Non-Catholic Q&A w/ Bishop Barron (August 2020)

In today's episode of "The Word on Fire Show," Bishop Barron answers questions from several non-Catholics, including:
- How to foster unity between Protestants and Catholics?
- Why focus on Mary and the saints instead of the Trinity?
- I'm converting to Catholicism, but how will that affect my wife?
- Why doesn't the Church canonize non-Catholics?
- How to recognize genuine spiritual movements of the soul?
- What is apostolic succession?
- Why must bread and wine be used in the Eucharist?

I truly admire non-Catholics who seek and question to learn instead of attacking those who believe and practice it.

And I admire non-Protestants who are respectful and like to learn about our differences as well. 🙂

REASONS FOR CHRIST’S AGONY TODAY “The Holy Mass which is My Calvary way of your redemption is what the enemy is turning to a mere service… My agony is great when I see many of My Priests who leave My Sacred Body and Blood to the non-consecrated priests to serve My people…. My agony is great when I see people receiving the Holy Communion in the hand…* My agony is great when I see My Holy Temple being defiled: driving out the glory of God. Son, disastrous abomination has filled the Church, sitting up in the Holy Place… My agony is great when I see the plan of the evil man destroying My Church with the ordination of women as priests. My agony is great for seeing the enemy filling the hearts of My Priests with the desire from hell to marry… My agony is great when I see a large number of My people who belong to the cult, son, even among those who consecrate themselves to Me… My agony is great when I see the millions of souls who depart daily and nearly all go to Hell because of sins of the flesh. My son, I suffer more greatly for the flow of blood of unborn babies that increases everyday. Their blood disturbs heaven more than the blood of Abel.” Jesus Christ, 12th November 1999, in a lengthy appeal expiating on the sins that he is agonizing over in our times *Concerning the issue of Communion in the hand, Pope John Paul II states: “How eloquently the rite of anointing of the Priests’ hands in our Latin ordination tells a special grace and power of the Holy Spirit is necessary precisely for Priest’s hands! To touch the sacred species and to distribute them with their own hands is a privilege of the ordained.” (Domincae Canae, February 24, 1980) “It is not permitted that the faithful should themselves pick up the consecrated bread and the sacred chalice, still less that they should hand them from one to another.” (Inaestambile Donum, Holy Thursday, 3rd April 1980) OBEY THE CHURCH “Children, you must obey the Church not the evil one. Anyone who comes to destroy the Church is against the Church. The Church is My Body. I plead with you not to quarrel with My clergies. Rather, pray for them. I am the one who chose them and put them in their positions.” Jesus Christ, 5th January 2000 MY MOTHER HAS COME MANY TIMES “My Mother has come many times to you to warn you about the hour. She saw the coming destructions that are coming upon you. She wept for you. She wept bloody tears for you; yet you cannot understand the hour. I in turn, sweated blood in great agony for you. I also wept a stream of tears and blood for love of you. Still you cannot understand the times.” Jesus Christ, 7th April 2000 SUFFERING IS NOT A WASTE “Suffering under obedience gains much grace. Those who understand among them will enjoy their suffering and their persecution. Because in suffering of the Holy Cross is true happiness. If they understand and pray for more suffering and persecution, they will hasten the Glorious Reign. As their suffering increases, the hour of peace approaches.” St. Francis of Assisi in conversation with other saints, 15th July 2000 THE CROSS OF TRUTH “Your name is written in the Book of Life. I will remove millions of years from your Purgatory days in any truth that comes out of your mouth. In the same way, millions of years are added to your Purgatory days for every lie that comes out of your mouth. Children, I appeal to you: receive from me the Royal Cross of Truth.” Jesus Christ, 24th July 2000 YOU ARE CALLED TO COME “Even if the days fall in the hour of the great confusion, you are called to come. Even if the days fall in the hour of forsakenness, you are called to come. Even if it is your sorrowful days, I call you all to come. Children, pray that you will come. Get everything ready before the days come. The hour is already at hand.” Jesus Christ, 7th August 2000 HUMILITY AND PURITY “At the loss of My dear ones, Joseph and my beloved Jesus, Satan tempted Me to despair. I conquered not by human energy, or by violence, or by shouting but by the Fire of Purity and by the Power of Humility. I am the Woman who crushed the head of Satan.” Our Blessed Mother, 28th June 2001 THE THORNY WAY OF LIFE “Children, I say, there is no valuable thing in that place of pleasure and enjoyment. There is no valuable thing in that easy way of life. All the precious treasures; I mean, the treasures of Heaven, are hidden in the thorny way of life. See, I chose the Calvary way, the way of sorrow, the bloody way, full of pains and agony, for your salvation. There is no other way of salvation I found, than the painful way of salvation. Children, do not reject the Calvary way. Though the way is painful, the end is full of happiness.” Jesus Christ, 12th September 2001, during a five days reparation programme in the month of September.

I’m in the same boat as Justin, currently converting (technically reverting by Catholic ways as I was baptized as a baby), and my wife has big issues with the Church. We were married as Protestants 15 years ago and then fell into atheism and non-belief. One thing I have found comforting during this trying yet exciting time is 1 Corinthians 7:14 which says, “For the unbelieving husband is consecrated through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is consecrated through her husband. Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is they are holy.”

Bishop Barron, I am a graduate engineering student and an aspiring saint. I really hope that grant and conference will help bring to light the relationship that's the church has with science. Not competitive, rather complimentary. I will be watching closely and sharing with my friends! Best of luck and may God bless your ministry!

I was raised Protestant, but 3 years ago I set out to learn about Roman Catholicism. I set out to learn, not just to disprove Catholicism and think on why every article of faith was wrong. I am now a convert to Catholicism and I realize it is the Church our Lord established. These questions are the ones I was glad to hear the answers to over my faith journey, which ultimately led me home.

The last question was good one. The response is profoundly the best one and that's what I love catholic Church a lot and am always happy to be a catholic from my birth. How unworthy I am? But my Lord and my God Jesus Christ poured his grace on me to be a catholic from birth. Catholic Church will never lean to worldly ideas to change the core doctrines of Jesus himself. How beautiful is that to be a part of catholic Church. Thank you Lord.

Yohanes R.T.B, no. I’m not understanding the vivisection. We should be concerned less with our affiliations and more to our imitation of Jesus of Nazareth. There are plenty of Protestant ministers that are heretics that I do not recognize the authority of. Likewise they are in the Catholic Church. The faith that I have maybe weaker than many Catholics. But Christ still calls me to pray for those who to love my enemies and pray for those who persecute me. Whether they are inside the Catholic Church or outside of the Catholic Church.

Another analogy regarding asking Mary and Saints to intercede: Anyone who is in the service industry understands - if a parent and children come to you, if you talk to the children, and ask their thoughts, and ask them questions, what does the parent do? They are not jealous that you are asking the child's input. In fact, they are beaming and excited that you spend so much time asking their child about their interest. If that is true of us early humans who love imperfectly, then it seems how much more would our Heavenly Father beam with great joy at others asking His adopted children for their help? As I learned this in my work, I have often thought of the communion of saints! Fwiw.

My wife, a Catholic from birth. My family was not overly religious, but was a resident Methodist. My Grandma felt terrible that two of her Grandchildren married Catholic and had Catholic great grandchildren. My wife never pressed me, but my life needed direction. 20 years later I converted. I meant more to me, than her. I think we often put human ideals. I have always been grateful to the path I have walked. Always felt a great connection with St Paul. I always ask Mary to intercede for my children and grandchildren. That way I can let them go. Intercessory prayer has been critical to my prayer life.

Suddenly, after watching this video, I realize that I’ve always considered the early, pre-reformation, saints as being ‘my saints too.’ Whereas, I’ve always though of the later saints as exclusively ‘Catholic’ saints. How odd we are! 😳

It's a wild guess, but I imagine it's that long so they can extend it out in front of themselves, either to gaze upon the cross or to use it for some blessings. Also, if it were mounted on his chest as described when wearing a cassock, the shape of the chain would resemble a set of arms acting to hold up the cross. The upper arm extends from the neck, dips below the chest (the elbow), and the lower arms come back up to the cross.

Jesus got his crown of thorns through his Passion. As to Mary’s crown of roses: in the Middle Ages, a “chaplet” was a crown of flowers. It’s also the French word for the Rosary. Praying the Rosary was seen as weaving a garland of roses into a crown to honour Mary (each individual prayer representing one rose).

To follow up with the last question regarding the wine used during Eucharist, I am prohibited from drinking and feel deprived spiritually being that every Sunday I am not allowed to partake in the wine, despite my passion for the faith. Is there any way a can compensate for not being able to have the blood of Christ, or will not drinking lead me to sin? @@heidileighvlogs1675 Justification is getting right with God through Christ. Sanctification is becoming better thanks to your openess and cooperation with God's grace. Glorification is when you're healed of all your imperfections so you can enter heaven, and for some people it will be in the form of purgatory. Purgatory is when you could have been much better in your life situation but you rejected God's grace in some way. But you're still forgiven because you didn't reject Christ's salvation with an unrepented, deliberate, grave sin. You're not going to hell, but your soul needs to be transformed, and it'll be painful. Catholics call the whole process "salvation". Protestants tend to call "salvation" only the justification part. That's why we say "faith and works" and Protestants "only faith"; and why we say "we're being saved" and Protestants "we're saved". The forgiveness of God (justification) doesn't depend on our merits. We humbly ask for it and receive it as a gift through Christ. Someone trying to earn Heaven by praying very much sounds laughable to me. But we pray to God so He makes the process easier for others on purgatory, for example: prayers, masses, indulgences. It's not a trade, because nothing we do "forces" God to to anything, so we don't "buy" anything. That would be like saying we "buy" good things to happen when we pray for living friends. But I understand why someone would be misunderstood and believe that.

Bishop Barron, I loved your explanation about this non-sense on the pectoral cross. If you have the opportunity, please check the Wikipedia article on Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. There is a picture of him with his pectoral cross stuck between the buttons of his pocketless cassok. I doubt any traditionalist would dare question his orthodoxy.

That last question is real close to one that I have. Bishop Barron, please could you cover "Communion under one kind" (bread only, no wine, for the laity), as is widely practiced in the Catholic Church? Protestantism has nothing like that, and to many of us lifelong "Evangelical" Protestants, it's very strange and a stumbling block when we first learn of it. Jesus said "blood AND body"/"bread AND wine" -- and I just don't know how to get around that. Over the past several months I've now learned to appreciate and respect the concept of the "deposit of faith" in the magisterium. In accordance with that, I know that the Catholic Church does nothing flippantly, that there's got to be a good explanation, as there has been for everything else I used to criticize (I've come a LONG way -- I wouldn't countenance Catholicism for even 2 seconds for most of my 55+ years, and now I'm here, months now, eagerly looking in, hopeful!). But I still find this one practice troubling and in need of clarification. It's my one real remaining hesitation. Thank you!

Just today that same question was addressed to Jesuit scholar Fr. Mitch Pacwa in his show Scripture and Tradition in the EWTN channel. He explained that the practice of receiving the Eucharist in one species developed during the time of the plague for health reasons. Catholic teaching allows for this because Christ's whole humanity and divinity is present fully and completely in the smallest particle of the Eucharist, so you don't need to receive it in both species. You receive all of Jesus if you receive a single drop from the chalis or one crumb from the Host. In some churches Catholics receive it in both species, sometimes by intinction or dipping the host in the wine. Do not worry, you are not missing out by receiving the Lord in only the bread. I hope this helps.

In relation to Thomas Merton: In “A Search for Solitude”, first published 25 years after his death, pondering about the possibility of founding a monastery in Latin America, and after simply looking at a map, Merton writes: “Venezuela: Perhaps the best country for us to start in...Near Caracas, or near Valencia or near Maracay. Or in the mountains overlooking the lake of Valencia. Or on the other slope looking at the sea. Or near Barquisimeto...It gets better and better when I think of the Andes around Merida” (Thomas Merton, “A Search for Solitude. The Journals of Thomas Merton”, Volume Three 1952-1960, Harper, 1996, pp. 113-114). Now, there are three main monasteries in this country. The Benedictine Abbey “San José de Güigüe”, which indeed overlooks the lake of Valencia (the land for this location was acquired by the congregation in the late 80s); the Trappist Monastery “Nuestra Señora de Coromoto”, near the city of Barquisimeto and founded in 1985 (after the family of one of the nuns donated the land); and the Trappist Monastery “Nuestra Señora de los Andes”, founded in 1987, which is located precisely around Mérida. As far as I know (and I know this for a fact in the case of the Benedictine Abbey), none of these congregations had any idea of Thomas Merton 1957’s musings concerning the possibility of founding monasteries in exactly these three locations. Interesting, isn’t it?

In fact, the idea that I can't compel them in any way (it would be wrong of me to do so) leaves my conscience all the more free to speak. The person critiquing the cross-hidden-in-the-pocket situation has a point. It would be great if the cross weren't hidden under a bushel, as it were. Isn't it in the spirit of Vatican II to take the wealth that is in the Church's keeping and put it on display? What displays the wealth that is in the Church's keeping, better than the reminder of the sacrifice of our Lord? I think that seeing every bishop's cross on full display would be good for the morale of every Christian -- Catholic, Orthodox, or even a Protestant such as myself. This small practical change could have significant positive consequences to a somewhat demoralized modern Christendom. So that's what it would do for me, if the Bishops decided this idea had some merit. (Or maybe they would decide otherwise. There could be arguments against it, probably related to humility. People who know things that I don't probably have something to say on the subject). I suppose arguing too much about it is a bit like quibbling about whether the benediction gesture should be performed with the whole hand or just a few fingers. On the other hand, it might be good to practice arguing over things like this, to establish some norms and ground rules for weightier arguments. What do you think?

I think Christ also chose bread and wine for symbolic reasons: wheat has to die first before it can be made into bread and fed to people; grapes have to be crushed so its juice is emptied out before it can be given as drink. It's the same way Christ had to die first, and also emptied of his blood. (Interestingly, the Eucharistic bread must be made of wheat; and wine, grapes.)

Christ did use symbolic language to describe his death for our salvation when he said that unless a grain of wheat dies and falls to the ground it won't bear fruit. So you are right in the symbolic language to describe Christ. But, when Christ taught about giving us his flesh to eat as real food he did not mean it symbolically. In John 6:66, the crowds left Christ after he spoke literally, Christ didn't clarify his language when the crowds became outraged and confused, rather he reemphasized that He meant it literally when he said "Truly Truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood you do not have life in you."

Are you referring to their clerics or vestments at Mass? Clerics, like the one Bishop Barron is wearing in the thumbnail, are worn by priests as daily wear and are by no means lavish. They are very different from what modern people wear but that is the point of a uniform. To help people distinguish who/what you are based on what you’re wearing. Uniforms in general also carry symbolism in themselves. Things like what color they are or what pieces make up the uniform. For example, clerics are black to represent mourning/penance/death to remind the laity about the transience of life. Vestments are for a different purpose and can be very extravagant and beautiful. Vestments are only worn during liturgy and their purpose is different from a normal uniform. As a short explanation, they are beautiful for the same reason that people want to wear their “Sunday best” at Church or for the same reason the choir wants to sing beautiful music or the architect wants to design a beautiful church. Which is to glorify God in a particular way at a particular time. While it is true that the Apostles did not wear the same clothes that priests wear today, it is fair to say nobody wears the same clothes from 2000 years ago. It should be pointed out that high priests in Jewish tradition DID wear distinctive garments and the Gospel of John explicitly calls out the fact that Jesus was wearing a priestly garment on his way to Crucifixion. So aside from the practical and aesthetic reasons for having clerics and vestments, there is a long and ancient Judeo-Christian tradition of specifically priestly garments.

Pictures from Vatican 2 with hundreds of men in their formal hats and robes is off putting to me. Will there one day be a Pope who disregards human tradition of applying meaning to every movement and vestment. Surely in the spirit of Vatican 2 this would be acceptable. The famous "traditions of men", which can be good or bad but should never be considered unchangeable. What I like about clergy vestements is they're a symbol of their consecration to God outside liturgy, and inside it they point to Him instead of the men who wear them. However, they also have many symbols attached to them that no longer speaks the same. For example, the golden crosses of some cardinals are meant to represent the purity of faith, but what everyone sees is waste. The cloak some bishops still use is pretty cool and it must have some hidden meaning, but what people see is pride. Symbols are meant to convey a message: if they no longer do it right, it's time to discard them.

Just thought of something regards to Mary from Maryland's question regarding Catholics, the saints and prayer. Protestants hold the sacred Scriptures in such high esteem, and rightly so. Well, in the Book of Hebrews, in chapter 11, the author spends an entire chapter regaling us with the story of that "great cloud of witnesses" down through salvation history from Abel to Abraham to Moses, etcetera so the veneration of the saints isn't even "unbiblical". In addition, I was reminded of the story of Jesus recounting the story of Abraham and Dives / the rich man. Jesus recounts the story in such a way that Abraham is obviously alive, and the rich man is petitioning that Abraham bring him a drink of water to cool his thirst. Is that not the invocation of the saints on our behalf? There must be other examples of this in the NT.

Do Catholics believe that Jesus is God or God's son? What I mean by asking if he's believed to be "God's son" is son as in son and therefore not God but his son (like for example divine in some way maybe bc he's sent by God/is God's son, but is not God- just his son? Or is Jesus believed to not "actually" be God's son when referred to as God's son, and actually as God and just called "son" in the bible in a non-literal way? I also heard people say Jesus is both God and God's son but with my definition of " God's son" this can't be as these are two completely different things. It's like saying my pet is both a bird and fish..both can't be true at the same time.. And if Jesus IS believed to be God, so then just to confirm God doesn't have a son, there's only then God, right? This is just a very confusing thing I want to understand, thanks in advance if you could answer!

I reccomend you look up The Venereable Bishop Sheen explanation on the Holy Trinity. He does an amazing job at it. He explains it like the 3 different forms of water, there is ice, liquid and gas but nevertheless the chemical is still known as H2O. Although it comes in different forms it is still water.

@@sangbum60090 Did you happen to watch Archbishop Sheens explanation on the Holy Trinity? I did not mean it in the Modalism matter because that is heresy. We as Christians believe in the Trinity, three distinct persons who are not the same yet compromise one eternal being. My explanation falls short compared to many others, essentially it is a mystery. If anyone were to fully explain it in a way that anyone would understand than it would no longer be a mystery.

The Holy Trinity is the fundamental Christian dogma. It teaches that God is one, but He is not one person. God is one " substance" or "nature". This nature is possessed fully and equally by three distinct divine persons who we call the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The first person is the Father and from all eternity He generates the Son. So, the Son possesses the same divine nature as the Father. Therefore, the Son is God just as the Father is God. From all eternity, the Father and the Son spirate the third person, the Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit also possess the same divine nature as the Father and the Son. To conclude, the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. They each possess the one and only divine nature. So there is only one God, but He is not one person..but 3 persons.

Re: 1st Commandment. Please forgive me, pray for me, I'm going to make what I consider to be an observation, but could easily be misconstrued. I just want to say that it is possible for the idolatry to swing the other way. I know a lot of Protestants (these are personal anecdotes -- I am NOT claiming that this is widespread in Protestantism, NOR that the Majority of Protestants do this) who attest a personal relationship with Christ and God, who sort of unconsciously worship worldly gods like Sex, or Alcohol, or Guns, or Career, or Nationalism. Just something to be conscious of. If I was going to risk Idolatry, I'd bet on the Blessed Mother before I banked on some of these other things.

Catholics say that asking the saints to pray for you is like asking your friend to pray for you. What happens if this friend dies, do we still ask him to pray for you? Then isn't it like praying to the dead?

'common enemy', modern secularism. Why talk about 'enemy'? Secularists are the enemy? Not very Christian. I would add, there are plenty of Protestants who regard Catholics as the 'enemy'. You don't like that much, I imagine.

@@BishopBarron Thank you for replying, Bishop, fair enough, I see what you mean, although in the same way that religious fundamentalists may shout loudest, so can secular fundamentalists, but neither represents the reasonable majority. Living in Italy, where crosses routinely adorn secular locations it seems the two can co-exist. As Jesus also said - 'Give unto Caeser...' Yes, Italy like other 'Christian' countries is drifting away from the church, but does it help the church to 'blame' secularism, or would it do better to look to itself? After all, the church was born in a world, as you began by saying, where there was only 1, plus 12 (plus poor overlooked Mary, His most beloved) - the ultimate 'secular' world. I see little Catholic proselytizing - instead, the expectation appears to be 'they will/ should come'. I'm not sure that this is how the Apostles went about it. But anyway, thank you for taking the time.

I really do wish you’d drop use of the term non-Catholic. It is condescending to say the least. Historic Protestantism subscribes to the Nicene Creed. That means historic Protestants believe they are part of the Catholic Church. Historic Protestants reject being called non-Catholic. If you must describe someone as a “non” at least be respectful and use the term non-Roman Catholic or in the case of atheists and Muslims, non-Christian. Pentecostalism and Evangelicalism have little to do with historic Protestantism and really are a separate category.

Here is a barn burner for ya, if Jesus died for our sins and conquered sin and death, and in Deuteronomy we are told that the sins of the father are not the sins of the child, etc, then exactly how does the Church manage to tip around those very big facts and go, whoops everyone is born with original sin, sorry. Answer is, a convoluted pile of B.S that was made up to exert more power over followers. Nothing to do with honestly wanting to help people.
