    Shalom Bishop, Brenden, all at Word on Fire and to my fellow viewers (sisters and brothers in Christ). Praise be Jesus for all graces given, each to their own needs, and foremost, give us the wisdom to recognize those (graces) offered and may we humbly accept them, this is my prayer. Until next time, God bless.

    "Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves"(Mt 10:16) - love Bishop Baron's response to the question regarding qualities of a good evangelist. We need men and women with pure hearts and sharp minds to share the Word of God! And he is a shining example of someone who has put in the hard work to have clear and incisive responses to difficult philosophical and theological questions. We may not all achieve his level of intellect, but we should all strive for little improvements, every day, so as to provide a reason for the joy within us. Great episode Bishop Barron!

    Hi Bishop Barron, As an atheist, it is difficult for me to see the difference between believing in one religion or another. To me it seems that all religions make the same claims that their religion is the true religion. However, I find that the people claiming this all point to their Holy Book to do so. What is a good way for someone to figure out which religion is true given this fact and the fact that all religions can point to some truths in their Holy Book that could be proven to be historically accurate or shown to be relevant today? Thank you. P.S. Thank you for being open to discussing these matters in such a non-judgemental way. I find it difficult to speak about these issues as I worry about offending people when I really do not wish to.

    start by looking for the fruits that the religion bears. once you narrow it down to the ones that speak to you, look for internal consistency within their doctrine. fruit that leads to continued life = good, internally consistent = real

    Well consider that we believe that God is Three Divine Persons in One God. Now consider these, the human family as it works out most basically biologically is a mother, a father, and a child or children that results from their love. Consider that we believe that God the Father begot God the Son from all eternity as the Logos and God the Father and God the Son seeing the infinite perfection, beauty, goodness etc. of God in one another and sigh their love for one another and this love they share from all eternity is the Holy Spirit, lover, beloved, and the love they share. (These are all metaphorical as an approximate to God as well if He is real, then He made us and sustains us from nothing so is by necessity greater than us as He is why we are and continue to be.) So God is a relationship of love and the human family reflects this two parents love leads to a child. Thus all such natural unions represent this aspect of God. Or consider that time is experienced as past, present, and future and we live in three spatial dimensions in both of these, each part is a distinct thing but indistinguishable from the whole. Consider that a triangle is the most basic of geometric polygons and appears in pretty much all the others as a result. Or consider how in any form of relationship on its most basic level id, there is the subject, the object, and the relation they have to one another. These are not proof of course on their own, but one would expect that an artists painting or an author's story would reflect the author in some form if one knew how to trace it. With the above in mind, consider what we value and what we know is good and true and consider which, religion holds up to that best when people act as they are supposed to within it and see if the divine within the system are consistent. Consider investigating with good faith, any miracles that are claimed, that at least can rule out the charlatans. But in that also see if the miracles are consistent with what one would expect from such a divinity and if it would be consistent with the Creator of the world. Consider which hold up to reasonable scrutiny in both these ways to determine internal consistency. I say Creator because look at the world and its form. It is of a single order, which one would expect if there were one Creator. Compare that with humanity, we present redundant and conflicting organization and thus our efforts show they are not of one actor. There does not appear to be this form of competition in the way the natural world is made up or operates. Even in many polytheistic religions, there will be a single originitating deity or force that made all things. Consider also that the three great monotheistic religions of the world do claim to worship the same God originating at the story of Abraham (thus the term Abrahamic religions). For Christianity, the central moment is the Resurrection of our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ and in Christianity is true, Judaism is true in its historical claims as Christ only makes sense througg the lens of the Old Testament as we believe He is its fulfillment and if the Gospel accounts are true, He does fulfill the Law and the Prophets. Consider, if the religion has them, the Saints or heroes of the religion, do they seem to be paragons of virtue, even if they have flaws, do they either admit their flaws or are their flaws as understood within the religion not celebrated. Also are they real historical people as far as we can tell? Have they made any prophecies that have been fulfilled? These are all suggested from m own truth-seeking journey. I am a Christian, but I also know God holds up to standards of Truth as I believe He is the Truth, so I have confidence that He will exceed any such standards if made in good reason and without an absolute denial of Him. We can not absolutely prove anything because it is a choice of the will to accept and to believe. Keys unlock doors, not walls. I hope all of this helps you in some way. God bless you and give you eyes to see the Truth. Through our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, Who is the Divine Wisdom, and the Divine Mercy. Amen. We can discuss any of these or anything you might come up with.

    Sabs ~ Hello Sabs, may I just say that I am sorry people criticize atheists and agnostics. I follow Bishop Barron as a former Catholic and I so appreciate him for not shrinking away from real questions people have. I was also away from any church for over 20 years, so I know that looking at the behavior of some Christians can be a complete turnoff. I'm not as intellectual as Bishop Barron, but I have definitely had my questions throughout the years. The bottom line for me now, is that every day I have a firm foundation in my life; at the core of my being; that I know will not be shaken. I know that I continue to fall in love with a God who is Father, brother and friend to me, and who loves me. I don't think any of the other religions portray such a God of Love. As my favorite Catholic/Christian musician, John Michael Talbot, (please check him out) says, other religious leaders spoke about the "way" to God; Jesus said he "is" the way. I leave you in the capable hands of Bishop Barron, and moreso, in the hands of God, who probably planted the seeds of a seeking mind & heart deep within your soul. I also appreciate that you did not profess your atheism in a spirit of anger or criticism. (There is another Protestant leader/apologist named Ravi Zacahrias, who recently died. But if you look at his work, he loves to answer all kinds of questions too, esp on top universities of the world like Oxford.)

    @God Loves You Hello God Loves You, I appreciated your reply to my question and I appreciate that you took the time to write it all out for me. I must say that I am a bit confused by what you are saying. Please correct me if I misunderstand you but I am reading that you are taking how we count years to show some proof of the credibility of Jesus? From what I understand, the years, just like the months, are a human construct to keep everyone on the same page. Using the terms AD/CE had more to do with Christianity's reign in the Roman Empire and its subsequent ruling and migration to other countries rather than a claim to the truth of Jesus (if that makes sense). Yes it is universally accepted, however universal acceptance does not necessarily show truth. As an example, hundreds of years ago it was universally accepted that the Sun rotates around the Earth. It's acceptance for hundreds of years simply meant that for hundreds of years people were wrong.

    Dear Bishop, You have my undying thanks for the answering of my question (5:04-9:18). May I say, I can think of no other theologian whose diligent labouring of love is so oft (and so beautifully) utilized in my meagre attempt at evangelizing the culture - and I am a confessional Lutheran seminarian. I can barely imagine just how exhausting it must be to serve our Lord so unceasingly, and so well. Do take heart, I pray, in the knowledge that your exertion touches the hearts of hurting people with the very love of Christ - and such is a most magnificent affair. I pray for you all, may you not grow tired of doing the good. God bless you and keep you, always. Kindly, Peter J. Hanekom

    Thank you once again Bishop Barron for making yourself available to so eloquently respond to our many questions. First, I preordered the Bible’s Evangelist package. I loved all of them, kept one and I am gifting the others. If I may, you responded to the question regarding Socialism by saying the Church is against it. Being born in Cuba you can imagine my position on Socialism and Communism. However, is the church also against social democracies? Furthermore then, how was Dorothy Day made a saint? Thank you.

I don’t know if it’s the influence of my Protestant background, but I would like to know how Catholics ‘approach’ her and experience an affinity with her. Right. Remember that we do not worship the Virgin Mary as some Protestant denominations think. We simply pay tribute to her for being a Saint, for being the Mother of Christ. Pray a Hail Mary each day; here in Spain, before we confess, we say "Ave Maria Purisima". Since she was so pure, us sinners look to her as a symbol of virtue and pray to her to avoid falling into tempation. Hope that helps.

    As usual, Bishop Barron has great answers to the hard questions. The only thing that he could have added was that in the "Was Jesus a socialist" question the largest distinction between Jesus and Socialists that proves Jesus was never advocating for it and applies to the act of the apostles story that was mentioned is that Jesus always advocates for the free will of the human to realize the beauty of charity and giving to the poor themselves whereas socialism is built on force, it does not teach morality, but instead tries to force it upon people. The act of doing so in realizing hurts people's willingness to give, because they never truly gain an understanding as to why the giving is important. Many Pope's do discuss this though in more detail as he meantioned

  • @RicardoGarcia-ib8ro

    @RicardoGarcia-ib8ro

    4 жыл бұрын

    Dear Bishop Barron and Scott. In my opinion one more clear approach will be an Augustinian approach. Instead of talking of pre-destination talk about prescience in God. God because knows the complete chain of causes in history also will know the results. In this process who knows the causes does not interfere with human decisions, because we actually made them and want them. For example I know that you and me are going to sin in some part of our lives, it does not imply that I caused you to sin, so prescience does not imply a suppression of free will. God serves his grace to all creation in different ways and levels some in their free will will respond better, but the response is completely ours. If there was a insufficient means to reach God there will be no condemnation, because there is no negligence. The destine concept seems more like a pagan concept, where human destiny was force and no matter what they want or do it will be determined from something else and this is different from the prescience concept in God. I hope you can find this useful. God bless you.

    Go into a Catholic Church and you will find the statues of many historical figures, such as Jesus, The Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and often any number of Saints. Statues reflect a culture's values. They may serve as "sign posts" of a loving culture as in the case of the Catholic Church, or they may be a warning to the dangers lurking in the hearts of a nation's denizens. Either way, they are useful in navigating sometimes uncertain waters. To merely pull them down does not change the heart of the culture. The blessings or problems remain, but are more hidden. God bless.

    A significant difference between the activity of God with respect to the elect and the reprobate concerns God’s justice. The decree and fulfillment of election provide mercy for the elect while the efficacy of reprobation provides justice for the reprobate. God shows mercy sovereignly and unconditionally to some, and gives justice to those passed over in election. That is to say, God grants the mercy of election to some and justice to others. No one is the victim of injustice. To fail to receive mercy is not to be treated unjustly. God is under no obligation to grant mercy to all-in fact He is under no obligation to grant mercy to any. He says, “I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy” (Rom. 9). The divine prerogative to grant mercy voluntarily cannot be faulted. If God is required by some cosmic law apart from Himself to be merciful to all men, then we would have to conclude that justice demands mercy. If that is so, then mercy is no longer voluntary, but required. If mercy is required, it is no longer mercy, but justice. What God does not do is sin by visiting injustice upon the reprobate. Only by considering election and reprobation as being asymmetrical in terms of a positive-negative schema can God be exonerated from injustice.

    Really? John 6 has nothing to do with the Eucharist just before it came way before the Last Supper? Lol! Really funny reasoning. But Jesus always talked about his death and resurrection even from the beginning, way before these things happened. Does that equally mean those events never occurred, just because Jesus talked about them early on? Isn't it any longer possible to talk about something that is yet to be done in the future?

    The term real presence as used by the church fathers is not transubstantiation. There were several points of view in the early church on exactly what real presence means. Transubstantiation was not one of them. This understanding of real presence was not known in the early church. It was a later development. In fact it wasn’t declared dogma until the 12th century. Even then there were competing views on real presence. The double predestination as described here fails to accurately describe what Luther and Calvin actually taught. Particularly the idea posited here that the reformers believed in an arbitrary God is nonsense.

    Really, God can love some more that others? Our God is spiteful?
