Listener Q&A w/ Bishop Barron (November 2019)

Friends, in today’s episode of the “Word on Fire Show,” I answer questions from listeners all over the world. These include:
- If animals have distinct personalities, then why does the Church teach they don’t have souls?
- What is being conveyed by identifying Jesus as the New Adam and Mary as the New Eve?
- Do you believe we have a predestined “purpose”?
- What can we say about the love of God to someone who has lost an infant to disease, or a parent to suicide?
- If evil is a privation of good (nonbeing), how can demons be pure nonbeing?
- Why do some people say, after they die, they wish to see God “face to face”? What does this mean?
- Does the Incarnation bring about the fulfillment of nature, or is Jesus’ divinity something supernaturally added to an already complete human nature?
If you have a question, be sure to send it in via AskBishopBarron.com.

I am 80 years old and I have listened over the years to programs that ask questions like "if you could go back in time to meet someone who would it be? I have heard Einstein, Aristotle, Washington, etc. I often wonder why no one wants to meet Jesus.

I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Major Depression about half-a-year ago, so I have dealt with tormented feelings the majority of my life. I take medication for it now, but it still seeps through at times. When you talked about seeing God for all that He is (around the 26:35 mark) in the afterlife, I had the greatest sense of peace I have felt in years. There was something in those words that soothed my soul. I just wanted to thank you for that, Bishop Barron.

@vikedude 123 You have my utter respect and admiration for writing such a complex text. You should surely consider writing books, if you aren ´t already doing that. Should you be "only" a layman (I mean no uni degree in religion nor a priest) my astonishment goes beyond words. THANK YOU !

I had to pause the video when you spoke about the devil and how his mere existence is in God’s hands. It was super deep to me because it made me think that God is so perfect in his grace he allows the worst/most evil being in existence, to exist. Just beautiful undeniable proof that God is graceful. That’s just what i took from it 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@danharazin3605 Nothing is all evil, evil requires good, etc. Good can come from suffering. The suicide of a child can bring one to faith. But there is a pure good. And that's the problem. A mix of suffering should be unnecessary if there is a pure good. While I acknowledge that some pain in life is necessary, true horrific and sustained suffering, really isn't. My fear is that the legitimization of suffering becomes an excuse for it. We should work to eliminate it. Not all forms of pain, but those forms of endless months of torment. This is what I call suffering. And sharing or permitting it cannot be anything but evil.

Thank you for an elegant and succinct answer to my question! I’ll be sure to pick up a copy of De Lubac’s book. As an amateur theologian and someone following a contemplative path on the spiritual journey, this helps confirm a deep intuition about the mystery of grace in the natural world. Thanks again for all the great work you guys do! -Andrew from Los Angeles

@@Woga000 I'm going by common sense only. Only Man has an immortal soul, animals do not. God put animals on Earth FOR OUR USE AND ENJOYMENT (NOT to be cruel to them, of course!) However, since there's no sorrow or pain in Heaven, it's quite possible that God would allow little Johnny to have his little puppy with him in order to NOT MISS HIM! And if an Army veteran was saved by his German shepherd and loves him, he MAY have him. I don't know for sure, l but I believe in God's infinite Love, which transcends our understanding. In dealing with Godly things, like Heaven, I err on the side of His kindness.

I have a feeling that we know about as much about the interior life of animals and their peculiar relationship with God as we do about angels. Not much. I bet we’ll be surprised and delighted when we die and find out how intertwined the whole spectrum and hierarchy of God’s creatures are. I also don’t believe that the Creator, who seems to have created a universe in which even simple matter is not annihilated, but changes form, would let a soul fade into nothingness-even an animal soul. It seems inconsistent. Sure Heaven and Earth will “pass away,” but I would bet that speaks of a death and transformation, like what happened to Christ’s body at the death and resurrection, not annihilation followed by a brand new creation ex nihilo without any sort of continuity. Of course, I’m just speculating.
