Non-Catholic Q&A w/ Bishop Barron (December 2021)

Friends, on today's episode of "The Word on Fire Show," I take several questions from non-Catholics, including:
- How does the Catholic Church think about sola Scriptura and Bible interpretation?
- Since we can’t know beyond a reasonable doubt that Christianity is true, why should I become a Christian?
- Any tips for a Protestant transitioning to Catholicism?
- Why are some sins considered mortal?
- Is there a realistic possibility of reuniting the Christian churches, and if not, what are the major stumbling blocks?
- What is the role of saints? Why aren't they considered to be idols?
- What is the Catholic view of the apocrypha (deuterocanonical books)?
- What about apparent contradictions in the Bible? Does this undermine the Bible’s inerrancy?

@@dingbop963 I switched a few times. Catholicism- because of the mass. It is the highest form of prayer. But if you don’t know Jesus- go to a Bible believing evangelical Protestant church to learn the basic message of the gospel and learn scripture. Then, when you truly know the Lord, maybe then look into the Catholic mass.

I am a Baptist who has seriously been considering the path toward the true catholic faith (deciding between the RCC and EO is another matter) and have watched many videos, interviews, etc. on these topics. For whatever reason though, when Bishop Barron said of the saints "they're our friends" with a heartfelt smile, I was overwhelmed with emotion. Never quite heard it put like that. Bishop Barron: I am a protestant teaching in a Catholic school and have been pleasantly surprised at the loving acceptance of my "being" in the Catholic church. Never once judged and always included and valued. Not sure if a conversion is on the horizon, but my view of life has opened up due to the Catholic perspective. I'm sure there will never be a time where we agree on everything, but the desire to find out brings me closer to a more intimate relationship with God and the Catholic community. Thank you for all the insight and humility you bring in this video. Be at peace my friend. -jon

I would agree with Lars here. Being Catholic involves total submission to the teachings. It's OK to doubt, it's not OK to deny. As a new Catholic, my constant prayer was, 'Lord, I don't see how (whichever teaching) could possibly be true, but I know your Church is true. I will accept the Church's teaching, but please open my heart and mind to see how (whichever teaching) makes sense'. Over time, it has worked. But we cannot say 'I disagree with the Chur h on (whatever teaching)' or 'I do not accept (whatever teaching).

I am in Lance’s corner here. There will always be conflicting interpretations on minutiae which is the entire purpose of the Magisterium. SCHOLARS within the church disagree on points, but the Church has to pick one side in order to move on. That does create an official stance, but it does not remove the validity of the contrary interpretation. If you’re going to teach catechism then you have to present the official stance, but in no way are going to go to hell if you don’t fully buy into it. There are disagreements which are worthy of discussion. As a Catholic, I have a serious problem with paid dispensations. It’s not enough to make me leave the church, but it’s crap and has zero scriptural support. Things like this are exactly what gives weight to the argument of Sola Scriptura.

@@josecesena5630 well, many do attend daily Mass, and actually the priests are indeed required to perform it every day. The question on weekly Mass is related to the Sabbath. We follow the Ten Commandments, and one of those is to keep the Sabbath holy. Sabbath is on Saturday for the Jewish faithful because that is part of the Abrahamic covenant. Christians honor the Sabbath on Sunday because Christ rose from the dead on Sunday and ushered in the New Covenant. Hopefully that clarified some things. And hopefully I didn't mess up on any of the technical details. I am not a theologian, but this is what I remember from a homily where this was explained to us.

My whole life, I can attest the powerful intercession of Mary - The Queen of All Saints, St Augustine ( my school’s patron saint), St Therese of the Child Jesus ( my personal saint from childhood) and St Paul ( my go to saint for zeal for God and serving in ministries). When you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and instead of saying, “I’m getting so old; look at all these wrinkles. It’s all downhill from here.” Try a different approach. “Good morning, you good-looking thing. I am made in the image of God. Judith Moore I've read many books on Christianity and cult, and other biblical areas, as translations, I've listened to many preachers and sermons and visited many church's. Here is a truly remarkable Christian, who is able to reach out and speak up as to the true and faithful teachings that follows truly our Lord and saviour, all Robert ever speaks of and expresses always make perfect sense and awareness in a world in desperate need of light, truth and hope.

Hello Bishop Barron and my friends at Word on Fire. I am so happy to watch this video and others you've posted, to learn more about my dear faith. I was privileged to be raised Catholic, but felt pushed out once I started working and living in a large city with its many diversions, I felt I did not measure up. The part of me that wanted not to be known was delighted by it, but the authentic part of me still needed the communal aspect of our faith. All these years later now that I am retired I have found myself again, I have gained forgiveness and really all I want is the fellowship of the Catholic Church and the love of Christ. After everything I've come home. Shows like this were not there when I was a girl in the 70's or when I was struggling in the 80s and 90s to stay on the right course, I mean the right course for my own salvation and that of the whole world, thus I am so grateful to you. I hope Bishop that you can continue even if your role changes because I delight in how you articulate your responses to those who are also searching. You are a wonderful teacher and mentor, and Catholics around the world are honoured by your contributions. I could listen to your sermons, teachings and responses for hours and am fortified by them. I also really benefit by your rosaries and share in the beauty of the art and in your guidance through the decades and mysteries. Please don't go anywhere. Thank you for another wonderful, thought provoking and reassuring program. May God bless you, all your fellows and your good works. And to all those who click on this program, in the words of Saint (Pope) John Paul II, "follow Christ".

As a person from a Catholic country but who built the faith on the protestant teaching, I found it so interesting to see both sides of the story. Honestly, I never saw any major misalignment between both. So impressed by the bishop's knowlegde. Wow, thank you for posting.

Wow, thanks you for answering my question on the saints Bishop Baron! I only got around to listening to this video now in the hope that you had answered my question. I have a great reverence for Catholicism, but my culture is mostly deeply Calvinist or very Pentacostal (to over-simplify), so there is little to no dialogue with Catholics. I have found your channel so helpful, not only in learning about Catholicism, but also how to engage better with our culture as Christians. I am now very encouraged to learn more about the saints and how they can intercede for us.

Not because it's where I belong but because it is the Initial Church which Jesus founded.
