to the crew about the mission. Having the understanding of a human caused him inner conflict over this behavior and he went insane. This was explained by Clarke himself, the co-writer of the screenplay for the movie. You're wrong in saying he didn't know what he was doing. The lie (which he blamed on human error which was actually true but he dodged the blame in a way) lead to multiple murders. HAL was EVIL and he KNEW it. This was such an integral part of the whole story for Kubrick's movie it could be no other way. But I guess you don't know the real story of the movie.

See, Critic's description of Hannibal was spot on. I never really liked him during his Clarice stage. By then he was not just mellowed out but for some reason was portrayed as if he was some sort of god. But during his stint against Will Graham. Awesome. He was threatening. He was scary. He was active, but believable. He wasn't portrayed as a good thing. He was the bad guy. Which is why I really hope Critic give the show "Hannibal" a look.

Man... I'm not a Dark Knight fanboy but I enjoyed the movies. As a hardcore fan of Batman comics I tend to hate Batman movies as they never portray the real Batman characters. It's usually the cartoon version and no not the awesome Batman cartoon I mean the cheesy one. But the Dark Knight did something that I didn't think was possible. The Joker is such a deep character in the comics. He's crazy, evil, maniacal, disturbed and is a murdering psychopath with a plan. A character that I don't think you can do on screen. But Heath goddamn I love you. You took the character from the comics, the dark disturbed murderer that has challenged Batman time and time again. The Joker has an ironic name, because his name makes you think he's a funny character but really he's fucking scary. Something other Batman things get wrong. And to sum up Heath's entire performance in a few seconds, refer back to the scene where the Joker had caught the imposter Batman. That right there was the real Joker, flailing the mask about laughing in one second then out of no where a deep horrifying voice booms out LOOK AT ME... the entire audience stopped talking, everyone in the room was quiet, everyone's eyes on the screen... you could hear a pin drop. Then as quickly as he switched his tone he switches back. That right there, I have no words to how amazing that performance was. That was the Joker, like a horrible evil lurks inside but he keeps it reserved letting out only a little at a time. That was the real Joker. And I give all the praise in the world to Heath because the Joker is my favorite villain. That movie should have had Heath as the main character and Bale should have been supporting actor.

Oh god I thought I was the only one. I totally get the Hannibal part. To me he didn't seem scary at all. His scenes actually helped you calm down (in silence of the lambs) as it ironically felt like a safe zone , he was behind a enforced glass. Well the reasoning always was that Hannibal is as much as a protagonist as the detectives. So he had to be likable in some way. He also as he pointed out was a James Bond villain "evil", he followed his own moral code and didn't really go down to common criminal level of assaulting women or likewise actions. Aristocrat criminal with a bad habit of eating humans.

Bill Sykes would be a good Mr. Hyde if they had made a Dr. Jekly and Mr. Hyde movie base off the book. His voice and his role on Oliver Twist was creepy, dark and pure scary.

I love Ledger's Joker, but the character had been explored and made more complex way before The Dark Knight(thought it was wonderful to finally see it on the big screen and they did perfect). The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, The Man Who Laughs and other stories were all amazing step forwards in making the character the fascinating one we have today.

What about Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now? Marlon Brando wasn't even in 2/3rds of the movie, and he still took the show, and terrified everyone. He was cold, relentless, and unpredictable. He chained up Willard, and decapitated one of his own men. That's fucking insane. The speech about the inoculated arms, the recording about the slug. He is what man becomes when we stop caring about humanity, and lose hope in ourselves. And that is terrifying as hell.

The Joker is one of the few characters throughout film, tv, or otherwise who I can say and I think a lot of people would agree has never been done poorly or been poorly cast. You have Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Cesar Romero, Troy Baker, and even the guy they got for Joker on the Gotham tv series did a great job. The only one I didn't like that I can think of is the Joker from The Batman.

    11. In a play some friends were in, a guy really internalized the character. The actor who played the villain played the part WELL. 10. Resistance is futile. 9. Fan rage at its worst. She's also strikes me as being a tad...eh, like Laney or whatever her name is. 8. Psycho murderers don't scare me that much (and by that I mean, sadistic douchebag who just likes to kill people for the jollies doesn't creep me out by itself); however, a villain who tries to play the hero into his hands is awesome, especially when the hero is demonstrated to be a genius. And it makes for an even better hero who can turn the tables and play the villain into HIS hands. 7. Psycho-villain with class is even better. And shooting the heck out of the guy singing that song is hilarious. 6. I haven't seen it. Probably won't because...well, I scare WAAAAY too easy. 5. If you have to call an Exorcist, they're scary. I think that's obvious. 4. Man, I love the Joker, especially Kieth's performance. I kind of would have liked a bit of backstory from the Dark Knight, but...well, it still works well. I also wish they would have had a "One bad day" like speech (heck, if they had taken it word for word from the comic books, I would be ok). 3. It sounds scary. But that's an interesting point, as evil being an ever-evolving forces of evil. 2. You should read about Legion from the Bible; for both showing a terrifying concept of posession and total badassery. A guy's possesed by possibly a thousand demons or so, and he basically turns into a zombie. He cuts himself up and lives in the tombs and runs around naked. People have chained this guy up behind his back but he just broke the chains effortlessly. And the great badassery of it all is that when Jesus gets near this guy, he flips out and begs not to be thrown into the abyss (hell). 1. You're in heaven, Dave.

Hal was a scary character, not a performance. Yes there is a difference. A scary character is when you look up information about a character and say "Dang that guy sounds scary". A scary performance is seeing a character portrayed before your eyes and saying "Dang that guy IS scary". Yes Hal's resolve and capability makes him intimidating, but i dont get chills down my spine like i do thinking about Norman Bates and Raegan.

There are few things that piss me off more than when someone makes fun of a movie because they don't understand it. Don't get me wrong, nothing's wrong with not getting a movie in its entirety. I certainly can't wrap my head around every film that I see. But, as an example, I'm not going to sit here and say that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is flawed simply because I can't grasp everything with it. And here's Doug making fun of The Silence of the Lambs because he doesn't get that Hannibal's "cheesy" moments are due to him just trying to fuck with Clarice. He didn't do anything like that during the escape scene, did he? And the battle between Clarice and Hannibal in the Silence of the Lambs is a battle of wits. Her intelligence is what attracted him to her in the first place. Hannibal is taunting Clarice into figuring him out just as much as he's trying to figure her out. It's just that her intuition isn't anywhere close to his. In Red Dragon, Graham isn't as smart as Clarice, but he has the gift of perfect intuition, which is what puts him on par with Lecter on a more superficial level. Doug, I love you, I think you're absolutely brilliant, but you can be a real fucking idiot sometimes.

How is he an idiot for saying that he didn't like those aspects of the film? I know it is your opinion that he just doesn't "get" them, but just as likely he might have found their execution to be sub-par. There are plenty of movies that have amazing writing and amazing performances but they still have clunky bits where things don't work as intended in regards to the audience. Heck, we have entire movies that are like that simply because the film itself is lacking in getting the audience on board or sometimes just not invoking the emotions they'd hoped for within a particular scene. I don't know you sir, but I feel like you're probably a fan of the books these films were based on and having that knowledge you might be projecting onto a film that didn't set the stage as clearly as you believe. And even if you're right and he just doesn't "get" it, then I'm going to say that still isn't particularly simply his failing alone now is it?

Aaron Simpson True enough. I just got the feeling that you had a lot of inside plot knowledge that you having read the books understand perfectly, but just that the movies might not have done the best job of getting across. I mean lets face it, the book of anything is almost always going to be better, it just has more to work with, it is tons more immersive and good authors are always going to be able to get points across with minimum effort, but film making tends to have to water things down, worry about pacing or audience confusion...in short it just has a lot working against it in even the most amazing of adaptions.

I think Hannibal Lector gets too much credit. He is the villain we love to hate. He isn't genuinely creepy or disturbing. And this is why he is popular. If an actor plays the part too well it becomes off putting and people refuse to give that character credit because we don't even want to remember what we saw because it was so weird. Now Buffalo Bill HE really embodies the part. And as a result the actor is a victim of his own outstanding performance since we try our best to forget that creepy ass dude.
