Faith, Science, and Evangelization

Friends, it was such a delight to see so many people come together for the 2023 Wonder Conference on the harmony of faith and science. My keynote address explored three philosophical paths beyond scientism, which holds that authentic truth claims can be made only in regard to those matters treatable through the scientific method.
Stay tuned for Wonder 2024!

The more I study science, the more I believe in God.” - Albert Einstein. On his 50th Birthday “I am not an atheist,” he began. “The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws.”--Albert Einstein

Some persons in the Church do not know what is FAITH and what is EVANGELIZATION, and what priests and bishops in the Church have to do. EVANGELIZATION Jesus said to the eleven disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations ....teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.." (Matthew's Gospel 28 : 18 -20) ABOUT OFFICE OF BISHOP Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ, wrote to Timothy, "to charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine... whereas the aim of our charge is LOVE that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith" (1Timothy 1 : 3) Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus, wrote to Titus, "a bishop must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to confute those who contradict it" ( Titus 1 : 7, 9)

@@glynissequeira5544 From the laity perspective, we are called to be witnesses for Christ. It is a form of evangelization. Faith without work is dead according to Apostle John. We are called to provide our life testimonies to others in words and deeds in the environment where we live and work. Preach the Gospel all the time but use words if we must.

It brings glory to God and Christ Jesus to see so many sons of Abraham, who were once lost, now going back to their Overseer and Maker through the light of Christ. Israel's false shepherds certainly grieved God's Spirit by robbing Him of His worshippers and drove out His wisdom that guided all their prophets sent to them. He certainly is faithful, even though they rebelled, and waits patiently for the promise He made to Abraham. Israel still gave birth to His Son and Savior of the world, being a blessing to all nations. No one can confine God's understanding and His plans for mankind. The God who created heavens and earth has a Son and, being a Son and born King, inherits everything and has brought Him glory. Abraham, His servant, who was given the land of Israel on earth, still has descendants who seek His heavenly Kingdom, the New Jersualem, which will be an eternal Kingdom, coming from heaven with all those prophets and saints who waited for that Day!

Great talk Bishop Barron. I am on fire after hearing your talk. I am a STEM high school teacher and a catechist. We are facing the culture that wants to cancel or slient us when wanting to speak the truth about our Catholic tradition. Totally agree that we need to incorporate science, technolog and mathematics in our belief system to deepening our understanding of the universe that God created. There should not be any conflict between science and religion. Knowing God makes us fully alive as you pointed out. We should not be afraid to speak the truth despite being bullied or persecuted by the left in society. Thank you and may God continue to bless your ministry.

I’m not sure what is going on in the Catholic Church on a whole. Where I live in rural East Tennessee my church has for years been small one service on sundays maybe 30-40 people. That was 4 years ago. Today there are closer to 200 with standing room only most weeks. They also have more people in confirmation class than they use to have in the whole church. When I was a kid in the late 80s in Florida we had thousands going to our church and only 7 people in my confirmation class. Something is changing. I only hope they can capitalize on it. My wife and I crave more from the Catholic Church than just one standard mass. We need more.

All very nice Bishop Barron. I totally agree with you. Scientism is bad. Science doesn't disprove the existence of God. But the main problem for young people is that science conflicts with the LITERAL reading of the Bible. Unfortunately, this probably is the main hurdle. You should make video on that topic. Thank you for all your great videos!

O, yeah. My parents, especially mother, very strongly believe that science is against the Bible and the God, and all the religion should be thrown away. All their arguments can be broken by reading the Bible not literally. For example, nobody believes that the cosmos was created during 6 days in our understanding. Because God is exist regardless of time and space, as He is intangible. As for me, "days" are periods, which really lasted for billions of years. He created gravity (or sth that created gravity), that made the Great Bang, and it begun.

When Bishop Barron addresses Science and Religion and philosophy, I always learn a lot. Some of what I learn as a secular Catholic is what Barron does not talk about. It is very true that there is one true Science set against the many true Religions and that is what drives the emerging secular Religion of the Nones, not really dumbing down. Our children are learning how to live good and moral lives with the Grand Narratives of a new secular Religion, not from the Grand Narratives of Science. Science represents meaning and purpose for many scientists despite its nihilism just as Religion represents meaning and purpose for many evangelicals like Barron despite the many conflicting truths of Religions, but it is the nihilism of Science that is what all Religions need to emphasize to make their many cases. Barron does remind us very well about the nihilism of Science but then he evangelizes only his one true Religion. However, there are many, many true Religions that all show our children how to live good and moral lives and yet only one true nihilism of Science. Barron does not like my favorite philosopher Kant and does not mention the many true Religions from the Schism and Reformation much, nor does he mention Islam or the Eastern Vedas, Daoist, and Confucius Religions that teach most people in the world how to live good and moral lives. I am a secular Catholic because I believe in just the one true Religion that shows people how to lead good moral lives and my one true secular Religion has pieces of all true Religions despite their conflicting truths. My secular Religion then gives purpose and meaning to the nihilism of my Science...

Ok, I can understand and absolutely agree with this man's reasoning about God's existence, our very "being" is proof of it, that does make sense. However, I don't quite see how it points to the rules and directions for worshipping God. I mean, we can identify that He is real but all the ceremony and precise accordances with the traditions of the Christian faith seem arbitrary and very much man made. Like we're clutching at rules to follow for the praising of God yet He is far beyond our capacity to comprehend, understand or ritually follow in the manner of His choosing. Anyway, respect to the Christian community and thank you for a fascinating speech.

I think Bishop Barron should explore his ideas of the culture of self creation and the idea of the competiveness of God and the world. If God is conceived of as a being in the world then my self creation requires that he be rejected. If he exists outside the universe and is my creator then my act of self creation is at best futile. It would be really interesting to hear him consider these two ideas together. I think they are deeply related.

The issue scientists have with organized religion is not the belief that application of the scientific method is the only way of knowing things but the claim that faith is a reliable way of reaching the truth. As Hebrews 11:1 says: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" - ie. believing things in the absence of evidence. Many people are happy to accept that there may be an infinite power and presence underlying the cosmos. Hwoever, it seems absurd to believe that the only access to this infinite being is through acceptance of the convoluted dogmas and bureaucratic ritual practices of the Catholic Church. No wonder young people are abandoning the church in droves.

Geometrical figures are not the same as Forms. The former are invisible because they are the beyond-limit concepts (which are at heart of calculus). The latter are visible concrete functions within the environment. We creatively posit the perfect circle, we gradually grasp the universal pattern 'horse', by repeated observation of aspects of the pattern.

Great to listen to you as always Bishop Barron speaking from your male point of view coming from a long line of male intellectuals ,philisophers, theologians, scientists etc and with all that left half the human race out in the cold for so long and denied them the right to participate in this world ...which now thankfully has been corrected, but what a waste - I'd like you to think about that and comment at some stage.

Having spent a career in science, I never saw the conflict. If there is a perceived conflict, it likely comes from tribal disinformation. Religion can be tested with the scientific method, not as an observer, but as a participant. You can seek God and see what happens. Do your questions get answered? etc. Now the science I was in was very "do what works", as we had to solve problems under extreme time pressure (30s to minutes), and often, at least 1x / week and up to 3x / day. So you gravitate toward what works in that situation and faith works. I think the answer to "evangelization" is not better explanation, but theological. The theology is in the Book of Jonathon. Jonathon and his armor bearer intervened to save Israel without help, according to God's guidance. Then all Israel rallied behind Jonathon. So if the Church wants to fill the pews, be Jonathon. How to do that was mapped out at Fatima by intervening on behalf of a sinful world through specific prayers requested by Holy Mary (Rosary, 1st Sat. Devotion etc.) as a means to prevent future world wars. Thus, a better path than trying to follow the example of the secular world with another boycott, is to follow the instruction given at Fatima and be Jonathon. Try to save the world & the world may just rally by filling the pews.

Your earlier comments about calling science teachers and religion teachers to "talk to each other" echoes a call made by C.P. Snow in an essay entitled The Two Cultures, that criticized the separation of literature and science, claiming that both schools, and society as a whole, have suffered because of the division.

I’m working through this thought. Please help. Before Jesus, humanity was intelligent. Individuals could perceive the intelligibility around and within themselves. The recognition of this intelligibility sparked a curiosity about its source. A variety of religions explored this reasonable perception. Because we are primates, the source of our intelligibility resembles our concept of a parent..It created us. As this curiosity grows some begin to suspect that our “creator” designed us to be aware of his existence. Does this mean our Creator desires a relationship? Another reasonable question. Other individuals intuit that our creator will show himself to us. I suspect many individuals of all religions had these reasonable intuitions in one form or another. The incarnation of Jesus Christ and the credibility of his identity based on centuries of scripture and tradition, fulfilled these intuitions for many. So once a Jew, Buddhist, Muslim or Pagan recognized Jesus as the source of their design they could transition away from their preJesus belief system that was based on their initial curiosity around the intelligibility they recognize and move in the direction of the one who created it, Christ. It was the word made flesh that ultimately satisfies the universal intelligibility “curiosity” humanity shares. Like Bishop Barron said, the mind does not rest once it recognizes something like intelligibility. It will only rest when it finds the source.

My curiosity around this comes from those accusing Catholics of forcing individuals to convert. Forcing them to reject their current belief system whether it be Earth based or other religions. I recognize this did happen in some cases, but this can’t explain the incredible explosion of the Christian faith. What could explain the rapid spread of Christianity is an already existing curiosity held by humanity in general. What and where is the source of the intelligibility I sense all around and within me? Jesus Christ answers these fundamental questions. The individual’s mind can rest. This is why they accept Jesus. He satisfies their reasonable curiosity.

Amazing work. Feedback, the 3rd point falls a part a bit with a hang up on a unnecessary claim on "being" defintions. I know you have a certain revelation that excites you in this area Bishop, just maybe qualify as non essential...especially to the total topic of metaphysics. Competition is not necessary in the context setup, and the analogy seems to head toward monism. Participation in the divine nature as a separate free will being seems to be Love's motive and basic structure.

God is Truth; he is the Logic that maintains the consistency of all facts in the universe. He is the fundamental axiom from which everything else is derived. There is no proving that God exists because there is no proving the axioms of any system; you have to accept them on faith and derive consequences from there. And this axiom of consistency is the same premise on which science is built. For science proceeds from the premise that the same laws of cause and effect will continue to be valid everywhere at all times. Science presumes that there is an abstract principle of logic that maintains consistency between all facts everywhere at all time and controls all event. But this is just another description of God.
